[Bug 1452766] Re: [Browser] Cannot favorite site when it is loading

2015-08-17 Thread James Mulholland
** Description changed:

  Simple bug but annoying:

When a site is loading, the favourite star is not visible.

  Use-case:
you get a website from a friend, or you click a link on a page when the
network suddenly goes away. You want to save that page to look at it later,
when your connection comes back. This is not possible because you can only
bookmark pages after they're fully loaded.

  --- --- --- --- ---
  UX Comment:
- Having tried to reproduce the above use-case, I found the following:
- 1. Attempted to visit a URL with no active connection.
- 2. 'Network Error' page is shown.
- 3. User may still tap star to favourite entered URL.

- In the 'look at it later' use case described above, the user will still
- been able to favourite the URL for later use.
+ We should definitely let users bookmark pages before they finish
+ loading.

- In the absence of any other use-cases where this may cause a problem, I
- believe the current behaviour (intended to address the fact that 'one
- usually wants to bookmark the final location') is still valid.
+ I think in cases where the page isn't yet known, we can use the URL as
+ the bookmark name/ in place of a page title (I believe bookmarks
+ currently work this way already).
+
+ Recommended behaviour:
+
+ 1. Enter URL for large website with lots of images (e.g. theverge.com).
+ 2. Before page loads, switch to airplane mode.
+ 3. After a reasonable period (15-30 seconds) 'Network Error' page is shown.
+ 4. 'Favourite/Star' icon is available in address bar throughout.

[Bug 1387691] Re: Media Player should not be visible in the app scope and launcher

2015-08-03 Thread James Mulholland
** Description changed:

The mediaplayer is an 'auxiliary app' in the current design approach.
That means that its purpouse it playback media launched by other apps
(e.g Messaging) or scopes (e.g. Videos). It should not be launched from
  the App scopes.

However, the 'Update' section System Settings should still display it
when an update to mediaplayer is available.

  Current behaviour
  - Mediaplayer app displayed in App Scope, Launcher and Settings

  Desired behaviour
  - Mediaplayer app not displayed in App Scope or Launcher
  - Mediaplayer displayed in Settings > Update
+

+
+ UX Comment:

+ Fix appears partially released.
+
+ Implemented:
+ - Mediaplayer app not displayed in App Scope/ Ubuntu Store
+
+ Not implemented:

be 'pinned' to launcher, etc).

[Bug 1452766] Re: [Browser] Cannot favorite site when it is loading

2015-08-04 Thread James Mulholland
Thanks for clarifying Olivier.
So a revised use-case would be:

1. Attempt to visit a URL with an active connection, page begins loading.
2. Active connection is lost. Page never finishes loading & 'Network error'
page is not shown.
3. User can't ever tap star to favourite entered URL (as the star is never
shown).

I think this case means we should consider showing the star even while
loading, as well as when loading completes or is not possible:

- The site can be bookmarked with no active connection, from the 'Network
error' page (will be the URL as originally entered).
- The site can be bookmarked when connectivity is lost while loading/ page
loading cannot be completed (will be the URL as originally entered).
- The site can be bookmarked when loaded (will be the URL reached after the
user has been forwarded, for example to a mobile site, etc).

Sound reasonable?

[Bug 1452766] Re: [Browser] Cannot favorite site when it is loading

2015-08-04 Thread James Mulholland
Understood.

We should definitely let users bookmark pages before they finish
loading.

I think in cases where the page isn't yet known, we can use the URL as the
bookmark name/ in place of a page title (I believe bookmarks currently work
this way already).
--- --- ---
Also, when I experimented with this yesterday I found that the interval before
page loading is considered to have failed was very long (certainly long enough
to appear to 'never finish loading'):

1. Enter URL for large website with lots of images (e.g. theverge.com).
2. Before page loads, switch to airplane mode.
3. Page loading appears to continue without end.
4. 'Favourite/Star' icon is never shown in address bar

Recommended behaviour:
1. Enter URL for large website with lots of images (e.g. theverge.com).
2. Before page loads, switch to airplane mode.
3. After a reasonable period (15-30 seconds) 'Network Error' page is shown.
4. 'Favourite/Star' icon is available in address bar throughout.

[Bug 1456610] Re: [media-framework] Expected to be able to select picture in a full screen preview mode before sending it

2015-08-05 Thread James Mulholland
** Changed in: unity8 (Ubuntu)
   Status: Incomplete => Opinion

** Changed in: ubuntu-ux
   Status: Triaged => Opinion

** Changed in: ubuntu-ux
   Importance: Medium => Wishlist

** Summary changed:

- [media-framework] Expected to be able to select picture in a full screen
preview mode before sending it
+ [Gallery App/Content Hub] Expected to be able to select picture in a full
screen preview mode before sending it

** Description changed:

When testers tried to send picture via Gallery (event view) or Telegram
or Messaging app, it was difficult for them to select the one they
wanted to sent (especially when the pictures were similar). This is
because the pictures were not displayed in full sizes, and there was no
preview mode for them to check before committing to send.
+
+ --- --- --- --- ---
+ UX Comment:
+
+ Sending images (and other media) is handled via the Content Hub, the
+ previewing and selection of images is then handled by the App selected
+ via the Content Hub (Gallery, File Manager, etc).
+
+ This does not fall within the scope of Media-Services - If a user
+ attempts to send media via Messaging, Telegram or any other App they
+ will first have to select an App from the Content Hub, at which point
+ that Apps UI is used to preview/make a selections.
+
+ Additionally, the Gallery already currently supports full-screen preview
+ prior to selection (tap an image in the Gallery, tap the 'tick' in the
+ header to make the selection) or selection without previewing first (tap
+ the check-box at the tope right of an image without first previewing).

