[Bug 1729028] Re: gnome-shell crashes when monitor sleeps or is turned off

2018-11-09 Thread Zoltan Marcsek
Locking and sleeping is very buggy for me on a fresh 18.04. It rarely
works, other times gnome restarts, and I get in without a login prompt
(HUGE security issue), sometimes I can't log in after resume, or I can,
but my apps get closed (probably I get fully logged out). Gnome shell
also restart when I try to lock (with super+L), and the computer doesn't
get locked. Interestingly these bugs were not present on my previous
18.04 install on the very same laptop, and I didn't change a thing (same
installer, same programs The only difference is my SSD, but
I cannot find any errors on it).

[Bug 1802628] [NEW] winbind name resolution fails when remote host has multiple IPs

2018-11-09 Thread Brian Turek
Public bug reported:

Description:Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS
Release:18.04

winbind:
  Installed: 2:4.7.6+dfsg~ubuntu-0ubuntu2.2
  Candidate: 2:4.7.6+dfsg~ubuntu-0ubuntu2.2

This is essentially a confirmation of
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=825380

I had the combination of smb and autofs working in Ubuntu 16.04 and then
recently upgraded to 18.04. I hadn't checked my back-up logs that used
autofs+smb for a while but today noticed that autofs claimed that it
could not resolve my Win10 hostname (the remote backup endpoint). I
found the above Debian bug report and can confirm that the issue is
present in 18.04.

Steps to reproduce:
# ping abcomputer
ping: abcomputer : System error

# nmblookup abcomputer
192.168.1.8 abcomputer<00>
192.168.5.1 abcomputer<00>

Note the 192.168.5.1 IP is a Virtualbox host-only interface on the Win10
machine. I then remove the host-only interface from the Win10 computer

# nmblookup abcomputer
192.168.1.8 abcomputer<00>

# ping hyperion
PING abcomputer (192.168.1.8) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 192.168.1.8 (192.168.1.8): icmp_seq=1 ttl=128 time=0.533 ms

for 18.04 LTS. One key feature that the Ubuntu Desktop team supports with X and
wants to continue supporting with Wayland is remote desktop. Therefore, I think
this MIR is a blocker to enabling Wayland by default for 20.04 LTS.

This MIR depends on the pipewire MIR (LP: #1802533)

GNOME Remote Desktop

To enable GNOME's remote desktop feature in Ubuntu, you need:
- Build mutter with --enable-remote-desktop
This has been done in Debian but we need pipewire in Ubuntu main to enable on
Ubuntu

- Install gnome-remote-desktop (MIR bug not filed yet)

- I suggest uninstalling vino to make sure you will be using gnome-
remote-desktop

- Restart your computer

- Log in to the Ubuntu on Wayland session.
I believe it should work on X too but there is a misconfiguration in GNOME:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/issues/212

- Open the Settings app to the Sharing page. Turn on Sharing in the app's top
bar.
Click Screen Sharing and turn it on.

Only VNC is supported at this time.

- Use remmina (Ubuntu's default app) or another VNC client like Remmina
to connect from another computer.

Security

No known security issues

https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/source-package/gnome-remote-desktop
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-remote-desktop/+cve

I expect the Security Team will want to review this MIR.

Other Info

I think Debian Buster "10" GNOME will include GNOME Remote Desktop by default.
Fedora 29 will include it by default soon (it looks like an oversight that it
wasn't done before the 29 release).

Once this MIR is approved, we should be able to demote vino to universe.

[Bug 1802533] Re: [MIR] pipewire

2018-11-09 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

  Availability

Built for all supported architectures. In sync with Debian.

  Rationale
  =
GNOME switched to Wayland by default in the 3.22 release 2 years ago. Ubuntu
followed that lead and defaulted to Wayland with 17.10 but switched back to X
for 18.04 LTS. One key feature that the Ubuntu Desktop team supports with X and
wants to continue supporting with Wayland is remote desktop. Therefore, I think
this MIR is a blocker to enabling Wayland by default for 20.04 LTS.

pipewire is a new ambitious library and service for audio and video. It
aims to take PulseAudio to the next level and provide a similar
capability for video. One reason it was created was to help with
sandboxing for Flatpak and to handle Wayland applications. pipewire is
required for GNOME's remote desktop implementation for Wayland.

So at this point, we are interested in the video part for remote
desktop. The audio part is expected later. I don't think even Fedora is
  using the audio part yet.

  GNOME Remote Desktop

To enable GNOME's remote desktop feature in Ubuntu, you need:

[Bug 1405873] Re: -json output not valid when -class filter used

2018-11-09 Thread Vern Hart
I can confirm, this is still broken.

In my output, I'm missing the leading and trailing square bracket. Also,
between some stanzas there are close and open curly braces (on the same
line) without a comma in between.

Since those are the only two syntactical errors in the output I'm working with,
this simple one-liner works around it:

(echo "["; lshw -json -C network | sed 's/} .*{/}, {/'; echo "]") | jq .

[Bug 818544] Re: Brother MFC-240C FAX/Printer error

2018-11-09 Thread ethan john
The other most common reason for the printing error is the connection between
your computer and the printer. If you are sure that the transmission cable is
working okay, then the problem might be the drivers. This can be the printer
drivers or the USB port drivers.

[Bug 1802617] [NEW] After upgrade to 18.10 boot fails on waiting for encrypted source device

2018-11-09 Thread Donald Pellegrino
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from 18.04.1 LTS to 18.10, all reboots of the system
give a boot screen with the error:

"cryptsetup: Waiting for encrypted source device /swapfile..."

After a minute or so, the graphical boot screen with that message is
replaced with a console screen reading:

"ALERT! encrypted source device /swapfile does not exist, can't unlock
cryptswap1.
Check cryptopts=source= bootarg: cat /proc/cmdline
or missing modules, devices: cat /proc/modules; ls /dev

Dropping to a shell

BusyBox v1.27.2 (Ubuntu 1:1.27.2-2ubuntu4) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

(initramfs) _"

Typing exit at the initramfs prompt gets the boot to continue. The boot
continues to a working system and graphical login.

The system was configured in 18.04.1 LTS to have encrypted home
directories and no swap file.

It looks like the /etc/fstab got a new swapfile line somewhere during
the upgrade process. However, commenting that out and rebooting does not
affect this issue.

[Bug 1802622] [NEW] Ubuntu Cosmic nvidia-340 needs patch for "Bad or missing usercopy whitelist? Kernel memory exposure attempt detected from SLUB object 'nvidia_stack_t'

2018-11-09 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

Since upgrading from Ubuntu 18.04 Bionic to Ubuntu 18.10 Cosmic, I've
started seeing issues with getting into Xorg.

My config:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G92 [GeForce GTS 250]
(rev a2) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd G92 [GeForce GTS 250]

System Information
Manufacturer: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd.
Product Name: P55A-UD4

Ubuntu 18.04 Cosmic w/nvidia-340 proprietary drivers.

This appears to be, in part, due to a newer kernel with stricter
permissions around kernel access.

This seems to have been fixed in Debian:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=88
... by backporting the fix from nvidia-390:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1570493
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/attachment.cgi?id=1425704

Could this patch also be applied to nvidia-340 for Ubuntu?

Error I'm seeing on my own system (from dmesg):

[Bug 1482765] Re: [MIR] neutron-vpnaas

2018-11-09 Thread Seth Arnold
I reviewed neutron-vpnaas version 2:13.0.0-0ubuntu1 as checked into
cosmic. This shouldn't be considered a full security audit. I especially
did not audit the VPN configurations that it provides.

- No CVEs in our database
- neutron-vpnaas provides an interface for OpenStack administrators to
create VPNs using a variety of VPN tools
- *huge* list of build-depends. I'm not going to paste them all in here,
  it's really very surprising. There's 83 packages.
- Does not itself do networking
- Does not daemonize
- pre/post inst/rm scripts autogenerated
- No initscripts
- No systemd units
- No DBus services
- No setuid files
- python3-neutron-vpn-netns-wrapper and python2-neutron-vpn-netns-wrapper
  executables in /usr/bin
- No sudoers fragments
- No udev rules
- Extensive testsuite, unknown utility
- No cronjobs

- Subprocesses extensively spawned
- File operations are normally to well-known locations

neutron-vpnaas was previously in main. I don't recall it being a
maintenance burden in the past, so this audit is fairly truncated compared
to if this were a new package entirely.

It still drastically uses string-based command executions via ssh.

Whoever can use this interface should be considered to have full control
over the entire OpenStack environment. Upstream OpenStack security team
wasn't too worried about anything I reported last time around, so this is
probably also their threat model.

write_key_to_local_path() has a race condition in writing a key. Probably
OpenStack networking and compute nodes only ever have completely trusted
users interacting with the systems.

Security team ACK for promoting neutron-vpnaas to main with the provision
that the server team promises to help provide quality assurance in the
event updates are needed. We're not in a position to test all the VPNs
that this can configure.

Thanks

Since the bug this is a duplicate of is marked private, there is no way
for us to "look at the other bug report to see if there is any missing
information that you can provide, or to see if there is a workaround for
the bug".

I found a hint for a workaround here:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/927859/libreoffice-writer-crashes-on-start

That works for me, too.

Oh, and yes it does appear to be lower level than XFCE. I can repro with

[Bug 1768976] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 is overheating after upgrade from 16.04

2018-11-09 Thread gamer
I want to add an observation. I upgraded from 16.04 to 18.04 and the
first boot already was sluggish and the mouse pointer is slow. First I
suspected a baloo_file process to be the cause. It's not. I noticed the
fans of my thinkpad spin up. I saw no load on the cpu (as normal user).
Also the disk io is low. So what is causing this? Then the sensors still
show high temps and it got hot. I noticed also the gpu temp is hot. Then
i disabled wayland and rebooted. Still it is slow. Then i booted only
into recovery root shell and noticed only as root is a kworker/u16:0
process visible, which produces high load. So now I suspect some other
kernel level process is out of control, but I don't know what this
kworker process belongs to..

[Bug 1802578] [NEW] [drm:intel_display_resume [i915]] *ERROR* Restoring old state failed with -22

2018-11-09 Thread Alexander Karlstad
Public bug reported:

This error appears in my journal quite often after resuming laptop from
suspend and when un-docking the machine in the meantime.

When docked, I usually only enable two external displays. Un-docked I
only have the built-in display on the laptop. This was working
flawlessly in 18.04 but is extremely buggy now after having upgraded to
18.10 for some reason.

When this happens, my screen(s) remain pitch black. Switching to TTYs
and back does not help. CTRL+ALT+F1 gives me the GDM login, but when
entering password it seems it switches to TTY2 (or whatever is at
CTRL+ALT+F2), and the screen(s) remain black.

Logging in in a TTY and trying to "DISPLAY=:0.0 gnome-shell --replace"
does not help.

+P does not work (is this shortcut combination removed?).

At last when I ran "xrandr --auto" the session I had crashed and I had
to re-login, but at least this time I got my desktop.

[Bug 1774419] Re: easy_install command is missing

2018-11-09 Thread Cody Lee
Having `easy_install` available (or something similar) is likely an
ongoing need for at least one reason. If a user wants their system to
stay on the latest/upstream version of pip, one sensible way of doing
this is to install the `python-setuptools` package and use
`easy_install` to install `pip` straight from PyPi, and then from that
point forward use `pip install -U pip` to keep it up to date.

[Bug 1802589] [NEW] No image preview when adding a custom wallpaper

2018-11-09 Thread Khurshid Alam
Public bug reported:

How to reproduce,

1) Go to unity-control-center->appearance

2) Click on + icon, select a valid image

3) (Expected) GtkFileChooser dialog shows a small preview of the image,

4) (Actual) No, preview. Instead a icon (dialog-question) is shown.

This is same for user accounts panel when user tries to add a custom
avatar.

This reason is in https://bazaar.launchpad.net/~unity-control-center-
team/unity-control-center/trunk/view/head:/panels/appearance/cc-
appearance-panel.c#L1303

it uses g_file_info_get_content_type which returns an internal string
and hence mime_type is always NULL.

[Bug 1799994] Re: Xorg loads, no display on nvidia 390.77-0ubuntu0.18.04.1

2018-11-09 Thread Chris McDonough
For the record, I have a Lenovo P50 running Ubuntu MATE (which uses
lightdm), also in am Ultradock. It is running in "Discrete" (NVIDIA)
mode using nvidia-396 from the graphics-driver ppa, and had been working
well since at least -34.

When I upgraded to -38 (from -36), the system comes up to the greeter
screen in a low resolution, and though it works, when I log in, the low
resolution remains. When I boot to -36 again, same problem, but if I
boot to -34, strangely, it works. When I compare the xorg.log between a
"good" boot (in -34) and a "bad" boot (in -38), I can see that in the
"bad" boot, it's just not finding any nvidia drivers, while in the
"good" boot it is.

