[Bug 614008] Re: lshw causes laptop to freeze up

2010-09-10 Thread Matt Daubney
This seems to occur for me at the point where lshw is looking at
framebuffer devices. No idea if that helps people debugging things.

[Bug 631795] Re: [MAVERICK] fails to boot after install on dmraid set

2010-09-10 Thread Tom Louwrier
hi Jeremy,

Got the latest mainline kernels and tried installing them. Unfortunately I
running into a bug with Grub that prevents me to update it.
See LP 634840.
So I cannot test new kernels until I get Grub to boot off them. Sorry.

cheers
Tom

[Bug 236105] Re: Missing socket for FastCGI in Lighttpd

2010-09-10 Thread Stefan Bühler
I seriously doubt this.

lighty first creates the socket, then tries to spawn the backend, so if
the socket creation/bind would fail, it wouldn't event fork.

And i can't imagine that your sudo commands fix anything (even if your
/tmp permissions would be broken and not allow lighty to create a socket
in it).

Use strace on lighty (strace -ff lighttpd -D -f
/etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf) to see what happens.

otoh, i guess this is way too old to find out what really happened.

[Bug 632708] Re: [Maverick]Impossible to authenticate to Ubuntu One.

2010-09-10 Thread duanedesign
After doing the update you will need to restart all the Ubuntu One
Services. You can kill the processes with the following:

killall ubuntu-sso-login; killall ubuntuone-syncdaemon

Then start Ubuntu One by typing in the terminal:

ubuntuone-preferences

This way we might get something printed to the Terminal, if it does not
work, that will help us understand what is going on.

thank you,

+ Ubuntu Maverick daily 20100910

After installing Maverick and running it for the first time, a
notification bubble appears saying that you can install extra hardware
drivers. Unhelpfully, it gives no hint of how to do this.

If you're lucky, you may notice a menu appearing in the panel,
containing a single item: Install Drivers. But if you're not an Ubuntu
expert, and weren't looking at the screen for the ten seconds that the
notification bubble was visible, this menu isn't understandable.

This is an inappropriate use of notification bubbles and status menus.
This situation is non-urgent but requires input response, so the
appropriate presentation is a normal window or alert box.
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NotificationDesignGuidelines

I can think of three ways this bug could be fixed (maybe there are more):
  * Use an alert box instead, with Cancel and Install… buttons.
  * Open the Hardware Drivers window directly, improving the intro text to
explain why it is open.
  * Offer the hardware drivers, off by default, in their own section in Update
Manager.

Fixing this bug would invalidate bug 542556.

[Bug 434799] Re: X11 forwarding via SSH does not work after upgrade to karmic

2010-09-10 Thread Vince McIntyre
This bug affected me on Lucid as well.

$ apt-show-versions |grep ssh
openssh-client/lucid-updates uptodate 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu4
openssh-server/lucid-updates uptodate 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu4
ssh-askpass-gnome/lucid-updates uptodate 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu4

$ grep X11 /etc/ssh/sshd_config
X11Forwarding yes
X11DisplayOffset 10

The only setting I needed to change was to set SSH_OPTS=-4 in /etc/defaults/ssh
and /etc/init.d/ssh restart.
Then I logged out and logged in again, and
 echo $DISPLAY
 localhost:10

I was connecting from a Mac running OSX 10.6.4 with the stock apple X11
and xterm.

[Bug 634861] [NEW] USB not working, because usbfs is removed from kernel

2010-09-10 Thread Percy Jahn
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

Actual Maverick Kernel 2.6.35 doesn't include usbfs (since 2.6.32
afaik). Newest KVM (0.13.0rc0) includes support for usb devices via
sysfs. I believe updating should solve this problem.

[Bug 634862] [NEW] kcm_touchpad.so crashes KCMInit on KDE sturtup

2010-09-10 Thread Roman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kcm-touchpad

Release: KUbuntu 10.04

Package version: 0.3.1-0ubuntu3

Expect to happen: KDE4 should always start without a crash

What happens instead:
KDE4 starts normally only after the first login. After doing logout and any
subsequent logins, KDE4 report
a crash in KCMInit due to the touchpad control module (kcm_touchpad.so). In
case of the crash, the touchpad
settings are not get loaded, though it is more important for me that keyboard
settings (like the ones controlling the
language switching) are not loaded as well - maybe KCMInit should load them
after touchpad settings, and does not do
so due to the crash in the touchpad module. The stack backtrace of the crash is
attached.

[Bug 633332] Re: update 10.04 - 10.10 fails on PowerMac G4

2010-09-10 Thread Risczard Groszinski
here is the result:
After replacing my Geforce 4Mx with some ATI Rage 128 Pro graficscard I
installed 10.04 from scratch, added the updates and the smp-kernel. Then I did
update-manager -d to install 10.10 (beta). After reboot, the system comes up
with (almost) no problem. The resolution is inadaequate - seems the ATI-card
isn't used to it's limits or the monitor isn't detected correctly. But the
system as such is up and running. :-)
So it _is_ a problem with Xorg and Geforce MX graficscards.
Since there are a lot of those cards out there, I consider this bug as
important.
Whom may I contact to offer some beta-testing or development-assistance in this
regards?

[Bug 629498] Re: chromium makes itself the default gnome-www-browser without permission

2010-09-10 Thread Paddy Launch
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: chromium-browser

A new install of Chromium /effectively/ makes itself the default browser
  without permission from the user.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Install chromium-browser using e.g. Synaptic Package Manager.
  2. Start chromium, and answer no to the question do you want to make
chromium the default?
- 3. At the command prompt, type:
+ 3. Chromium has now become your default browser for many command line
applications.
+You can prove this by typing the following at the command line:

- $ ls -l /etc/alternatives/*-www-browser
+ $ sudo update-alternatives --config gnome-www-browser

- lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 2010-09-02 16:42 gnome-www-browser -
/usr/bin/chromium-browser
- lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 2010-09-02 16:42 x-www-browser -
/usr/bin/chromium-browser
+ There are 2 choices for the alternative gnome-www-browser (providing
+ /usr/bin/gnome-www-browser).

- The expected behaviour is that the symbolic links above remain pointing
- at your default browser (in my case, firefox). With those symbolic links
- changed, any calls to e.g. urlview from a mail tool such as mutt, will
- open up a chromium browser, when the user expects to see their default
- browser.

+ 1/usr/bin/chromium-browser 40manual mode
+ 2/usr/bin/firefox40manual mode

+ The expected behaviour is that the '*' remains with your previously
+ indicated preferred browser and NOT chromium. Now any calls to e.g.
+ urlview from a mail tool such as mutt, will open up a chromium browser,

I'm guessing that this is a regression caused by the fix to Bug #571103

[Bug 628087] Re: Maverick ubiquity lacks option to change computer name

2010-09-10 Thread Dave Gilbert
Mark,
Thanks for the reply. Some things to consider I think are, having simplified
something what the alternatives are for someone;
in this case if they want to do it they end up having to edit a critical
system config file or two as root.

So yes, it is a very slight simplification of the installer, but for
someone who wants to set the name it's a VAST complication - could you
explain to someone who wasn't that computer literate how to set the
name? How many broken machines do you think we'll get from people
trying but screwing up the edit? How many people are going to think
Ubuntu is really hard to use because something simple requires them to
edit a text file as root?

I suggest this is a thing that normal people would *need* to set in a
reasonable number of cases (just two network PCs in the house wouldn't
be unusual even for a non-geeky setting).

Dave

[Bug 633987] Re: foomatic-db-compressed-ppds holds back ubuntu-desktop

2010-09-10 Thread Michael Vogt
Apt considers the two identical when looking at the dependencies. In
such cases it prefers the installed package over a new package. The
easiest fix is to make foomatic-db priority: extra (lower than
foomatic-db-compressed).

