[Bug 252560] [NEW] BCM4401 Ethernet card stopped working in Gutsy

2008-07-28 Thread Calabacin
Public bug reported:

Hi

I've been using my Dell Dimension 5000 with Ubuntu for a while now, but
when this Monday I turned the PC on, I couldn't get network connection.
If I starting with the boot cd, network works ok. Network was working
last Thursday.

After some digging I have found out that lspci can see my network card,
but lshw says this: "network UNCLAIMED" (booting with boot cd does not
say UNCLAIMED). I'm guessing it's a driver problem, probably after some
update I may have done last week. Since my PC only has one network card,
I cannot try and update my Ubuntu to see if has been fixed.

I have looked on many forums and bug reports, but all I can see is
networking problems after a while, or wireless problems solved with
ndiswrapper. I really do not want to use ndiswrapper, specially because
I probably do not need it.

I'm attaching all the data I have gathered. Please tell me if you need
anything else, for example, these same commands on my running boot cd
(which I am using now).

Thank you for your time.

2008-07-31 Thread Calabacin
Hi

I've just added all requested information (lspci -vvnn and dmesg). And here is
the result of uname -a:
Linux peel 2.6.24-20-generic #1 SMP Thu Jul 17 16:29:46 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

I will try to get a workmate's PCI NIC card and see if it works and if
upgrading fixes it, but I'm not sure of when this will happen. I am
currently working from home.

Wether this is fixed or not, thank you for your time (although I hope it
gets fixed ofx xD).

[Bug 335732] [NEW] scim enabled installation does not allow accented letters on non-gnome apps

2009-02-27 Thread Calabacin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: scim

If scim is being used, accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome
apps.

Spanish layout uses a two-key press in order to write an accented letter
(i.e. you click ´ and then a in order to write á).

I'm not sure if this is a scim related problem, or if its related to the
window manager (gnome, kde...).

Steps to follow:
-Go to System->Administration->Language support.
-Add Spanish (I also installed Japanese, but you probably do not need to
install it to reproduce the error)
-Enable 'Complex character writing' (you will probably have to reboot)
-Go to System->Preferences->Keyboard and make sure that you have Spanish(Spain)
(I also installed greek, but you probably do not need to install it to
reproduce the error)
-Install some non-gnome application. Try for example Konqueror from the
repositories, or download Opera from it's web.
-Go to any non-gnome application and, using spanish layout, try to write any
letter with any accent, such as á, it will write ´a.

I reinstalled fresh again doing JUST these steps, and the problem happened
again. All packages are up to date.
scim 1.4.7-3ubuntu8
scim-anthy 1.2.4-1ubuntu2
scim-bridge-agent 0.4.14-1ubuntu2
scim-bridge-client-gtk 0.4.14-1ubuntu2

[Bug 335732] Re: scim enabled installation does not allow accented letters on non-gnome apps

2009-02-27 Thread Calabacin
After seeing the packages, I thought I'd give it a try and install scim-
bridge-client-qt 0.4.14-1ubuntu2 to see if Konkeror now behaved
correctly, but it didn't work, even after rebooting.

I also installed scim-qtimm 0.9.4-2ubuntu3, but that didn't fix it
either, even after rebooting.

Finally, I tried installing skim 1.4.5-4ubuntu3. Still nothing.

[Bug 335732] Re: scim enabled installation does not allow accented letters on non-gnome apps

2009-02-27 Thread Calabacin
At some point during my installations I must have done something right.
I still cannot write accented letters in non-gnome apps, such as
Konkeror or Opera, but if I click on the small keyboard icon near the
clock, I can now see two spanish icons:

Spanish/Keyboard
Other - Spanish/European

The first one is the standard spanish keyboard, and it's the one that is
failing. I cannot write á with it
The second one seems to be the scim one, and it DOES allow me to write á with
it!

So my guess is it's not a scim problem, but a problem with whatever the
standard keyboard application is.

[Bug 82286] Re: [apport] destar.py crashed with TypeError in file_input()

2009-06-10 Thread Calabacin
I just tried to run destar on my Ubuntu Jaunty and I have a similar problem:
TypeError: import_module() takes at most 4 arguments (5 given)

Installed packages:
destar 0.2.2-5.2ubuntu1
python-quixote1 1.2-4.1ubuntu1

I tried installing python 2.4 and changing the first line in
/usr/share/destar/python/destar.py from:
#!/usr/bin/env python

to
#!/usr/bin/env python2.4

But now I get a new error:
ImportError: No module named medusa

I guess this error came back after last packages' update ??

