[Bug 1886148] Re: failure to boot groovy daily

2020-09-17 Thread Chris Guiver
@Steve/vorlon

I've on rare occasion booted the L/X/K/ubuntu amd64 in a i386 box as a
quick test and expect a message like

"Kernel requires an x86-64 CPU .. i686 detected"

I booted the current Lubuntu groovy daily on
dell latitude d610 (pentium m, 1.5gb, intel i915)
and the grub menu appeared, but then it's just blinking cursor.

Do you care? or does this matter? want bug report or ignore?
(I suspect that would cause slower boots on amd64? and thus would be won't
fix..); also mentioned on #ubuntu-devel

IMHO cancel what is there, get it right in Groovy or later and then
SRU the correct thing.
The usual reason is this, right now nothing is in Focal, so you can
(under constraints) backport anything.
But if you have 7.8+fixes there first and then plan to update to 9.0
this update would have to follow SRU rules.
Which means you'd need to retain any behavior of the former version
making it much harder for you.

TL;DR: "Get it right first, SRU once afterwards" usually is the right
approach

[Bug 1895943] [NEW] zsys automatic snapshots just eat up all drive space and never get cleaned up

2020-09-17 Thread Tessa
Public bug reported:

the zsys automatic zfs snapshots use up an incredible amount of disk
space by snapshotting things they shouldn't on every package install
(like user's home directories). as well, there seems to be no cleanup
done whatsoever. a month or so after installing my new desktop, my 1TB
SSD was down to ~9% disk space free. I ran `zsysctl service gc -a`, and
nothing changed. I manually deleted all automatic snapshots, and I was
back to 453 GB free.

I'm not sure what the intention of this behaviour is, but it doesn't
seem configurable, and it seems absolutely broken on the face of it.
Certainly unusable for any normal system usage.

Please correct zsys to have configurable snapshot settings, and have gc
do... something. anything.

[Bug 1892306] Re: virsh snapshot-create-as fails when --disk-only is specified

2020-09-17 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1845506 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1845506

Hi Karl,
glad I could help with that.

The change is part of a bigger series that needs to drop a apparmor
reload, change the way AppArmorSetSecurityImageLabel is called and only
then finally can use the append functionality in this case.

The SRU [1] policy is rather strict on avoiding potential regressions for
existing users (or at least need to be tremendously outweighted by the gains in
rare cases) and this could have unwanted side effects. Furthermore the
willingness to risk that reduces for cases like this where
 a) you'd have the option to slightly change the use-case to get it working and
 b) there already is an active Ubuntu LTS released that fixes the issue

So I'm inclined to say no I won't backport it to Bionic unless there is
a stronger reason/need to do so.

[Bug 1895929] [NEW] [SRU] 2.47

Public bug reported:

This is a new version of snapd.

The changelog is available here
https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/blob/2.47/packaging/ubuntu-16.04/changelog,
the raw git changelog is available here:
https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/commits/2.47 (note that the debian
changelog is auto-generated from the merges of the git commits so there
is usually no need to look at the raw git commits).

The travis logs for 2.47 can be found here: https://travis-
ci.org/snapcore/snapd/branches

The snappy team released a new release that we want SRU into xenial. The
new process described in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SnapdUpdates was used
and we have done integration-tests on the snappy images, autopkgtests on
classic and unit tests.

2020-09-17 Thread Dehuan Xin
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1874578 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1874578

I can easily reproduce this issue when there is removable USB medium connected,
e.g. a phone or usb drive that causes a "mount" icon to show up on the dock.
Once I boot with USB medium connected, the dock will take a long time to launch.

[Bug 1895525] Re: [FreezeExpcetionRequest] wslu 2.3.6 to 3.2.1

2020-09-17 Thread Patrick Wu
Hi Steve,

I am a bit confused here. What do you mean by "What kind of testing is
this going to go through between now and release?"

If you mean how wslu is going to be tested with tests between now and release,
this can be only done locally on a WSL environment by running `make test`;
If you mean how wslu is going to be tested, it is being tested on the PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~callmepk/+archive/ubuntu/wslu-dev

[Bug 1690085]

2020-09-17 Thread ashesh.ambasta
I can confirm that in my case, all the suggested alternatives in this
thread didn't work (the ones that were applicable to my use-case anyway).

In the end, I threw my hands up and did an RMA. And that was over a
month ago. It seems to have solved the isssue. The processor I had
previously and its replacement were different batches; the former being
from 2019 and the latter from Feb. 2020. It seems to me that AMD ironed
out some issues with processors and I got lucky with the replacement. Or
it could just be some tiny variations in fabrication. I can never be sure.

But my machine has been up since the RMA without any crashes.

As you disassembled the processor, were you able to copy the serial
numbers from the old and new one, and could post them here please? Could
you pleas

[Bug 1690085]

2020-09-17 Thread ewerton.urias
Hello everyone.

I apologize for my English, I'll try to communicate.

I did a hardware upgrade in November 2019 (Intel for AMD), my current
hardware is this:

ASUS TUF B450-PRO GAMING
Ryzen 5 1600 Six-Core (BIOS always updated)
GeForce GTX 960 4 GB 128 Bits
Corsair 650w
Corsair LPX 16 GB 2666

During the first few weeks, I noticed reboots and freezes, and after a
few months of research, I found an alternative solution, which is just
to add "processor.max_cstate=1" to Grub.

After I did this, my computer went 6 months without rebooting and/or
freezing.

Yesterday I removed this parameter from Grub, to see what the result
would be, and it happened, I had a reboot and a freeze, it means that
"processor.max_cstate=1" is a solution for me.

The reason I'm here is to understand the root of the problem, to correct
it correctly, I'll soon test "Power Supply Idle Control" and "Global
C-State Control" in BIOS, but I have seen that for some users it didn't
work.

I'm trying to read all of your comments (there are many), but skipping
to the last comments, it seems that there is still no solution to this
problem, and this makes me very sad.

I don't know anything about hardware, could someone explain to me, in a
layman's way, the difference between using "processor.max_cstate=1",
"processor.max_cstate=5", "Power Supply Idle Control" and "Global
C-State Control"?

I thank you for your patience.

[Bug 1895669] Re: Add more support to Lenovo ThinkStation P620

2020-09-17 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Hello Kai-Heng, or anyone else affected,

Accepted alsa-ucm-conf into focal-proposed. The package will build now
and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-ucm-
conf/1.2.2-1ubuntu0.4 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed
repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been

Well, you'll maintain it somewhere atm - point there.

It will be imported once it is in main (or could be whitelisted now) -
then you could leave the current VCS entry.
The problem is that in any case we will miss all the history as it
never was in Debian to import from.
Gladly you know racb to talk about options from here.

Either way works, but I'm not aware of any differentiation beyond
architecture that you can use.
And since arm64/armhf can be so many different things I'd ask to get
something into e.g. postinst that detects if it runs on the right HW
and if it doesn't skips the rest.
That way the binaries are available for evaluation but have no function.
If there are other active bits/hooks, then yes you'd want to disable
them as well in that case.

We've had similar cases where a package makes no sense in a container context.
But making it fail gracefully avoided people getting stuck with broken
packages which can be a big problem especially for less experienced
users.

[Bug 1894619] Re: [2.82 regression] router announcements have 'forever' lifetime by default

2020-09-17 Thread Christian Ehrhardt 
The tests confirmed the issue that Iain reported and that the fix works.
Also no other issues popped up in the NM test using it.
autopkgtest [08:47:12]: summary
wpa-dhclient PASS
nm.pyPASS
killswitches-no-urfkill PASS
urfkill-integration PASS

And while https://bileto.ubuntu.com/excuses/4266/groovy.html looks
pretty bad after we skip the known badtests not much is left and of
those nothing seems to be due to this change.

I replied upstream hoping they will accept the change so we can then push it to
groovy (sooner or later we have to even without upstream saying "yes" but I'd
prefer to pick exactly what is committed).
=> http://lists.thekelleys.org.uk/pipermail/dnsmasq-discuss/2020q3/014387.html

Actually since this holds back other things, let us upload to groovy now
(it essentially reverts to old behavior) but come back in a week to
potentially update to whatever upstream did by then.

[Bug 1895925] Re: its error

2020-09-17 Thread Chris Guiver
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

This package failure looks like it was caused by bad ISO download,
corrupted install media, or device failure. eg. look in the logs and
you'll see messages like these :-

Sep 17 05:06:13 ubuntu kernel: [ 813.482022] SQUASHFS error: zlib
decompression failed, data probably corrupt
Sep 17 05:06:13 ubuntu kernel: [ 813.482033] SQUASHFS error:
squashfs_read_data failed to read block 0x1b38aae

Examining the information you have given us, this does not appear to be
a useful bug report so I am closing it, as it appears to be a bad ISO or
faulty device (inc. bad write-to-device). If you believe I'm in error,
please leave a comment explaining why and change the status back to
'New'. I suggest you verify your ISO download, and use the 'check disc
for defects' option to validate your media before install to ensure a
good download & write.

Possibly useful : https://tutorials.ubuntu.com/tutorial/tutorial-how-to-
verify-ubuntu#0 and
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/CDIntegrityCheck (where
CD refers to your install media, be it CD, DVD, HDD, SSD, thumb-drive
etc)

[Bug 1895941] [NEW] Screen lock after some minutes while playing vidoes from mpv player.

2020-09-17 Thread Suraj Poudel
Public bug reported:

I installed mpv player from APT repository.
It was working fine but from last week I have been experiencing this issue.
The issue is: Screen gets locked while watching video.

Normally, this should not have happened. But something has gone wrong.
Video continue to play in background but to watch it I need to unlock the
screen.

Something is triggering to lock the screen while playing any movies/videos,
which is very weird.
Let me know if you need more output to resolve this issue.

[Bug 1895935] [NEW] eGPU ssetup - internal laptop display not usable

2020-09-17 Thread Vlad Bejenaru
Public bug reported:

I have the following configuration:
- Xubuntu 20.04 updated to kernel 5.4.0-47
- Lenovo Thinkpad T480 with Intel i5-7300U and Intel HD Graphics 620
- eGPU via Thunderbolt 3: HP Omen Accelelerator + Nvidia GFX1070
- 2 external monitors connected to the eGPU: 1 DisplayPort + 1 DVI

Before the upgrade to kernel 5.4.0-47 I could use all 3 monitors (1
internal + 2 external).

Since the upgrade to kernel 5.4.0-47 the internal monitor is not usable
anymore. It is not displayed by xrandr --query and remains blank with a
small background luminescence

Expected to happen: to be able to use all 3 available monitors (2 external + 1
internal)
What happens: only the external monitors (the one connected directly to eGPU)
are available, the internal monitor remains black but with backlight.

[Bug 1895943] Re: zsys automatic snapshots just eat up all drive space and never get cleaned up

2020-09-17 Thread Didier Roche
Thanks for reporting this bug and help making ubuntu better.

ZSys is supposed to take user snapshots at the same time than system
snapshot. This is done on purpose, to ensure that a system revert will
always revert you to a coherent state. You can have application data
that changed format and upgraded your database. If we didn’t snapshot
USERDATA, then, reverting the system will end up in, for instance, older
thunderbird not being able to open the new database schema (it can’t
know about it), and so, your system snapshot will be useless.

There is no point in snapshotting only the system thus. I suggest that
you read this blog post which details that a little bit more:
https://didrocks.fr/2020/05/28/zfs-focus-on-ubuntu-20.04-lts-zsys-
general-principle-on-state-management/.

It seems though that you have a bunch of data generated/copied and then
removed on your machine (0.5T?). The GC is by default kicking out
everything that is more than one month old since 0.4.7, but if your
threshold is higher I understand that cn be a bottleneck.

