[Bug 1220426] Re: [nvidia-prime]Freeze while using touchpad

2014-09-12 Thread Andrey Konstantinov
Highly sporadic? I beg to differ. It can be reproduced easily after
switching to the nVIDIA card and if you want to accelerate the rate at
which it manifests, just play some Civilization V :) Still - I am very
happy to hear that nVIDIA is watching the bug somewhat, hopefully the
solution will be found at some point (and not just for Utopic but also
at least for Trusty which is the latest LTS release)

[Bug 1368851] [NEW] adding image creates a confusing transfer in progress window

2014-09-12 Thread James Hunt
Public bug reported:

1) Add contact.
2) Touch '+' to add a picture.
3) Select a data source (gallery, camera, file manager, etc).
4) Slow swipe from right to show all running apps windows.
5) Observe an app window that has a spinner on a white dialog background with
text Transfer in progress along with a cancel button.

Presumably (5) is somehow connecting the address book and the data
source (file manager say), like an Android Intent, but do we really need
to see this app window? The answer currently seems to be sometimes:

- If I select gallery as the data source in (3) the top of the gallery
window shows a cross which, if clicked, closes both gallery *and* the
Transfer in progress window. So for gallery, the Transfer in
progress seems entirely redundant.

- If I select file manager as the data source in (3) the top of the file
manager window does not show a cross so the way to abort the attach
image to new contact operation seems to be to click cancel on the
Transfer in progress window (or just close the file manager).

The above suggests that all the data sources should support the
interface that the gallery seems to. That way, this confusing Transfer
window can die.

2014-09-12 Thread Hendrik Knackstedt
Ok, THAT is interesting. Maybe it is just a coincidence that you mention
Civilization V but this was also when I encountered the bug for the
first time. Since than it has also occurred when NOT playing that game
but it was the first time.

On my system (Acer Aspire 5750G) the problem is also not sporadic but
occurs very often, mostly after a few minutes. If using the workaround
to switch to a different VT and switch back the bug will be back within
seconds or minutes.

[Bug 1368856] [NEW] [Indicators] Update indicators to match the latest design

2014-09-12 Thread Vesa Rautiainen
Public bug reported:

There is a new indicators design that improves and fixes many of the
usability issues in the current design.

New design fixes following issues:
1. Too small target size for reliably making selection - false positives
2. Current design doesn’t support overflow. Or inactive items so that their
menu could be accessed.
3. Movement overload when item changes while going down.
4. Tabs. Deprecated component and poor navigation.
5. Invisible locking line in mid point of the screen.

Specification can be found here:
https://docs.google.com/a/canonical.com/document/d/1jHIGzAzf7kFELgOiU9J0Hd9mOa3NzTsnEglLmx_qEfk/edit

There is also a prototype of the new design:
It can be found here: lp:~willow-team/willow/Indicators-Bens-idea/

There is also a screencast video of the prototype in action here:

I noticed this a few weeks ago and it has not been rectified.

I have asked the osmtouch developers if they know about it
https://answers.launchpad.net/osmtouch/+question/254334

Digging into it today I found the following after running OSM Touch and
touching the location detection arrow :-

phablet@ubuntu-phablet:/$ cat
/var/log/ubuntu-location-service/com.ubuntu.location.WARNING
Log file created at: 2014/09/11 15:24:31
Running on machine: ubuntu-phablet
Log line format: [IWEF]mmdd hh:mm:ss.uu threadid file:line] msg
E0911 15:24:31.517678 2420 skeleton.cpp:177] Error creating session: Client
lacks permissions to access the service with the given criteria
E0912 08:52:39.514560 2419 skeleton.cpp:177] Error creating session: Client
lacks permissions to access the service with the given criteria

So it seems like a permissions issue?

