[Bug 882579] Re: Some Commands return: Timed out during operation: cannot acquire state change lock

2011-10-31 Thread nutznboltz
This report (in German)
https://forge.univention.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=23258 suggests
that when the guest VM is reset by a reboot the clock jumps backward in
time.

Two patches were suggested, both being necessary together:

KVM: x86: Fix kvmclock bug
backported to Natty Aug 11, 2011 but not to linux-lts-backport-natty-2.6.38
yet!!!

[Blueprint servercloud-p-move-ec2-mirrors-to-s3] Move EC2 mirrors to S3

2011-10-31 Thread Ben Howard
Blueprint changed by Ben Howard:

Whiteboard changed:
  Rationale:
S3 is a faster, more scalable technology that allows us to reduce costs and
increase availability for EC2 users.

  Assumption:
    * Running on-EC2 mirrors is expensive and presents availability challenges.
    * on-EC2 mirrors have limited bandwidth and thus speeds can be affected by
load
    * S3 has very high availability
    * S3 intra-region bandwidth is free
    * on-EC2 mirrors results in bandwidth charges when users use a mirror
outside the availability zone
    * S3 is extremely fast. Generally speeds to S3 access are near-native
    * Amazon has asked for us to host our mirrors on S3
    * Uploads to S3 are free

A prototyped-S3 mirror will be shown at UDS.
-
- ---
-
- Hurdles:
- https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/apt/+bug/882832 - S3 does not
accept +'s when fetching files.
-   * May need to change APT meta-data to remove +'s and replace with %2B
-   * May need to maintain a separate meta-data for S3 buckets and re-sign

  Q. 'LAN' bandwidth access to the region mirrors is currently free already,
no? -- Daviey
  A. All upload and intra-zone transit is free.

  Q. How do you keep people out of EC2 from access?
  A. Bucket policies enable restricting access to the Amazon CIDR address.

  Comments:
  - Can this whiteboard be pre-filed with some examples of how others have
implemented this?
     * AFAIK, there is only one implementation of S3 buckets. Most examples
that I know of us S3 as a storage backend, while having an EC2 instance front
the S3 storage. Amazon Linux AMI is the only pure S3 backend/frontend solution.

  - How would this work?
    * There are a number of ways to push out a repository using existing tools.
s3fuse (albeit rather buggy) allows you to mount a s3 bucket as file system.
s3cmd allows for local to remote synchronization. However, in order to build
something that scales well, you need something that uses multiple connections
and pushes multiple files at once (i.e. threading and boto python library)
     * Example syncronization code can be found at
lp:~utlemming/+junk/s3repo_tool (this code will be used to populate the
prototyped-S3 mirror for UDS.

  --

  Examples:
Amazon Linux AMI currently uses S3 for backing the mirrors. The design is
more or less:
  - One bucket per region.
  - Buckets are named off of the DNS CNAME, i.e.
us-east-1.ec2.archive.ubuntu.com
  - a method of pushing pristine repositories up

[Bug 884240] Re: I'm having the same issue.

2011-10-31 Thread Imre Gergely
I guess you could just remove those two files, or simply clear the
Firefox browser cache. Probably they are some javascripts with
suspicious content.

I don't think this qualifies as a bug though ;) Please let us know if
the warnings go away after clearing the cache.

You could also take a look in those files with some plain text editor
(like vi), maybe you can figure out what site did they came from and
avoid visiting that site in the future.

[Bug 839390] Re: Apache+Kerberos not working anymore since update today

2011-10-31 Thread Michael Heldebrant
I'm also seeing intermittent LDAP failures to bind for users with this
version of the apache2 package. I think a regression in ssl support for
ldap has occured with this version of apache2. I've put one of my two
misbehaving servers back to 2.2.14-5ubuntu8.4 to see if the problems go
away. A server that has not upgraded from 2.2.14-5ubuntu8.4 has been
fine during the periods the 2.2.14-5ubuntu8.6 servers show problems.

Any update, or any other information needed to resolve this that I can
provide?

If you loock at comment #32 and comment #27, the patch got reverted in
natty because there was no one verifying the change. It also gives a
link that should tell how to get it reconsidered to go into natty. If
that is done, it will be in the lts backport automatically.

[Bug 582376] Re: Samba (nmbd) fails to start at boot

Hi,

I have static IP address set and my nmbd doesn't start automatically.
sudo service nmbd start is working OK and nmbd starts, but nmbd
doesn't start after boot.