[Bug 107188] Re: [MASTER] [kde] Upgrade tool crashed (edgy -> feisty)

2007-04-22 Thread Calabacin
Hi

I just got this same problem. I do not have any wireless configured, I
am connected to a LAN router. I did not lose connectivity after the
crash, and I am in fact writing this from my Kubuntu system, that seems
to work fine.

After confirming I wanted to uninstall those old packages it just
stopped working. Before I got any crash report I tried to open a folder
clicking on it on the desktop, but it wouldn't work. Just waited there
until I got that out of memory error message and a moment afterwards
Konkeror finally opened.

These are the packages that were to be uninstalled:
libgnucrypto-java
libgtkhtml3.8-15
libjaxp1.2-java
libkexif1
libpq4
libsasl2
libstlport4.6c2

[Bug 335732] Re: Accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome apps

2009-12-04 Thread Calabacin
This bus has been reintroduced in Ubuntu Karmic. I can confirm it
happens in any out-of-the-box installation, and I can also confirm that
it's not scim related, since scim is not even installed!

The steps are the same as in the first post:
Install any non-gnome app (such as kate), and try to write an accented letter.
It will write ´a instead of á.

You can check this with any keyboard, just make sure you have selected
spanish layout.

As an additional information, I enable complex writing with Alt-º and if
I try that combination inside kate it does work, but it writes a º as
well. Also, I can write 日本語 (japanese) and ελλινικα (greek) within Kate
without problems.

I haven't tried installing scim, since I fear it might spoil the ibus
interface (this ibus thing is completely new to me).

[Bug 335732] Re: Accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome apps

2009-12-11 Thread Calabacin
I'm willing to make any tests you want.

So far I have found this (always using standard repositories, except for Skype):
- I install a new UBUNTU 9.10
- Gnome applications work fine (for example gedit)
- I install Kate, Kopete, or any other KDE application (just tried a few), and
it will NOT let me write á , it will write ´a
- I install aMSN (TCL/TK) and it will simply write a instead of á , it won't
even write the ´
- I install Skype (something not really standard), and it will NOT let me write
 á , it will write ´a

Also I have found this:
- I install a new KUBUNTU 9.10
- KDE applications work fine (for example kate)
- I install gedit, empathy, or any other Gnome application (just tried a few),
and it WILL let me write á without problems.
- I install aMSN (TCL/TK) and it WILL let me write á without problems.
- I install Skype (something not really standard) and it WILL let me write á
without problems.

So everything works fine with Kubuntu.

Is there any other solutions for Spanish-speaking users other than
rerolling to Kubuntu?

Regards,

[Bug 282234] Re: kate ignores settings for TAB

2010-03-04 Thread Calabacin
It may work as you intended, but I consider this behaviour as a 'bug' in
the design. If I untick 'Insert spaces instead of tabs', I expect it to
insert tabs when I push TAB...

[Bug 335732] Re: Accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome apps

2009-10-28 Thread Calabacin
Hi Rolf.

IT WORKED. Thanks a lot! This was a really annoying issue, you can't
imagine.

I cannot find a way to see what language I am typing in, but I guess
that it'll be somewhere to be found.

Steps followed:
--
- Installed Karmic in spanish (if you install in any other language, just add
the spanish(Spain) layout.
- Upgraded all packages
- Installed Kate (any non-gnome app, such as Konkeror, will do)
- Started Kate (or the non-gnome app you installed)
- Tried to write an accented letter, such as á and it worked
--

After installing japanese support and input method, I have been unable
to setup my computer to also write in that language, even fiddling with
the Ibus settings.

[Bug 335732] Re: Accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome apps

2009-12-30 Thread Calabacin
Hi Román

I didn't know those were called "dead keys". I've read about dead keys
before, but never knew what exactly they were ;-)

I rerolled to kubuntu on my main computer, but since I have special
interest in this issue, and I'm very happy with you trying to figure
this out, I just installed a new Ubuntu64 VM from scratch. These were
the steps taken and their results:

1) Clean installation in spanish
2) Updated everything and rebooted
3) Opened up a gnome app and tried to write Á or Â. It worked fine, as it
always did (these things must be tested just in case)
4) Installed kate, a KDE application and tried to write Á or Â. It worked fine!
It just didn't before, it would write ´A.
5) Installed amsn, a TCL application and tried to write Á or Â. It worked fine!
It just didn't before, it would write A.
6) Downloaded skype from the web and installed it; I don't even know what it
uses. It worked fine! It just didn't before, it would write ´A.
7) After reading your link, I decided I would open up openoffice writer. Tried
to write Á or Â. It worked fine, as it always did (these things must be tested
just in case)
8) Being completely amazed at this, I went to a workmate's pc that still uses
Ubuntu64 and had this problem as well. Kate worked.