Also, going back to the start of the warnings:-

phablet@ubuntu-phablet:/$ cat
/var/log/ubuntu-location-service/com.ubuntu.location.ubuntu-phablet.invalid-user.log.WARNING.20140809-134227.916
Log file created at: 2014/08/09 13:42:27
Running on machine: ubuntu-phablet
Log line format: [IWEF]mmdd hh:mm:ss.uu threadid file:line] msg
W0809 13:42:27.226502 916 ofono_nm_connectivity_manager.cpp:171] Exception
while creating connected radio cell: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.UnknownMethod:
Method GetProperties with signature on interface
org.ofono.NetworkRegistration doesn't exist

All warnings are the same as above until:-

phablet@ubuntu-phablet:/$ cat
/var/log/ubuntu-location-service/com.ubuntu.location.ubuntu-phablet.invalid-user.log.WARNING.20140822-100144.924
Log file created at: 2014/08/22 10:01:44
Running on machine: ubuntu-phablet
Log line format: [IWEF]mmdd hh:mm:ss.uu threadid file:line] msg
E0822 10:01:44.903519 1942 skeleton.cpp:177] Error creating session: Client
lacks permissions to access the service with the given criteria

Then:-

phablet@ubuntu-phablet:/$ cat
/var/log/ubuntu-location-service/com.ubuntu.location.ubuntu-phablet.invalid-user.log.WARNING.20140827-070346.912
Log file created at: 2014/08/27 07:03:46
Running on machine: ubuntu-phablet
Log line format: [IWEF]mmdd hh:mm:ss.uu threadid file:line] msg
E0827 07:03:46.443877 912 ofono_nm_connectivity_manager.cpp:141] Error while
setting up access to radio and network stack:
org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Spawn.ChildExited: Launch helper exited with unknown
return code 1

Then the rest are the permissions errors with one more of the Error
wile setting up access errors.

And for reference:-
phablet@ubuntu-phablet:/$ system-image-cli -i
current build number: 203
device name: mako
channel: ubuntu-touch/utopic
last update: 2014-08-22 07:57:57
version version: 203
version ubuntu: 20140821.1
version device: 20140811.1

last update: 2014-08-22 07:57:57 corresponds to the start of the
permissions errors.

Also, thinking back, location detection was definitely working on 1st of
July which was prior to me upgrading to utopic.

[Bug 1368864] [NEW] old motd is displayed on login

2014-09-12 Thread Simon Déziel
Public bug reported:

On Trusty, during login, the motd displayed is from the cache file
/run/motd.dynamic. After being displayed, the scripts from /etc/update-
motd.d are run to refresh /run/motd.dynamic. This behavior of displaying
the cache first is not very convenient and didn't happen on Precise.
This is also does not match the documentation (man 5 update-motd) nor
the users' expectations.

Steps to reproduce:

$ cat  EOF | sudo tee /etc/update-motd.d/60-test
#!/bin/sh
printf motd from: $(date +%T)\n
EOF
$ sudo chmod +x /etc/update-motd.d/60-test

$ echo 'echo real time: $(date +%T);exit' | ssh -T localhost

 * Documentation:  https://help.ubuntu.com/
motd from: 6:05:43
real time: 12:36:14

The above is just an example of how old/stale the output can be.

[Bug 1368724] Re: Xen guests may hang after migration or suspend/resume

2014-09-12 Thread David Vrabel
FYI, resume is an integral part of migration or domain restore. I've
adjusted the test case accordingly.

** Description changed:

  [Impact]
  Xen guests may hang during resume after a migration or suspend. The
predominately affects HVM guests.

  [Test Case]
- Create a Xen guest and attempt to resume after a migration or suspend
hundreds of times.
+ Create a Xen guest and attempt to migrate or save/restore (suspend/resume)
hundreds of times.

  [Fix]
  The following upstream commits (tagged for stable) fix the hangs.

  x86/xen: resume timer irqs early

https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=8d5999df35314607c38fbd6bdd709e25c3a4eeab

  and

  xen/manage: Always freeze/thaw processes when suspend/resuming

https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=61a734d305e16944b42730ef582a7171dc733321

  Both are clean cherry-picks.

2014-09-12 Thread Alexander
Ubuntu 14.04 x64. The bug occurs in different situations, but definetely it
occurs when
1) new folder is created;
2) user doesn't remove focus from folder renaming field;
3) user changes keyboard layout.
4) focus leaving folder renaming field (don't know is that bug or not) and from
now user can't copy/paste files.

[Bug 1346868] Re: Canon MX310 printer hangs when printing LibreOffice Writer doc

2014-09-12 Thread JohnWashington
I have the MX310 printer on loan again for a short time. I suspected
that the behaviour, with the printer hanging up and requiring the power
plug to be pulled to recover, while Ubuntu was fine, is perhaps due to a
firmware error. After all, no matter what one throws at the printer, it
shouldn't lock up, right? But I've downloaded the firmware update
program (Windows and Mac only, grrr) using XP and found that the
firmware is already at 1.040, Canon's latest version.