I tried with suggested changing /etc/init/nmbd.conf, but nmbd doesn't
start and I found this in dmesg:

[Bug 795717] Re: 32bit rhel and centos 5.(5|6) hangs on boot on natty

I build a 32-bit RHEL 5 compatible Qemu/KVM guest, really Scientific
Linux 5.7. The guest was built from SL.57.090911.DVD.i386.disc1.iso
plus today's updates.

The guest runs fine with 1 CPU defined and hangs trying to boot with 2
CPUs defined so I can reproduce this 100% with the following VM host:

When the 2.6.38-12 backport kernel plus the kvm clock patch finishes
compiling I will install it and test to see if the 32-bit RHELish guest
still hangs or not.

I will also test on regular x86_64 Natty soon.

[Bug 854457] Re: Panic or segfault in Samba every 30 mins

2011-10-31 Thread Myhnet
i also get this alerts every 2 or 3 days even i restart winbindd every
night.

The Samba 'panic action' script, /usr/share/samba/panic-action,
was called for PID 2081 (/usr/sbin/winbindd).

This means there was a problem with the program, such as a segfault.
Below is a backtrace for this process generated with gdb, which shows
the state of the program at the time the error occurred. The Samba log
files may contain additional information about the problem.

If the problem persists, you are encouraged to first install the
samba-dbg package, which contains the debugging symbols for the Samba
binaries. Then submit the provided information as a bug report to
Ubuntu by visiting this link:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/samba/+filebug

[Bug 750371] Re: squid causing /var to stay busy during shutdown

2011-10-31 Thread Steve Beattie
I was able to reproduce this issue with squid 2.7.STABLE9-2ubuntu5.1,
and have verified that the version in maverick-proposed,
2.7.STABLE9-2ubuntu5.2 appears to fix the issue. After upgrading, squid
continued to function as expected. Marking verification-done.

[Bug 861061] Re: compiz 3d performance regression

2011-10-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Rocko, that unsightly tearing is bug 880707.

As for your ongoing framerate problems, I suspect a major factor is compiz
starting to draw each frame at an inappropriate time, like very close to the
start of the monitor's vertical refresh. I think the fix for that in future
will be to enhance compiz to use GLX_INTEL_swap_event. In the mean time, you
might be able to work around that issue by setting:
  Detect Refresh Rate = OFF
Refresh Rate = Double your monitor refresh rate.

Sorry in advance if it doesn't work, but it's worth a try.

[Bug 860427] Re: Oneiric displays 'Laptop battery critically low' message after AC is unplugged when 'charged' shown on battery indicator

2011-10-31 Thread Bishnu Mishra
Hi,

Here is a work around that worked for me.
When the pop up comes do not click on the Cancel or OK button. Just use the
close button on the window title bar (the cross button in red) to close the pop
up. Doing this will not put the laptop in hibernate or suspend mode and you can
continue work.
This worked for me very well. Please give it a try and share your findings,
then we can suggest this as work around, till the issue is fixed permanently.

Thanks
Bishnu

[Bug 884079] [NEW] libreoffice would change numbering when viewing ms-word document

2011-10-31 Thread Yi Xuan Huang
Public bug reported:

Problem description:
When I try to view one document created by ms-word, it seems numbering
bullets for level 2 will be changed. I have used symphony 3.0.0 fp1, it looks
well.

For example:
open one document created by ms-word, it should have numbering, like:
1. xxx
2.
 2.1 xxx
  2.2 xxx
 3. xxx
3.1 xx
 3.2 xxx
When I viewed it in libreoffice, it will automatically modify 2.1 2.2 to 1.1,
1.2, and 3.1 3.2 to 1.3, 1.4.

Expected behavior:
It should be working as ms-word or symphony
Platform (if different from the browser):
ubuntu 11.04, gnome.

[Bug 861061] Re: compiz 3d performance regression

2011-10-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
FYI, on my Sandybridge graphics using Force full screen redraws (buffer
swap) on repaint, I found graphics were most smooth if I also disable
Sync To VBlank. That also disables the fix from my PPA, so you don't
really need the PPA unless you have ATI/AMD graphics.

Also, the Intel graphics are more smooth with TripleBuffer enabled (the
default). Although glxgears reports a higher frame rate with
TripleBuffer disabled, I actually experience a smoother desktop leaving
TripleBuffer enabled.

[Bug 860427] Re: Oneiric displays 'Laptop battery critically low' message after AC is unplugged when 'charged' shown on battery indicator

2011-10-31 Thread Ron Hale-Evans
Bishnu, thanks for the suggestion. Your workaround didn't work for me,
whether my netbook was configured to hibernate or shut down on low
power. (Dell Inspiron 910 / Dell Mini 9.) The system powered down within
30 seconds even when I closed the pop up with the cross button. I'm glad
someone has found a workaround, anyway.

