[Bug 1703423] [NEW] zesty qemu packages (2.8) released for xenial-updates
Public bug reported: Xenial hosts that run apt-get update; apt-get dist-upgrade are getting 2.8 (zesty) versions of the qemu packages. Example: Unpacking qemu-system-x86 (1:2.8+dfsg-3ubuntu2.3~cloud0) over (1:2.5+dfsg-5ubuntu10.14) ... This is causing instances to not boot under qemu as the default hardware type is set to pc-i440fx-zesty in these packages. If you override that setting and boot with pc-i440fx-xenial the instance will start. The odd thing too is the https://packages.ubuntu.com/xenial-updates/qemu page shows Xenial should still be on the 2.5 version series, but if you do an apt-get dist-upgrade you get zesty packages. [Bug 1347726] Re: ubuntu14.04 installation hang on "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions"
I was running into the same issue and finally by luck happened upon a set of slides that allowed me to automate this and there was an accompanying code repository with the full preseed file. https://github.com/uweplonus/adia- install/blob/master/initrd/preseed.cfg#L3 Many people suggest using `preseed/early_command umount /media/*` but this hasn't worked for quite some time due to the timing of when the preseed portion runs compared to the partitioning. The correct way to do this is to add the following anywhere in your preseed file that is referenced by the boot command. ```d-i partman/early_command string \ USBDEV=$(list-devices usb-partition | sed "s/\(.*\)./\1/");\ BOOTDEV=$(list-devices disk | grep -v "$USBDEV" | head -1);\ debconf-set partman-auto/disk $BOOTDEV;\ debconf-set grub-installer/bootdev $BOOTDEV; \ umount /media; ``` -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1347726 Title: ubuntu14.04 installation hang on "The installer has detected that the following disks have mounted partitions" To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debian-installer/+bug/1347726/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1703440] [NEW] xenial fio 2.2.10 randwrite: "random" data NOT random, highly compressible -> highly misleading output
Public bug reported: $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 16.04.2 LTS Release:16.04 Package: fio (2.2.10-1ubuntu1) [universe] I've been using fio to look at the effect of zfs recordsize on random writes to a zfs dataset. After wasting the better part of a day trying to understand fio's unrealistically high reported bandwidth I finally used hexcurse to have a look at one of the files that fio allocated before doing its randwrite benchmark. I discovered that chunks that were supposed to be random data were in fact highly non-random; each "random" chunk was identical (or nearly so) to the previous "random" chunk. In case the zfs dataset uses compression (lz4 is on by default) the data end up being highly compressed before writing to disk, severely distorting the reported benchmark results. For example, for this fio command: fio \ --name=random-writers \ --ioengine=sync \ --direct=0 \ --rw=randwrite \ --bs=512k \ --refill_buffers \ --scramble_buffers=0 \ --buffer_compress_percentage=50 \ --buffer_compress_chunk=512 \ --size=2g \ --time_based \ --runtime=20 \ --randrepeat=0 \ --norandommap \ --random_generator=lfsr \ --numjobs=8 \ --group_reporting xenial's fio 2.2.10 reported an aggregate bandwidth of 3315 MB/s (for an SATA 3.1 SSD) due to the highly compressible data: # zfs get written, logicalused, compressratio tank/test NAME PROPERTY VALUESOURCE tank/test written2.03G- tank/test logicalused16.0G- tank/test compressratio 7.94x- Not all of the above fio parameters (in particular, --random_generator) are required in order to see the problem; this was the final command I wound up with trying to fix the non-random "random" data. I finally gave up and compiled fio 2.21 from source: https://github.com/axboe/fio/releases Running the exact same command on the same zfs dataset on the same hardware, fio 2.21 reports a believable aggregate bandwidth of 808 MiB/s (848 MB/s) and zfs reports compressratio 1.59x, in line with what I'd expect for data that is "50% random" as requested by the fio command. Using hexcurse to look at a file fio generated before starting the benchmark, the "random" file chunks now appear truly random; there is no longer any obvious pattern repeated among successive "random" chunks. So this fio bug has been fixed upstream somewhere between 2.2.11 - 2.21. Short changelogs are available from: http://brick.kernel.dk/snaps/ I was unable to determine when exactly the bug was fixed. But wanted to issue a public service announcement: DO NOT rely on Xenial's fio 2.2.10 to use truly random data. Until a more recent fio is available for Xenial, in repo or as PPA, I recommend compiling fio from source. The bug reported here is fixed in fio 2.21 (and probably some earlier versions). ** Affects: fio (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1703440 Title: xenial fio 2.2.10 randwrite: "random" data NOT random, highly compressible -> highly misleading output To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/fio/+bug/1703440/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1703466] [NEW] something continually steals focus, preventing interaction with any window
