[Bug 1284635] Re: Keyboard layout changes after login

2014-03-16 Thread Woody
I seem to have had 2 separate issues with the keyboard.

The first being the text console was using US Keyboard settings rather
than UK. I think this may be related to console-setup not being able to
be installed. I installed the Mar 16 2014 daily xubuntu snapshot into
virtual box, and can confirm that console-setup was installed and
keyboard appears to function as expected.

Second issue was incorrect keyboard settings in X11. Should be UK but
appear to run as US. I seemed to find 2 seperate workarounds for this.

1)  from terminal run
  sudo apt-get remove ibus
iBus appears to be some kind of new input device manager. I assume this is not
yet configured to learn the installed language.

2)  Configure iBus
Right click the iBus / Keyboard indicator in the notification area, and select
preferences.
Click Input Method tab
Click customise active input methods
Click select an input method drop down, and choose English - English (UK,
extgended WinKeys)
Click Add
Close windows
Logout / Login or restart the ibus indicator

Hope this helps

Woody

[Bug 751689] Re: [Lenovo Thinkpad x201s] Overheat due to slow fans when on 'auto'

2014-03-16 Thread JohnWashington
 It isn't don't care so much as it is that the bug lies in the laptop's
bios, not linux.

I'm not competent to say whether it's in the bios, but for the sake of
discussion I can accept that. But it's noticeable that some of the
reports here are indicating that things were better in the past, then
got worse with later revisions of Ubuntu. Doesn't that indicate that,
regardless of where the bug lies, there is the possibility of working
around it outside the bios? Phillip, I don't feel you should dismiss
Mark so hastily.

That all said, clearly it's a problem that will be difficult for
developers to reproduce, and which factors such as exact hardware
revision, bios revision, thickness of fluff in the fan duct (!) and much
else will all influence. Good accurate reporting will be needed.

[Bug 1293243] [NEW] Compiz causes vertical tearing

2014-03-16 Thread tomdryer
Public bug reported:

Compiz causes noticeable vertical tearing (NOT horizontal tearing)
inside windows. It appears that there's a column ~450 pixels wide near
the left side of the screen that is redrawn at a slightly different
time. I first noticed this when scrolling and switching tabs in Chrome
or Firefox. It's most visible when rapidly switching between tabs with
different background colours.

Enabling the force full screen redraws (buffer swap) on repaint
workaround in CCSM fixes the issue completely.

2014-03-16 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
Yes, this general (too general IMO) bug is not fixed.

As regards the fix of bug #1288843, the format in the es_DO locale is
now small case, i.e. a.m. and p.m.. If application packages such as
indicator-datetime do something else, you may want to file bugs against
those packages.

Re: [Bug 1246236] Re: pxe boot from maas fails due to time out

2014-03-16 Thread Julian Edwards
On Friday 14 Mar 2014 09:37:18 you wrote:
 I was adviced to try rebooting the MAAS server (region and cluster
 controller on one box) which fixed the problem. But a subsequent reboot
 brought it back :/

I am pretty sure there's something wrong with some folks' networking setups
but I'm not sure what it is.

The timeouts on the TFTP server are very generous, it uses a backoff algorithm
and ends up as a few seconds. This should be more than enough for a local
network!

As a data point. I have seen this locally once when I mixed different types of
switches together (100MB and Gigabit) and went away as soon as I moved back to
a single speed network.

Re: [Bug 1291105] Re: After using spd-say (with pico TTS) with the root account, spd-say stops working for users

2014-03-16 Thread Luke Yelavich
I've actually got a better idea. Instead of checking the user id, we can
use XDG_RUNTIME_DIR as a base for the wav file. So something like
$XDG_RUNTIME_DIR/speech-dispatcher. That will be cleaned up when the
user logs out, and nobody then knows that another user is using speech-
dispatcher's generic synth mechanism. Probably not really a security
issue, but is still cleaner as this file is temporary for only the
logged in user, and only for their session.

