[Bug 1797386] Re: [SRU] OpenSSL 1.1.1 to 18.04 LTS

2019-05-08 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
@tim
As that is a regression already in cosmic, disco and eoan, it's best to track
fixing that up and track via a separate SRU bug #. Please see
https://bugs.launchpad.net/openssl/+bug/1828215 and subscribe to that bug and
use that one to track releasing updates for the issue you report.

Which applications are affected by this? Are any of them shipped in
Ubuntu?

Has this been performed with modemmanager 1.10.0-1~ubuntu18.04.2 please?

Also, there's a dep8 regression reported (https://people.canonical.com

2019-05-08 Thread Graham Inggs
Version 3.2.1 now FTBFS on unsupported architectures during configure,
so there is no point in trying to apply the Ubuntu delta.

e.g. (on arm64)

configure: ::--- no vector instruction set ---::
configure: HMMER3 requires SSE or VMX vector instructions.
configure: Supported platforms are x86 (Intel/AMD) and PowerPC.
configure: error: No supported vectorization found for your machine.

and (on ppc64el)

configure: ::--- no vector instruction set ---::
configure: HMMER3 Altivec/VMX only supports bigendian platforms: e.g.
ppc64 not ppc64le
configure: error: No supported vectorization found for your machine.

[Bug 1828035] Re: StrongSwan with GCM and large packet sizes produces unstable behavior

2019-05-08 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
Thanks Tobias for the advise, adding a kernel Task to pull in the kernel
team as well (confirmed to stop the bot from asking for logs).

@bugproxy:
"configure the encryption with aes128gcm8 for IPsec" can probably be done in
more than one way. To avoid wasting effort could you just provide the config
files you used on both ends
This is -not- overriding the question of xnox if it works in a newer strongswan.

@bugproxy:
As the kernel might be important (see the comment above), another check is to
verify if the same occurs with the HWE kernel "linux-generic-hwe-18.04"
currently at 4.18.0.18.68.
Furthermore you should try 5.1 from [1]
This is -not- overriding the question of xnox if it works in a newer strongswan
either.

[Bug 1782608] Re: Fresh Ubuntu 18.04 install uses wrong Realtek wired network driver.

2019-05-08 Thread Seth Forshee
This bug has nothing to do with linux-firmware, changing to affect
linux.

I don't know that I'd say the "wrong" driver is being selected here. It
sounds like there is an in-kernel driver that supports the NIC, but does
not seem to support it at full speed. So there is a kernel issue here,
but you're likely to make more headway reporting it to the upstream
driver maintainer. We can help you do that if you like.

Your complaint seems to be that you weren't offered the dkms driver by
default. I know there used to be a system that offered extra drivers
during installation. I assume it's still there, but I'm struggling to
remember what it was named, and I don't know what the procedure is for
updating it.

[Bug 1828221] [NEW] gtk_show_uri_on_window not supported

2019-05-08 Thread Pavel Rojtberg
Public bug reported:

while "gtk_show_uri" is supported since snapd 2.31, that call is now deprecated:
https://developer.gnome.org/gtk3/stable/gtk3-Filesystem-utilities.html#gtk-show-uri

However the new "gtk_show_uri_on_window" call is not handled by snapd
(at least feedreader does not work as a snap).

I would guess the "gtk_show_uri" codepath could catch that call as well.

[Bug 1828220] [NEW] apt-get --install-suggests applied recursively

2019-05-08 Thread whitis
Public bug reported:

In a blatent violation of the principal of least surprise, --install-
suggests installs packages that are in the suggested packages for
packages that are not listed on the command line. It installs suggested
packages for other packages deep in the dependency hierarchy.

Do not type this command except on an expendable (virtual) machine:
sudo apt-get --install-suggests install -y geda geda-utils geda-examples kicad
kicad-doc-en librecad oregano qelectrotech xcircuit gerbv pcb pcb-gtk
pcb-common pcb-rnd pcb2gcode visolate caneda fritzing

In this case, something installed clang which depends on clang-6.0. clang-6.0
very foolishly suggested gnustep which, since apt inappropriately applied
--installed-suggests many layers down the dependency tree, then installed the
entire gnustep suite of applications. Gnustep, after several more layers of
inappropriate suggestsions, caused roaraudio to be installed which caused
errors on every apt-get install command.

aptitude why roaraudio
i   clang  Depends  clang-6.0 (>= 6.0~)
i A clang-6.0 Suggests gnustep
i A gnustepSuggests mpdcon.app
i A mpdcon.app Suggests mpd
i A mpdDepends libroar2
i A libroar2 Suggests libmuroar0
i A libmuroar0 Suggests roaraudio | muroard

clang later gets installed explicitly, so I cant trace the specific path
back to the CAD packages that were installed but clang-6.0 and roaraudio
are first installed after the listed apt-get command above. Which
ultimately installs 2675 packages. Tracing forward with debtree
--with-suggests also doesn't make it clear why clang was installed but
debtree doesn't include dependencies of recommended packages.

The actual recommends of these packages listed on the apt-get command were
rather modest:
Recommends: geda-gsymcheck, geda-gattrib
Recommends: geda
Recommends: xsltproc
Recommends: gnucap
Recommends: qelectrotech-examples (= 1:0.5-2), qelectrotech-data (= 1:0.5-2),
qttranslations5-l10n
Recommends: extra-xdg-menus
Recommends: extra-xdg-menus

The following command suggests that a single package, geda, is sufficient to
reproduce the bug.
apt-rdepends --follow=Depends,PreDepends,Suggests,Recommends geda | fgrep -i
clang
It also shows that adding Suggests blows up the dependency tree from 664 lines
of dependency info to 49965 lines corresponding to 5865 unique packages vs 173.

clang traces back to i18nspector (through python), though it isn't clear
why that was needed. It may trace baqck to check-all-the-things and
from ther to devscripts but for some reason that isn't included in the
apt-rdepends output. debmake, gem2deb, git-buildpackage, javahelper,
duck, devscripts-el, svn-buildpackage, and mozzila-devscipts all depend
on devscripts. Like many dependencies that should not have been
followed, check-all-the-things was only a suggests.

i18nspector -> python3-rply -> python3-appdirs -> clang/clang-6.0

This debacle left me with about 6368 packages installed and about 20GB
of extra disk space wasted compared to running a fairly similar set of
many apt-get commands, without selectively including --install-
recommends on a few, on another machine. And ultimately, it appears
will be necessary to completely reinstall this computer from scratch to
undo the damage. In total, there were only about 50 packages included
in "Suggests" without recursion.

Not only does --install-suggests behave incorrectly but the man page
fails to document this destructive behavior.

This version number reminds me of https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-
ppa/mainline/v5.1/

This further seems to be under serious memory pressure seeing direct_compact
and slowpath, does that occur only under some conditions e.g. memory pressure
and some config. Or is it pretty reproducible.
If it is, does it reproduce on a stock Ubuntu kernel as well?

[Bug 1778322] Re: gvfs-smb-browse can't browse samba/smb tree

2019-05-08 Thread Andreas Hasenack
The "windows network" tab depends on an election to happen between the
smb servers, and a master browser being elected. It's the master browser
that is contacted for the list of machines in the network. If that
machine has smb1 disabled, for example, then this won't work, because it
will hit #1828107 (that's my understanding).

I suggest to focus on the test case presented in the bug description. If
there are still cases where it doesn't work, then it's a separate bug,
because disco has the same fix in place as we are applying here.

[Bug 1828228] [NEW] corosync fails to start in container (armhf) bump some limits

2019-05-08 Thread Dimitri John Ledkov
Public bug reported:

Currently pacemaker v2 fails to start in armhf containers (and by
extension corosync too).

I found that it is reproducible locally, and that I had to bump a few
limits to get it going.

Specifically I did:

1) bump memlock limits
2) bump rmem_max limits

= 1) Bump memlock limits =

I have no idea, which one of these finally worked, and/or is sufficient.
A bit of a whack-a-mole.

[Bug 1828227] [NEW] shiftfs: allow changing ro/rw for subvolumes

2019-05-08 Thread Christian Brauner
Public bug reported:

Unprivileged users can already toggle whether a subvolume will be ro or
rw. Not having this working with shiftfs regresses various use-cases.
Issues have already been seen by Stéphane Graber (Cced here).
To enable this with shiftfs we need to whitelist BTRFS_IOC_FS_INFO,
BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_GETFLAGS, BTRFS_IOC_SUBVOL_SETFLAGS.

[Bug 1828230] [NEW] FTBFS due to too new golang-goprotobuf-dev

2019-05-08 Thread Tiit Pikma
Public bug reported:

Disco updated golang-goprotobuf-dev to version 1.2.0-1. The protoc-gen-
go binary included with it generates grpc code that requires
google.golang.org/grpc version 1.8.0 or newer.

Disco and eoan contain golang-google-grpc-dev version 1.6.0-3. Since the
source includes code that is regenerated during building it fails to
build from source.

(This also means that any developers using golang-goprotobuf-dev and
golang-google-grpc-dev from disco or eoan are unable to build their
generated code, but fixing the FTBFS also fixes their problems.)

As a little background explanation, github.com/grpc/grpc-go introduced
two new API methods in 1.8.0: ClientConn.Invoke and
ClientConn.NewStream, deprecating grpc.Invoke and grpc.NewClientStream,
respectively: https://github.com/grpc/grpc-
go/commit/a5986a5c88227370a9c0a82e5277167229c034cd

github.com/golang/protobuf dropped use of the deprecated functions in
generated grpc code in favor of the new ones in 1.2.0:
https://github.com/golang/protobuf/commit/7c4add53b497798e7fd7b204f28e41ab409bdbb7

[Test Case]

golang-google-grpc-dev fails to build from source on disco and eoan. See
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/golang-google-
grpc/1.6.0-3ubuntu0.19.04.1/+build/16729837 (although that build
included a proposed patch, the same failure occurs without it).

An alternative, minimal test case:
1. sudo apt install golang-google-grpc-dev
2. Copy simple.proto from the bug attachments to an empty directory.
3. protoc simple.proto --go_out=plugins=grpc:.
4. GOPATH=/usr/share/gocode/ go build simple.pb.go

Expected output:
Nothing

Actual output:
# command-line-arguments
./simple.pb.go:86:13: c.cc.Invoke undefined (type *grpc.ClientConn has no field
or method Invoke)
./simple.pb.go:94:21: c.cc.NewStream undefined (type *grpc.ClientConn has no
field or method NewStream)

Without updating golang-google-grpc-dev to at least version 1.8.0, I can
see two possible workarounds.

The first is to apply a patch to golang-goprotobuf-dev that reverts
7c4add53b497798e7fd7b204f28e41ab409bdbb7.

The second is to patch golang-google-grpc-dev to include
ClientConn.Invoke and ClientConn.NewStream wrapper functions that call
the old API internally.

[Bug 1677415] Re: package linux-headers-4.4.0-70-generic 4.4.0-70.91 failed to install/upgrade: package is in a very bad inconsistent state; you should reinstall it before attempting configuration

folders for linux-headers-4.4.0-70-generic, linux-headers-4.4.0-70,

headers-4.4.0-146 and linux-headers-4.4.0-146-generic residing under usr
in folder src. How do I reconcile so I can upgrade to 18.04 LTS?

[Bug 1828215] Re: openssl ca -spkac output regressed

2019-05-08 Thread Tim Wegener
Here's a recipe for generating a CA directory for testing.
It assumes you have already generated a CA key and cert.

touch $CA_DIR/index.txt
echo '1000' > $CA_DIR/serial
echo '1000' > $CA_DIR/crlnumber
mkdir -m 700 $CA_DIR/newcerts
mkdir -m 700 $CA_DIR/private
mkdir $CA_DIR/certs

cp $CA_KEY $CA_DIR/private/ca_key.pem
chmod 600 $CA_DIR/private/ca_key.pem

cp $CA_CERT $CA_DIR/certs/ca_cert.pem

Those paths need to correspond to those set in the "[ CA_default ]"
section of the openssl.cnf file.

E.g.

[ ca ]
default_ca  = CA_default# The default ca section

[ CA_default ]
dir = somedir/ca_dir# Where everything is kept
certs = $dir/certs# Where the issued certs are kept
crl_dir = $dir/crl # Where the issued crl are kept
database= $dir/index.txt# database index file.
unique_subject = no# Set to 'no' to allow creation of
# several ctificates with same subject.
new_certs_dir   = $dir/newcerts # default place for new certs.

certificate = $dir/certs/ca_cert.pem
serial = $dir/serial # The current serial number
crlnumber = $dir/crlnumber# the current crl number
# must be commented out to leave a V1
CRL
crl = $dir/crl.pem  # The current CRL
private_key = $dir/private/ca_key.pem
RANDFILE= $dir/.rand# private random number file

The initial crl file can be generated like so:

cat ca_key_passphrase_file.txt | openssl ca -gencrl -out $CA_DIR/crl.pem
-config /path/to/test.openssl.cnf -passin stdin

Use 'openssl req' to generate the cert request private key.
Use 'openssl spkac' to generate the spkac cert request data.

[Bug 1828230] Re: FTBFS due to too new golang-goprotobuf-dev

2019-05-08 Thread Tiit Pikma
** Description changed:

- As a little background explanation, github.com/grpc/grpc-go introduced
+ As a little background explanation, google.golang.org/grpc introduced
two new API methods in 1.8.0: ClientConn.Invoke and
  ClientConn.NewStream, deprecating grpc.Invoke and grpc.NewClientStream,
  respectively: https://github.com/grpc/grpc-
  go/commit/a5986a5c88227370a9c0a82e5277167229c034cd

github.com/golang/protobuf dropped use of the deprecated functions in
generated grpc code in favor of the new ones in 1.2.0:

https://github.com/golang/protobuf/commit/7c4add53b497798e7fd7b204f28e41ab409bdbb7

  [Test Case]

golang-google-grpc-dev fails to build from source on disco and eoan. See
  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/golang-google-
  grpc/1.6.0-3ubuntu0.19.04.1/+build/16729837 (although that build
included a proposed patch, the same failure occurs without it).

  An alternative, minimal test case:
  1. sudo apt install golang-google-grpc-dev
  2. Copy simple.proto from the bug attachments to an empty directory.
  3. protoc simple.proto --go_out=plugins=grpc:.
  4. GOPATH=/usr/share/gocode/ go build simple.pb.go

  Expected output:
  Nothing

  Actual output:
  # command-line-arguments
  ./simple.pb.go:86:13: c.cc.Invoke undefined (type *grpc.ClientConn has no
field or method Invoke)
  ./simple.pb.go:94:21: c.cc.NewStream undefined (type *grpc.ClientConn has no
field or method NewStream)

Without updating golang-google-grpc-dev to at least version 1.8.0, I can
  see two possible workarounds.

The first is to apply a patch to golang-goprotobuf-dev that reverts
  7c4add53b497798e7fd7b204f28e41ab409bdbb7.

The second is to patch golang-google-grpc-dev to include
ClientConn.Invoke and ClientConn.NewStream wrapper functions that call
  the old API internally.

  Release: Ubuntu 19.04
  Release: Ubuntu 19.10 (development branch)
  Package: golang-google-grpc 1.6.0-3

[Bug 1828234] [NEW] linux-tools: perf incorrectly linking libbfd -- again

2019-05-08 Thread Andy Whitcroft
Public bug reported:

= SRU Justification =

Impact: Linking perf (part of the linux-tools package) against libbfd
prevents users to have linux-tools of different kernel versions
installed in parallel. Which makes debugging hard.

Fix: As stated above this had been fixed before but upstream changes of
the kernel between 4.19 and 5.0 voided those fixes. Unfortunately
without causing build failures but causing libbfd to be used again.

Testcase: Extracting ./usr/lib/linux-tools-*/perf from the generated
linux-tools package and inspecting it with ldd. Old builds will have a
reference to libbfd, the test builds will not.

Risk of regression: low as this is a build-time change.
=

It seems the previous attempt to disable use of libbfd has been rendered
ineffective by an upstream change:

  commit 14541b1e7e723859ff2c75c6fc10cdbbec6b8c34
  Author: Stanislav Fomichev
  Date: Thu Nov 15 16:32:01 2018 -0800

perf build: Don't unconditionally link the libbfd feature test to
-liberty and -lz

This leads us to have a hard dependency on libbfd at a specific minor
version. We do not need this library, we can use libiberty and others
for the same functions in perf.

This is a recurrance of Bug #1748922.

[Bug 1807439] Please test proposed package

2019-05-08 Thread Robie Basak
Hello Joy, or anyone else affected,

Accepted openvpn into xenial-proposed. The package will build now and be
available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openvpn/2.3.10-1ubuntu2.2 in a few
hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-xenial to verification-done-xenial. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-xenial. In either case, details of your
testing will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

[Bug 1807439] Re: openvpn crashes when run with fips openssl

2019-05-08 Thread Robie Basak
Accepted, thanks.

For the record, I think it's a little blurry as to whether this is a
bugfix or a new (FIPS-related) feature, but regardless I think it
clearly qualifies under the "For Long Term Support releases we sometimes
want to introduce new features" from a FIPS perspective. I think the
record here shows that "these changes are unintrusive, have a minimal
regression potential, and have been tested properly", subject to the
usual SRU verification.

On the SRU verification point, please make sure to test again that
everything works correctly with both FIPS and non-FIPS openssl, and
again report the testing matrix here, including the package versions
used.

Thanks!

[Bug 1828239] [NEW] Discover does updates without permission

2019-05-08 Thread James Funk
Public bug reported:

The icon indicating updates are available appears in the system tray. I
click on it, and then, on the pop up, I click on the button to see
updates.

Discover launches.

I look at the updates, and decide to run them later. Instead of clicking
the "Update" button, I close Discover.

The updates are downloaded and installed anyway.

This happened several times with a previous version of Ubuntu.

[Bug 1763608] Re: Netplan ignores Interfaces without IP Addresses

2019-05-08 Thread Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre
We're actively working on this. Fixing this bug had to wait for another
round of stable updates to complete while we correctly addressed the
problem and made sure it was fixed correctly.

The fix is already in the git tree for netplan.io:
https://github.com/CanonicalLtd/netplan/commit/d96a6a0f50c98301a36042f5065e7e834737122f

The previous SRU round is finished, so now we'll do another that will
include this fix in priority, to land in 18.04, 18.10, 19.04 and eoan.

This *does* take some time, SRUs need proper testing and a waiting
period in the -proposed component. Please help test the fix when it will
be available (another comment will follow saying so), this will greatly
help making it available at large as quickly as possible.

** Changed in: netplan.io (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Critical

** Changed in: netplan.io (Ubuntu)
Assignee: (unassigned) => Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre (cyphermox)

** Description changed:

+ [Impact]
+ Netplan users who need to bring up an interface (set its flag to IFF_UP) but
not define an address, using the networkd renderer, as the interface may be
further managed via another tool.
+
+ [Test case]
+ 1) Install Ubuntu
+ 2) Set up netplan; with the following different use cases:
+
+ == New VLAN ==
+
+ network:
+ version: 2
+ renderer: networkd
+ ethernets:
+ [... whatever is already configured for the system...]
+ vlans:
+ vlan100:
+ link:
+ id: 100
+
+ == Bring up an existing secondary interface ==
+
+ network:
+ version: 2
+ renderer: networkd
+ ethernets:
+ eth0: {}
+
+
+ 3) Verify that in both cases, the interface (ethernet or VLAN) is brought up
and shows UP, LOWER_UP flags in the output of 'ip link'.
+
+
+ [Regression potential]
+ As this brings a behavior change in netplan where as soon as an interface is
listed in the netplan YAML, it will be brought up, care should be taken with
existing configurations that do work, if specific devices are listed but are
not assigned an IP address, as they will be brought up by networkd. This is
expected to be a limited number of cases already, and impact to network
installations is minimal.
+
+
+
+
The "manual" method in /etc/network/interfaces resulted in an interface
being brought up, but not having an IP address assigned.

When configuring an Interface without an IP Address, netplan ignores the
interface instead of bringing it up.

  ---
  network:
- version: 2
- renderer: networkd
- ethernets:
- eth1: {}
+   version: 2
+   renderer: networkd
+   ethernets:
+ eth1: {}

Expected result from `netplan apply`: eth1 is brought up.
Actual result: eth1 is still down.

Similarly `netplan generate` does not generate any file in
  /run/systemd/network for eth1.