[Bug 1477312] Re: [browser] Should add a popup menu on the tab itself to open a new tab to the right of it (like chrome)

2015-08-05 Thread James Mulholland
** Description changed:

There is no way currently to open a tab to the right of an existing tab.
Pressing the "+" button always adds it at the end. It's desirable to be
able to add next to the current tab. Chrome solves that by putting a

  consider the same.

[Bug 1477314] Re: [browser] Bookmark Link action from popup menu should invoke bookmark folder UI or provide some sort of feedback that action succeeded

2015-08-05 Thread James Mulholland
** Description changed:

Now that we have a UI for creating bookmark folders, this should be
invoked when pressing "bookmark link" from context menu. Currently no ui
is shown and there is no feedback that the action succeeded.
+
+ --- --- --- ---
+ UX Comment:
+
+ I agree with Bill's suggestion:
+ "...we should basically use the same UI components that provides a field for
name, save in, and new folder and just not display it beneath the star or light
up the star."
+
+ We should also position the components to appear in the same place as
+ the contextual options menu that allows links to be bookmarked.
+
+ Additionally;
+ - Once a link has been bookmarked (either through the contextual options or
address bar), the option to 'Bookmark link' should no longer be present in the
contextual options menu associated with that link.
+ - Upon visiting a link bookmarked via contextual options, the star within the
address-bar should appear 'lit' (which doesn't appear to currently be the case).

[Bug 1464711] Re: [Browser] tabs indicator tab gets in the way of content on the page

2015-08-07 Thread James Mulholland
** Description changed:

In Ubuntu Touch, the web browser tab indicator overlays the content of
the web page being displayed and it makes some content on the page
inaccessible. For example: a website's footer links. For optimal web
browser usability, the web page content should not be obstructed.
+
+ --- --- --- ---
+ UX Comment:
+
+ We have a common behaviour for hiding the bottom edge when scrolling
+ begins up-ward begins.
+
+ I would recommend we apply the same behaviour to over-scrolling upward on
pages that are vertically small enough to not require scrolling.
+ In cases like the one described in this bug report, the user is highly likely
to attempt to scroll the page upward in order to see the footer links occluded
by the bottom-edge hint, which would cause the hint to become hidden.

[Bug 1440111] Re: [calendar] Reminder notifications are not integrated into system notifications

2015-08-07 Thread James Mulholland
** Description changed:

The calendar app does not use the standard notification system. You
can't find it in the "Notifications" area of System Settings, and it
uses its own notification sound regardless of what is set in "Sound".

Also, reminders are not muted when the phone is in silent mode (I guess
  it's related).

I'm on bq Aquaris, r20 and with the latest calendar-app.
+
+ --- --- --- ---
+ UX Comment:
+
+ Calendar Notifications need to be overhauled:
+ -- Calendar Notifications are displayed for too brief a period and should
conform to the same timing as other notifications.
+
+ -- Calendar Notifications are not currently appearing in the
+ notification tray within indicators and should be.
+
+ -- Calendar Notification title is misleading ('Alarm') and should make
+ clear that the notification relates to a calendar event ('Event') and
+ not a alarm-clock event.
+
+ -- Calendar Notification's should NOT override silent mode (unlike
+ clock-alarms) although the notification should still be displayed,
+ appear in the notification within indicators and cause the device to
+ vibrate (if enabled) - This is accepted/common behaviour for
+ notifications of this type on mobile.

[Bug 1457915] Re: [Browser] No way to navigate both in private and 'clear' mode at the same time

2015-08-07 Thread James Mulholland

'classic' mode at the same time, and navigate on both.

Also, I expect on desktop that private mode is opened in a new window,
  as for all desktop browser
+
+ --- --- --- ---
+ UX Comment:
+
+ For windowed environments (once multi-window mode is supported) we
+ should open a new instance of the browser App for Private Mode.
+
+ For mobile we would not want to introduce mixed private and non private mode
tabs in the tab spread.
+ That said, we should perhaps reconsider our current approach where exiting
private mode causes all private mode tabs to be closed (after confirmation) and
consider allowing private mode tabs to persist within private mode until the
private mode tab itself is closed by the user.
+
+ This would conform to the behaviour observed in/ expected from the vast
+ majority of mobile browsers and address the issues highlighted in this

[Bug 1411187] Re: [clock] Add option to not have snooze

2015-07-07 Thread James Mulholland
** Description changed:

  Snooze is evil.

I suggest to add to snooze dropdown menu in the option the voice "No
  snooze" or something like this

- UX Solution
+ GV - UX Solution
I've added the option to turn snooze off when editing an alarm, plus I've
added an option 'Don't snooze in settings'

https://docs.google.com/a/canonical.com/presentation/d/1JvDyhsW17d1-Mz8OY1YMBKwfRI2z9qgyRjbujEsxEMk/edit#slide=id.g34303b1ce_2_11
+
+ [UX Comment]
+ As it seems unlikely that we will be able to implement snooze on/off & snooze
duration for individual alarms, but do have an application-wide setting that
allows snooze duration to be set (but not disabled), I'd recommend the options
relating to snooze in application settings be changed to the following:
+
+ - No snooze
+ - 5 minutes
+ - 10 minutes
+ - 15 minutes
+
+ This way the list is still short (four options, as it is currently) but
+ the options provided are likely to be more useful (current 2 minute
+ snooze doesn't seem very useful, nor does the difference between 4 mins
+ and 5 min snooze periods).

[Bug 1367822] Re: [Scopes] Process required to pin a shortcut to the launcher does not fit users mental model

2015-03-06 Thread James Mulholland
The original request came directly to us during a Sprint in 2014 and the
intention was that the 'pin to launcher' button would slot straight into
the 'action' area (i.e. the place for buttons in app previews) as
described in the toolkit documentation since 2013.

That said, Rodney makes a good point - all the more so considering the
move toward convergence/ parity for the platform across form factors
that is currently picking up steam.

Setting this to 'in progress' while we await the outcome of ongoing
discussions regarding the launcher/apps scopes.

[Bug 1238979] Re: [Scopes] Scope result models are cleared on updates

2015-03-06 Thread James Mulholland
As Cimi said, graphical changes to the UI are likely to introduce more
visual noise/clutter and make things less clear (and in the case of slow
connections or devices, reduce utility).

Michi's suggestion ("...enforce that an existing item cannot change
physical location when a new item arrives") would give a far more
stable/ predictable user experience and is, in my opinion, the way to
go.

[Bug 1357053] Re: [Launcher] home button should reset dash department

2015-03-06 Thread James Mulholland
I agree that the department should reset to the root department when
navigating back to the Apps scope; both in the interest of utility as
well as in order to be consistent with how we handle search results
(which are cleared when navigating away from a scope).

Interestingly, departments are currently not cleared for Apps (as well
as other Scopes) when navigating away/too a Scope. However, if a user
selects a department and then conducts a search, navigating away/too the
scope clears the search AND resets the department (tested in the Amazon
and Ebay Scopes). Additionally, opening the department drop-down shows
the previously selected department as still being applied.

I would propose that Apps is a special case where we should clear
searches and reset departments (including within the department drop-
dow) when a user navigates away from the scope.

All other scopes should preserve both the department and (where
relevant) filters, but clear searches which are easily accessible by
beginning a new search and selecting from the recent search list. I will
raise a new bug for this.

[Bug 1429214] [NEW] [Scopes] Departments not behaving consistently when navigating too/from a Scope

2015-03-06 Thread James Mulholland
Public bug reported:

Departments are currently not cleared for Apps (as well as other Scopes) when

conducts a search, navigating away/too the scope clears the search AND resets
the department (tested in the Amazon and Ebay Scopes).

Recommendation:

All other scopes should preserve both the department and (where

[Bug 1516245] Re: Full URL of page not shown unless user clicks on it

2015-11-18 Thread James Mulholland
This is a largely matter of personal preference and not a bug - if you
look at other mobile browsers you'll see both approaches being used by
different products, e.g. :

- Opera Mobile Browser & - Safari Mobile Browser: Only host name is shown
- Chrome Mobile Browser & Firefox Mobile Browser : As much as possible from the
*beginning* of a URL is shown (so if a URL is longer than 14-20 characters,
only part of the host portion of the URL is visible anyway).

Thank you for taking the time to give us your opinion on this (we have
'opinion' and 'wishlist' categories for these sorts of items in future, as they
are not bugs)

[Bug 1491934] Re: Improve webapps navigation UI

2015-09-08 Thread James Mulholland
My understanding is that the current web-app navigation UI was intended to be
aligned as closely as possible with the browser:

Using radial menus on the bottom edge has the potential to introduce its own
disadvantages, so may not be a 'quick-fix' to this;
- the introduction of additional steps to navigating (the first of which is an
edge-gesture)
- making navigation less immediately discoverable
- discouraging the use of the bottom-edge by developers for anything else if
the expectation becomes 'that's where navigation occurs' (when we typically
encourage that the bottom-edge be used for the most
critical/interesting/exciting action available)
- etc.

Could you provide the reports you mentioned and/ or some illustration
(e.g. screenshots) of the problem you're describing to help us
understand the issue? The hide/ reveal Navigation UI pattern that is
used by web-apps has long been present in the browser, scopes, contacts
& telephony, etc - Just about anything with a 'header' (see comparative
screenshots below).
