[Bug 562061] [NEW] screensaver activates inactive display

2010-04-13 Thread Antti Kaijanmäki
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I have my laptop attached to a KVM switch and I use the VGA output as my
primary desktop on external display. The laptop is below my table with
lid closed. I have deactivated the laptops LCD panel from gnome-display-
properties.

After I upgraded to lucid I noticed that I sometimes lost the upper and
lower gnome panels. They just disappeared and I could not get them back
without restarting my machine. Then I realized that the panels
disappeared after gnome-screensaver had locked the screen for a while. I
then had an idea to check the display properties and I noticed that my
inactive LCD panel had been activated and thus my "primary" desktop had
been moved to the LCD panel of the laptop (lid closed under my desk) and
the panels were there.

Now, the easy work-around is to hit alt+F2 after the screensaver has
been unlocked, type "gnome-display-properties" and deactivate the LCD
panel.

Fair enough, though I hope you're not suggesting direct modification of
the /etc/pam.d/common-* files as a practical way of doing site
customization. (That'll work fine until the next time someone wants to
run pam-auth-update...)

[Bug 562068] [NEW] Activating compiz messes up display

2010-04-13 Thread viktor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: compiz

After yesterday's updates to Lucid beta2 (64bit): kernel 2.6.32-20.29
i.e. before the actual upgrade to 2.6.32-20.30

So as to properly test Docky, I tried to launch compiz via
System>Preferences>Display>Desktop Effects: Normal
it searched for 'Available drivers' for quite a few seconds then prompted to
choose for Previous settings/Keep new.

Below, the "Desktop Effects" tab showed both "No Effects" and "Normal" selected.
On reopening this tab via the System menu it appears that compiz was not
activated.

On reboot the display was messed up:
 * over the desktop, the cursor would be an X instead of the regular arrow
 * no titlebars, no window borders so it became really annoying to manage
windows (esp. Firefox)
 * no window background/foreground priority: latest window would just stay
front > extremely annoying

After today's updates and reboot into 2.6.32-20.30 I was able to reproduce this
on first try. Going back to "Desktop Effects" fixed the issue, then again
messed up.
Currently I'm only able to reproduce it while trying to set effects to Normal:
the display is only messed up as described above for a while.

For the time being I don't know if this is related to my Nvidia
(current) driver, Xserver or remaing Docky packages.

[Bug 562071] [NEW] Printer does not work

2010-04-13 Thread Rothfarb
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: yelp

I use Ubuntu 9.10
Packages: HPLIP 3.9.8-1ubuntu2, CUPS 3.9.8-1ubuntu2

I bought an HP_Laserjet_P1005 usb printer.
I installed it as was explained in some site.
I expected the printer to print.
What happened was that at first it did print but then it changed behavior to
the following:
When I boot the machine it comes with the following error: HPLIP Device Status
HP_Laserjet_P1005 Printer (BC1PRWZ) Device communication error (5012) and the
device is stopped in HP Device manager (see attached pic
rothfarb.2010Apr13.8-41.1.png)
When I tried to enter CUPS from HP Device manager i got an error: Unable to
open device hp:/usb/HP_Laserjet_P1005?serial=BCPRWZ (see attached pic
rothfarb.2010Apr13.8-43.2.png).
The print queue is left with one old print jobs in status processing and the
others in status pending.
I tried to reactivate the printer but it came with the same error.
I tried to stop/start the printer and disconnect/connect the usb plug. It did
not change.

Thank you
Joshua Rothfarb

Re: [Bug 445852] Re: devkit-disks-probe-ata-smart causes HSM Violations on SSD, and potential hardware death

ubuntu-crypto [2010-04-12 21:52 -]:

> SDDs correct?

The SMART probing is not inherently tied to SSDs. It just seems that
many of today's SSDs use a kind of controller which acts up when its
asked for SMART status.

So, nobody can guarantee that this problem does not affect normal HDDs
as well, but it seems we haven't heard about those yet.

If you re-enable the SMART probing and it works for you (easy to
notice if your startup speed suddenly increases by 30 seconds or so),
then it's safe, yes.

[Bug 559997] Re: Mountall needs to generate pot file on build

2010-04-13 Thread David Planella
Traditionally the POT templates in the sources are manually updated
shortly before a release and then given to translators. Or in projects
hosted Launchpad, if automatic translation updates are used, simply
manually updating the POT file and committing it updates it in
Launchpad.

But anyway, this bug is not about the sources, but rather about the .deb
package needing to create a POT template during the build, which it
currently doesn't.

In order to allow using the Ubuntu translation infrastructure, all
Ubuntu packages include a rule of some sort in debian/rules to create a
POT template on build.

Different packages handle this differently: for example all GNOME CDBS-
based packages include the langpack.mk rule, which takes care of that,
whereas others simply add something along the lines of 'cd po; intltool-
update -p'. There is more info on the links Gabor was pointing out in
the original post.

*
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/Internationalisation/Packaging#Translation%20templates
*
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/Internationalisation/RecipeVerifyingTranslationUploads
* https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/TranslationLifecycle

What happened with mountall was that on uploading the package Launchpad
picked up the outdated template included in the sources, which has only
17 strings instead of the current 50+ ones. Modifying the debian/rules
file to create an updated POT file will sort this out.

In the meantime, what I've done is to manually upload an up-to-date
mountall.pot template into Launchpad, which will at least give the
opportunity to translators to translate the messages before the
deadline. However, the package will still need to be modified, otherwise
the next package upload with an outdated template will overwrite the one
I've manually uploaded.

[Bug 484476] Re: local screen unlocked by remote connection via VNC

2010-04-13 Thread Vish
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut
should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that
affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be
addressed as part of this project.

