[Bug 1247388] [NEW] Mouse cursor disapear / mouse stops working, when switching user

2013-11-02 Thread Björn Carlsson
Public bug reported:

I have upgraded to Ubuntu 13.10 Gnome3 amd64, from Ubuntu 13.04 x86 where I
used both Unity, KDE and Gnome, and in the old setup it worked fine.
Now when I select switch user , I come out to the login screen and the mouse
cursor is gone.
Switching back to the first user the mouse is back.
If the second user with no cursor runs:
sudo modprobe -r psmouse
sudo modprobe pmouse
the mouse works again, but then it stops working for the first user.

It could alse be that the cursor is still ther but it doesn't move.

I run a Dell laptop with a Synaptics touchpad.

What can I do to provide more information?

[Bug 1247390] [NEW] Unity 8 indicators mixed with Unity 7

2013-11-02 Thread Guillaume F
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I installed Unity 8 from the Software Center on Ubuntu 13.10, along with
all main apps (web-browser, gallery...) just out of curiosity (I have no
coding abilities whatsoever).

But now, every time I boot my computer, I get two different network
indicators on my Unity 7 panel. The second one has a small lock on it,
and is the Unity 8 indicator. Whenever I run Unity 8 in a terminal and
then close it, the indicator disappears.

On a similar note, the same kind of mix happens when I receive a message
on Empathy. Phone and SMS appear in my messaging menu and the message is
treated as both phone call and SMS. This is more problematic because it
prevents me from opening a conversation in Empathy (even when I go
directly in Empathy, the window won't open).

I guess some parts of Unity 8 load at startup, but I don't which, how or
why...

But after all, it's very nice seeing these hints of future convergence!

[Bug 1247395] [NEW] qemu-launcher runs parameter:-kernel-kqemu. This should be -enable-kvm

2013-11-02 Thread Rolf-deenen
Public bug reported:

When creating and starting a virtual machine through qemu-launcher, it
will run unaccelerated and therefore very slow. In my case this is
because qemu-launcher runs:

 /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -boot c -m 256 -hda 'MyDisk1' -cdrom
'debian-7.2.0-amd64-netinst.iso' -net nic,vlan=0 -net user,vlan=0
-localtime -kernel-kqemu

This should be:

/usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -boot c -m 256 -hda 'MyDisk1' -cdrom
'debian-7.2.0-amd64-netinst.iso' -net nic,vlan=0 -net user,vlan=0
-localtime -enable-kvm (notice the last parameter.)

This can be changed, as I did on my machine on line 1319 of /usr/bin
/qemu-launcher

[Bug 1247371] Re: scanner only works once Canon LIDE 110

2013-11-02 Thread matze
I found a workaround with the following settings in the USB
configuration of the ASUS Z87-K mainboard

legacy USB support: enabled
Intel xHCI Mode: disabled
EHCI Hand-off: disabled

Now the scanner works perfect and I am not aware of negative effects.
Maybe because I don't have any USB3 devices.

[Bug 1246929] Re: alsa bug in KVM virtual machines

2013-11-02 Thread brian mullan
All of this is on a 2nd machine of mine with a fresh Ubuntu 13.10 install on a
new hard disk.
The KVM is the default install.
The KVM VM was created using the default Ubuntu 13.10 Desktop ISO image.

Note that I started with this 2nd machine because my primary Ubuntu
13.10 machine (which was an upgrade from 13.04) was having the same
problems.

[Bug 1247396] [NEW] Laptop built-in keyboard is not working after ubuntu 13.10 upgrade and using kernel 3.11.0-12-generic

2013-11-02 Thread Saiph Kappa
Public bug reported:

I have an LG S1 Express Dual laptop and after upgrading to ubuntu 13.10
my keyboard stopped working when the default kernel is used
(3.11.0-12-generic). Even the ESC key does not work during the boot
phase to see the booting messages. Basically I can't do anything, I get
stuck in the login screen. If I choose the old kernel 3.8.0-31-generic,
it works without any problem.

