[Bug 2058094] [NEW] scotch ftbfs when using default stack protector flags

2024-03-16 Thread Steve Langasek
Public bug reported:

scotch ftbfs in Ubuntu (but not in Debian) with a buffer overflow error
in the testsuite.

./test_scotch_graph_map data/m4x4_b10.grf
*** buffer overflow detected ***: terminated

I have examined the source and run the code under gdb and cannot confirm
that there is a buffer overflow here.

The code triggering the assertion is in
src/libscotch/bgraph_bipart_gg.c:

  flagtax = (byte *) (vexxtax + grafptr->s.baseval) - grafptr->s.baseval; /* Re-
use extended vertex array for flag array */
  memSet (flagtax + grafptr->s.baseval, ~0, grafptr->s.vertnbr * sizeof (byte));

There's a lot in this code that's ugly (a lot of deliberate setting of
pointers to addresses that are outside of allocated space), but as best
I'm able to tell this is not an out-of-bounds write. However, with the
terrible pointer manipulation it's quite likely that this has confused
the compiler.

The only way I've found to work around this (without taking a scalpel to
the scotch code) is by downgrading to -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=2.

This is less than ideal, so I'm opening a bug on scotch+gcc to track it.

[Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

2024-03-16 Thread John Johansen
supercollider will work on current noble. Since it is using QTWebEngine
it has a graceful fallback when capabilities within the user namespace
are denied.

supercollider will have a profile and be fixed in Beta3, so it doesn't
even have to do the fallback.

[Bug 2058102] [NEW] Live caption of videos doesnt work in chromium, but in chrome works

2024-03-16 Thread Eduardo Gutierrez
Public bug reported:

For example:

you get enabled live caption and it does nothing. The same page with
chrome, works the live caption of the video ok.

Description:Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS

Expected that when playing the video, it would begin the live caption and
generate subtitles...at least in english, would be also nice to enable
subtitles translation to spanish.

The video plays "as usual, normally" without live captions in any
langauage.

I have tried freecad and unprivileged user namespace restrictions are
not the problem. freecad snap works, freecad ppa does not have a noble

[Bug 2058032] Re: 3.8.1-ubuntu1 depends on update-notifier-common, which ends up bringing in ubuntu-pro

2024-03-16 Thread Pjotr12345
Workaround:

1. Get it straight from Debian:
wget
http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/pool/contrib/m/msttcorefonts/ttf-mscorefonts-installer_3.8.1_all.deb
 -P ~/Downloads

2. Install it without recommends:
sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends
~/Downloads/ttf-mscorefonts-installer_3.8.1_all.deb

3. Copy the fonts to another folder:
sudo cp -v -r /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts2

4. Uninstall the Debian installer (plus the fonts in their original folder):
sudo apt-get purge ttf-mscorefonts-installer

5. Notify the system:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig

6. Done.

Ack.

Currently I'm in favor of documenting, also because I know that there
are packages out there that rely on this. It does means that yes, the
order of the stanza matter.

Heh, well perhaps I can suggest a compromise ...

I'm also in favour of documenting *currently*, on the basis that it'd
be a pretty fundamental change in behaviour and thus likely to cause
breakage. However, I'm pretty strongly of the opinion that a key
assumption that a test should be able to make, is that it is running
on a "clean" test-bed. If a test *cannot* make that assumption, then
there's a whole lotta hoops it needs to jump through before it can do
anything useful, and that doesn't sound like a good system to me. I'll
try and demonstrate below that this is how things currently stand, but
first I had a quick dive through the docs to see what one can expect
from the specification...

The current autopkgtest spec. [1] doesn't say much (or anything?)
about the state of the test-bed at the start of each test. That's
presumably because having a clean test-bed is such a fundamental
assumption that it wasn't considered worth specifying, explicitly, but
perhaps it should be.

The autopkgtest man-page [2] doesn't say anything on the subject
either (that I can find?). The autopkgtest README.running-tests [3]
*does*, but only to warn about the "null" virtualization leaving
clutter on your system, and "chroot" providing no cleanup or revert.