On XP the printer prints the example doc (supplied above) without
incident, again using Libre Office.

[Bug 1368836] Re: [gallery] add wallpaper to the content hub

2014-09-12 Thread Jouni Helminen
Agree with Pad, should be Background everywhere.

Will mark this a low priority as there is already a way to achieve this
through system settings - and I guess adding Background in content hub
would require a fair amount of work

[Bug 1368821] Re: language switching works incorrect

Thanks for your report.

When switching language, did you possibly use the shortcut for switching
to the *previous* source? In that case it's the expected result, and
that's the only way I can reproduce the behaviour you describe.

[Bug 1366451] Re: mksh -v should display mksh's version number, plus the attached chunk of text, onscreen

2014-09-12 Thread Jason Spiro
 Nothing against your intent, or beginners, or something, but Android
 is really not the OS one should be learning a Unix shell in.

You are correct. Still, if someone owns only a Windows box and an
Android phone, they might end up starting their learning on Android
anyway.

 And mksh is first and foremost a Berkeley Unix shell.

Fine. But today, I noticed that you also maintain the stock Android
mkshrc[*].  :)

^  [*].
https://android.googlesource.com/platform/external/mksh/+/master/mkshrc

mksh takes up more than 100 KB, and typical new Android phones seem to
include gigabytes of flash memory. I still believe Android could afford
the bytes it would cost to include a help function in
/system/bin/mkshrc which would display something like the following.

--- start of help ---

This is mksh, the MirBSD Korn Shell. You can use a shell to perform
advanced administrative and troubleshooting tasks on your device. You
can also use it to capture screenshots and screencasts.

To work with files and directories:
See http://www.cs.bu.edu/teaching/unix/reference/commands.html.

To work with Android logs, packages, databases, screencasts, and the like:
See http://developer.android.com/tools/help/adb.html#shellcommands.

If you have a question, comment, bug report, or suggestion:
Please visit http://android.stackexchange.com/.

--- end of help ---

This would help new mksh users realize how many things they truly can do
in an Android shell. For example, they might have had no idea that they
could capture screenshots and screencasts using the command line; but a
help message can inform them.

[Bug 1338919] Re: [F06A]The information - CPU cores is incorrect in Ubuntu14.04 cpuinfo.

2014-09-12 Thread Samantha Jian-Pielak
It's been noticed that the COD (cluster-on-die) is enabled in BIOS, the
cpuinfo reports 5 cores instead of 10 cores. If COD is disabled, then it
reports 10 cores as expected.

Cluster On Die can be understood as if you split the CPU and LLC into
two parts that behave like two CPUs in NUMA. The OS is presented two
affinity domains. As a result, the latency of LLC is lowered, but the
hitrate is slightly lower. However if your application is NUMA aware,
data and instructions are kept close to the part of the CPU that is
processing them. http://www.anandtech.com/show/8423/intel-

2014-09-12 Thread Jahidul Hamid

sorry for late reply.
Do you use dual boot with windows, or ubuntu is the only system

As I have a dual boot system with windows and xubuntu now, the same
thing happens to me (checks password for long and doesn't connect) when
I go to windows and return to xubuntu.

I have worked around it be simply shutting down xubuntu once and
starting again. Reboot porabably don't work.

Had the same problem with Linux Mint 17 cinnamon and Linux Mint 17 XFCE
too...

[Bug 1368878] [NEW] MAAS resets the OS and Release for a node when the node is stopped.

2014-09-12 Thread Brad Figg
Public bug reported:

MAAS 1.6

With the GUI I modify the OS and Release for a single node. I set them
to Ubuntu and Ubuntu 14.10. I then start the node and it starts up
just fine. I then stop the node, edit the node and those fields are set
back to Default OS and Latest Ubuntu Release. If I've manually set
those fields, they should persist across start/stop.

