[Bug 1645115] Re: Auto update frequency isn't proper

2016-12-02 Thread Tyler Hicks
Hi - thanks for the bug report!

It looks like you may have a modified /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-
upgrades file. Possibly because you upgraded from an earlier release?

I'll attach the file from one of my pristine 16.04 machines. Can you
adjust yours to match and see if it fixes things for you?

[Bug 1451728] Re: [master] kde-config-telepathy-accounts package install error

2016-12-02 Thread Robert Bredereck
1. Many (non-expert, just) users are heavily affected by this bug. In fact,
everyone that wants to install KDE and another major desktop environment in
parallel will fail. Some will quite likely give up using (K)Ubuntu. (If even
such simple things do not work easily...)
2. It was opened in May 2015.
3. This bug only exists because of wrong file/path names. You do not need to be
a genius hacker to fix it.
4. It was resolved upstream in February 2016.
5. It was promised to be resolved for Ubuntu 16.04.
6. Now, almost two months after Ubuntu 16.10 was released, it still exists.

The history of this bug tells a lot about the current status of
(K)Ubuntu.

Ubuntu: Nobody cares much about things beyond Unity.
Kubuntu: Nobody (if anyone is still working on it) cares about things beyond
Plasma.

PS: I know that bashing here does not help much. However, most likely
nothing will help at this stage...

2016-12-02 Thread Tyler Hicks
Also, while looking through the /var/log/apt/history.log on that
machine, I note that you won't see unattended-upgrade entry every day.
Instead, you'll only see those entries when there's a security update
available from xenial-security. Note that you may have other pending
updates, from xenial-updates, but those aren't security updates and will
not be applied automatically.

[Bug 1646248] Re: Injecting DHCP configuration from Hyper-V host fails

2016-12-02 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v4.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 1639180] Re: no login possible after update to nvidia 304.132

2016-12-02 Thread comu
It also affects to my computer. (Ubuntu 16.04. Then I updated to 16.10
and still the same bug, so now I'm using the open drivers).

I don't understand why this critical bug which makes your computer
useless is not solved yet.

You should realize that maybe thousands of computers can't log in because of
this bug.
And you should understand that an average person isn't going to know that the
problem is in their drivers, and they also won't be able to update their
computers because they can't login.

So, in conclusion, most of the computers which are broken now won't be
able to work again because many users don't know how to update them
without a graphical interface.

But the worst of it is that one month after the bug appeared, it is still
unsolved.
This bug should be solved one month ago!

[Bug 1645038] Re: system installation failed

2016-12-02 Thread Phillip Susi
Your disk is currently partitioned to boot in bios mode, but you booted
the installer in EFI mode. A warning message prompted you that this
could be a problem and recommended performing a bios mode install
instead, but you chose not to. You either need to perform the bios mode
install, or partition the disk using GPT and set up an EFI system
partition to install in EFI mode. This will be done for you if you
choose the "use entire disk" guided install option.

[Bug 1645232] Re: e2fsprogs - could not preserve ACL permissions : The getxattr() returns with (EINVAL)

2016-12-02 Thread Tyler Hicks
Hello and thanks for the bug report!

I was tempted to mark this bug as invalid since you compiled e2fsprogs
from git and aren't using Ubuntu's e2fsprogs. However, I see that
yakkety (16.10) and zesty both have a new enough e2fsprogs to support
the -d option. I tried your reproducer in yakkety, using e2fsprogs
1.43.3-1, and can confirm what you're seeing.

It looks like this is a known issue:

  https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-ext4/msg43058.html

A note to anyone thinking about fixing this bug in Ubuntu: The Ubuntu
Security team doesn't consider this to be a security issue and doesn't
have plans to fix this issue. Feel free to take a fix through the SRU
process.

[Bug 1646565] Re: GPF when removing lots of files from hfsplus partition

2016-12-02 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a
prior kernel version where you were not having this particular problem?

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer
to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest
v4.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as
"Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 1639930] Re: initramfs network configuration ignored if only ip6= on kernel command line

2016-12-02 Thread Scott Moser
** Description changed:

+
+ === Begin SRU Template ===
+ [Impact]
+ On a system booted with both ip6= and ip= on the kernel command line
+ cloud-init will raise an exception and fail to process user-data and
+ have its normal affect on boot.
+
+ That is because cloud-init previously raised an exception when more
+ than one file in /run/net*.conf declared the same DEVICE. Changes to
+ isc-dhcp and initramfs-tools have changed their behavior and cloud-init
+ has to adjust to allow DEVICE6= and DEVICE= in separate files.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Boot a system on a network with both ipv4 and ipv6 dhcp servers,
+ and pass kernel command line with:
+ ip=dhcp ip6=dhcp
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Regression seems unlikely as this is relaxing a check. Where previously
+ an exception would have been raised, cloud-init will now go on.
+
+ So it seems most likely, something that didn't work before (due to raised
+ exception) would now still not work, but with failures. That is not
+ expected, but that would likely be where regressions were found.
+
+ === End SRU Template ===
+
In changes made under bug 1621615 (specifically a1cdebdea), we now
expect that there may be a 'ip6=' argument on the kernel command line.
The changes made did not test the case where there is 'ip6=' and no
  'ip='.

The code currently will return with no network configuration found if
  there is only ip6=...

[Bug 1642679] Re: The OpenStack network_config.json implementation fails on Hyper-V compute nodes

2016-12-02 Thread Scott Moser
** Description changed:

+ === Begin SRU Template ===
+ [Impact]
+ When a config drive provides network_data.json on Azure OpenStack,
+ cloud-init will fail to configure networking.
+
+ Console log and /var/log/cloud-init.log will show:
+ ValueError: Unknown network_data link type: hyperv
+
+ This woudl also occur when the type of the network device as declared
+ to cloud-init was 'hw_veb', 'hyperv', or 'vhostuser'.
+
+ [Test Case]
+ Launch an instance with config drive on hyperv cloud.
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Low to none. cloud-init is relazing requirements and will accept things
+ now that it previously complained were invalid.
+ === End SRU Template ===
+
We have discovered an issue when booting Xenial instances on OpenStack
environments (Liberty or newer) and Hyper-V compute nodes using config
  drive as metadata source.

When applying the network_config.json, cloud-init fails with this error:
  http://paste.openstack.org/show/RvHZJqn48JBb0TO9QznL/

The fix would be to add 'hyperv' as a link type here:
  /usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/cloudinit/sources/helpers/openstack.py, line
587

[Bug 1646886] [NEW] smartmontools does not use current notifier

2016-12-02 Thread KeithG
Public bug reported:

This package is broken. The smartmon tools use commands which are no
longer in 16.04.

Example:

/etc/smartmontools/run.d/10powersave-notify

#! /bin/sh

# Send message if /usr/lib/powersave/powersave-notify exists or exit silently
[ -x /usr/lib/powersave/powersave-notify ] || exit 0

/usr/lib/powersave/powersave-notify "Your hard disk drive is failing!
S.M.A.R.T. message:
$SMARTD_MESSAGE"

/usr/lib/powersave does not exisat nor does powersave-notify exist
anywhere in 16.04 even after powersave-notify is installed. I tried to
edit the script to run /usr/bin/smart-notifier whichj does exist, but
the script fails with

/usr/share/smart-notifier/smart_notifier/gui.py:23: PyGIWarning: Gtk was
imported without specifying a version first. Use gi.require_version('Gtk',
'3.0') before import to ensure that the right version gets loaded.
  from gi.repository import Gtk

I think this is a bit scary. The user will get no warnings that his disk
is failing due to this error.

+
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ Change from using Megabytes to Sectors could have caused math errors,
+ most likely with sector sizes other than 512.
+ Partitioning with sfdisk was broken previously, so it wont be worse.
+
+ === End SRU Template ===
+
Specifically, we get the following output in
  cc_disk_setup.exec_mkpart_mbr:

sfdisk: --Linux option is unnecessary and deprecated
  sfdisk: unsupported unit 'M'

  and the manpage says:

     -u, --unit S
Deprecated option. Only the sector unit is supported.

So we'll need to shift to using sectors.

[Bug 1645232] Re: e2fsprogs - could not preserve ACL permissions : The getxattr() returns with (EINVAL)

2016-12-02 Thread Tyler Hicks
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

** Attachment added: "UdevLog.txt"

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1646868/+attachment/4786532/+files/UdevLog.txt

** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => Confirmed

** Description changed:

The installation of linux-image-3.13.0-85 messed up my video. The upper
left corner of the screen works fine, but as you get to the right, the
images wobble and renders out of sync. Running an old version of the
kernel solved the issue, that is why I think this image is the culprit.

I am running Ubuntu 14.04. The computer has an intel card:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Xeon E3-1200 v3/4th

[Bug 1646895] [NEW] Unity desktop confused by AppleRAID volumes

2016-12-02 Thread Jack Howarth
Public bug reported:

On a MacPro 3,1 with a stock installation of Ubuntu 16.10 amd64 from
ubuntu-16.10-desktop-amd64.iso , the mounted volumes on the Dock of the
Desktop are incorrect. The machine has three SATA drives installed. Two
of these are formatted as RAID-1 slices of an AppleRAID Journaled HFS
volume. Those two slices appear as separate hard drive icons in the Dock
(both being labelled 'Macintosh HD') which is the correct AppleRAID
volume name. However these two hard drive icons (both labelled
'Macintosh HD') are unresponsive to clicks. The third SATA drive, a
normal Journaled HFS volume 'El Capitan HD' is mounted as expected in at
"/media/howarth/El Capitan HD". Neither the AppleRAID slices nor the
AppleRAID volume itself appears in /media/howarth as a mounted volume.

I wonder how much of this problem is related to EFI support. The option
boot selector on Intel Macs displays each of the AppleRAID slices as
individual bootable volumes (eg 'Macintosh HD' and 'Macintosh HD 1').
Perhaps the two dead hard drive icons in the Unity desktop Dock are a
side effect of that behavior in EFI (which doesn''t show the combined
AppleRAID volume in the boot selector).

[Bug 1638836] Re: resolv.conf for resolved stub server should have a comment how to see the actual servers

2016-12-02 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package network-manager - 1.4.2-2ubuntu4

---
network-manager (1.4.2-2ubuntu4) zesty; urgency=medium

  [ Martin Pitt ]
  * Add resolved DNS plugin (backported from upstream master).
  * Disable resolvconf support.
This is broken with DNS plugins other than "dnsmasq" -- it still writes
127.0.1.1 into resolvconf as a nameserver, but this does not exist any more
and
will also shadow resolved's stub server on 127.0.0.53.
This ought to be fixed more properly in the future.

  [ Steve Langasek ]
  * Re-drop dnsmasq in zesty, in favor of systemd-resolved.
This unifies DNS lookups between Ubuntu desktop and server.
But don't Recommend libnss-resolve, because the local resolver +
libnss_dns.so
should suffice for all uses and the resolved nss module is unnecessary added
complexity.
We need to specify "dns=systemd-resolved" as for the time being our
/etc/resolv.conf points to resolvconf's generated file instead of
systemd-resolved's, so the auto-detection does not work. Do that in a
separate conf.d file in /usr to avoid unnecessary conffile prompts in the
future. The user can still override it in /etc. (LP: #1638836)

[Bug 1638708] Re: Hardcoded paths in desktop files need to be processed need $SNAP prefixing

2016-12-02 Thread Rodney Dawes
Yeah, the indicators all ship upstart jobs, systemd units, and autostart
.desktop files.

There are some cases where indicators need fixed in other ways to deal
with similarly related issues (parsing other .desktop files), but
generally the data/*.desktop.in files aren't a problem here, from what I
can see.

that are installed in the XDG autostart directory, and thus only used in
environments which use that, of which Unity8 is not one, especially so
in its snap form.

I suppose this also begs the question of whether Unity 8 should
implement the XDG autostart spec?

[Bug 1638708] Re: Hardcoded paths in desktop files need to be processed need $SNAP prefixing

2016-12-02 Thread Michael Terry
Let's not transform this bug into a feature request for u8. :)

(Though just converting autostart files to systemd user-units is
probably a better use of our time?)

But your point about not worrying about converting .desktop files that
are only used for xdg-autostarting makes sense.

[Bug 1641593] Re: unable to enable iommu on HPE Proliant Gen9 server

2016-12-02 Thread Joseph Salisbury
Thanks for the update. That would make it difficult to know if this is
a regression, or if this bug always existed.

It might be worth while testing the latest Xenial kernel in -proposed:
https://launchpad.net/~canonical-kernel-team/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+build/11278866

The 4.9-rc7 kernel is now also available, and might be worth testing. It is
available from:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.9-rc7/

2016-12-02 Thread Joseph Salisbury
The -proposed kernel should be kernel 4.4.0-52.73. Can you run sudo
apt-get update again?

If you still don't get the kernel, it can be downloaded directly from:
