[Blueprint encrypted-swap-by-default] Encrypted Swap By Default
Blueprint changed by Jerone Young: Whiteboard changed to: (steve.langasek) When I migrated my laptop from hardy to intrepid, I turned on encrypted swap at the same time (swap LV on top of LVM+encryption). Anything that makes heavy use of swap on my desktop now brings the whole system to its knees. Please be cognizant of performance issues when implementing this - I fear this may be untenable as a default for desktop systems. (Roderick Greening) It would never be expected to encrypt a swap file which exists in a LVM encrypted drive. Given that to build a LVM system, you have to use the alternate cd, the user would be in total control of these choices. Via the regular live CD/DVD, LVM is not a option (that I recall), so encrypting the swap by default should not be problematic. (Paul Klapperich) As far as encrypted swap working with hibernate, it sounds like this goes nicely on computers that have a TPM as per the second link. I don't have one to test. For computers without a tpm, I don't know how ecryptfs works, but for luks we could perhaps use a pam module to hold the user account password for the duration of the login and set it as an alternate key for the luks swap partition (which previously had a random key only) if the user initiates a hibernate. Alternatively a global swap password could be created instead of (or somehow in addition to) random key encryption, but that's an extra password that now all users of the system would be required to know. It would, however, allow a resume from hibernate followed by a switch user if the person who hibernated is not present. (Przemysław Kulczycki) Will this block the system's ability to write crash dumps to swap partition and to save it from swap partition to file after a reboot? (Jerone Young) How can we start talking about something like this being by default when it has not even had field testing. If Jaunty is about stability this is not the way to go. Also since (from what I know) this is not being done in the kernel but rather in userspace, which is going to cause big performance issues when writing to swap. Another thing is where are the keys kept to decrypt the swap? How is a machine going to wake up from hibernation? This also will not work with the grub fast hibernation patches. Not a good idea to do at this time. -- Encrypted Swap By Default https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/encrypted-swap-by-default -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

linux-backports-modules 2.6.27-6.1 appears to fix this issue. I've run some large file transfer tests that easily caused the iwlagn module that comes with the kernel now to crash. But now running those tests with linux-backports-modules installed I no longer see the issue, and it doesn't crash at all. Fix is now upstream. But will be a bit till network-manager update for Interpid to include it. For those looking. A temporary fix is to remove the setting the APN. Actually just remove everything except for the phone number that you must dial. This works for branded cards as all the data is already in the card (or sim card). But may not work for unbranded cards. So for ATT branded cards all you need is the Phone number field filled in with *99#. I've retested the patch. It definitely is the fix as I am using my Sierra 881 right now. This is a feature of metacity (which is the windows manager for Gnome). 2) Now you open a video in vlc 3) Now go to the top bar in vlc, go to Video-Always on Top 3.5) initiate option 4) Now try dragging another window over the vlc. If the vlc window is not on top of the other window, this is an indication that allways on top is broken for vlc. The reason for this is vlc depends on wxwidgets in Linux. There is a bug in 2.6 of wxwidgets 2.8 fixes it. Hope that should clear up any confusion. This appears to only effect thinkpads using the Intel x3100 graphics. [Bug 52711] Re: git-core requires curl but doesn't download it
What shocks me is how non user friendly all this is. Just ridiculous there is even an argument over this. For any other package. You install all the dependencies so that package is fully functional. NOT...oh it does something, but you need to install this other thing ... but oh you had no idea you where going to need this since nothing really told you (sorry we do not all read a debs recommended list .. why because the functionality in the package should work... synaptic doesn't pop up a recommended list before installing something). There are actually cases where this becomes a problem. As some use workstations that they do not have access to install things. So if they tell the admin to install git-core and they need to pull an http tree, it going then another hassle to install curl too. But this is just one case. What about automated scripts and such...where honestly if git- clone is there it should work .. right? [Bug 198476] Re: [REGRESSION] Impossible to change LCD brightness on Thinkpad R61/T61/X61
