It's not important whether dkms is in use or not. You can just assume
the worst case and install the four packages in comment #17.

[Bug 1860745] Re: package hyphen-en-ca 0.10 failed to install/upgrade: package is in a very bad inconsistent state; you should reinstall it before attempting configuration

2020-01-23 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

Bug reporting is about finding & fixing problems thus preventing future
users from hitting the same bug. You seem to need support more than have
issues with a bug

I believe a Support site may be more appropriate, eg.
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu (this bug report can be converted
to a question (which is aimed at support)). You can also find help with
your problem in the support forum of your local Ubuntu community
http://loco.ubuntu.com/ or asking at https://askubuntu.com or
https://ubuntuforums.org, or for more support options please look at
https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/community-support/709

[Bug 1860720] Re: Xorg freeze

2020-01-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report.

It would be easiest for us to identify the cause of this problem if we
had a clean log covering just the period of time when it happened. To do
that please:

1. Reboot the machine.

2. Reproduce the bug and do nothing else.

3. Immediately run these commands:

   dmesg > dmesg.txt
   journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

4. Attach the above two text files to this bug.

Hi

As an user, I would really like to be able to more easily make
application folders from the overview. My idea, would be to
automatically creating them by drag and drop, if the app is dropped on
top of another app, or add the dropped app to a folder if it is dropped
on it..

This could have some advantages:

1 - It would make it more easy for the user to sort his apps (for example, by
putting all his games in a folder)
2 - The user would be able to more easily find his app, especially if this app
don't provide keyword (it happen), and/or that he don't know the name anymore.

As I'm not a designer, I don't know how to make a draft, but if you have
question on my idea, feel free to ask.

This has been discussed several times before - the main issue is that
drag-and-drop is awkward with pagination (and in particular when taking
multiple monitors into account).

Perhaps a right-click action could work. You can right-click on a
application icon and select "Add to favorites"... is an "Add to folder"
option viable?

Mmh, I'd say it depends - if gnome-software gives us a way to leverage
the existing UI for that (like it does for the "Show Details" item),
this would be very viable. I wouldn't want to reimplement the exact same
UI in the shell (using a different toolkit and the constraint that we
cannot use actual windows ...)

Thanks for the bug report but ideally each bug should only describe a
single problem and you have described two. Please reproduce each problem
separately and log a new bug for each while it is happening so that we
can see the current state of the machine.

Re: [Bug 1860483] Re: [nouveau] screen background overlaid with scan type artifact in red

2020-01-23 Thread Paul Collinsworth
I thought that might be the case, and looked in a couple of the /var
subdirectories and didn't see dkms. I may run a more exhaustive search
before trying the new linux install. I'll be doing that within an hour
or so; had to be out most of the day on other business.

At the moment the system with the fault is backing up a bunch of work
files. I have another drive on the system and may install 18.04.3 if the
issue doesn't resolve with the new linux install (that alternate drive
is just sitting there with 16.04 and hasn't been in use).

Doesn't look like it - uname returned 4.16.0-74-generic #84-Ubuntu SMP.

May have overlaid the new generic by running APT upgrade. I'll try
re-installing.

I think that being able to put folders on the favorite bar could be a

Be doing so, a user that use a lot of different apps could make sure
that his favorites icon wouldn't shrink too much.

Adding an option to add non-favorites running apps in a dynamic folder,
that appear/disappear depending on the number of running apps, could
also help.

The overview (and the app launcher in particular) were discussed at the
UX hackfest in London last month. The design isn't quite final yet, but
there are some fixtures:

 - the app picker will contain a user-defined favorite area that allows
grouping in folder (including folder creation/management directly in
gnome-shell)

 - this will replace the existing dash altogether (that is, we will
remove the dash sidebar once those designs are implemented)

Those changes should address the main issues in this bug (more available
space for favorites, plus grouping in folders), and render the remaining
one obsolete (grouping of running apps in dash), so closing.

[Bug 1834290] Re: Incorrect physical size detected for LG 43UD79-B

2020-01-23 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Using the EDID data your monitor reports in the Xrandr.txt attachment above I
get the same answer
of 60x34cm so that is what the hardware is advertising itself as. Indeed that
would make it 27.15 inches diagonal.

So this is a bug IN your hardware, sorry. You might be able to get a
firmware update from LG. Most likely they are using the same firmware in
their 27" monitors and forgot to change the dimensions for your 43"
model.

[Bug 1860755] [NEW] [MIR] enchant-2

2020-01-23 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Public bug reported:

The enchant-2 package is a new version of enchant which is already in
main. The package has been renamed by the Debian maintainer to be make
co-installable with the previous version and ease transition.

Debian has started the enchant to enchant-2 migration now and we are
interested in doing that transition before the LTS so we are going to
promote enchant-2 now and will demote enchant to universe when we are
over the transition (before the end of the cycle)

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:70.0)
Gecko/20100101 Firefox/70.0

Steps to reproduce:

Set mail.tabs.drawInTitlebar to true (and it does not matter how one
does this).

Actual results:

Thunderbird will not open fully maximised; there is small gap between
the top of the screen and the top of the window.

Expected results:

When Thunderbird is set to open maximised - which it should do if (for
one thing?) it is maximised when it is closed - it should open (fully)
maximised.

Extra information is as follows.

I have experienced this bug constantly since the tabs-in-titlebar
feature arrived.

Theme - Thunderbird or OS - seems not to affect the problem.

I have a Hi-DPI system. Some details of my system are as follows.

OS: Linux Mint 19.2 Tina x86_64
Host: 20KHCTO1WW ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th
Resolution: 2560x1440 @ 60.01Hz
DE: Cinnamon 4.2.4
WM: Mutter (Muffin)
GPU: Intel UHD Graphics 620

I am surprised that no-one has reported this bug before. Perhaps they
have and the Bugzilla search function failed to find the relevant
report(s).

I attach a screenshot. The vertical gap at issue is small but noticeable
enough to irritate.

I also don't have the extensive customization the reporter has in the
screenshot.

I also don't have the resolution their monitor displays.

Maybe that is causing a problem?

The problem may be otherwise than I supposed. For, when I disable HiDPI
- I mean: OS global scaling to deal with HiDPI - Thunderbird opens
unmaximised (taking up about a quarter of the screen area), whether or
not it was maximised when shut. So the gap - the gap I see when HiDPI
scaling is on - may result not from an imperfectly maximised window, but
from a window that the program is not even trying to maximise.

. . But that problem - window not maximised at all upon open, when HiDPI
scaling is disabled - *only* happens when 'draw tabs in titlebar' is
enabled. So here we get closer to the root of the problem, I imagine.

SUMMARY
Tested on both X11 and Wayland sessions.

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. open system settings > application style > window decorations
2. select any Aurorae window decoration (I tested Breezemite and Mcmojave light
installed via "Get new window decorations" button)
3. click on "Apply" button

OBSERVED RESULT
Apparently the selected window decoration was applied, but kwin is still using
Breeze even after relogin.

EXPECTED RESULT
kwin uses the applied window decoration

HAVE_BREEZE_DECO is undefined for the KCM, so it doesn't save the entry

[kcms/kwindecoration] Fix saving of window decoration plugin

Summary:
In the KCFG autogenerated code we check for HAVE_BREEZE_DECO without
including the relevant file. This always fails, and so we save the
default plugin name/library as org.kde.kwin.aurorae

This doesn't match kwin's concept of the default and so we just fail to
load it.

Test Plan:
Reproduced
Saved a config

re-uploaded with the added error handling mentioned by @vorlon in

there an issue with this fix? Please let me know if I can provide

[Bug 1860640] Re: Add / Enable "32Bit UEFI Support" in Ubuntu?

2020-01-23 Thread lorn10
** Description changed:

  Hi there!

I want to add here a request regarding the addition of a very nice,
- currently Fedora-exclusive, feature. It's called "32Bit UEFI Support" an
- makes it possible to boot and install a 64bit Linux onto a 32 bit (U)EFI
- based system which contains a 64bit CPU.
+ currently Fedora-exclusive, feature. It's called "32Bit UEFI Support"
+ and makes it possible to boot and install a 64bit Linux onto a 32 bit
+ (U)EFI based system which contains a 64bit CPU.