- Though this is a security flaw , we do not expect an average user to use VNC
and remote connection. Not a papercut
For further information about papercuts criteria, please read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as "Invalid" only in the
papercuts project.

[Bug 409795] Re: evolution mail aliases regression

2010-04-13 Thread Guillaume Lecanu
@Sebastien Bacher:
Of course, I have tested all sensible things after upgrading the first computer
(kernel, drivers, printer, scanners, fax, voip, etc). But I haven't tested all
options of all applications, because, since Warty, I never see any regression
bug in applications of Ubuntu.

I know you do your best, and I know it's not a simple task, we sincerely
appreciate all your works, I don't blam you at all.

I have only suggested an appreciate feature to prevent theses kind of
problem.

This bug was reported in August 2009, before the final release of Karmic Koala
(November 2009).
May be it's possible while the dist-upgrading, to look in launchpad if there is
regression bugs reported, and in this case to show the subject / links and to
ask if we want to upgrade the package.

When I was on debian (before that Ubuntu exists), I remember the apt
dist-upgrade command do this automatically for all critical bugs. This
wasn't directly integrated in "apt" command, this was a plugin or
another package added, but I don't remember the name. May be it's
possible to do something similar, at least for the regression bugs and
critical bugs ?

[Bug 532633] Re: [Master] Window Control buttons: position/order/alignment

2010-04-13 Thread Martin Wildam
Well, if the community is so blindly ignored, then I should maybe switch
distribution...

I have been a convinced Ubuntu-User but if things develop that way...

I think the community is bringing the most new users. It is not the
Windows users that find Ubuntu and then really use it. Everywhere I
look, there are only a very few leader types that find things themselves
- most use what others already successfully use. And Linux is a lot
spread by word of mouth. New users want other users near to them who
they can ask for help if needed. The buttons-to-the-left-change is
definitely making the transition for a Windows user more difficult.

I will not go to teach new users about gconf - they should be able to
focus on their work. I myself used that the last time about 5 years ago.
I remember it so annoying on Windows that after a fresh installation
quite every default setting in the Explorer need to be changed to make
it useful. Do we want Ubuntu get the same annoyance-factor?

If you include new themes with the distribution that have the buttons on
the left - well do it. But don't set such a theme as default.

@Mark: I didn't notice at any place so far a real reason for the buttons
on the left. "Encouraging innovation" is good, but there should be
reason. For such experimental major changes the very best would be to
first have just an optional additional theme that makes use of this. And
there are really more important changes in UI design needed, just one
that comes to my mind immediately: A confirmation dialog when the user
presses the delete key in Nautilus. I am not sure myself sometimes, if I
accidently hit delete when scrolling to the end and then have to examine
recycle bin if I have deleted something accidently or not. (I know this
is off-topic here, but just one of plenty other examples being more
important for a good user experience than moving buttons to the left
without any reason). And keep in mind that productivity, reliability and
functionality is more important than design. For most computer users the
computer is not their main focus - they use it but want to focus on
their main business or hobby. "New innovative ideas" from my
understanding are only such if they solve a problem or bring new
possibilities. Can't see that for this button-issue - the opposite is
more true.

@Bernhard: Thanks for filing this - I think it is the best solution only
having a new optional theme using this style.

[Bug 551470] Re: Simple scan needs to generate a POT template on build

2010-04-13 Thread David Planella
> Thanks David, will fix for Lucid+1

Robert, just a quick note: would it be possible to fix it for Lucid by
simply adding a 'cd po; intltool-update -p' statement to debian/rules or
something along these lines? This could then perhaps be refined for
Maverick if necessary.

The reason I'm mentioning this is because although we're fine for now
with the manual upload, any subsequent package uploads with an outdated
template will overwrite whatever is in Launchpad with this outdated
template. Actually, if you don't want to touch the debian/rules file,
you could perhaps add a patch to include an updated POT file in the
package as an alternative.

I'm not sure if it's too late now, but I felt I should mention it.
Thanks!

Does it help for you? It would be great if you guys could test udev
151-5 on lucid. You can get the old .deb from here:

Hi Jason. I am sorry to hear that Ubuntu One is not working for you. As this
report is in related to older packages, please file a new bug report.
This can be done by running "ubuntu-bug ubuntuone-client" (without the quotes)
from a terminal window or by right-clicking the ubuntuone applet & selecting
"Report a problem".
Thanks in advance!

[Bug 479597] Re: HP Mini 311 - Does not always boot

2010-04-13 Thread steubens
yea, its an option; haven't used it enough to see if it also causes
problems with _something_; but i'd much rather help to improve b43,
there's some stuff about probing and early boot in the driver that
probably needs more attention than it got with some of the kernel
changes since .23 (or .24, don't remember which got b43 merged)

[Bug 364156] Re: powernow-k8: BIOS does not provide ACPI -PSS objects in a way that Linux understands

2010-04-13 Thread David Gaarenstroom
@Tom Pringle: even though you get the same kernel warning (symptom), for
you this is a different situation, because you are using completely
different hardware (cause). That is also why I think similar bug reports
for different hardware should not be merged.

AFAIK, there can be three main causes for this warning:
1) Your BIOS is not configured to support C 'n' Q
2) Your BIOS is incomplete
3) You are using a different (newer) CPU than the ones your motherboard supports

For Lenovo I know they offers _incomplete_ ACPI information, you will
have to override your ACPI data by using a custom DSDT. You should be
able to find some howto's on the Internet, I don't have the full
details...

But either way, these bug reports do not apply to any software in
Ubuntu, except that you cannot use a customized powernow-k8 driver
because this module is built into the kernel image...

[Bug 562083] [NEW] tar: Record size = 8 blocks

Public bug reported:

When creating a tar archive with git-archive. I get a good tar archive, which