So going through the kernel log at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/ This appears to broke in 2.6.24-11.17 with one of the following entries that was pulled from upstream: * ACPI: video: Rationalise ACPI backlight implementation -- This is most likely the culprit * ACPI: video: Ignore ACPI video devices that aren't present in hardware This is currently broken in 2.6.25 (which I assume where these patches were pulled from). Now remember it works with 2.6.25-10.16. So what we know: - This effects only Thinkpads with Intel x3100 - This broke with 2.6.24-11.17 update - There is a really bad work around using thinkpad acpi ... please read kernel source/Documentation/thinkpa-acpi.txt It says and I quote .. When display backlight brightness controls are available through the standard ACPI interface, it is best to use it instead of this direct ThinkPad-specific interface. * So you should not be using backlight= thinkpad_acpi option * The problem is the ACPI interface is broken, so please stop mentioning it in this bug - Also even though you see the Gnome backlight indicator slowly going up and down, the actual backlight is not changing. -- [REGRESSION] Impossible to change LCD brightness on Thinkpad R61/T61/X61 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/198476 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 183682] Re: Add better behavior fix for bluetooth with Lenovo Thinkpads (Code included)
Actually that is correct. The reason you use grep -i -n1 -q disabled $BLUETOOTH is that if you cat you get: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/jerone# cat /proc/acpi/ibm/bluetooth status: disabled commands: enable, disable The first line will allways be the status. But the 2nd line is the commands. We only want to see the first line. Also havig FN+F5 toggle both bluetooh wireless is extremely confusing to users as there is an rf_kill switch if you want to kill it. After reading the new man pages and some discussion on ibm-acpi mailing list masking off hot keys is not nesscary. [Bug 194679] Re: PATCH to fix thinkpad acpi hotkey mask for Thinkpad T61/X61/R61 and all other Thinkpads
So according to Henrique the thinkpad-acpi maintainer .. this patch needs to change. Ubuntu should not have been messing with the hotkey mask at all ...as this is all handled in the thinkpad-acpi code. His response can be found here: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_name=20080223195052.GB5123 %40khazad-dum.debian.net So this patch should actually be (will test and see that everything is ok): Signed-off-by: Jerone Young [EMAIL PROTECTED] diff -r 4b27ca13af80 thinkpad_acpi.modprobe --- a/thinkpad_acpi.modprobeSat Feb 23 16:18:42 2008 -0600 +++ b/thinkpad_acpi.modprobeSat Feb 23 16:18:59 2008 -0600 @@ -1,1 +1,1 @@ options thinkpad_acpi hotkey=enable,0xff -options thinkpad_acpi hotkey=enable,0x8f experimental=1 +options thinkpad_acpi experimental=1 -- PATCH to fix thinkpad acpi hotkey mask for Thinkpad T61/X61/R61 and all other Thinkpads https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/194679 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 194679] Re: PATCH to fix thinkpad acpi hotkey mask for Thinkpad T61/X61/R61 and all other Thinkpads
Doing some research I have found that these options where actually needed in Gutsy as the version of thinkpad-acpi that comes in the Gutsy kernel does not have the detection abilities. Now with the Hardy kernel the thinkpad-acpi can now automatically (and correctly) detect keys for thinkpads. So these options should be removed to thinkpad-acpi .. should be removed. -- PATCH to fix thinkpad acpi hotkey mask for Thinkpad T61/X61/R61 and all other Thinkpads https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/194679 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 194679] Re: PATCH to fix thinkpad acpi hotkey mask for Thinkpad T61/X61/R61 and all other Thinkpads
I did testing and it works! But I think we also need to remove experimental=1 as this is also something that is not wanted anymore (unless of course you have a very experimental feature needed...don't think we want to enable unstable code by default). Given this I have spun one last patch based on this and what Henrique (the thinkpad-acpi maintainer has stated): Description: This patch removes bad options from the thinkpad-acpi driver that are now handled by the thinkpad-acpi driver and greatly imporves functionality across all thinkpads, as well as does not cut on unstable code by default. For a better description: This fixes masking of hot keys FN+F5 FN+F7 for Lenovo Thinkpads and all other Thinkpads. All hot keys should be enabled by default. For the link above, I was pointing out how they had to do the same in thinkpad_acpi.modprobe to unmask the keys (they only needed for there FN+F7 event they create). What they do , that should be a seprate bug is they add an even file for the eject event (FN+F9 .. which was not being blocked)...so that you have an eject event. I'll file a seprate bug for this.
