In response to Stephane T, when you run "killall soffice.bin", that knocks out the quickstarter. This could be tied up to the system shutdown button with something like "killall soffice.bin && shutdown -P", but it's an openoffice specific hack, and, from what I've read, the user cannot, in any case, access the command invoked by the shutdown button, which is hardcoded in gnome somewhere! -- [ooo-build] OOo QuickStarter: unable to shutdown / reboot / logout when quickstarter is active https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/562027 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 574706] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 Installer crashes with Raid0
I have experienced this problem also when installing Kubuntu 10.04 on a partition of my NVidia raid0 shared with Windows XP. There was no problem installing Kubuntu 9.10 from CD. The installer created '/dev/mapper/nvidia_fdabdcca5' as / and '/dev/mapper/nvidia_fdabdcca6' for swap, and correctly identified '/dev/mapper/nvidia_fdabdcca1' as ntfs. When it came to installing Kubuntu 10.04, at the 'Prepare partitions' window, I selected '/dev/mapper/nvidia_fdabdcca5' as / to wipe the 9.10 installation. At the 'Ready to install' window I clicked on 'Advanced'. 'Install boot loader' was left ticked but I changed default '/dev/sda' to '/dev/mapper/nvidia_fdabdcca'. The installation failed at 'Running grub-install /dev/sda' with the error message "Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda failed. This is a fatal error." Why did the grub-installer try /dev/sda??? I ran the installer again double checking the settings in 'Advanced', but it failed once more. I installed Kubuntu 9.10 again as detailed in paragraph 2. This time I looked at the selections in 'Advanced'. 'Install boot loader' was ticked and '/dev/mapper/nvidia_fdabdcca' was the default setting, there was no /dev/sda setting available. It would appear the grub-installation routine does not correctly identify the setting selected in the 'Advanced' tab when installing Kubuntu 10.04. As a work-around, install Kubuntu 9.10 then upgrade to 10.04, but this is not satisfactory if you have already downloaded the 10.04 iso image and want a clean installation. -- Ubuntu 10.04 Installer crashes with Raid0 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/574706 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 605773] [NEW] Wrong kernel setting zone_reclaim_mode leads to performance problems
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: linux-image-server -- Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Release:10.04 -- linux-image-server version: Installed: 2.6.32.22.23 -- The background of this problem is - or how I discovered it - a migration of PostgreSQL database server from old hardware+old OS to a new hardware+new OS. Transition was no problem, but after we started using the server in production, we discovered a strange problem during nightly backups. The runtime of the backups went up from 2 1/2 hours to 6 1/2 hours (despite the fact, that the new hardware was designed to have much more power ... which positively showed up in most other tasks!). A longer research of the issue using the knowledge of many helpful guys on the PostgreSQL mailing list finally helped to find the reason for this slow down. It turned out to be a problem around the VM part of the kernel! Under some situations, where a lot of memory - for caching purposes - was consumed (which easily happens while backing up 100 GByte DBs), a congestion happened in the VM which slowed down the process dramatically. In depth analysis of many parts (vie /proc file system, ps, strace etc.) and comparing with settings on the old machines, I finally found an essential kernel setting, vm.zone_reclaim_mode, that was solely responsible for the issue. Luckily I could construct a simple test scenario (COPY-to-STDOU - exporting the data from a database table via stdout ... and writing this via pipe to the file system) where I could reproduce the issue. Our server had the value zone_reclaim_mode = 1 set, whereas our old servers used zone_reclaim_mode = 0. By switching (via sysctl) this values back and forth, I could easily bring down the experimental export process to crouching speed, or let it run again. The complete path of the analysis can be viewed at the PostgreSQL mailing list here: (there ia also a description, how the problem can be reproduced, and what the many symptoms are) http://archives.postgresql.org/pgsql-general/2010-07/msg00267.php Now, the conclusion to use "zone_reclaim_mode = 0" on our type of hardware was further strengthened by a very interesting thread at LKML, where the kernel developer discussed potential issues with this setting. You can read it here: http://lkml.org/lkml/2009/5/12/586 That discussion boils down to the fact, that for some reasons (described there in detail), the Linux kernel thinks on modern CPU architectures (out new Servers use Core i7 generation CPUs which are explicitly mentioned!) that it has a NUMA architecture. And for NUMA architectures it automatically enables "zone_reclaim_mode = 1" ... even though it is wrong, and not even recommended under many circumstances. Interestingly, even most posters at the LKML thread think, that it would be better to always(!) default this value to "zone_reclaim_mode = 0" instead of some automatic decision. Some more detail on what zone_reclaim_mode does can also be found here: http://www.linuxinsight.com/proc_sys_vm_zone_reclaim_mode.html Now, I don't know why this "defaulting to 0" is still not in the mainline kernels. That discussion from May 2009 at LKML died down, and obviously no one feeled responsible to commit the patches (even though, obvioulsy one of the guys had already prepared some!). BUT, I would ask the Ubuntu team, to maybe act on their own and provide a way in the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS to fix this issue (because, some reports on the net suggest, that "zone_reclaim_mode = 1" can do harm to performance in many ways)! And I believe, that I will not be the only PostgreSQL admin being affected by this issue! ** Affects: linux-meta (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Wrong kernel setting zone_reclaim_mode leads to performance problems https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/605773 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 102947] Re: ERR: authdaemon: s_connect() failed: No such file or directory