Re: [Bug 1227687] Re: [MEDION UIM2080] Kernel 3.2.0-53-generic-pae freeze very often after update from 3.2.0-52-generic-pae

2013-11-02 Thread Kaiser Alexander
Hi Christopher M. Penalver,
this Medion laptop is a little bit strange, because the standard MSN is
not given like on my other Medion products on any lable of backside?!
This was very bad for me to, because i would like to make a bios update
in the past, but there was no new firmware on the Medion homepage... and
the laptop was not possible to find on the Medion Homepage...

The only info on the backside of the laptop is:
Model No.: UIM2080 Notebook PC
Input: 19V= 3.42A(max)
For use with AC adapter FSP065-AAC only
S/N: SZSL52II573200736

2013-11-02 Thread muss60
Hi Christopher,

I upgraded from 13.04 but unsure if I had this problem as I didn't have it
installed for long, I believe the last known working bluetooth was with
distro release 12.10 which was upgraded from 12.04LTS.
As a point of note, updates are installed as they arrive.

Kind regards

[Bug 411358]

2013-11-02 Thread A-pirard-papou
(In reply to Lester Canninga from comment #78)
How do I go about fixing this

A user-oriented bug system normally contains, beside Bug report, a How to
fix or workaround box explaining that in everyone's terms. Sometimes, WONTFIX
or WILLSLEEP of annoying features stain the wonderful picture of a program
and some users like this one compensate:
Permanent List-all-tabs Button 1.0 No Restart by Siddhartha Dugar
Bring back the List-all-tabs button (Removed from Firefox 12 in Bug 714281)

In this case, just change the annoying string if you edit or use Paolo's
HTML edit if that's e-mail you archive.

[Bug 1244619]

2013-11-02 Thread C2e9b7
Hi,
I had the same problem, and still had it with 24.1.0. Then I found this
workaround which solves the problem. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
a. mv ~/.thunderbird in ~/.thunderbird.old
b. update thunderbird (I had to do it as root)
c. run the new version of thunderbird (as user), skipping all the suggestions
to create an email account
d. install lightning (I also installed google calendar provider; you may need
to reinstall more)
e. restart thunderbird
f. copied back everithing from ~/.thunderbird.old/some random string
~/.thunderbird to the new ~/.thunderbird/some other random string besides the
following:
_CACHE_CLEAN_ chrome extensions extensions.ini TestPilotExperimentFiles

Note that I COPIED and not MOVED them back, because in case of problems I
wanted to be able to delete the new ~/.thunderbird directory without losing
anything. Maybe I could have copied back some more file, but everything seems
to work.
So in my opinion, there is some file left from old installs in those
directories, that disturbs the new version of Lightning. Anyway, now everything
works fine for me

[Bug 1242512] Re: Webcam Microsoft LifeCam VX-7000 not detected

2013-11-02 Thread Ben Walton
I'm having this issue as well. I just tried the following mainline
kernel per the instructions above and the symptoms are the same.

Linux gilmour 3.12.0-999-generic #201311020446 SMP Sat Nov 2 08:48:35
UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

(I had this problem mid 13.04 as well, but didn't spend any time looking
into the cause at that time...)

[Bug 1227687] Re: [MEDION UIM2080] Kernel 3.2.0-53-generic-pae freeze very often after update from 3.2.0-52-generic-pae

2013-11-02 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Kaiser Alexander, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available
(not the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom) following
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional
upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream
kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this
bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For
example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12-rc7

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next
to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please
remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's
Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your
understanding.

[Bug 1181828] Re: macbook air 2,1 no sound

2013-11-02 Thread Alberto Salvia Novella
acidjunk, the only thing needed for marking this bug as ready to be
worked on is this:

1. Search if the bug has already been reported in http://www.debian.org/Bugs/.
2. If it hasn't, report it following these instructions:
http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Reporting.
3. Here in Launchpad, at the beginning of this report , unfold the flange
preceding ALSA driver.
3. In the unfolded parameters, in the field URL, paste the URL where the
report for Debian is already written.

This will take you no more than 15 minutes.

Thank you ☕

[Bug 1247410] [NEW] lirc not working / irw hangs the system

2013-11-02 Thread swobu
Public bug reported:

My philips MCE USB receiver (mceusb device) does not work with Lirc.
System is ubuntu 12.04-mini.

Running irw does nothing, running it a second time gives Connection
refused.

xbmc@Media-PC:~$ irw
xbmc@Media-PC:~$ irw
connect: Connection refused

After the first irw, lirc is already 'hanging'! Restarting the lirc service at
this point will hang the terminal which you will try to run it from.
Sudo dpkg-reconfigure lirc will also hang the terminal plus give a
dpkg-configure -a error on next boot.
On reboot the system will hang as well, only option being REISUB.

[Bug 1247406] Re: 13.10 Installation

2013-11-02 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Vinicius Spader, as per
http://www.dell.com/support/troubleshooting/us/en/19/Product/inspiron-14-3420
an update is available for your BIOS (A10). If you update to this
following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change
anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Thank you for your understanding.

** Description changed:

My philips MCE USB receiver (mceusb device) does not work with Lirc.
  System is ubuntu 12.04-mini.

Running irw does nothing, running it a second time gives Connection
  refused.

  xbmc@Media-PC:~$ irw
  xbmc@Media-PC:~$ irw
  connect: Connection refused

After the first irw, lirc is already 'hanging'! Restarting the lirc service
will hang the terminal which you will try to run it from, sudo dpkg-reconfigure
lirc will also hang the terminal plus give a dpkg-configure -a error on next
boot.
On reboot the system will hang as well, only option being REISUB.

[Bug 1245147] Re: Ubuntu 13.10 does not boot from USB drive formatted in ext4

2013-11-02 Thread Luigi R.
I have tried again performing another installation from the CD-rom but
again grub does not start. The usb light is flashing few times and then
it stops.

I forgot to say that the usb is 3.0. Could be the problem? But why the
live installed on the same key it is working? Does grub depends on the
i915 or radeon drivers?

2013-11-02 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
dcialdella, as per
http://www.asus.com/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/K55A/#support an update is
available for your BIOS (407). If you update to this following
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BiosUpdate , does it change anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of
the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so
posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful.

For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 1239417] Re: ls /vagrant fails in 13.10 vagrant cloud image

2013-11-02 Thread Jakub Gocławski
This issue is VirtualBox (and kernel 3.11) related. Latest version of
VirtualBox 4.3 fixes this error.

https://www.virtualbox.org/changeset/48529/vbox

Unfortunatelly, the newest version of VirtualBox isn't available in
Ubuntu repos. You need to manually download and install it from here:
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads .

So how to fix it for Vagrant?

Well, you need to do 2 things:

1. Update VirtualBox to newest version on your host machine
(https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads)
2. When using official Ubuntu 13.10 box for Vagrant, you need to update it's
Guest Additions so it matches the host version of VirtualBox.

2a. Or you can wait till Ubuntu adds newest version of VirtualBox to
it's repos, so the box will have VirtualBox 4.3 installed, so to say,
out of the box ;)

[Bug 1239417] Re: ls /vagrant fails in 13.10 vagrant cloud image

2013-11-02 Thread Jakub Gocławski
I assumed Ubuntu is used as a host machine, my bad. I now reread the
original post and saw that Mac OS X is used.

What I mean is that you need VirtualBox 4.3 Guest Additions on the guest Ubuntu
13.10, but official Ubuntu 13.10 box has only VirtualBox 4.2.16.
Since the Guest Additions version must match the host machine VirtualBox
version, it means you need VirtualBox 4.3 on your host machine as well.

