[Bug 299650] [NEW] gnome-subtitles: support editing of subtitles from matroska

2008-11-18 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-subtitles

It would be excellent if gnome-subtitles were able to read .srt files
which are stored as tracks in matroska files.

Ability to save them too (edit in-place) would be even better, but
simply loading them would be a good start.

2008-11-25 Thread Alex Mauer
Yes, it's definitely a gstreamer problem.

I assume that by "w32" you mean "w32codecs". That package is not
necessary to play the video linked above, and installing it does not
allow totem(-gstreamer) to play the video.

[Bug 322827] [NEW] libpam-gnome-keyring: keyring password should be updated or cleared when a new system password is used

2009-01-29 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libpam-gnome-keyring

On a system set up to authenticate to an external service, such as LDAP,
Active Directory, or Kerberos: When the password is changed on the
external service (e.g. due to a forgotten password+reset or a forced
periodic password change where the user happened to log in on a
different machine when the change came due), the keyring is not
unlockable with the new password. This means that unless the user
remembers their old password, and knows how to change the keyring
password, the keyring must be wiped, losing all the keys stored in the
keyring.

This bug is distinct from several other similar bugs, in that it the
other bugs relate to the keyring password not being updated properly
when the password is changed on the current system. This one concerns
only the situation where the password is changed externally.

One possible (but very ugly) solution is to simply drop the current
keyring/passphrase and start anew when the user successfully logs in
using a password that doesn't unlock the keyring. Better would be to
somehow change the keyring password so that the keyring can be unlocked
with the new password.

This is in Ubuntu Jaunty.

[Bug 322827] Re: libpam-gnome-keyring: keyring password should be updated or cleared when a new system password is used

2009-01-29 Thread Alex Mauer
This is not the job of the tools used to change the password. It is not
the responsibility of say, "Active Directory Users and Computers" or
"ldappasswd" or "kpasswd" to know that libpam-gnome-keyring is used on
some arbitrary machine elsewhere and somehow go and change the keyring
password on that other machine. It is clearly the responsibility of
gnome-keyring to handle the situation gracefully when the password has
been changed elsewhere, outside of its control.

Fair enough, it *attempts* to open the keyring with the login password.
On a fresh install of Ubuntu, the passwords are the same, so the process

[Bug 360748] Re: GNOME keyboard layout options are not applied on login

2009-05-29 Thread Alex Mauer
OK, I've found an extra twist to this problem:

I'm on a Dell Latitude D620 in a docking station. The option does get
partially applied, but it only works with the built-in keyboard. The
setting does not get applied to the external USB keyboard that I use
most of the time, until I go into the options as described.

At the console, 'showkey' shows keycode 100 press/release for the right-
alt key on either keyboard.

In X, xev shows keycode 108 (keysym 0xffea, Alt_R) for the USB keyboard,
but keycode 108 (keysym 0xff20, Multi_key) for the built-in keyboard.

[Bug 314623] Re: likewise-open: allows lockout while disconnected

2009-04-28 Thread Alex Mauer
I tested by disabling the network (unchecking "Enable networking" on the
network manager applet in GNOME). I've also done it by simply
unplugging the network cable.

I used 'su - $USER', using a gnome-terminal session while logged in to
the GNOME desktop.

One incorrect, then one correct, allowed me to log in (using cached
credentials).
Two incorrect, then one correct, allowed me to log in (again, using cached
credentials).

Three incorrect, then one correct, did not allow me to log in, giving
the above error.

'sudo -i' gave similar results, although it prompted multiple times for
the password at one invocation rather than simply reporting
'Authentication failure' at the first failed attempt on each invocation.

In both cases, a correct password on the fourth or greater attempt will
display the error.

[Bug 293222] [NEW] totem doesn't understand video type video/x-ati-vcr

2008-11-03 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem-gstreamer

Totem cannot play video of type x-ati-vcr (fourcc appears to be VCR2).

When it tries, it displays at the console, "** Message: Missing plugin:
gstreamer|0.10|totem-gstreamer|ATI VCR 2 decoder|decoder-video/x-ati-
vcr, vcrversion=(int)2 (ATI VCR 2 decoder)"

It will run gstreamer-codec-install with the following commandline:

codecs either.

totem-xine is also unable to play this file, but of course does not run

[Bug 293232] [NEW] totem-gstreamer: doesn't display what codec it needs

2008-11-03 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

when totem-gstreamer encounters a video codec which it doesn't

[Bug 288532] Re: mplayer: can't skip to chapter with time code of 00:00:00.0 in Matroska files

2008-10-25 Thread Alex Mauer
On further examination this happens only with some files.

The only difference I can see between the one file I have that works,
and the rest, is that the non-working ones have vobsub subtitles, and
the working one has SSA subtitles.

I'll try converting one of the vobsub ones to SSA and see if that file
works then.

[Bug 288532] Re: mplayer: can't skip to first chapter in some matroska files

2008-10-27 Thread Alex Mauer
** Summary changed:

- mplayer: can't skip to chapter with time code of 00:00:00.0 in Matroska files
+ mplayer: can't skip to first chapter in some matroska files

** Description changed:

- If a chapter is defined as having a starting timecode of 00:00:00.0 in a
- Matroska file, mplayer is unable to skip to that chapter.
+ In some files, mplayer is unable to seek to the first chapter. It seems
+ to be related to having the timecode too early somehow. I was able to
+ work around it to some extent by setting the timecode for the first
+ chapter to something that starts on the second frame rather than the
+ first, i.e. for this 23.967 fps video, 0.05 seconds works while 0.04
+ seconds doesn't.