I'll go ahead and implement this unless you have an objection.

This should not be a problem any more as the TFTP server should listen on all

Sorry to take so long to test it, but this hardware was my mom's one,
and she just can't test that to me. Besides that, I don't live close to

The latestest mainline kernel offered by jsalisbury seems to fix it.
Will it be available on the next ubuntu releases??

2014-03-16 Thread Tim Lander
Has this been looked at recently? I would really like to have this
feature working on my laptop. I run Ubuntu religiously but this is a
pain.

It worked in 12.04 LTS kernel 3.5 but after that it never worked again.

[Bug 1290717]

2014-03-16 Thread Dvratil
If you still run the stable database (from Akonadi 1.11) that you tried
to update to 1.12, could any of you please open Akonadi Console, go to
DB Console tab and run following query:

SELECT DISTINCT(name) FROM PartTable;

and post it's output here? The problem you ran into can only happen when some
of they part names don't have NAMESPACE:NAME format, which should not happen,
but it's possible that there are some legacy names I missed.

[Bug 1290717]

2014-03-16 Thread Dvratil
Ha! We found the culprit. GID is not supposed to be there, it's not a
part. It looks like after an update you started KMail, but did not
restart Akonadi, so KMail was sending the GID data, but Akonadi did
not know it so it though it's a part type.

You can run following query in DB Console to get rid of it:

DELETE FROM PartTable WHERE name = 'GID';

This will fix the migration to 1.12 for you. I'll add a check to Akonadi
to prevent this from happening to others.

I'm not sure if this is the right place, but based on the error log it
seemed right.

Anyways, I tried plugging in my two Dell monitors via display port to my
Lenovo x220 machine and it generated these errors in the system log.

I'm not sure if it's related, but the primary reason I opened this bug
was because the monitors will blank after a few minutes of activity. The
timeout period seems random and I can't really correlate it with any one
activity.

I'm running the latest version of the intel graphics drivers, 2013Q3.

You've come to the right place - if you're prepared to build your own
kernels. Please try the drm-intel-nightly branch of [1]. First, your
issues are related to hotplugging and display port link
training/maintenance, both of which have been updated and fixed
considerably in the latest kernels. It could be something we've taken
care of already. Second, I can't find a kernel version where your log
would match the source code; I can only presume it's a distro kernel
with some changes on top. So I don't know what exactly you're running
and what version I should be looking at.

Please report back; if the problem persist, attach the dmesg from early
boot to the problem, with drm.debug=0xe module parameter.

[Bug 1237556] Re: cryptsetup removed from initrd.img on upgrade to 13.10

2014-03-16 Thread Andres Gomez
It actually is a bug in Ubuntu because:

1. The /etc/crypttab was autogenerated during the installation. I never touched
it before. The warning was always there.
2. A WARNING, in a file that actually has 1 valid cryptsetup line shouldn't
lead to NOT including the cryptsetup tool in the initrd image. It is a WARNING,
not an ERROR. That WARNING was not preventing the installation of cryptsetup in
the initrd image until I upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10.

[Bug 1293263] [NEW] keyboard unreponsive at login

2014-03-16 Thread Nick
Public bug reported:

When attempting to login to 14.04 the keyboard on my laptop is usually
unresponsive. Caps lock seems to work and shows an exclamation mark in
the login prompt but typing in the password box does nothing and
pressing up/down keys to select a different user does not change the
user.

It seems the only way to get around the problem is to click on the menu
items in the top right corner (panel) and then the keyboard becomes
responsive.

[Bug 984523] Re: apt_pkg.Cache() E: Read error - read (21: is a directory)

2014-03-16 Thread cleary
I've just replicated it on a random 12.04.4 server vm
My debootstrap command:
# debootstrap precise ./chroot

Then use the python commands as listed above, and the same error
appears.

I've attached the output of the find command you requested

I also took this command, grep'd on ^d to filter directories, and did a
diff against the same output on a trusty host with a trusty debootstrap.
They have the same directories.