When you manage to install Guest Additions for version 4.3 on the Ubuntu
13.10 box, you can then save it for later use as described here:
http://docs-v1.vagrantup.com/v1/docs/getting-started/packaging.html

2013-11-02 Thread Dac Chartrand
Sorry, to be more Precise :) I did in fact install Precise on this
laptop. (2012-06-12) but I don't remember having this problem.

I had both a desktop and a laptop at that time, and I was using the
desktop tower more often than the laptop. I upgraded to Quantal and
began using the laptop more often when 12.10 was released. I first
notice the problem on 2012-11-23.

Executive summary: Cannot confirm.

 f. copied back everithing from ~/.thunderbird.old/some random string
~/.thunderbird to the new ~/.thunderbird/some other random string besides
 the following:
 _CACHE_CLEAN_ chrome extensions extensions.ini TestPilotExperimentFiles

Note that I COPIED and not MOVED them back, because in case of problems I
wanted to be able to delete the new ~/.thunderbird directory without losing
anything. Maybe I could have copied back some more file, but everything seems
 to work.
So in my opinion, there is some file left from old installs in those
directories, that disturbs the new version of Lightning. Anyway, now
 everything works fine for me

Thank you for taking the time to give me this information.

I may resort to doing it that way.

I currently don't use the calendar feature a great deal, so I'm hoping
within a month or two there will be an update from the repository that
will fix it.

If it goes too long, I will make good use of the excellent information
you took the time to put together and send me.

Sincerely,
Aere

[Bug 1245159] Re: Keyboard activity and mouse movements often interpreted as mouse clicks

2013-11-02 Thread Lars Noodén
Maybe. There was a similar bug with everything being double-clicks.
Here the mouse will click once on its own, not twice. Though if they
piggyback on a click they turn that into a double click. In that the
system was unusable for any purpose beyond testing the bug. In this,
the system is almost usable but for the risk of accidents. There's
nothing I can find to cause it to happen on purpose, no special
movements set it off. And a few times it has happened even with my
fingers off the trackpad.

[Bug 1245061] Re: muon-updater stuck at Loading Software List

2013-11-02 Thread Philip Guyton
I have also had this same Loading Software List hang
However this is not an upgrade but a completely clean Kubuntu 13.10 install
just now on a brand new drive.

During install I ticked mp3 software download, and download updates
during install whole disk with lvm.

A bog standard install almost.

First boot / login into KDE system and clicking on the gear / available
updates that appeared and Install Updates button.

Some activity and then Loading Software List with blue marker
perpetually moving back and forth.

last line in /var/log/dpkg.log is:-

status installed initramfs-tools:all 0.103ubuntu1

Shutdown via KDE and same logout cancelled by muon-updater as also
reported previously.

Ended process muon-updater via System Monitor and then Shutdown via KDE
menu - Searching for Additional Drivers dialog popped up momentarily
during KDE / system shutdown.

Hope this helps as its an almost instant failure of Kubuntu upon clean
install on clean hardware.

Changing the screen brightness always used to work on my HP Elitebook

+ Since the update to 13.10, this stopped working. Methods I have tried that
didn't work for adapting the brightness are:
  * Adding GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=acpi_backlight=vendor to /etc/default/grub
  * Adding GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=”acpi_osi=!Windows 2012 to /etc/default/grub

- None of them worked.

Currently I am changing the brightness manually using xrandr --output

[Bug 1247397] Re: pandaboard: under gdb, any program crashes with SIGILL

2013-11-02 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1247397/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 255601] Re: Hibernate not resuming on PC-Chips M811LU

2013-11-02 Thread Ronald
Mickey: Thank you for posting your results after your (probably) time
consuming research.

This used to work flawlessly with nouveau and (apparently) never with
the blob. I'm using your suggestion now.

For now, the nouveau drivers (apparently) suffers from the same issue.
But only after I upgraded to a new userspace (not the kernel).