I guess it must have been fixed in some update since my last post. I'll
use the oportunity to try KDE. So far I like it, even though it's so
different that I have to relearn even the most basic things.

One last thing, I tried to do this:
# ps axu | grep -i ibus
And found no ibus process running. Is this normal?

[Bug 335732] Re: Accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome apps

2009-12-30 Thread Calabacin
By the way, I didn't try the ibus-x11 command since it all worked, but I
did do the echo {text, pack, focus}$' .t\n' | wish and was able to write Á
in that window with no problem.

Thank you for your time, and happy new year!

[Bug 335732] Re: Accented letters cannot be written on non-gnome apps

2009-12-30 Thread Calabacin
Sorry for the spam. I was so happy that I decided I could finally write
in japanese and in spanish, so I added support for Japanese writing.

That accomplished two things:
-Now I have the Ibus icon near the clock
-Now I cannot use dead keys in non-gnome applications :-(

So these are the steps I took:
1) Run "/usr/lib/ibus/ibus-x11 &" without killing current ibus. Still cannot
write Á, it writes ´A
2) Restart the computer and run "ps axu | grep -i ibus". Now I see several
processes:
- /usr/bin/ibus-daemon --xim
- /usr/lib/ibus/ibus-gconf
- python /usr/share/ibus/ui/gtk/main.py
- /usr/lib/ibus/ibus-x11 --kill-daemon
- python /usr/share/ibus-anthy/engine/main.py --ibus

3) Try all previous apps (kate, tcl, xterm, etc...). They all fail to
write Á

So yes, the problem comes when you have a dead-key language, such as
spanish or french, and a complex writing language, such as japanese or
chinese.

I used to be able to overcome this using scim, and selecting spanish
inside of it. Now I'm not even able to do that.

My guess is that if I try to add japanese to my kubuntu something will
break as well. I can try and install a clean kubuntu if you want.

[Bug 1750812] [NEW] Ubuntu install crashes when installing uefi

2018-02-21 Thread Calabacin
Public bug reported:

I started Ubuntu from a USB drive, then clicked on "Install Ubuntu".

I chose to both download packages during installation and install 3rd
party software, then I chose all my options (lang: EN, keyb: ES, etc.).
I answered that I wanted UEFI even if my old OS was not UEFI. I also did
manual partitioning like this:

- Delete sda1
- Create sda1 as ext4
- Format sda1
- Mount sda1 as /
- Mount sdb1 as ext4
- DO NOT format sdb1 (it's my old home partition and I want to keep it!)
- Mount sdb1 as /home
- Mount sdb2 as swap
- Format sdb2
- Install loader on sda

Installation was going fine but at the end it failed when doing
something with UEFI.

Maybe I needed to create a partition for UEFI? If so, I wasn't warned.

[Bug 1750812] Re: Ubuntu install crashes when installing uefi

I confirm that after creating an EFI partition everything worked. I
consider this to be a bug because the installation software didn't warn
me of the fact that I didn't have an EFI partition.

I followed steps stated here:

[Bug 1579708] Re: mysql maintainer scripts fail if files in /etc/mysql have been deleted locally

2016-06-17 Thread Calabacin
In my case I had MySQL and wanted to install MariaDB. After using
MariaDB for some time I decided it was not for me and tried to go back
to MySQL. That's when hell started. There is no way to recover what I
had before and everything I try seems to fail. I thought I had it
finally working but I now get these MySQL crashes all the time.

[Bug 1080058] [NEW] Unable to install on Ubuntu with EFI and GPT, but GPT disk is not the boot disk

2012-11-17 Thread Calabacin
Public bug reported:

I have a computer with several disks and with Windows 7 64bit installed.
The boot disk is an SSD and the home, tmp, and swap partitions are in a
3TB GPT disk. During install I chose manual partitioning, and created
all partitions, both on the SSD and on the GPT disk.

Install did everything flawlessly, and then several things have happened (tried
installing several times):
1.- grub was installed but ubuntu would reboot during the early boot
2.- Reinstalled and managed to boot, but then the next day it would reboot just
like in step 1 (I hadn't tried to boot after doing all updates before)
3.- Reinstalled. Now grub would not work. Tried to fix that by booting to the
CD and installing grub on almost all disks. It worked, but then Ubuntu would
reboot as before
4.- Reinstalled one last time, but now grub does not work. It says it cannot
find i386-pc/normal.mod

I cannot exit step 4 now, and my Windows 7 is unbootable. I can access
all disks from my boot-cd, so I can send any file you may need.