This is the same python commands run on the trusty host/trusty chroot (ie, how
the precise output should look):
 import apt_pkg
 import apt
 apt_pkg.init_config()
 apt_pkg.config.set('RootDir', '/media/fll/chroot/')
 apt_pkg.config.set('APT::Architecture', 'amd64')
 apt_pkg.init_system()
 apt_pkg.Cache(apt.progress.base.OpProgress())
apt_pkg.Cache object at 0x7f1fe1298518

Output from precise 12.04.4 host with precise chroot:
 import apt_pkg
 import apt
 apt_pkg.init_config()
 apt_pkg.config.set('RootDir',
... '/root/chroot/')
 apt_pkg.config.set('APT::Architecture', 'amd64')
 apt_pkg.init_system()
 apt_pkg.Cache(apt.progress.base.OpProgress())
Traceback (most recent call last):

SystemError: E:Read error - read (21: Is a directory), E:The package lists or
status file could not be parsed or opened.

[Bug 1268072] Re: byobu color prompt doesn't work correctly

2014-03-16 Thread Dustin Kirkland 
Adding the Ubuntu package to this bug, since your screenshots and info
here clearly show you're running Ubuntu.

I still haven't managed to reproduce this problem.

I suspect that there might be something funny in your ~/.profile or
~/.bashrc? Could you back those up, and then install the stock ones
from Ubuntu? Just copy over /etc/profile and /etc/bash.bashrc over
those files, and start byobu fresh.

Re: [Bug 1237556] Re: cryptsetup removed from initrd.img on upgrade to 13.10

 It actually is a bug in Ubuntu because:

 1. The /etc/crypttab was autogenerated during the installation. I never
 touched it before. The warning was always there.

In that case, it would be a bug in whatever method you used to install
Ubuntu, yes. Please provide us details on how you installed Ubuntu, so we
can reproduce this error.

 2. A WARNING, in a file that actually has 1 valid cryptsetup line
 shouldn't lead to NOT including the cryptsetup tool in the initrd image.

Yes, it should. It was a bug that we were unconditionally installing
cryptsetup to the initramfs before for all users that had cryptsetup
installed, bloating the initramfs and slowing down their boot. This bug has
now been *fixed*, and in the process it has exposed a problem with your
system. That may, as you say, also be a bug in the Ubuntu installer; but
that is NOT grounds for restoring the previous buggy behavior.

[Bug 1293287] [NEW] xubuntu 14.04 'xfdesktop --reload' no longer cycles wallpaper image

2014-03-16 Thread Doug Barton
Public bug reported:

In the past I have relied on the following behavior (still) described in
the xfdesktop man page to change my desktop wallpaper:

 -R, --reload
  Causes an already-running instance of xfdesktop to reload all
its settings, including loading a new random backdrop if using a
  backdrop list.

I realize that the wallpaper image code is significantly improved in
14.04, however this feature seems to have gone missing. I also realize
that there are built in options to rotate the wallpaper automatically in
a variety of ways, however the particular method I like to use (rotate
at set times, like hour:00, hour:30, etc.) isn't one of those
options.

If 'xfdesktop --reload' were fixed to do the rotation again my old
script would work, problem solved. :) If that's not possible then
consider this a feature request to add the ability to schedule rotation
every N minutes relative to the top of the hour (as opposed to relative
to log in, which it does now).

To reproduce:

1. Right-click on desktop, choose Desktop Settings
2. Under the Folder: pull down menu choose a folder with multiple images
3. Optional: Click Change the Background, choose Every hour from the pull
down, and check the Random Order box
4. Click Close
5. On the command line, run 'xfdesktop --reload'

The desktop should refresh itself, but nothing will happen to the
wallpaper

FWIW, the way that it worked for many releases of XFCE prior to xubuntu
14.04 was to go to Desktop Settings and configure an image list without
checking the change the background box. Then 'xfdesktop --reload' just
did the rotation randomly.