The good news is that this is configurable and explained at
https://didrocks.fr/2020/06/04/zfs-focus-on-ubuntu-20.04-lts-zsys-state-collection/.
Note that the default policy changed as stated above so that until free-space
GC pressure is impemented, we mitigate extreme use cases like yours.
Another way is to consider using persistent datasets which will be excluded
from snapshots as explained in
https://didrocks.fr/2020/06/16/zfs-focus-on-ubuntu-20.04-lts-zsys-dataset-layout/

[Bug 1643706] Re: snap apps need to be able to browse outside of user $HOME dir. for Desktop installs

2020-09-17 Thread Oliver
I'll be the first to concede software issues aren't god-given (they're
developer-given ... or imposed); being a developer this is something I
basically preach to fellow developers. But a blanket statement of "it is
just bad software" seems a bit over the top. I think snaps do indeed
provide added value.

While I bemoan the fact that it's Canonical-driven, it _does_ add host-
guest-separation. Both in the security sense and in regards to libraries
within and without. It's just that this separation is working a little
too well for a lot of real-world scenarios, it seems.

To me the problem appears to be more along the lines of either adoption
going faster than anticipated [1] and so development resources becoming
a bottleneck, initial planning missing certain use cases (see above) or
issues that arose from the combination of the two.

So despite all criticism I uttered before (see above) I want to state
that _I_ do not consider snapd bad software!

[1] VLC would be a prime example of that. While obviously it could
benefit from the added security (decoding file formats has long been a
favorite target for exploits), the fact that I can't browse just
anywhere means that packaging it as a snap may just be picking the wrong
tool for the desired job. So works nice for Wekan, but for VLC not so
much ...

Public bug reported:

I suspect this is a pulseaudio or alsa bug.

Our test team reported this:
1. Prepare Padme-3 machine and Install Ubuntu_20.04 OS .
2. Boot system.
3. Play audio or video file.
4. Open Settings > Sound.
5. Hot attach headset.
6. Notice that headset is selected as output device in sound settings and sound
can be heard from headset => EXPECTED
7. While playback, select Internal Speaker as output device => KEYPOINT
9. Notice:SUT havo no sound from Internal Speakers => PROBLEM

I was able to confirm this - it seems with the headphones connected that
I can't select the system speakers. If I don't have headphones connected
I can switch between dock audio and system speakers correctly - so it's
just related to the audio jack

Thanks
Mark

It appears the release team has been subscribed to this bug on the basis
that it's requesting an excepton to the feature freeze. What is the

[Bug 1895422] Re: Sound card not detected on Dell Latitude 9510 (Realtek ALC711)

2020-09-17 Thread Harrison Chen
There seems be a patch on here:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tiwai/sound.git/commit/?h=for-linus=83629532ce45ef9df1f297b419b9ea112045685d

am understanding this correctly.

[Bug 1896102] [NEW] gnome-shell crashes together with emacs-gtk regularly

2020-09-17 Thread Nicolas Bock
Public bug reported:

Regularly emacs-gtk crashes (reported separately in LP: #1896100) and
with it gnome-shell crashes as well. Since those two crashes happen at
the same time I am assuming that those two events are related. I don't
know what the causal relation is though.

[Bug 1895922] Re: maas could not deploy a kvm-based vm via virsh

2020-09-17 Thread Patricia Domingues
Ryan, thanks. I tried adding curtin's daily PPA. I've added this to MAAS'
curtin_userdata
```
  add_repo: ["add-apt-repository", "-y", "ppa:curtin-dev/daily"]
  update: ["sh", "-c", "apt-get update"]
  install: ["sh", "-c", "apt install -y curtin"]
```

I can see on MAAS' logs latest curtin was installed:
```
After this operation, 866 kB of additional disk space will be used.
Get:1 http://ppa.launchpad.net/curtin-dev/daily/ubuntu bionic/main arm64
but still having the same error trying to deploy the guest:
