[Bug 1972007] Re: budgie-desktop issues after changing fractional scaling on 4K monitors

2022-05-15 Thread Mauro Gaspari
Quick update from my side.

I tested the changes thoroughly on my work laptop. I followed
instructions in test plan, and results are exactly as described there.

Excellent results on multiple external monitors, and no bugs to report.

[Bug 1922342] Re: Impish live session takes ages to boot on BIOS systems

2022-05-15 Thread Thomas Schmitt
Hi,

Chris Guiver wrote:
> The ISO wasn't cloned to thumb-drive; but written using
> `sudo -H dus-iso2usb kinetic-desktop-amd64.iso /dev/sdb msdos grub-2.0.4
> persistent`

Ahum. Congrats to sudodus then. :))

I read in
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/mkusb#Installation
"The main function of dus-iso2usb is to
   1. extract the first partitions and the grub structure from compressed
  image files
   2. create new partitions, one for an iso file labeled 'isodevice',
and one optional for persistence labeled 'writable' (or in older
  systems labeled 'casper-rw').
   3. copy iso file to 'isodevice' and add some tweaks.
   "

So this indicates that GRUB alone is not to blame for the slow booting.
Something in the ISO's partitioning or GRUB configuration is needed for
the problem.

What do you get reported about the USB stick partitions by fdisk -l ?

I wonder what is meant by "add some tweaks".

Have a nice day :)

Thomas

I think tweak 3 is most relevant in this case (of this bug report).

I have also noticed that it is difficult to 'make all computers happy
with the same configuration' even within the group that want an MSDOS
partition table.

The bug of this report seems to be somewhat worked around by the version
in dus-iso2usb version 22.0.1, but I think old HP computers with
core2duo processors want a bootable flag on the partition where grub is
located. However, adding that boot flag seems to stop booting in UEFI
mode. I am trying to make a configuration work for all these test cases

[Bug 1973440] [NEW] cheese preview image black/white and striped (no effect selected)

2022-05-15 Thread Henning Sprang
Public bug reported:

When starting cheese I see my picture, but it's without color and with stripes.
It looks like a "bad TV Filter" or something, but I made sure no effect is
selected at all.

In the secont test of the bug reporting process, which appears to show
the "original" camera image via gstreamer, the image is also wrong, but
in another way. it's completely dark, but looking more closely, it seems
to be the cam image, but extremely darkened so only a few of the most
white parts of the actual image visible.

Taking an actual shot with cheese seems to produce the actual image as
is without any of both of these problems, so it seems to be the preview
thats in error.

[Bug 1922342] Re: Impish live session takes ages to boot on BIOS systems

2022-05-15 Thread Thomas Schmitt
Hi,

sudodus wrote:
> The grub comes from a compressed tarball,

Well, then the hope to find a simple explanation from tweak 3 was an
illusion.

I am staring at the /boot/grub/grub.cfg of ubuntu-22.04-desktop-amd64.iso
and compare it with Chris Guiver's comment #90:
>...> "00:10 secs enter pressed at grub
>...> BLINKING CURSOR without change until
>...> 7:19 (7 mins 19 secs) first boot message

So i assume that /boot/grub/grub.cfg was executed. But then would last very
long to get from
linux /casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/ubuntu.seed maybe-ubiquity
quiet splash ---
initrd /casper/initrd
to a usable system.

Do i look at the wrong ISO ?
(I could not find Ubuntu "live" ISOs in the web.)

Have a nice day :)

[Bug 1970989]

2022-05-15 Thread Jérôme Bouat
I'm describing below an other test with the same physical host and virtual
guest.
I installed the xfce desktop environment (via tasksel) and I uninstalled all
lxqt packages. I disabled the snap user service start (from the xfce session
configuration panel).
Then, the cold start of the deb package application is down in less than 2
seconds (better). Maybe de xfce desktop environment already loaded a few
libraries (libgtk-3-0, ...).
In addition, I measured the used memory (free -k) by comparing the "used"
memory field before launch and a few seconds after the window appeared.
With deb package application : 266 MB.
With snap package application : 397 MB (+49%).
It seems the deb package application saves memory because it is sharing the
libraries with the other applications of the desktop.
Note that I didn't count the used memory by the snap machinery (in case you
wouldn't install snapd with a deb package application).

[Bug 1971168]

2022-05-15 Thread Al Savage
In the fresh VM, I just installed Chrome (google-chrome) from binaries,
and it too uses the troublesome file picker, and has the same issues
("sees" network shares files but does not read them; resizes poorly;
window enlarges by 244px both H & V every time it's invoked).

[Bug 1971168]

2022-05-15 Thread Al Savage
Created attachment 9276133
File pickers comparison 1

I've spun up a fresh 22.04 install in a VM, then run the snap version
of ff 100 (on the right) and ff 100 from linux binaries (on the left).
The file picker is different between the two versions; the binaries
version shows fewer network share aliases, and this binaries version can
successfully read and write to network shares.

The snap version's file picker shows aliases for network shares (and a
printer) and will navigate into those folders and show files, but when a
file is chosen to open, ff does not read the file and does not display
an error.

[Bug 1971168]

2022-05-15 Thread Al Savage
Created attachment 9276134
File pickers comparison 2

In "File pickers comparison 2", I show that the two file pickers (ff run
from linux binaries vs the snap package) sort files in a different
order, have different options at the bottom, and the bottom window
corners are either square or rounded.

The snap's file picker resizes poorly here, as well.

I ran the ff linux binaries version using the suggestion from
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1768500#c5

[Bug 1856294] Re: programs in "Installed (local or obsolete)"

2022-05-15 Thread DLCBurggraaff
Option "3rd party" certainly is applicable here. However I do not understand
the "deactivated from the sources" remark.
Option "proposed" sound rather convoluted to me. Probably the "loaded then
unloaded from the archive" is another occurence of the same underlying problem.
I have learnt to live with the symptom :))

2022-05-15 Thread Adolfo Jayme
Thank you for filing this bug. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug
because your description didn’t include enough information. You may find
it helpful to read “How to report bugs effectively”
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We’d be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:

1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Please also ensure that you include the operating system version that
you are using.

Thank you!

Where does the grub.cfg come from, in which you find "set isofile"
and "(hd0,3)" ?

I looked into /boot/grub/grub.cfg of ubuntu-22.04-desktop-amd64.iso and
of ubuntu-20.04.1-live-server-amd64.iso . Nothing to see of above search
texts.

Have a nice day :)

[Bug 1973469] [NEW] Lubuntu Kinetic installation crashes near the end on a system with a badly outdated clock

2022-05-15 Thread Aaron Rainbolt
Public bug reported:

Test hardware is on an HP Elitebook 8570p, 16 GB RAM, 120 GB SSD.

My Elitebook has a hardware problem that requires that I detach the CMOS
battery and leave it that way in order for the system to function.
Additionally, if I shut the system down, I have to leave it unplugged
and with the battery removed, otherwise it won't boot when I go to turn
it on next. (I think a thunderstorm fried a capacitor that had something
to do with the CMOS, but anyway, weird as it may sound, that's the
problem with my computer.)

As a result, when I power my Elitebook on, it thinks that it's some time
in the year 2000, which is about 22 years off.

In addition, my Elitebook uses a Broadcom wireless chip, meaning that I
have to connect to the Internet via Ethernet in order to install the
driver for it. Since getting an Ethernet connection in my house is not
so easy, I chose to simply perform the installation offline.

At the very end of the installation, the installation failed, and I
received the following error message:

External command finished with errors.

Command apt-get update finished with exit code 100.

The tar errors lead me to believe that this is a result of the out-of-
date clock on my system. Furthermore, after connecting to the Internet
to install the Broadcom drivers in the live environment and make the bug
report, my clock is up-to-date, and I was able to install the system
thereafter.

[Bug 1898383] Re: tcsh filename pattern matching fails

2022-05-15 Thread Michal Szymanski
Ubuntu Maintainers, please fix that nasty bug ASAP. It is a serious bug, easily
leading to, e.g. accidental, unwanted deleting of files.
For an unknown reason, Ubuntu keeps distributing this buggy tcsh 6.21 version
although it was fixed already in 6.22 released in November 2019. There is now
version 6.24.1 and Ubuntu 22.04 still ships with 6.21.

[Bug 1967843] Re: cheese display corrupted under Ubuntu 22.04

2022-05-15 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Performing verification for Jammy.

Starting with the broken 3.0.27-2build2 in -release, running

gst-launch-1.0 videotestsrc ! jpegenc ! jpegdec ! clutterautovideosink

shows a grey picture with vertical bars. Opening cheese, we see the same
vertical bars, poor video performance and purple lines.

I enabled -proposed and installed 3.0.27-2ubuntu1, and re-ran

gst-launch-1.0 videotestsrc ! jpegenc ! jpegdec ! clutterautovideosink

and had cheese running. Performance was great, nice and smooth, and
picture is correct.

Tested with my Logitech C720 webcam, and attached is a screenshot of
everything running with 3.0.27-2ubuntu1 from -proposed.

Happy to mark as verified for Jammy.

[Bug 1396511] [NEW] [4 new] Can't print Lingala in Ubuntu font

2022-05-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Currently it is not possible to print all of the Lingala alphabet in the
Ubuntu font. Lingala has over 10 million speakers, including over 5
million native speakers.

Based on info in bug 671503 and bug 670758, the missing characters are:
* U+0254 ɔ and its capital U+0186 Ɔ
* U+025B ɛ (its capital, U+0190 Ɛ, is already present)
* U+0301 ́ (combining acute accent).

[Bug 670758] [NEW] Expansion: IPA and Combining Diacritcals to cover more Latin-based African languages

2022-05-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Many characters used in African languages orthographies a currently missing
from the Ubuntu font family.
Some are actually present in uppercase, for example Ɛ U+0190 is present but ɛ
U+025B is missing.
Combining diacritics (U+0300, etc. and U+1DC4...1DC7) are also needed as many
African languages use them.

For the combining diacritics, OpenType GPOS features need to be added
for correct positioning.

Examples:
ɛ U+025B and ɔ U+0254 are used in the official alphabets of Benin, Burkina
Faso, Mali, Tchad, and Cameroon, as well as other alphabets.
U+300 is used in the Pan-Nigerian alphabet (in Yoruba ẹ́ is used), or in any
language using accented characters not in Unicode as precomposed form.

The ANLoc (African localisation) project has a list of characters uses in
orthographies of African languages :
http://anloc-fonts.git.sourceforge.net/git/gitweb.cgi?p=anloc-fonts/anloc-fonts;a=blob_plain;f=data/charlist.txt;hb=HEAD
and a list of accented characters (not available as precomposed characters,
i.e. using combining diacritics)

[Bug 1973156] Re: Strange graphical glitch during Ubuntu installation when clicking "Install Now" after inputting disk encryption details

2022-05-15 Thread Aaron Rainbolt
I'm attaching two videos. One is the full installation procedure
(including making the VM and logging into the new install), the other is
a snippet out of the first video containing just the part of the
installation that glitches out. I'm using the newest ISO from the QA
tracker.

Launchpad doesn't seem to be accepting my full install video (it's 16.2
MB, maybe it's too big?), so I uploaded the videos to YouTube. Full

[Bug 1901360] [NEW] Support for precomposed latin letters for Sanskrit transliteration

2022-05-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Latin letters with dot below are used to transliterate Sanskrit. In
such transliterated texts it's the precomposed forms that are usually
used, not "combining dot below". It would be very nice if Ubuntu fonts
supported these letters. There is a lot of existing material that uses
them.

Attached screenshot shows an XML-tagged mahāvyutpatti dictionary opened
in emacs. The default font is Ubuntu Mono, but you can see how emacs
has to use substitutions for the characters "with dot below".

[Bug 868686] [NEW] [nc] Ubuntu Mono: Italic characters are cut off on gVim on Windows XP

2022-05-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Using gVim on Win XP, italic characters are cut on the right when they
are highlighted.