Public bug reported: Sometimes after unlocking the screensaver, Gnome is unusable because no window can be focused. Symptoms: * When a window is clicked, its decoration flashes to focused and then immediately changes back to unfocused. * The mouse cursor correctly changes when positioned over e.g. an input field, but no clicks get through to the application, nor do any keystrokes. * Global keyboard shortcuts like Meta and Ctrl+Alt+⇩ sporadically work a few times, but mostly have no effect. * The Gnome taskbar at the top of the screen accepts clicks and seems to work fine, but keyboard actions are also blocked. Killing all applications (which requires logging in via SSH) doesn't resolve the problem. The entire Gnome session must be killed, then it's fine the next time until the problem recurs. [Bug 1703479] [NEW] Ubuntu 17.04 & Kubuntu 17.04 LiveCD writes to bios/hardware clock; thereby messing up my installed Windows 10 Pro laptop time
Public bug reported: I created Live USB thumb drives of Ubuntu & Kubuntu 17.04 and when I went to try them out, all was fine because the clock displayed in Ubuntu & Kubuntu was correct. I had assumed that Ubuntu & Kubuntu OS would assume that it was forbidden to alter the bios/hardware clock because that would defeat the entire purpose of a Live environment. I had assumed that the two Linux OS would perform a check to see if the bios/hardware clock was set to UTC. If the bios/hardware clock was set to UTC then great. Still the Live OS should not touch the bios clock with out permission. The two Linux OS should via a dialog box ask the user if the clock can be changed via ntpdate or ntp and a warning that doing so will likely alter the time to an incorrect time in Windows. If the bios/hardware clock is found to be non-UTC then the two Linux OS should simply display that time and not use ntpdate or ntp. At this point if the user wishes to correct the time in the two Linux OS, The two Linux OS should warn the user that giving the two Linux OS permission to change the time will mess up Windows. In an Live environment the bios/hardware clock should never be written to, instead only read from and the time simply be an accurate reflection of the bios/hardware clock. Any writing to the bios/hardware clock should first be prompted by a permission dialog box and it should display a warning that altering the clock in Ubuntu & Kubuntu will most likely mess up the time in Windows. Upon shutdown of the Live session the Ubuntu & Kubuntu should offer to restore the bios/hardware clock to what it was when first booting the Live session. Inaccurate time in Windows has no doubt it's fair share of problems. Accurate time is important and accurate ticking is even more important. The bios/hardware clock should never be written to without user permission. User permission on Linux is granted by installing ntpdate or ntp and possibly the editing of config files. This can also be done during the install process where you choose your timezone and tick the option to update time via Internet. User permission on Windows is done during install time as well as post install fiddling with the time and date settings in Windows. Both Linux and Windows fail in warning user about changing bios/hardware clock. Please do not write to the bios/hardware clock without user permission and please display a warning that doing so may adversely affect other operating systems. I fully expect no surprises when I am done with the live session and I boot back into Windows. Maybe it's my fault, maybe I changed the clock in the Live session. But and But I was never warned that changing the time display in Ubuntu & Kubuntu was changing the bios/hardware clock and that my Windows OS was all screwed up time wise. This is my first Windows computer since I switched to Linux in 1996, so maybe I am simply uneducated in how time works in Windows. I use UTC on all my Linux machines. It's so much easier to use local time on Windows. I'm happy to help debug. ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: bios clock time windows -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1703479 Title: Ubuntu 17.04 & Kubuntu 17.04 LiveCD writes to bios/hardware clock; thereby messing up my installed Windows 10 Pro laptop time To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1703479/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

--- Comment From vipar...@in.ibm.com 2017-07-10 04:44 EDT--- $ git log 3d3efb68c19e539f -1 commit 3d3efb68c19e539f0535c93a5258c1299270215f Author: Paul MackerrasDate: Tue Jun 6 14:35:30 2017 +1000 KVM: PPC: Book3S HV: Ignore timebase offset on POWER9 DD1 POWER9 DD1 has an erratum where writing to the TBU40 register, which is used to apply an offset to the timebase, can cause the timebase to lose counts. This results in the timebase on some CPUs getting out of sync with other CPUs, which then results in misbehaviour of the timekeeping code. To work around the problem, we make KVM ignore the timebase offset for all guests on POWER9 DD1 machines. This means that live migration cannot be supported on POWER9 DD1 machines.