[Bug 1323089] Re: wpa_supplicant writes to syslog every 2 minutes

2014-09-12 Thread Jon Fawbert
Specifically, the messages discussed are different:

May 25 19:57:18 ubuntu wpa_supplicant[1161]: wlan0: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-STARTED
May 25 19:57:23 ubuntu wpa_supplicant[1161]: nl80211:
send_and_recv-nl_recvmsgs failed: -33

vs from 57843:

May 10 20:06:37 Otherland wpa_supplicant[1741]: WPS-AP-AVAILABLE
May 10 20:07:37 Otherland wpa_supplicant[1741]: WPS-AP-AVAILABLE
May 10 20:08:37 Otherland wpa_supplicant[1741]: WPS-AP-AVAILABLE
May 10 20:09:48 Otherland avahi-daemon[1705]: Invalid query packet.
May 10 20:11:01 Otherland avahi-daemon[1705]: last message repeated 2 times
May 10 20:14:49 Otherland avahi-daemon[1705]: Invalid query packet.
May 10 20:15:37 Otherland avahi-daemon[1705]: last message repeated 2 times

and the fact that some posters are reporting that the first set of
messages are accompanied by repeated loss of wifi connectivity,
suggesting that they indicate a failure which is impactful to wifi
state.

Both sets of messages are repeated causing the spamming issue which
creates a smiliarity but not an identical match in my opinion.

I had no intention of causing offence however and apologise if any was
taken.

[Bug 874211] Re: mini-preview of minimized Google Chrome windows blank

2014-09-12 Thread Greggth
Hi,
I think I'm having the same problem, as well as another related one.
1) I see similar, but slightly different behavior with the preview:
Use system title bar and borders *checked* -- preview broken sometimes.
Use system title bar and borders *unchecked -- preview broken sometimes.

2) The other problem: After being minimized, the window comes up all white
except for the title bar. It doesn't re-render the screen until it's resized.
This is really annoying, but I don't know if should be considered part of the
same bug. There's another bug in Chromium that sounds somewhat like this, but
maybe not exactly the same either
(https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=340138)
Use system title bar and borders *checked* window restores as blank white
window.
Use system title bar and borders *unchecked* window restores properly

Is it normal the builds are rc2 when previous tests show the issue ended
between rc3 and rc4 ?

[Bug 1241986] Re: Cannot connect to WPA/WPA2, EAP-PEAP, MSCHAPV2 network

2014-09-12 Thread Mathijs Veen
I got this working with Cyphermox 's help: Here is whats needed in terms
of configs:

manually edit /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/my-peap-network-filename
Here is how it should look:

///

[connection]
id=my-peap-network-filename
uuid=43751181-27bc-4184-a9b9-3adaf9e914eb
type=802-11-wireless

[802-11-wireless-security]
key-mgmt=wpa-eap

[802-11-wireless]
ssid=my-peap-network-filename
mode=infrastructure
mac-address=E8:92:A4:9B:69:42
security=802-11-wireless-security

[802-1x]
eap=peap;
identity=myusername
phase2-auth=mschapv2
password=mypassword

[ipv4]
method=auto

[ipv6]
method=auto

///

set permission of /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/my-peap-
network-filename  to  600, and do a touch

thats all. Appearantly there is (at least in my network) no need to
actively ignore the cert acceptance.

So i suppose this part is solved. I will do another bugreport as a
feature request for a UI for all this. When i do, I will post the
buglink here

[Bug 1366586] Re: Music app stops playing when an app plays a sound

2014-09-12 Thread Sam Bull
Yes, but my point is that if developers miss the documentation, and
don't set this setting, it shouldn't cause disruption to the whole
platform, which is what will currently happen.

If alerts is the default, then a developer not selecting multimedia for
their app will only disrupt their own app, and will more likely be
caught and fixed.

Currently, not changing the setting to alerts cause the developers app
to work perfectly fine, but causes the rest of the platform to suffer as
it cuts off music etc. Somebody with less familiarity with the platform
will likely register bugs against the music-app or the platform, as it
appears that the music is not functioning, thus further reducing the
chances of the guilty app getting fixed.

[Bug 1368901] [NEW] /bin/mail is hardcoded into module

2014-09-12 Thread Tom
Public bug reported:

It seems that use of the DOSEmailNotify doesn't work, as /bin/mail is
hardcoded in the module and there does not appear to be a method to
override it.

I could in theory symlink /bin/mail to /usr/bin/mail, but this is gross,
prone to error and the only notification that there is a
misconfiguration is sh: /bin/mail not found in
/var/log/apache2/error.log.