In attached screenshot, gVim highlights all characters in the same
column. When moving from left to right, all italic characters in another
line are cut off. After being highlighted the characters stays with
missing pixels until you switch windows.

Tested with other fonts and couldn't reproduce with Consolas, Deja Vu
Mono, Droid Sans Mono. This happens even when Cleartype is off.

I couldn't trigger this bug in others text editors so these are the
steps to reproduce in gVim. You can download it at
http://www.vim.org/download.php#pc

Included themes does not use italic characters by default so you should
install solarized for gvim from https://github.com/altercation/vim-
colors-solarized to make this easier to trigger

Once you have installed the app and the theme and installed Ubuntu Mono
in the system, open up gVim and begin typing:

:set guifont=Ubuntu_Mono:h13
:colorscheme solarized
:set cursorcolumn

Press i to enter insert mode and type in the file:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet

Now you can use the toolbar or menu to save the file. Save it with a
.html extension.

Press Esc to leave insert mode. Now click at the beggining of the second line.
Start pressing l (lowercase L) to start moving to the right.
Now you should notice that the characters in the first line are cut off on its
right side.

Also notice that this does not happen when moving from right to left.

[Bug 1973464] [NEW] Firefox does not supply name when it asks to open default keyring in Lubuntu 20.04

2022-05-15 Thread sem
Public bug reported:

When using auto-login in Lubuntu 20.04 LTS, browsing firefox causes
firefox to send a request to the default keyring to unlock.

The problem is, it doesn't provide any information about what
application is making the request. This can be disorienting to the user,
especially since the security prompt locks out the system until you
enter the password or press cancel, with no hints about why you're
getting the message.

Image: application asking to unlock default keyring.
https://i.ibb.co/4K36pqT/48cce3e1-abfc-4b12-9561-acb2a78da7bd.jpg

I have verified that it is firefox, by removing ~/.local/share/keyrings
directory, and restarting the system. When firefox is opened again, you
get a new message asking you to create a new password for the default
keyring.

Image: Opening firefox prompts the creation of a new password for the default
keyring.
https://i.ibb.co/RpSJ8L6/4fda479e-4603-4330-80cf-e2bc20643a61.jpg

I am not sure what program is handling the default keyring on lubuntu.
Would it be possible for firefox to supply its name when interacting

[Bug 656690] [NEW] [136 new] Expansion: (ả, ẻ, ủ, ẽ, ớ, ờ) for Vietnamese in Latin Extended Additional

The Vietnamese alphabet is nearly like the Latin alphabet, but Vietnamese has
tone mark such as grave accent (à ,è, ù,...), accute accent (á, é, ú,...),
falling accent (ả, ẻ, ủ,...), rising accent (ã, ẽ, ũ,..), drop tone (ạ, ẹ,
ụ,...), and some differently special letters like ă, â, ơ, ư,... These letters
are not displayed correctly now, esspecially the special letters with tone
mark. If the font size is chosen smaller than 8 pt, these letters still remain
big while the other Latin-only letters are small. In the other hand, the more
it's bigger, the more the special letters with tone mark are incorrectly
displayed.

Unicode separates the characters into blocks, (covering Cyrillic,
covering Devanagari and splitting Latin up into the Basics, Supplements,
Latin Extended A, Latin Extended, B Extended, C ..., D..., and Extended
Additional. These are the same cake splices that are being used to split
up work on the Ubuntu Font Family. 'ẞ' lives in the Latin Extended
Additional block, and at the moment work is focusing on Arabic and
Hebrew (fonts take a _long_ time to develop and it's not possible to do
everything at once at the beginning, so the build-out will be gradual).

On 29 June 2017, ẞ became an official part of the German alphabet.

Please could you get anyone who needs this glyph to click the "Affects
me" button at the top, as this will help to gauge what priority to focus
on for each block/script/language to do next.

[Bug 1973463] Re: ZFS kernel null pointer dereference

2022-05-15 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a
specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu
in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source
packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs
about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your
bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage.
You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on
Libera.chat.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1973463/+editstatus and add the
package name in the text box next to the word Package.