When trying to install, sometimes the cd would not boot, and I would fix
that by choosing EFI-cd-boot from the bios. Some other times I did not
choose that but it booted sometimes (maybe kept that boot config).

I have installed lots of Ubuntus and have found almost all posible
problem, but this is new to me and I cannot figure out how to fix it.
I'm thinking it may be related to using a GPT disk, but I'm not sure.

I'm attaching /var/log/installer/syslog found on the installation disk
(/dev/sda1), I am getting this file and sending this report from the
Ubuntu boot cd (no other way to use my computer at this time). If you
want me to install again, and then, without rebooting, get the logs, I
can do that without problem.

[Bug 1080058] Re: Unable to install on Ubuntu with EFI and GPT, but GPT disk is not the boot disk

2012-11-21 Thread Calabacin
After following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Boot-
Repair">this guide I was able to finally boot grub (apparently it
only worked if grub was installed in partition /dev/sda5).

I still cannot boot Ubuntu, it reboots before showing any information,
and because grub does not support USB keyboards I cannot even choose to
start Windows.

But I guess that this problem was 'solved'.

[Bug 482597] Re: Empathy dialpad tones don't work

2011-02-02 Thread Calabacin
For a change I will comment to say that something DOES work, instead of
the opposite.

Just tried this with our local Asterisk server and calling an external line
using a commercial voip trunk, and I can confirm that the Dialpad DOES indeed
work perfectly with these:
-Linux 2.6.35-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 17:40:44 UTC 2011
x86_64 GNU/Linux
-Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat
-telepathy-sofiasip 0.6.3-1
-empathy 2.32.1-0ubuntu1.1

I can also confirm that i would have NEVER found it if not for Darik
Horn's previous post in this bug report, and even having it, it took me
a moment until I noticed that "Audio Input" was actually a listbox with
the option "Autio Input" selected, although that's perhaps "theme's
fault" (I use Ubuntu 10.10 with the standard theme).

So, this is not a bug, specially not in the underlying communication
plug-in (telepathy-sofiasip), but Empathy clearly needs some GUI
modifications so that finding the keypad is not 'so absolutely
imposible'. Maybe allowing pressing numbers even if the pad is unseen?
Maybe bringing up the pad when a number is pressed? How about showing
the keypad by default when you open the sidebar instead of the volume
levels? Since I cannot code, I like to at least give ideas, I hope they
help :-)

Thank you

[Bug 335732] Re: Accented letters (dead keys) do not work (i.e. stop being 'dead') if you install a complex writing language

2011-01-19 Thread Calabacin
While this bug is fixed, I've found a workaround for non-working apps,
such as Skype.

I just created a file in the path, for example /usr/bin/skype-ibus with
the following commands:

--
#!/bin/bash
unset XMODIFIERS # unsets the environment variable telling apps which XIM
module to use
/usr/bin/skype-wrapper & # starts Skype in a child process
--

That way I prevent the app from using ibus, since my standard config is:
XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus

This "re-confirms" this to be an ibus issue, in my opinion, probably
with some module since most apps work fine.

At least, most apps do not suffer this problem now.

Thank you for your good work. Let me know if I can help solving this.

[Bug 335732] Re: Accented letters (dead keys) do not work (i.e. stop being 'dead') if you install a complex writing language

2011-01-19 Thread Calabacin
** Description changed:

Accented letters (dead keys) do not work if you install a complex
  writing language

Spanish layout uses a two-key press in order to write an accented letter
(i.e. you click ´ and then a in order to write á). Now I know these are
  called dead keys.

  Steps to follow:
-Install Ubuntu in a language with dead keys, such as spanish or french
- -Add a complex writing language, such as japanese or chinese
- -Now you cannot write á you will write ´a instead. It's like dead keys stop
being dead
+ -Add a complex writing language, such as japanese or chinese (this will
install ibus)
+ -Now in some applications (like skype), you will not be able to write á; you
will write ´a instead. It's like dead keys stop being dead

Previously, if you installed complex writing (scim) and added spanish to
it, you were able to write accented letters, as long as you use the scim
"Spanish/European" layout, and not the linux default. Now even that
  doesn't work

This seems to be the same bug as
  http://code.google.com/p/ibus/issues/detail?id=526
+
+ As a workaround, you can create a script that disables ibus for a
+ problematic application. Example for skype:

If it's hard to reproduce for you, I'm having it every now and then on
my Ubuntu 9.04 server 64-bit, and I am willing to enable logs and do
anything necessary to help you.
