[Bug 252560] [NEW] BCM4401 Ethernet card stopped working in Gutsy
Public bug reported: Hi I've been using my Dell Dimension 5000 with Ubuntu for a while now, but when this Monday I turned the PC on, I couldn't get network connection. If I starting with the boot cd, network works ok. Network was working last Thursday. After some digging I have found out that lspci can see my network card, but lshw says this: "network UNCLAIMED" (booting with boot cd does not say UNCLAIMED). I'm guessing it's a driver problem, probably after some update I may have done last week. Since my PC only has one network card, I cannot try and update my Ubuntu to see if has been fixed. I have looked on many forums and bug reports, but all I can see is networking problems after a while, or wireless problems solved with ndiswrapper. I really do not want to use ndiswrapper, specially because I probably do not need it. I'm attaching all the data I have gathered. Please tell me if you need anything else, for example, these same commands on my running boot cd (which I am using now). Thank you for your time. lsb_release -rd: Description:Ubuntu 7.10 Release:7.10 uname -a: Linux peel 2.6.24-20-generic #1 SMP Thu Jul 17 16:29:46 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux lspci: 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 82915G/P/GV/GL/PL/910GL Memory Controller Hub (rev 04) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82915G/P/GV/GL/PL/910GL PCI Express Root Port (rev 04) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) PCI Express Port 1 (rev 03) 00:1c.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) PCI Express Port 2 (rev 03) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #1 (rev 03) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #2 (rev 03) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #3 (rev 03) 00:1d.3 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB UHCI #4 (rev 03) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller (rev 03) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev d3) 00:1e.2 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) AC'97 Audio Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FR (ICH6/ICH6R) LPC Interface Bridge (rev 03) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) IDE Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FW (ICH6/ICH6W) SATA Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801FB/FBM/FR/FW/FRW (ICH6 Family) SMBus Controller (rev 03) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV610 video device [Radeon HD 2400 PRO] 04:03.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4401 100Base-T (rev 01) ** Affects: ubuntu Importance: Undecided Status: New -- BCM4401 Ethernet card stopped working in Gutsy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/252560 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 335732] [NEW] scim enabled installation does not allow accented letters on non-gnome apps
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: scim If scim is being used, accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome apps. Spanish layout uses a two-key press in order to write an accented letter (i.e. you click ´ and then a in order to write á). I'm not sure if this is a scim related problem, or if its related to the window manager (gnome, kde...). Steps to follow: -Go to System->Administration->Language support. -Add Spanish (I also installed Japanese, but you probably do not need to install it to reproduce the error) -Enable 'Complex character writing' (you will probably have to reboot) -Go to System->Preferences->Keyboard and make sure that you have Spanish(Spain) (I also installed greek, but you probably do not need to install it to reproduce the error) -Install some non-gnome application. Try for example Konqueror from the repositories, or download Opera from it's web. -Go to any non-gnome application and, using spanish layout, try to write any letter with any accent, such as á, it will write ´a. I reinstalled fresh again doing JUST these steps, and the problem happened again. [Bug 335732] Re: scim enabled installation does not allow accented letters on non-gnome apps
After seeing the packages, I thought I'd give it a try and install scim- bridge-client-qt 0.4.14-1ubuntu2 to see if Konkeror now behaved correctly, but it didn't work, even after rebooting. I also installed scim-qtimm 0.9.4-2ubuntu3, but that didn't fix it either, even after rebooting. Finally, I tried installing skim 1.4.5-4ubuntu3. Still nothing. -- scim enabled installation does not allow accented letters on non-gnome apps https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/335732 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 335732] Re: scim enabled installation does not allow accented letters on non-gnome apps
At some point during my installations I must have done something right. I still cannot write accented letters in non-gnome apps, such as Konkeror or Opera, but if I click on the small keyboard icon near the clock, I can now see two spanish icons: Spanish/Keyboard Other - Spanish/European The first one is the standard spanish keyboard, and it's the one that is failing. I cannot write á with it The second one seems to be the scim one, and it DOES allow me to write á with it! So my guess is it's not a scim problem, but a problem with whatever the standard keyboard application is. ** Changed in: ubuntu Sourcepackagename: scim => None -- scim enabled installation does not allow accented letters on non-gnome apps https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/335732 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 335732] Re: Accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome apps
This bus has been reintroduced in Ubuntu Karmic. I can confirm it happens in any out-of-the-box installation, and I can also confirm that it's not scim related, since scim is not even installed! The steps are the same as in the first post: Install any non-gnome app (such as kate), and try to write an accented letter. It will write ´a instead of á. You can check this with any keyboard, just make sure you have selected spanish layout. As an additional information, I enable complex writing with Alt-º and if I try that combination inside kate it does work, but it writes a º as well. Also, I can write 日本語 (japanese) and ελλινικα (greek) within Kate without problems. I haven't tried installing scim, since I fear it might spoil the ibus interface (this ibus thing is completely new to me). -- Accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome apps https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/335732 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 335732] Re: Accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome apps
I'm willing to make any tests you want. So far I have found this (always using standard repositories, except for Skype): - I install a new UBUNTU 9.10 - Gnome applications work fine (for example gedit) - I install Kate, Kopete, or any other KDE application (just tried a few), and it will NOT let me write á , it will write ´a - I install aMSN (TCL/TK) and it will simply write a instead of á , it won't even write the ´ - I install Skype (something not really standard), and it will NOT let me write á , it will write ´a Also I have found this: - I install a new KUBUNTU 9.10 - KDE applications work fine (for example kate) - I install gedit, empathy, or any other Gnome application (just tried a few), and it WILL let me write á without problems. - I install aMSN (TCL/TK) and it WILL let me write á without problems. - I install Skype (something not really standard) and it WILL let me write á without problems. Hi Román I didn't know those were called "dead keys". I've read about dead keys before, but never knew what exactly they were ;-) I rerolled to kubuntu on my main computer, but since I have special interest in this issue, and I'm very happy with you trying to figure this out, I just installed a new Ubuntu64 VM from scratch. These were the steps taken and their results: 1) Clean installation in spanish 2) Updated everything and rebooted 3) Opened up a gnome app and tried to write Á or Â. It worked fine, as it always did (these things must be tested just in case) 4) Installed kate, a KDE application and tried to write Á or Â. It worked fine! It just didn't before, it would write ´A. 5) Installed amsn, a TCL application and tried to write Á or Â. It worked fine! It just didn't before, it would write A. 6) Downloaded skype from the web and installed it; I don't even know what it uses. It worked fine! It just didn't before, it would write ´A. 7) After reading your link, I decided I would open up openoffice writer. Tried to write Á or Â. It worked fine, as it always did (these things must be tested just in case) 8) Being completely amazed at this, I went to a workmate's pc that still uses Ubuntu64 and had this problem as well. Kate worked. I guess it must have been fixed in some update since my last post. I'll use the oportunity to try KDE. So far I like it, even though it's so different that I have to relearn even the most basic things. One last thing, I tried to do this: # ps axu | grep -i ibus And found no ibus process running. Thank you for your time, and happy new year!
