[Bug 336230] [NEW] unable to connect to WPA-protected network

2009-03-01 Thread Gábor Farkas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

i'm using Jaunty (updated today) on a HP mini 2140 notebook,
if i set my wifi network to unprotected, i can connect to it.

but if i set it to wpa1, it does not work:

networkmanager tries to connect to it,
asks me the password, which i enter,
then tries to connect for roughly a minute,

then asks for the password again,
i enter it, then it tries to connect for roughly a minute,
then asks for the password again,
and so on.

the strange thing is, that when networkmanager
asks for the password again,
then in the text-field,
where i should enter the password,
a long hexa-string is pre-filled
(and not the password i entered last time)

(the laptop comes pre-installed with suse-enterprise-desktop 10,
and when using that one, i am able to connect to the wpa1-protected network.)

lspci says this about the wifi-hardware:

08:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4322 802.11a/b/g/n
Wireless LAN Controller (rev 01)

the hardware-drivers window says a binary driver called Broadcom STA
wireless driver is currently used.

[Bug 336230] Re: unable to connect to WPA-protected network

2009-03-01 Thread Gábor Farkas
after further testing, it seems it's not completely blackwhite...

if i set my access-point to non-hidden (means with SSID broadcasted) WPA1,
then sometimes i'm able to connect.

if i set it to hidden, i'm unable to connect.

but even in the non-hidden-ssid case, it's not 100% sure that the
connection will be established...

i was trying to find out what networkmanager is doing in more details,
but i couldn't find any log-files or such... is there maybe a way to force
networkmanager to log what he's doing?

[Bug 336628] [NEW] boot-process often reboots laptop (hp mini 2140)

2009-03-02 Thread Gábor Farkas
Public bug reported:

on a hp mini 2140, i installed ubuntu jaunty (it was last updated on
1.mar.2009).
when booting ubuntu, it very often happens that the laptop suddenly reboots.
in other cases the boot process works normally.

it's hard to reproduce the problem, because sometimes i am able to boot
it repeatedly 4-5 times correctly, and sometimes the boot-process fails
(causes reboot) 4-5 times in a row.

if i count the number of successful and unsuccessful reboots for a longer time
(2days),
i would say 30%-40% of all the boots are successful.

the same problem also happens with the jaunty install/live cd-images too
(i am using them using a bootable-usb-stick)

i tried to find the exact place where the reboot happens, but it's hard
to find it:

- i disabled splash, and removed quiet from the boot parameters,
and now i see that the reboot happens roughly when the USB-devices
are mentioned in the messages shown by the kernel.
this is before any file-system is mounted and such.

unfortunately i cannot say the exact line on which the reboot
happens because it happens very fast.

if there is a way to log those messages somewhere,
i'd be happy to find the exact place of course.

when the boot works correctly, the system seems to behave ok.
there is only one error shown in dmesg, and it's related
to the graphich-chip, and something about 'vblank'
(i do not have the exact error-message currently,
but will put it in a comment here, when i have
access to the laptop again. also i will open a separate
bugreport about that problem). but the graphics
work correctly.

the laptop comes preinstalled with suse linux enterprise desktop,
and the boot-process works correctly in that operating system.

[Bug 336888] [NEW] kernel error-message (vblank i915 etc.) on HP mini 2140

2009-03-02 Thread Gábor Farkas
Public bug reported:

on a hp mini 2140, Jaunty (last updated on 1.mar.2009), when X starts,
i get the following message in dmesg:

[drm:i915_get_vblank_counter] *ERROR* trying to get vblank count for
disabled pipe 0

also, in the graphical mode, i get a notification window (kerneloops-ui)
saying Your system had a kernel failure. . i assume it's about the
above-mentioned error.

this also happens after waking up the laptop from suspended state.

except the error-message being there, it does not seem to cause any problems.

[Bug 336230] Re: unable to connect to WPA-protected network

2009-03-06 Thread Gábor Farkas
after more testing, it might be that the problem is not really with
NetworkManager.

i installed wicd (which uninstalled NetworkManager),
and there it was much easier to see exactly what is happening.
when i set my access point to not-hidden mode (broadcast SSID),
then i was able to connect to the WPA1 network.
when i set it to hidden, i was not able to connect to it anymore.
in fact, wicd claimed the network does not exist.

normally at this point i would be suspicious about the access-point,
that maybe it's just broken,
but i am able to connect to it's hidden WPA1 network
without problems from the suse-linux-enterprise-desktop-10,
which is preinstalled on the laptop.

[Bug 336230] Re: unable to connect to WPA-protected network

2009-03-06 Thread Gábor Farkas
regarding the driver used,
it's a binary-only driver called wl.
ubuntu reports that a binary driver is used, and if i disable it,
then (after restart), the wireless device is not even available.

in the preinstalled suse-linux-enterprise-desktop-10,
it seems the same wl driver is used, but i do not know
if the exact same version or a different one.

[Bug 338707] [NEW] Marvell Technology Group ethernet card sometimes not detected

2009-03-06 Thread Gábor Farkas
Public bug reported:

this is a HP mini 2140 laptop, with Jaunty.

when i boot the laptop, then the network card is sometimes not recognized.
it seems that if the network-cable is not connected at boot-time,
the network-card is usually not recognized.
when the network-cable is connected at startup,
the network-card is usually recognized.

i'm saying usually here, because i didn't do so many tests
to see if it's 100% like i described.
(because bug 336628 it's hard to test such things)

when the network-card is detected,
lspci contains this:

20:00.0 Ethernet controller: Marvell Technology Group Ltd. Device 436c (rev 10)

and the module used is sky2.

if the network-card is not detected,
lspci simply does not contain this line.

the laptop comes preinstalled with suse linux enterprise desktop 10,
there the network-card is detected always correctly.

i applied the mentioned firmware, and it seems to work now. i did not do
any big testing, i just restarted the laptop with an unplugged network
cable, and the network card was correctly recognized. i tried it both
with batter-power and with normal-power. this is on karmic-current.