I've been booting to -34 as a workaround, but I suspect this is the same
problem as is described by the OP, and if there's anything I can do to
help, please let me know.

[Bug 1799498] Re: New Microsoft Azure Linux Agent

2018-11-09 Thread Norberto Arrieta
I looked at the test failures and they are caused by environmental
differences from our automation. Apart from the cgroup tests that you
already mentioned, a few test are issuing requests to an internal
endpoint, and some mocks need improving. Also, it looks like for some
reason some of the mock data is not being picked up correctly.

We run those tests on Ubuntu routinely so, if this is OK for you, we
could go ahead as is for this release.

How can I replicate your builder environment? I can work on fixing the
failing tests.

Thank you.

[Bug 1786822] Re: Pinta constantly crashes in Ubuntu 18.04 fresh install

2018-11-09 Thread Tom Hutchison
I can confirm this too, new install, constantly crashes trying to do any
simple tasks with an image. Doesn't seem to matter what the size of an
image is.

Big question, is this going to be fixed? We been including Pinta in our
imaged OS build for 2 1/2 years. It's simple, powerful and easy to
learn. Unfortunately, I just had to remove Pinta from out of our latest
OS image build and add in Inkscape.

2018-11-09 Thread spm2011
This is not a bug in the package. Unfortunately, the version of
smartmontools does not match the version number given in smartctl.

smartmontools 6.6 was released in 2017-11-05, after the date given by
smartctl 6.6 -
https://www.smartmontools.org/browser/tags/RELEASE_6_6/smartmontools/NEWS

@ahasenack The Ubuntu package could be updated to 6.6 however.

[Bug 1802584] [NEW] A good amount of pulseaudio modules can't be loaded

2018-11-09 Thread Hadrien Titeux
Public bug reported:

I'm running ubuntu 18.04, and I've verified that this is true on two
different installs (one fresh, one updated from 16.04).

I wanted to load three modules from pulseaudio (module-ladspa-sink,
module-loopback, module-null-sink), but it kept saying "Failure on
module initialization"

I listed the available modules with "pactl list modules" but none of the
three were listed.

They still seem to be there in /usr/lib/pulse-12.2/modules/ .

Am I forgetting something? Why can't I load them? Why are they not
listed?

Mirror Displays bug

After upgrading Xfce 4.10 to 4.12, "Mirror Displays" (xfce4-display-
settings --minimal) appears disabled.

The command "xrandr --output HDMI-0 --auto --same-as DVI-I-1" works as
before.

So, yes, it's a Xfce bug.

libxrandr 1.4.2

Hello,

I touched this problem too.
The reason is that 4.10 code checks just resolution of two displays and if it
match, it allows to mirror it.
New 4.12 code checks resolution and frequency of two or more displays. If all
parameters match, it allows to mirror it on all displays.
Therefor when one display supports e.g. 1920x1080 (0x27e) 138.650MHz and second
display supports 1920x1080 (0x2dc) 148.500MHz, 4.12 code do not allow to mirror
it even it is possible.

I see the idea that 4.12 code supports multiple (more than two) displays
active when old code supported only two displays (which is enough from
my point of view).

I can write a patch to allow 4.12 code to accept resolution match on
multiple screens. Is it welcomed or XFCE team will do so?

Workaround:
You can use xrandr from command line:

xrandr -q
=> check names of your outputs (I have LVDS-O and HDMI-0)

Make mirror:
xrandr --output LVDS-0 --auto --primary
xrandr --output HDMI-0 --auto
xrandr --output HDMI-0 --same-as LVDS-0

I think bug 11107 is somehow related to this issue that causes the
mirror option to be greyed out. If you read through the comments in that
bug report, xfsettingsd is not re-activating the display when it is
turned on again. When the display dialog is shown, it does not know
about the attached and/or reactivated monitor, thus it does not enable
the mirror option. Interestingly, it does know that a second display is
attached as it presents the options to extend or make the external
monitor primary. Searching the code, it appears that the check for the
clone option occurs in the xfce_randr_clonable_mode function
(http://git.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-settings/tree/dialogs/display-settings
/xfce-randr.c line #651).The check for extended occurs in
http://git.xfce.org/xfce/xfce4-settings/tree/dialogs/display-
settings/main.c (line 2947).

I applied the patch from comment #53 and now on connect of an external
monitor, the "mirror" option is no longer greyed out and is functional.

However, I'm noticing some unexpected behaviour as a result of this
patch as well. After applying this patch and attaching an external
monitor, my system automatically goes into clone (mirror) mode while the
display dialog is displayed (even though my preference and previous
state was extended). The dialog is functional and I can easily change it
back to extended.

I'm afraid the problem is deeper, see below.

When you attach new display, the mirror option is grey (in minimal
dialog and in standard dialog too, no patch #53 applied). Then you can
enable deactivated display in standard dialog, but it don't enable
mirror option in my case.

xfce_randr_clonable_mode checks for same mode on both displays (same
dimensions and refresh rate). My system uses same dimensions but
different refresh rates for two displays. Therefor in my case mirror
option stayed disabled. But I can imagine it might gets enabled for
others.

As consequence I made patch which check for correct dimensions only.
When it finds it, it enables mirror buttons (minimal and standard
dialog) and allows to select such mode.

Before I will post it there, I will check patch #53 from link too.

** Description changed:

- ## SRU JUSTIFICATION ##
- ## DRAFT ##
-
  [Impact]

sosreport 3.6 has been released in June 2018 with further enhancements
  in core sosreport functionality.

I already did the request for debian :
  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=900818

and 3.6 has been uploaded in Debian since then (Thanks to caribou):
  sosreport | 3.6-1 | testing
  sosreport | 3.6-1 | unstable

and I have synced sosreport (Debian->Ubuntu Disco).

Now, it would be great to have sosreport v3.6 SRU'd in supported stable
releases once official release upstream, considering the fact that the
release (especially LTSes) will contain a number of enhancements, new
features, and bug fixes and that sosreport is widely use by Canonical
support team to troubleshoot UA customer.

Just like we did for v3.5 (LP: #1734983)

  [Test Case]

   * Install sosreport
   * Run sosreport

  [Regression Potential]

   * Regression risk is low, as long as the core functionnality works
  (Package manager, ...)

   * autopkgtest reveal no regressions.

   * We did some dogfooding on sosreport, but we can't test each
individual plugins and scenarios one by one, that would be impossible.
Plugin bug is an eventuality, but they are usually easy to fix and the
impact will be isolated to the plugin itself or section of the plugin.
If a plugin has a bug the worst that could happen is that this
particular plugin won't collect system logs, debug information or
anything this plugin was instructed to do, usually won't affect other
plugin to perform as expected and/or sosreport to complete.

  [Original Description]

sosreport 3.6 has been released in June 2018 with further enhancements
  in core sosreport functionality.

A sync can be done since all Ubuntu patches has been integrated in 3.6

I already did the request for debian :
  https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=900818

and 3.6 has been uploaded in Debian since then (Thanks to caribou):

Just like we did for v3.5.

  [v3.6 Release notes]

The sos team is pleased to announce the release of sos-3.6. This is a
significant release containing a number of enhancements, new features,
  and bug fixes, including:

  29 new plugins:
alternatives, ansible, btrfs, buildah, clear_containers, date,
elastic, fibrechannel, host, kata_containers, lustre, memcached,
  mssql, networkmanager, nvme, omnipath_client, omnipath_manager,
  opendaylight, openstack_octavia, ovirt_provider_ovn, ovn_central,
ovn_host, rear, release, runc, skydive, unpackaged, watchdog, wireless

User and policy defined command line presets

The ability to save and recall specific combinations of command
  line parameters
Policy authors may define presets for specific situations, products
or other uses (e.g. "cantboot", "rhel", "openshift" etc.).
  Size limits for external commands

Certain commands produce large volumes of data, inflating report
size (e.g. journalctl): the command collection interface now allows
an arbitrary size limit to be applied, which includes memory used
during the run (reducing sosreport's peak memory usage).
Automatic file and command size limits

Plugins that do not specify an explicit size limit for files or
commands are now subject to the default value (specified with the
  --log-size command line option).
Plugin authors may override this behaviour if needed
  Concurrent plugin execution

Plugins are now run in parallel using a thread pool
Reduces runtime by up to 50% (workload dependent)
Command line --threads option to set the number of threads to
use, or to disable parallel execution
New profiles (including containers and the Apache webserver)

major enhancements to core features and existing plugins:

  better package manager version information
policy support for detecting package managed files
  fixed exit status propagation