[This is an automated message. I apologize if it reached you
inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

[Bug 1973467] [NEW] Screen Blank: External screen is not turned off

2022-05-15 Thread Zingam
Public bug reported:

In Power -> Power Saving Options -> Screen Blank - the option states
that the screen will be turned off after some period, which is what I'd
expect from a sleep mode.

I have a hybrid system. I have disabled the internal display and I use
the external connected via HDMI (and I believe it is connected to the
NVIDIA GPU). When the screen goes blank the external monitor is not
turned off really. It goes blank but it is still turned on and glows, so
no power is saved.

[Bug 1319543] [NEW] [11 new] Glyphs Used by Byobu Missing in Ubuntu Mono

2022-05-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Ubuntu comes preinstalled with Byobu, which uses several glyphs in the
status notification section at the bottom of the terminal window;
however, these glyphs are not present in the Ubuntu Mono Typeface, so
they are displayed as squares.

Here is a list of the missing glyphs:
⟫ (Double Right Chevron)
▴ (Black Up Triangle/Arrow)
▾ (Black Down Triangle/Arrow)
◂ (Black Left Triangle/Arrow)
▸ (Black Right Triangle/Arrow)
℃ (Degrees Celsius)
℉ (Degrees Fahrenheit)
⍌ (Mail Envelope)
♸ (Recycle Symbol with 6)
⟳ (Circular Arrow Clockwise)
‼ (Double Bang/Exclamation)

Fixing this bug would also fix bug 736613 and bug 868713.

open Firefox at the very end of the process. Sadly, I closed the
terminal window that contained the initial error, but I was able to
easily reproduce it reporting this bug. The full console output of

I am unsure if this problem is in Apport or Lubuntu. ubuntu-bug works
just fine for me on Ubuntu Kinetic, but not on Lubuntu. I suspect this
is due to the Snap version of Firefox, but I don't know for sure. Since
ubuntu-bug is what gave me the error, I'm filing this against Apport.

[Bug 1168656] [NEW] Serbian optional glyph for italic SHA

2022-05-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Hello there,

The Ubuntu font family should include an optional italic glyph for
letter SHA, to be activated by the alt locl OpenType function (at least
I think that's the way it's called, I don't know much about it).

The glyph in question can be found in the attached image: it's the last
one on the right.

** Affects: fonts-ubuntu (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 1973357] Re: Kernel update to 4.15.0-177 fails to load some kernel modules

2022-05-15 Thread Dan
I just experienced the same problem today on my Asus G752VT Republic of
Gaming laptop. I ended up having to force a power-off by holding down
the power button for five seconds because it was stuck trying to booting
up. It also wouldn't properly reboot with ALT+CTRL+DEL, getting stuck
doing that as well. Once I powered it back on again, I could regain
control once I had GRUB boot into the previous kernel again
(4.15.0-176). I was able to repeat the same problem by letting it boot
into the newer kernel (4.15.0-177) and had to repeat the same steps to
regain control again.

[Bug 1973386] Re: 22.04 Jammy: Lockscreen (but not login) on-screen keyboard touch keys do not work

2022-05-15 Thread Eugene Hartke Debs
Same problem with Surface 1 after upgrading from 20 to 22. The Screen
Keyboard mostly works unless the physical keyboard is attached. When I'm
typing in passwords for pop-up windows i.e. Wi-Fi password it never
works. It just displays the keyboard but doesn't register any inputs.
Other times it just seems to not work at random, meaning not showing the
Keyboard or not registering inputs. I am running the Surface Linux
Kernel. Also it seems to be more stable with x11 than Wayland.

[Bug 1973468] [NEW] New Windows from favorites often not working

2022-05-15 Thread Jan Wielemaker
Public bug reported:

Running Ubuntu 22.04 jammy, firefox 100 from snap.

First time launch from the left launcher (favorites) normally works
fine. Open a second window using the context menu "New Window" or "Open
a New Windows" (what is the difference?) often just gives the rotating
Ubuntu cursor and no Firefox window is opened. Sometimes works though,
so you have to try a few times.

^N in an open firefox window work fine.