  Source: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/32BitUefiSupport

So far I understand, this works through a special modified BOOTIA32.EFI
file. That one acts as some kind of a "wrapper" which converts some
(essential) EFI64 calls to EFI32 (during the boot-up).

I have tested this principle with latest Fedora 31 at an early Intel
iMac which contains a 64bit CPU but has a 32bit EFI. To my big surprise
  it works absolutely GREAT!

There exist currently some ways to apply this principle also at other
Linux Distros like Ubuntu and Debian. Unfortunately these are all quite
complex and needs a lot of modifications. More information can be found
  at the following link:

  https://medium.com/@realzedgoat/a-sorta-beginners-guide-to-installing-
  ubuntu-linux-on-32-bit-uefi-machines-d39b1d1961ec

I tried to modify a Kubuntu 18.04 LTS DVD ISO image but I failed. Fedora
Linux uses a quite different DVD install layout (folder & file
organization) which is not easy applicable at Ubuntu / Debian based
Distros. In detail I tried to copy the mentioned BOOTIA32.EFI wrapper
file into the /EFI/boot directory. Well, the edited / modified Kubuntu
DVD image was not recognized by the 32bit EFI firmware (at an iMac). I
have uploaded some of the needed files. Fedora seems to include also a
special macboot.img file which is not present (in that form) in Ubuntu.

  Kind regards

  C. Leu

http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

However, Ubuntu 19.04 (disco) reached end-of-life on January 23, 2020.

See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We appreciate that this bug may be old and you might not be interested
in discussing it any more. But if you are then please upgrade to the
latest Ubuntu version and re-test. If you then find the bug is still
present in the newer Ubuntu version, please add a comment here telling
us which new version it is in and change the bug status to Confirmed.

Oh actually, try booting with i915.enable_psr=0

It's possible the panel model has changed, and the platform was
certified with another model which didn't support panel self refresh.

[Bug 1852183]

2020-01-23 Thread Jna3427
Please note, I filed this but with a complaint about my system shutting down,
and also not auto-saving.
https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/show_bug.cgi?id=65509

As noted in that discussion, yesterday when I got the .bmp, LibreOffice
shut down quickly thereafter. It may be that the bug causing the .bmp
is also crashing the system.

Don't know where/if the auto-save fits in.

[Bug 1859730] Re: [comet lake] Gnome freezes, icons missing, graphics corruption

2020-01-23 Thread Alonso
Hi,
I do not remember what was the kernel that came with the machine, but if it was
a 4. etc, the current kernel I have is 5.4.0-12-generic # 15-Ubuntu SMP.
How can I edit the grub i915.enable_psr = 0 ?.
Are these steps that I found on the internet right?
sudo nano /etc/default/grub
edit line with
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT = "quiet splash i915.enable_psr = 0”
save
sudo update-grub
reboot
Those steps are done, I will comment if it has no effect.
Thank you!

[Bug 1860659] [NEW] 4.15.0-1053 contains fatal nilfs2 kernel bug

2020-01-23 Thread Paul R.
Public bug reported:

The Bionic 4.15.0-1053 kernel package contains this nilfs2 bug:
https://marc.info/?t=15741385112

and it specifically concerns this nilfs2 commit for 5.3 which was apparently
backported:
https://marc.info/?l=linux-nilfs=157423529924889=2

My RPi 2B boots fine from nilfs2 on kernel 4.15.0-1052, but kernel -1053
oopses consistently and reproducibly, with exactly the same
"nilfs_segctor_do_construct" pattern as in the above bug report.

Reverting to -1052 results in a working, bootable system again.

The -1053 changelog mentions:
"Bionic update: upstream stable patchset 2019-11-21 (LP: #1853519)"
which I suspect is the cause.

[Bug 1860643] Re: error:cannot copy data

2020-01-23 Thread Paul White
The following messages can be found in UbiquitySyslog.txt which has been
attached to this bug report:

Jan 23 09:41:19 ubuntu kernel: [ 178.001410] SQUASHFS error: zlib

It's possible you have a bad write to your media. If you're still having
problems please try the option to check the integrity of the image from
the installer boot menu, and if this confirms that the media is corrupt,
try rewriting it.