Sorry for the spam. I was so happy that I decided I could finally write in japanese and in spanish, so I added support for Japanese writing. That accomplished two things: -Now I have the Ibus icon near the clock -Now I cannot use dead keys in non-gnome applications :-( So these are the steps I took: 1) Run "/usr/lib/ibus/ibus-x11 &" without killing current ibus. Still cannot write Á, it writes ´A 2) Restart the computer and run "ps axu | grep -i ibus". Now I see several processes: - /usr/bin/ibus-daemon --xim - /usr/lib/ibus/ibus-gconf - python /usr/share/ibus/ui/gtk/main.py - /usr/lib/ibus/ibus-x11 --kill-daemon - python /usr/share/ibus-anthy/engine/main.py --ibus 3) Try all previous apps (kate, tcl, xterm, etc...). They all fail to write Á So yes, the problem comes when you have a dead-key language, such as spanish or french, and a complex writing language, such as japanese or chinese. I used to be able to overcome this using scim, and selecting spanish inside of it. Now I'm not even able to do that. My guess is that if I try to add japanese to my kubuntu something will break as well. I can try and install a clean kubuntu if you want. -- Accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome apps https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/335732 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1750812] [NEW] Ubuntu install crashes when installing uefi
Public bug reported: I started Ubuntu from a USB drive, then clicked on "Install Ubuntu". I chose to both download packages during installation and install 3rd party software, then I chose all my options (lang: EN, keyb: ES, etc.). I answered that I wanted UEFI even if my old OS was not UEFI. I also did manual partitioning like this: - Delete sda1 - Create sda1 as ext4 - Format sda1 - Mount sda1 as / - Mount sdb1 as ext4 - DO NOT format sdb1 (it's my old home partition and I want to keep it!) - Mount sdb1 as /home - Mount sdb2 as swap - Format sdb2 - Install loader on sda Installation was going fine but at the end it failed when doing something with UEFI. Maybe I needed to create a partition for UEFI? [Bug 1080058] [NEW] Unable to install on Ubuntu with EFI and GPT, but GPT disk is not the boot disk
Public bug reported: I have a computer with several disks and with Windows 7 64bit installed. The boot disk is an SSD and the home, tmp, and swap partitions are in a 3TB GPT disk. During install I chose manual partitioning, and created all partitions, both on the SSD and on the GPT disk. When trying to install, sometimes the cd would not boot, and I would fix that by choosing EFI-cd-boot from the bios. Some other times I did not choose that but it booted sometimes (maybe kept that boot config). I have installed lots of Ubuntus and have found almost all posible problem, but this is new to me and I cannot figure out how to fix it. I'm thinking it may be related to using a GPT disk, but I'm not sure. [Bug 482597] Re: Empathy dialpad tones don't work
For a change I will comment to say that something DOES work, instead of the opposite. Just tried this with our local Asterisk server and calling an external line using a commercial voip trunk, and I can confirm that the Dialpad DOES indeed work perfectly with these: -Linux 2.6.35-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 17:40:44 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux -Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat -telepathy-sofiasip 0.6.3-1 -empathy 2.32.1-0ubuntu1.1 I can also confirm that i would have NEVER found it if not for Darik Horn's previous post in this bug report, and even having it, it took me a moment until I noticed that "Audio Input" was actually a listbox with the option "Autio Input" selected, although that's perhaps "theme's fault" (I use Ubuntu 10.10 with the standard theme). So, this is not a bug, specially not in the underlying communication plug-in (telepathy-sofiasip), but Empathy clearly needs some GUI modifications so that finding the keypad is not 'so absolutely imposible'. Maybe allowing pressing numbers even if the pad is unseen? Maybe bringing up the pad when a number is pressed? How about showing the keypad by default when you open the sidebar instead of the volume levels? [Bug 335732] Re: Accented letters (dead keys) do not work (i.e. stop being 'dead') if you install a complex writing language