Interestingly, nothing seems to draw a distinction between tests
specified in the same stanza, and tests in separate stanzas. I could
see a reasonable case being made that tests in the same stanza (hence
sharing Depends and Restrictions), could assume a specific running
order, and that the test-bed will *not* be reset between them. In
other words that the following would mean "foo" runs strictly before
"bar", and "bar" will see the changes that "foo" made to the test-bed:

Tests: foo, bar
Depends: pkg1, pkg2
Restrictions: needs-root, isolation-machine

Whilst the following would imply nothing about the running order, and
both "foo" and "bar" could assume clean test-beds:

Tests: foo
Depends: pkg1, pkg2
Restrictions: needs-root, isolation-machine

Tests: bar
Depends: pkg1, pkg2
Restrictions: needs-root, isolation-machine

I mention "no assumptions about the running order" because
README.running-tests [3] talks about parallel test runs (under the
QEMU section), in which case there would be no deterministic means of
understanding which test would run on the test-bed prior to another
(assuming any reuse of test-beds in such a scenario).

Still, as things stand at the moment, why can no test be certain of
having a clean test-bed? Consider the separate stanzas case of "foo"
and "bar" above. If a developer wishes to add a new test, "baz", and
they want to be sure of having a clean test-bed they have to insert
the test at the *start* of the d/t/control file:

Tests: baz
Depends: pkg1, pkg2
Restrictions: needs-root, isolation-machine

Tests: foo
Depends: pkg1, pkg2
Restrictions: needs-root, isolation-machine

Tests: bar
Depends: pkg1, pkg2
Restrictions: needs-root, isolation-machine

But, having done so, they may now break the "foo" test if its
dependencies are a superset of the new test's, and "baz" affects the
test-bed in a way that interacts with the "foo" test. In order to
guarantee that "baz" doesn't affect "foo", we could add a redundant
dependency (making baz's dependencies a superset of foo's), but then
we have to consider if that pointless dependency will affect the "baz"
test. Or alternatively we put the "baz" test at the bottom, but now we
have to consider whether any prior test (with a subset of
dependencies) can affect the test-bed in a way that breaks our new
test. Argh!

Ideally, a developer should be able to define a new test in
d/t/control without having to trawl through existing tests to
determine if they're going to break anything.

[Bug 2054887] Re: Grahpical bugs caused by unable to access libdrm

2024-03-16 Thread John
I am starting to wonder if it is a bug not present in Chromium but in
snap itself. I decided to try Firefox and the issue is present there
too. And also disabling hardware acceleration on Firefox fixes the issue
as a work around just like in Chromium.

[Bug 2054887] Re: Grahpical bugs caused by unable to access libdrm

2024-03-16 Thread John
Okay so doing the remove and then install made the amdgpu error go away,
but now the issue is still present with the below errors

chromium-browser
Gtk-Message: 11:22:24.966: Failed to load module "xapp-gtk3-module"

The following command says that "chromium is already installed
snap install --channel beta/internal-libdrm chromium
snap "chromium" is already installed, see 'snap help refresh'

I'm not sure what is going on but disabling hardware acceleration seems
to be a good workaround for now.

[Bug 2058118] [NEW] CPU usage too high. System either stops for a minute or greatly lags

2024-03-16 Thread Ken Wagner
Public bug reported:

CPU usage for gnome-shell skyrockets 25% to over 125%. System stops for
a minute or longer. Other times everything lags and stutters.

1. Does not matter if I use X.org or Nvidia (470 tested release for my GT720
card with two monitors).
2. Turning Gnome Extensions on and off doesn't help.
3. Using Ubuntu 23.10.Updated regularly.
4. This issue started about 7 months ago.

I expect the halts and stutters to go away. Nothing has helped so far.
I mostly use Firefox 123.0.1, logseq 0.10.7, US Gov weather, Nautilus,
LibreOffice Writer, Thunderbird Email, gedit and text editor (gnome) and VS
Code + Rust 1.76. Doesn't matter on using or not using any of these apps. I
usually have 4-5 workspaces over my two monitors.

Kindly advise. Glad to help if I can. What else would you like to know?

Thanks,

Ken Wagner

[Bug 1905422] Re: CoinMP Solver not Available, option requires coinmp to be promoted

2024-03-16 Thread Rafael Lima
So I've been using LO from the fresh PPA
(https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa) and it does not
come with CoinMP enabled.

