 Hey jake-mcgregor,

You filed this bug report against natty, but I see it's still open and
doesn't appear to have much activity recently. So, now that oneiric
is released and stable, this may be a good point for you to upgrade
and re-test if this issue is still present there.

If it's solved in the new release and you think it's worth backporting
the fix, please indicate that. Or if having the fix in the new release
is good enough, feel free to close out the bug (or let us know and we'll
 close it.)

If it's not solved, leave the bug report open. I can't promise we'll
get to it (we get way more bugs filed than we can usually get to), but
your testing and feedback can help out if and when we do.

I think this bug has been indirectly fixed now, maybe by someone else making
Unity more stable. I have just checked for the bug and it seems to be gone,
so I think it can be closed now. Also, I know this is for bugs, but I think
that there needs to be some more features for having a cube desktop. I have
Gnome setup with 6 desktops, with the desktops rotating when the mouse
approaches the edge. I would love to see this ability in Unity, where there
is a place to select what desktop you want (an app on the taskbar) but since
Unity doesn't use a bottom taskbar or allow app icons to be placed on the
taskbars (another feature worth adding), or even a clear way of adding or
subtracting desktops, I am stuck with editing the registry if I want more
desktops. Overall the setup for adding a cube desktop isn't very easy to
setup and it would be cool if that could be changed. Just a thought. By the
way, is there a place I can send comments like this to the Ubuntu developers?
Let me know what your think.

[Bug 781956] [NEW] Compiz tweaking crashed new gui

2011-05-12 Thread Jake McGregor
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Just after a network upgrade from 10.10, the GUI worked fine, at least
until I changed a few settings that made the menu bars disappear and now
after several reboots it still fails to load the menu bars. The classic
gui works fine but I like the new one is set up, and hopefully it can be
restored.

RE: [Bug 450569] Re: package openoffice.org-emailmerge 1:3.0.1-9ubuntu3.1 failed to install/upgrade:

2010-04-03 Thread Jake McGregor

Basically, when I downloaded updates, a package failed to install and screwed
things up. Ubuntu works fine now, but GRUB has two entries for the same thing.
Sometimes when one entry fails to boot, the other one works fine. It's kinda
strange because for a while the first entry in GRUB just booted as text based
with the screen rapidly blinking. After a while it dissappeared, and both
entries work fine I hope I'm not confusing you any, but I think the package has
a glitch somewhere. I'll send you a pic of the GRUB screen if needed.

[Bug 581936] Re: [Lucid]Sudden drop of connecton speed (iwl3945 Broadcom issue)

2012-04-23 Thread Jake McGregor
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 621265 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/621265

Not sure if this is related but after messing around with /etc/resolv.conf and
refreshing the internet adapters (which also reset the resolv.conf) after
attempting to install updates (sudo apt-get upgrade) I got this error;
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to
correct the problem.
After running that command, the updates installed, some of which I thought
never downloaded completely. I haven't had any further updates to test if this
is a perminant fix but its still worth trying.

[Bug 1202754] Re: update-manager crashed with SystemExit in exit(): 0

2014-02-05 Thread Jake McGregor
As other have mentioned, Trusty amd64 is also affected. For some reason,
my 'about this system' in control panel still says I'm running Saucy,
probably unrelated, but I'm not sure. The update process still appears
to be running, but the window is only the top bar and nothing else. I
assume the updates are installing, as there is a progress bar on the
icon like usual. I'll let it run and see what happens.

[Bug 1202010] Re: package qmail 1.06-5 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2013-07-19 Thread Jake McGregor
This probably isn't a bug, and here's why; It turns out that Postfix was
in fact working and the emails were being sent. The issue was they were
being marked as spam, and on top of that, the Gmail app for Android has
been having sync issues. Every time I would check the spam box from the
app, there would be nothing there, because it never synced. Now that I
am aware of this, I think the conflict was that Postfix and Qmail were
installed at the same time, which caused the error.

I forgot to add, it might be relevent that I have Spanish set as my
default language. I didn't think it would matter but I wasn't sure.

[Bug 1283826] Re: lightdm hangs after updates

2014-06-07 Thread Jake McGregor
This sounds very similar to what I'm experiencing on Ubuntu 14.10. Basically,
when I login, teh screen goes blank for a moment, then right back to the login.
I have reason to believe a recent update made this happen. From what I've been
reading, I think it has something to do with the .Xauthority file found at ~/ .
I found something similar to what I was experiencing.
http://askubuntu.com/questions/367260/i-am-logged-out-immediately-after-logging-in\
Supposedly if I removed ~/.Xauthority (I made a backup) it would be regenerated
after lightdm restarts. Well it doesn't, and I'm still stuck in a loop.

If anyone needs any command output, feel free to ask.

2014-07-08 Thread Jake McGregor
I think I found something else that might be slightly related. I first
came across this error when I was removing some packages remotely via

below from when I removed a package. Look carefully at the last few

[Bug 1283826] Re: lightdm hangs after updates

2014-07-18 Thread Jake McGregor
I don't this this is specific to just LightDM. I tried installing KDM to
see if it too would lock up occasionally, and it does. It's very strange
because no keyboard input is recognized, not even ctrl+alt+f does
anything. Next time I'll give it a while to see if it snaps out of it.

2014-07-18 Thread Jake McGregor
Well whatever it is, I know ssh logins are still possible. If available
I can login from another machine via ssh and reboot from there. Nothing
seems to be locked up from that end, so I know it's not the core system.
It also seems to be every other reboot too, if that matters.

[Bug 1406024] [NEW] package brltty 5.0-2ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: el subproceso instalado el script post-installation devolvió el código de salida de error 1

2014-12-27 Thread Jake McGregor
Public bug reported:

I was attempting to upgrade from 14.04 to 14.10 when this error
appeared. For a while it haulted the upgrade, but I managed to get it
cleared up, likely caused by a dependency error. Two things to note; I
upgraded in a slightly different way by changing the release name in the
sources.list file then installing any updates. I've done this in the
past and it always seems to work fine. I'm fairly experienced with Linux
so I can deal with most errors. I also have my system language set to
Spanish, which might cause some of the bug details to be reported in
Spanish. Hopefully that won't be a problem...

have my interval set to 5 minutes, to rotate with pictures I have in a

I just installed the updates a few minute ago.

to reinstall due to kernel 4.4 not installing correctly. It also seems
interesting that I too have Spanish set as the main language, if that
even matters...

[Bug 798414] Re: update-initramfs should produce a more helpful error when there isn't enough free space

2016-02-11 Thread Jake McGregor
The only thing I can add here (and hopefully I'm not repeating anyone
here) is /boot claims to be about 75% full, and I have also seen it 100%
on another system of mine. It appears the problem is during the
transition between kernel 4.3 and 4.4. I use an encrypted partition on
both systems, one of which is a Surface Pro 3 using secure boot (if that
matters to anyone). I have only had one case where the system was unable
to boot because of this. Lucky for me I have a cloud backup. The others
I caught it in time. I was able to keep the system stable by fixing what
appeared to be a dependency error. Then again not rebooting might have
also helped. My guess is the Ubuntu installer didn't leave much space on
/boot, though normally all that is stored there is a few kernels and
related files. Everything appears fine now.

[Bug 1536790] [NEW] package brltty 5.3.1-1ubuntu3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2016-01-21 Thread Jake McGregor
Public bug reported:

This bug might be similar to #1533040, but I should note that this is
Ubuntu Mate running on a Raspberry Pi 2 (Arm v7), so I don't know if the
other bug is on the same CPU architecture or not. Feel free to mark it
as a duplicate if true. I was attempting to upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04, and
it appears as if I ran into some dependency errors. I'll see if I can
get them sorted out with aptitude in the mean time. System is still
stable and boots up fine, but I would imagine this will affect new
installs until the dependency error is resolved.

Here is the error output;

sudo aptitude upgrade
The following partially installed packages will be configured:
  brltty brltty-x11
No packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed.
0 packages upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Need to get 0 B of archives. After unpacking 0 B will be used.
Setting up brltty (5.3.1-1ubuntu3) ...
update-initramfs: deferring update (trigger activated)
update-rc.d: warning: start and stop actions are no longer supported; falling
back to defaults

That is where it stops. So far not even aptitude can fix this...

[Bug 1859276] [NEW] package samba-common-bin 2:4.11.1+dfsg-3ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: installed samba-common-bin package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2020-01-11 Thread Jake McGregor
Public bug reported:

I attempted to upgrade a system to focal for beta testing. Everything
except Samba upgraded fine and the system rebooted without issue. I
think this error was caused by my aging Samba config, which is probably
pushing 10 years old now and likely has parameters no longer supported
and was designed in my early high school days. Up until this upgrade, it
worked fine without issue.

What I found a little strange is how my outdated config was preventing
it from being properly installed. I was able to get the upgrade
completed by removing Samba, deleting my config file and replacing it
with a blank one, and applying the remaining upgrades. Once that was
done, Samba was installed again. I was able to generate a new Samba
config with Webmin and my systems can access the share just fine.

[Bug 1859276] Re: package samba-common-bin 2:4.11.1+dfsg-3ubuntu2 failed to install/upgrade: installed samba-common-bin package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2020-01-16 Thread Jake McGregor
Thanks for the input. I've been meaning to fix my Samba config, and this
only made it more obvious. For quite a while it's been 'If it ain't
broke, don't fix it.'. Well, obviously it was broken I just never
noticed. Even with the errors, my machines were still able to connect to
it fine, though I did notice version 1 support was dropped, which
affected a few old network printers. I've since fixed that issue. I have
updates installed via a Bash script on Pulseway, so I don't usually see
the output unless there's a problem with Apt that caused it to fail.

As for Webmin, I suspect it relies on Python 2, which I hear is steadily
being removed from Focal. Since it's still being maintained, this will
probably be fixed soon. While this has nothing to do with Samba, it was
the tool I was using to manage it. I saw it was removed a few days after
this was posted to fix a dependency issue.

[Bug 1893584] Re: ayatana-indicator-datetime-service crashed with signal 5 in g_object_new_valist()

2020-10-13 Thread Jake McGregor
I'll also add this same thing happens on armhf on Raspberry Pi 4 4GB as
well. It doesn't seem to negatively affect the rest of the system, but
I'll note I've changed some of the indicators that appear on the top
bar, so I'm likely not using the one that's crashing.

[Bug 1889967] [NEW] virtualbox-dkms 6.1.12-dfsg-8: virtualbox kernel module failed to build

2020-08-01 Thread Jake McGregor
Public bug reported:

My system had recently rebooted after a kernel update when this
appeared. VirtualBox was not in use before or after the reboot. This bug
appears similar to #1081307, but given it was posted 6 years ago, I'm
reluctant to mark it as the same bug. The error message and the fact I'm
using Nvidia graphics seems interesting, so I have to wonder if it's the