Yes. The message goes to stderr and maildrop tries to continue. In case authdaemon is not essential to message delivery, the message is harmless and maildrop succeeds. That is why its exit code indicates (definitively) that there was a failure. However, in cases where authdaemon *is* essential to message delivery, the message is a debugging aid that complements the exit code that indicates that there *was* a failure. Admittedly, it might be nice if the stderr from the connect attempt could be buffered and printed out only upon an error exit. But the lack of this may be due to some technical constraint such as the library printing it rather than maildrop itself (haven't checked this time). -- ERR: authdaemon: s_connect() failed: No such file or directory https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/102947 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Uncommit is pretty dangerous on a trunk that people integrate around, since suddenly a revision in the history disappears, and everyone has to figure out how to resync. Given the nature of it, is there a problem making it 2-phase? 1) Unset the append_revisions_only flag, indicating that for the next bit it is okay to mutate history a bit. 2) Uncommit 3) set append_revisions_only back to True. Re: [Bug 573469] Re: gwibber does not show anything...nothing at all
Hi Omer, Reinstalled gwiber again after a very long time. Had uninstalled it after opening this thread . It works fine for me as of now but I have noticed that after installing it by CPU usage becomes high touching 20-25% whereas in normal conditions it never crosses 14-15% the average being 3-5%. The RAM usage goes up by a 100 MB too almost. Otherwise it is definitely the best among all the other apps I have been using.Request you to kindly have a look at that part too! [Bug 554172] Re: CUPS and other system services not starting at boot
Don Myers, enter each of the shown lines completely, one after the other, into a terminal window and press Enter after each line. First enter: sudo su - You will get asked for your password, after entering it correctly you will get a root prompt, which means that all subsequent commands in this terminal will get executed as root. Then enter the next line completely (copy and paste it into the terminal): for file in /etc/init/*.conf; do sed -i 's/^console output/\#console output/' $file; done This line executes the sed command in a loop, applying it to each .conf file in the /etc/init/ directory. If you propose that whenever I mean to "bzr uncommit" I have to "bzr disable-append-revision-only", "bzr uncommit", and "bzr reenable-append- revision-only", then I'm going to as for a "bzr really-uncommit" instead! :-) -- want option to allow uncommit but disallow changing mainline https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/605067 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 603816] Re: pidgin crashed with SIGSEGV
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Maverick Meerkat. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/. [Bug 602995] Re: Poor battery life on UL30VT due to NVidia graphics active
Identical behavior using Linux oops 2.6.35-020635rc1-generic #020635rc1 SMP Tue Jun 1 17:27:30 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: The ASUS UL30VT has two graphics cards like many modern laptops. Unfortunately, the higher powered NVidia g210m is active by default, chewing through an additional 4 watts of power and reducing battery life by a few hours. This will be a non-issue when Bug #312756 is fixed (graphics card hot switch). In the interim, laptop users need some way of disabling high powered graphics cards to conserve power. This is not possible in the ASUS UL30VT. A partial solution is available at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1366605 which provides a package that disables the NVidia card. [Bug 556372] Re: Please remove the plymouth dependency from mountall / cryptsetup
Come on Canonical, what's with all the "user's want this and user's want that"? _I_ am a user, as are others here, and this hard depends on plymouth is causing me problems right now. If it's not required (and it's not) then it's not a Depends. This is a bug, plain and simple. Nobody has given any real reason why it shouldn't be fixed - and it's such a painless, simple fix - so it amounts to sticking two fingers up at anybody who cares about this. You know, I'm always defending Ubuntu and Canonical, but this sort of thing really smacks of Microsoft and I'm wondering - not for the first time lately - if I'm actually in the right camp here. Is the "server edition" just meaningless marketing drivel? There's a great many people running headless servers who just don't want to have to deal with plymouth _right now_ and you're forcing us to...why? Because "it's no harm for that to enter the standard set now"? There _is_ a harm _for me_ because it breaks my setup and I have other things to be doing. Please have more consideration for busy admins who made a choice, in good faith, to work with Ubuntu. -- Please remove the plymouth dependency from mountall / cryptsetup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/556372 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Looking at the Lucid linux-image-xxx-virtual package it does indeed contain the generic-pae binaries: $ dpkg -x linux-image-2.6.32-23-virtual_2.6.32-23.37_i386.deb LL $ ls LL/boot config-2.6.32-23-generic-pae vmlinuz-2.6.32-23-generic-pae System.map-2.6.32-23-generic-pae This is also true in Karmic $ dpkg -x linux-image-2.6.31-22-virtual_2.6.31-22.60_i386.deb KK $ ls KK/boot config-2.6.31-22-generic-pae vmlinuz-2.6.31-22-generic-pae System.map-2.6.31-22-generic-pae Back in Hardy we did include -virtual: $ dpkg -x linux-image-2.6.24-28-virtual_2.6.24-28.71_i386.deb HH $ ls HH/boot abi-2.6.24-28-virtual System.map-2.6.24-28-virtual config-2.6.24-28-virtual vmlinuz-2.6.24-28-virtual This is intential and due to the way in which the virtual packages are generated. In Hardy they were a complete separate flavour with their own configuration. For release Intrepid thorugh Lucid the virtual flavour was generated from the server flavour (generic-pae for i386 in Karmic and later). For Maverick and later we are returning to generating these as their own flavour. -- linux-image-virtual installs PAE kernel instead https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/601192 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 558459] Re: Nautilus keeps saying a program opened with wine is not marked as executable even after having marked it
I think that those two points should already be explained in the bug's text (yes, it is reproducible and with the steps explained there)... is there anything else that I should specifically add? ** Changed in: nautilus (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- Nautilus keeps saying a program opened with wine is not marked as executable even after having marked it https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/558459 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