Is there any particular package that I need to install to make CoinMP
work with LibreOffice on Ubuntu?

Or is this a bug and we should reopen the ticket?

[Bug 2038645] Re: Ubuntu Mate 22.04 scaling problem

2024-03-16 Thread tele1234567891
After the latest driver update, the system was unable to load Nvidia drivers.
Driver Manager was unable to install / load other drivers.
( /usr/bin/software-properties-gtk --open-tab=4 )
Something ... " libhvloc-plugins: requires libxnvctrl0 " ...
I used

apt-get purge *nvidia*
apt --fix-broken install
apt autoremove
apt install nvidia-driver-545

and that solved my problem with manager for drivers.
Thank you for supporting VESA.
During the repair, I used both the Noveau and VESA drivers.

At the moment:

1. I still can't save resolution in nvidia-settings
" Unable to open X config file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf' for writing "

2. changing from 1920x1080 to 4K now working

3. About Steam icon I'll try reporting to Steam on github

4. There are two problems with scaling.
4.1 The image is smaller, but without the menu bar.
- Let's assume it's a driver or monitor problem.
4.2 Some TVs can scale the image automatically, but my monitor doesn't.

Enjoy your work,
Good luck.

[Bug 2029480] Re: SyntaxWarnings with Python3.12

2024-03-16 Thread Till Kamppeter
This is the patch adapted to the actual Ubuntu/Debian package of HPLIP,
as used in the hplip 3.23.12+dfsg0-0ubuntu2 release for Noble.

The adaptations were most probably needed because, before applying this
patch ~80 other patches got applied to the original source code of
HPLIP.

Especially the transition from "is not" to "!=" seems already done.

[Bug 2047758] Re: Cannot save PDFs due to PikePDF incompatibility, solved & patched upstream

2024-03-16 Thread Jens
First and foremost, thank you for your support!
I think I have found the root issue, but I have no idea how I got here.
Probably a manuall installation of some other tool via "pip install"?

$ sudo find / -name "libqpdf*.so*" 2>/dev/null
[sudo] password for jens:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/qt6/plugins/imageformats/libqpdf.so

/usr/local/lib/python3.10/dist-packages/pikepdf.libs/libqpdf-443ebe82.so.29.6.4

There's a version of the libqpdf on my system at "/usr/local".
However, the pikepdf library doesn't use it:

[Bug 2048768] Re: Autopkgtest failures on amd64

2024-03-16 Thread Philippe Blain
Hello, I see
https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gcc-13/commit/?id=6c5be2a496335c513dbe6fa85df2402cfc0f0a8b
imported the LLVM patch for Asan. There was also a similar change in
LLVM for LSan: https://github.com/llvm/llvm-
project/commit/5ffe955570a5d743bbbae204ce1b132e89fa86dc.

I was wondering if it was planned to also include that patch ?

I've experience the same kind of failure with Lsan on GCC 13:
https://github.com/phil-
blain/git/actions/runs/8281327655/job/22659588626. This is the `linux-
leaks` job in the Git CI suite which uses GCC 13.1.0 from the ubuntu-
toolchain-r/test PPA.

Side question: will the PPA also be updated with the Asan patch?

Thanks!

[Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

2024-03-16 Thread John Johansen
hi @vvaleryan-24,

I have been able to replicate the crash you are seeing but it is not do
to the user namespace restriction. The restrictions logging does not
happen, and I can put it in an unconfined profile and it still doesn't
help. From dmesg I find the following segfault

[79854.520976] gpk-application[19250]: segfault at 8 ip 5930eec2dba8 sp
7fff471b6b70 error 4 in gpk-application[5930eec24000+d000] likely on CPU 1

08 31 c0 e8 6d 79 ff ff c7 43 04 00 00 00 00 48 8b 7b 50

my recommendation is we move debugging over of this to the other bug.

[Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

2024-03-16 Thread John Johansen
@kc2bez: I have been able to verify that privacybrowser is not working.
However it is not due to the apparmor user namespace restrictions.

I get the following segfault out of dmesg
[ 1591.466016] privacybrowser[7743]: segfault at 8 ip 70bb4dd11ccc sp

08 89 b5 7c ff ff ff 64 48 8b 04 25 28 00 00 00 48 89 45

I recommend opining a separate bug to track the issue.