[Bug 884083] [NEW] strange behavoir of menus in lightdm with gksu

2011-10-31 Thread adam jvok
Public bug reported:

Using lightdm on 11.10, I find that either I am confused by the behavior of
gksu and menus or there is a bug somewhere.
Here's an example...

From a terminal,
$ gksu -u someotheruser firefox
Tools/Addons, download and insert 'foxyproxy standard'.
Exit firefox
$ gksu -u someotheruser firefox
The Tools menu now contains sub-menu 'FoxyProxy Standard' as expected.
Leave it running , from another terminal,
$ firefox
Tools menu shows the FoxyProxy submenu, even though it is not installed for
this user.

Exit both firefox apps.

$ firefox
Tools menu nolonger has FoxyProxy (as it should not).
$ gksu -u someotheruser firefox
Tools menu nolonger has FoxyProxy (it should).

This occurs when running lightdm.
Due to a different bug (Bug #866083) I was forced to move back to gdm.
In gdm, this behavoir is not seen and gksu/menus behave as expected.

Looks like a lightdm bug to me.

Isn't there some dbus signal emitted when the users request
logout/shutdown/reboot? In that case, you could probably write some
elisp code that reacts to that signal and terminates the daemon
automatically.

[Bug 201342] Re: Tearing on secondary monitors even when Sync To VBlank is turned on.

2011-10-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Added a workaround in the bug description. I think it's exactly what
Aaron P. of Nvidia was talking about...

WORKAROUND:

Enable Force full screen redraws (buffer swap) on repaint in the
Workarounds section of CCSM. If you don't have ccsm installed, you can
get it by installing package compizconfig-settings-manager.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: compiz

When using 2 separate X screens with Vsync on, Compiz should honor each
screen's refreshrate independently. Instead it pushes a single refresh,
causing tearing on one of the screens when both screens are not in
  perfect sync.

  Ubuntu Hardy
  compiz-core 1:0.7.2-0ubuntu1

  Dell XPS M1330 laptop (Intel Core2Duo T7500, 2GB ram, Nvidia 8400M GS,
internal monitor and external Dell 2405FPW)

- Steps to reproduce:
+ WORKAROUND:
+
+ Enable Force full screen redraws (buffer swap) on repaint in the
+ Workarounds section of CCSM. If you don't have ccsm installed, you can
+ get it by installing package compizconfig-settings-manager.
+
+ TEST CASE:

  1) Use a dual-monitor setup with 2 separate X screens
  2) Start Compiz with Vsync enabled
  3) Move a window around both screens

You will find that screen 0 shows no sign of tearing, screen 1 will show
a single large tearline running down the screen, timed at the clock
  difference between both screens.

A bit more information taken from a post to Nvidia corp.:

  [question]
  i have a twinview setup with 2 lcd's: nvidia-settings says screen 1 has a
59.99hz refreshrate, screen 2 has 59.95hz.

as a result, with vsync on (without is undoable), one of the screens
always has one major tearline running down very slowly. the other one is
smooth. depending on which screen i make primary, the other one starts
  to tear.

so i guess that sort of makes sense, as the screens are slightly out of
sync, but isnt there a way to make both screen vsync correctly? i tried
running 2 separate x screens but that doesnt seem to be the solution
(compiz is still only using 1 global refreshrate).

-
  [answer]
In TwinView, there's only one video memory surface for the screen, so it's
only possible to sync to one or the other. To sync to both at the same time,
you'd need to wait for the refreshes to line up again, which happens every
1/(59.99 Hz - 59.95 Hz) = 25 seconds = unacceptable. One thing you could try is
to use identical mode timings for both screens, if your display devices can
handle it.

With two separate X screens, you can swap each one independently so you
should be able to get tear-free swaps on both screens. If Compiz can't
do it, that sounds like a bug in Compiz.

  -AaronP, Nvidia Corporation.

[Bug 861061] Re: compiz 3d performance regression

2011-10-31 Thread Rocko
I tried turning detect frame rate off and setting the frame rate
manually to 120 (my monitors both report 59.9 or 60 Hz refresh), but it
hasn't helped. Sync to VBlank doesn't help the glxspheres framerate
either. It really is most odd, because up until yesterday it would quite
happily run at 59.x fps, whereas now it struggles to get 29-34 fps. If I
detach the external monitor I can get 40-45fps, but it still isn't
anywhere near 60.

I also run ironhide and if I run glxspheres through the nvidia card back
into compiz running through the intel card, I only get 50-60fps, whereas
before I could get 100-120 fps. And in metacity I can get over 200 fps.

[Bug 825146] Re: [Oneiric] The BFB needs to be restored

2011-10-31 Thread PEIGNOT Kévin
I must admit than after almost two month of use, this new design is an
ergonomic catastrophe. I loose a lot of time two unhide the launcher
every time. And if I reduce the amount of time for the launcher to
appear, it appear too fast when mouse is on the left to, for example,
click the left buttons of a full screen application. Really I think
Unity has been really improved for 11.10, but the change on the BFB is
an enormous regression making using the dash a lot too slow.

[Bug 884087] [NEW] gnome-panel interacts badly when dual-desktop set a virtical overlap.

2011-10-31 Thread davidzhang.amd
Public bug reported:

I have a 2 monitors and create a external desktop environment, and the external
panel stacked vertically above the primary panel. following is some information
about xrandr -q
DFP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DFP2 connected 1920x1200+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 518mm x
324mm
   1920x1200 60.0*+
   1920x1080 60.0
   1600x1200 60.0
DFP5 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DFP6 connected 1920x1200+0+1200 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
582mm x 364mm
   1920x1200 60.0*+
   1920x1080 60.0
   1600x1200 60.0

So the primary panel locate at (0,0) while the external locate at (0,1200),
and the gnome-panel bar locate at the bottom of the primary display.
The I want to set the two panel vertical overlapped a small area( reset the
position of the external display to(0, 1160) ). use the command: xrandr
--output DFP6 --pos 0x1160
The issue observed, gnome-panel don't think the panel-bar on the bottom of the
primary desktop, it reconfigured it a wrong position and a wrong big area. all
the window and icons can't move to this area.
and if we configure this bar to left, right, top, it won't observed this issue.
so the issue only happened when the bar was be set overlapped
May be there some logic mistake in the file ./gnome-panel/panel-mutiscreen.c ,
in the function panel_multiscreen_compress_overlapping_monitors, it thought we
do a full desktop overlap, and subtract a monitor while we just set a part of
overlap.

[Bug 874194] Re: indicator-session shows name as [Invalid UTF-8] for some users

2011-10-31 Thread Kees
I've temporarily fixed it based on Conor Curran's fix, here's what I
did:

1 ) sudo apt-get build-dep indicator-session
2) apt-get source indicator-session
3 ) cd indicator-session-0.3.7
4) # change the following line in ./src/users-service-dbus.h
#define MAXIMUM_USERS   6
to
   #define MAXIMUM_USERS   30
5) dpkg-buildpackage -b -us -uc -rfakeroot
6) sudo dpkg -i ../indicator-session-gtk2_0.3.7-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
indicator-session_0.3.7-0ubuntu1_i386.deb

When you don't want the update manager to propose to update the
indicator-session, edit the ./debian/changelog before making the package
(step 5), e.g.

indicator-session (0.3.7-0ubuntu2) oneiric-proposed; urgency=low

  * Temp fix Invalid UTF-8

 -- Your email your-em...@xxx.com Mon, 31 Oct 2011 07:30:00 +0200

(Note that I've changed 0.3.7-0ubuntu1 to 0.3.7-0ubuntu2)

I've uploaded my i386 versions at:
http://ubuntuone.com/131lB4SoVqqhsaKNznZn6Y and

[Bug 865006] Re: Unity panel transparency color not updating properly Ubuntu 11.10

2011-10-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
When you start the Workspace Switcher (Super+S) the desktop background
is still visible under the panel (but not the launcher). I suspect
that's the same bug as this one.

[Bug 428588] Re: Problems with hpcups driver: Setting duplex too complicated, miscellaneous regressions

2011-10-31 Thread Benjamin Weggenmann
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 487695 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/487695

I cannot enable duplex when printing from within firefox (7.01). The combo-box
in the Page Setup tab of the print dialog simply shows just one option One
Sided. In KDE applications, it correctly shows all three options (one sided,
long edge, short edge) but both firefox and chromium (non-KDE) do not.
Selecting the autoduplex page sizes will not print two sided. With hpijs
driver, it does show the long and short edge options in all tested
applications, BUT it only prints an error message Unable to open the initial
device, quitting.
I did check the duplexer installed option in CUPS administration. I am on
Oneiric Ocelot. I tried hplip 3.11.7 (repositories) and a manually downloaded
3.11.10. hp-check -t says No errors or warnings..