[Bug 288400] [NEW] Nautilus doesn't properly refresh volume labels on media change

2008-10-23 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

If I go to the "Computer" view and double-click on a CD-ROM, labeled
e.g. "My Data 1", nautilus will show [/][media][My Data 1] in the
button-based location bar. Clicking "up" moves me to [media] (/media on
the filesystem.

If I then eject the disc and insert one labeled e.g. "My Data 2", the
entry for the CD-ROM in the "Places" sidebar will change to show "My
Data 2". However, the location bar still shows [/][media][My Data 1] as
buttons ([media] being the currently-selected button). And if I double-
click on cdrom0, nautilus switches the selected button to [My Data 1],
but doesn't update the button label to reflect the new disc. Double-
clicking on "My Data 2" in the side bar has no effect. The button will
not change until I browse to somewhere else, such that the [My Data 1]
button is removed. At that point, going back to /media/cdrom0 will re-
add the button with the correct label.

[Bug 288390] [NEW] weird path for removeable media in Nautilus

2008-10-23 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

When going to the "Computer" view of Nautilus, I can see "Filesystem"
and a CD-ROM with a label, in this case "DN60AENU2". If I double-click
on the CD-ROM, the path buttons at the top change from "Computer" to "<"
(indicating there is more path to the left) and "DN60AENU2".

At this point, clicking "Up" will bring me to "/media" instead of
bringing me back to "Computer". Listed in "/media" are "cdrom0" and
"cdrom". No "DN60AENU2".

Double-clicking on the symlink "cdrom" takes me to (buttons)
[media][cdrom]. Double-clicking on "cdrom0" takes me to
[media][DN60AENU2]. Switching to a text-based location bar shows the
former as "/media/cdrom" and the latter as "/media/cdrom0".

I recognize why all these inconsistencies occur, but I feel that they
should not.

1. "Up" after "Down" should leave you where you started.
2. If a path is shown as [media][DN60AENU2] then there should be a "DN60AENU2"
item in [media].
3. opening the "cdrom0" item in [media] should take you to [media][cdrom0] not
[media][DN60AENU2].
4. If mount points are to be shown with their volume labels when you're in them
(i.e. when you're at /media/cdrom0 it shows as [media][DN60AENU2]), then
symlinks to them should behave the same.
5. The text-based location bar should be consistent with the button-based one.
6. Is there any reason that CD-ROMs are treated differently from other
removeable media? Most removeable media are mounted at their label, and their
mount point is removed they're ejected. CD-ROMs should work the same way.

[Bug 288526] [NEW] vlc: doesn't keep track of current chapter in Matroska files

2008-10-23 Thread Alex Mauer

keep track of what chapter it's on.

For example, if chapter two begins at 2:00, and you let the video play

[Bug 288374] Re: nautilus "rescan" of removable media fails

2008-10-24 Thread Alex Mauer
I really don't think it is. That one seems to be about (automatically)
checking for updated drive labels.

This one is not related to changing media.

If it is a duplicate, it's more likely to be of bug #197954, except that
one is in relation to floppy drives and merely accessing them rather
than hitting rescan.

That would make it a gvfs problem.

[Bug 147957] Re: root won't mount by UUID, device doesn't exist

2008-10-08 Thread Alex Mauer
lvm2 isn't installed. After installing it:

$ sudo lvm pvs
PV VG Fmt Attr PSize PFree
  /dev/sda5 lvm2 -- 14.65G 14.65G
$ sudo lvm lvs

I don't know of any reason that that device would be an LVM PV.

[Bug 273468] Re: No input after setting brightness on Dell Studio 1535

2008-10-09 Thread Alex Mauer
This is happening for me as well with a Dell Latitude X300. It happens
only in X. Switching VTs will allow the keyboard to work again for a
time.

[Bug 273713] [NEW] Dell Latitude X300: built-in SD card slot mounts read-only when sd card is 'unlocked', read-write when 'locked'

2008-09-23 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

On my Dell Latitude X300, the built-in SD card slot finally works in
Intrepid. So that's good.

However, it seems to have reversed the meaning of the SD card lock
switch!

If I set it to the "locked" position, it mounts as read-write. And if I
set it to "unlocked", it mounts read-only. It's not a mislabeled or
reversed switch, because on other devices it works properly.

I am using Ubuntu Intrepid.

[Bug 273788] [NEW] nm-applet: network selection menu scrolls very very slowly

2008-09-23 Thread Alex Mauer
Public bug reported:

When the list of networks found by nm-applet fills up the screen and
requires a vertical scroll, scrolling happens only extremely slowly,
approximately one-half or one-third of an entry per second. This means
that it can take an extremely long time to scroll down.

It looks to me like the frequency of the scroll is tied to the animation
of the progress bar which is used as a signal strength indicator. (the
animation jumps one frame at the same time as the scrolling happens).

Presumably the fix would be: don't use an animated progress bar, or
don't tie the scrolling to the animation of the many, many progress bars