[Bug 633794] Re: update-apt-xapian-index: dies with an unknown opcode

2010-09-10 Thread Richard Boulton
Is it possible to reassign bugs to another package? I think this bug
should be assigned to apt-xapian-index (since the bug is occurring when
running a program from that package), or possibly python-apt (since it
looks like a problem with a python file from python-apt). It might have
a chance of being fixed there, since the backtrace looks to me like an
invalid .pyc file for has been generated (no idea how) for
/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/apt/package.py, which I think is part
of python-apt. The Xapian developers don't have particular expertise in
broken .pyc files.

As Olly says, xapian-bindings doesn't feature in the backtrace at all,
and I can't see how it could be related to this bug. Therefore, as far
as xapian-bindings is concerned, the bug is invalid. I would try
reassigning to python-apt or apt-xapian-index, but I can't see any
option for doing that in the UI here.

[Bug 292377] Re: Calibration support for Xenarc 700TSV

2010-09-10 Thread Daniel Petty
I again tried to configure this screen in 10.04.1 and still had the same
problems. I resolved it by adding the following lines to
/usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/05-evdev.conf

Section InputClass
   Identifier eGalax
   MatchProduct eGalax
   MatchDevicePath /dev/input/event*
   Driver evdev
   Option SwapAxes 1
   Option InvertX 1
   Option InvertY 1
   Option Calibration 2 4100 11 4099
EndSection

I then installed and ran xinput_calibrator to get the actual values for the
Calibration option as described here:

[Bug 267330] Re: update-apt-xapian-index crashed with OSError in getmtime()

2010-09-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package apt-xapian-index - 0.39

---
apt-xapian-index (0.39) unstable; urgency=low

  [ Enrico Zini ]
  * Fixed tests on Ubuntu (Thanks Michael Vogt for the patch)
  * Added cataloged-times plugin by Michael Vogt
  * Handle multiple invocations of indexer via dbus
  * Described axi-cache in the package description

  [ Colin Watson ]
  * Fix more crashes when the Dir::Cache::pkgcache file doesn't exist, along
the same lines as Martin Pitt's change in 0.38 (LP: #267330).
  * Use the new MSetItem attribute API, introduced in Xapian 1.0.0, rather
than the sequence API which was removed in 1.1.0 (closes: #595916).
  * Create the XDG cache directory with appropriate permissions if it
doesn't exist.
  * Set better NAME sections in manual pages.

[Bug 634068] Re: External display won't display

2010-09-10 Thread Michael Jonker
I think you are right about it getting confused. I ran gnome-display-
properties and the various settings give varying and incorrect results.
I have attached 4 screenshots to illustrate.

The only correct output I can get is when disabling either one of the
displays. In this case the remaining display is correct.

I will file as a separate bug the issue that gnome-display-properties is
not accessible through the GUI in Unity.

Re: [Bug 633920] Re: Failed to import ai file to Inkscape 0.48 (uniconvertor)

2010-09-10 Thread panix
OK but I'm on Ubuntu and I removed 0.48 back to 0.47 thinking it could
solve the problem.
Before I upgraded to 0.48 importation of my .ai file worked perfectly.

I couldn't open your attached neither, as expected.

Le 10/09/2010 12:45, Alvin Penner a écrit :

on Windows XP, Inkscape 0.48, I have two entries in the File Type box
 when I use File Open.

about 8 items from the top is the type Adobe Illustrator 9.0 and above (.ai)
about 13 items from the top is the type Adobe Illustrator 8.0 and below (.ai)

attached is a sample file that does not open using the 8.0 and below
option, but does open properly using the 9.0 and above

[Bug 628132] Re: brasero crashed with SIGSEGV in dl_iterate_phdr()

2010-09-10 Thread Pedro Villavicencio
Thank you taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.
However, processing the crash report to get detailed information for the
developers failed as the retracer did not generate a useful symbolic stack
trace.
Please try to obtain a backtrace manually following the instructions at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash and upload the backtrace (as an
attachment) to the bug report. This will greatly help us in tracking down your
problem.
