[Bug 288148] Re: Disabling ath5k in 2.6.27

2008-10-24 Thread Amit Kucheria
** Description changed:

- Hi,
+ ath5k as released in 2.6.27 does not work very well for many people.
+ Having it co-exist with madwifi also causes races like in bug 284354.

- ath5k as released in 2.6.27 has issues and should be disabled. It's not
- working or half working for some hardware, so it's best to advocate
- usage of lbm's ath5k or let people use madwifi for a bit longer.
+ The better option is to disable the in-kernel ath5k and recommend that
+ users install LBM

- Cheers,
+ The linux-backports-modules package provides an updated version of the
+ ath5k module.

What sort of performance penalty are we talking about here?

is significant?

[Bug 284354] Re: AR2424 on Samsung Q1 loads both ath_pci and ath5k modules

2008-10-23 Thread Amit Kucheria
Quoting Tim here regarding the 'two modules loading' problem:

The root of the problem is that all Atheros 5K adapters have but a few
unique PCI identifiers. However, 2 adapters with the same PCI ID may
have different RF backends. The newer RF2424 backends are not supported
by the released version of madwifi, yet the madwifi driver still gets
loaded (because the PCI ID matches), fails to init the part, bails out
with an error, and leaves the chipset in an inconsistent state such that
the ath5k adapter cannot init the part either, even though it may have
been able to support the newer backend.

So this can't really be solved without blacklisting one or the other
module.

[Bug 217309] Re: 8.04 i386 -generic kernel seeing 3GB RAM on 64-bit 8GB RAM system

2008-04-16 Thread Amit Kucheria
Aah.. so it is detected correctly by the LiveCDs.

In that case it is a simple case of the Desktop version of kernel
(-generic) not being configured to handle more than 4Gb memory. You have
two options:

1. Use the precompiled -server kernel that is configured to use upto
64Gb of memory

OR

2. Compile your own -generic kernel with CONFIG_HIGHMEM64G set

[Bug 197166] Re: [hardy] kernel should have usb persist mode built in

2008-04-25 Thread Amit Kucheria
While working with Classmate (toward the very end of Hardy), it was
discovered that simply enabling USB_PERSIST is not enough. We need
another patch[1] to get it to work correctly. However that patch doesn't
quite work due to another patch[2] in the Hardy tree. Since getting this
fixed in the short time was not possible, the USB Persist patch[1] did
not make it into the Hardy release.

It is now being made available through the classmate PPA[3]. Adding that
to your /etc/apt/sources.list should get you the new kernel when it is
built.

Also, I am currently not sure if eeePC will also require the
CONFIG_MMC_UNSAFE_RESUME option set, but I suspect it will.

Steps I followed:

3. Tried to tweak settings through Preferences, but it comes up empty

Adding those options to xorg.conf makes no difference. The log reported

And the minimal xorg.conf is generated by 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-

display's supported resolutions anymore.

[Bug 199427] Re: smarter relatime updates

2008-03-07 Thread Amit Kucheria
Patch is straighforward and disabled by default.

We can either enable CONFIG_DEFAULT_RELATIME to force all filesystems to
use relatime or force it by writing to
/proc/sys/kernel/default_relatime.

Else, only filesystems with the relatime option in /etc/fstab will use
this.

There are two things to try:

1. Upgrade the firmware on your drive to run the latest
2. Check with latest Gutsy release if this problem recurs

A quick google search for this drive seems to show that this drive is
causing problems to lots of people on Windows and Linux. Some people
have reported that the problem goes away with a firmware upgrade.
