[Blueprint encrypted-swap-by-default] Encrypted Swap By Default

2008-12-11 Thread Jerone Young
Blueprint changed by Jerone Young:

Whiteboard changed to:

(steve.langasek) When I migrated my laptop from hardy to intrepid, I
turned on encrypted swap at the same time (swap LV on top of
LVM+encryption). Anything that makes heavy use of swap on my desktop
now brings the whole system to its knees. Please be cognizant of
performance issues when implementing this - I fear this may be untenable
as a default for desktop systems.

(Roderick Greening) It would never be expected to encrypt a swap file
which exists in a LVM encrypted drive. Given that to build a LVM system,
you have to use the alternate cd, the user would be in total control of
these choices. Via the regular live CD/DVD, LVM is not a option (that I
recall), so encrypting the swap by default should not be problematic.

(Paul Klapperich) As far as encrypted swap working with hibernate, it
sounds like this goes nicely on computers that have a TPM as per the
second link. I don't have one to test. For computers without a tpm, I
don't know how ecryptfs works, but for luks we could perhaps use a pam
module to hold the user account password for the duration of the login
and set it as an alternate key for the luks swap partition (which
previously had a random key only) if the user initiates a hibernate.
Alternatively a global swap password could be created instead of (or
somehow in addition to) random key encryption, but that's an extra
password that now all users of the system would be required to know. It
would, however, allow a resume from hibernate followed by a switch user
if the person who hibernated is not present.

(Przemysław Kulczycki) Will this block the system's ability to write
crash dumps to swap partition and to save it from swap partition to file
after a reboot?

(Jerone Young) How can we start talking about something like this being
by default when it has not even had field testing. If Jaunty is about
stability this is not the way to go. Also since (from what I know) this
is not being done in the kernel but rather in userspace, which is going
to cause big performance issues when writing to swap. Another thing is
where are the keys kept to decrypt the swap? How is a machine going to
wake up from hibernation? This also will not work with the grub fast
hibernation patches. Not a good idea to do at this time.

[Blueprint encrypted-home-directory] Encrypted Home Directory

2008-12-11 Thread Jerone Young

Whiteboard changed to:

Beta available for Jaunty!

For testing, see:

To Do:
 * merge ecryptfs-utils-67 into Jaunty
 * get adduser patch sponsored into Jaunty
 * patch the server installer for adduser --encrypt-home option
 * patch the graphical installer for adduser --encrypt-home option
 * patch system-tools-backends for adduser --encrypt-home option

[Bug 67854] Re: Edgy: Window Tray Icon Still Incorrect

*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 68180 ***

The question, is why not just release a package to fix it. Like it or
not it does create a usability issue also may affect relations with
the Mozilla group over the Firefox trademark issue (why the icon was
changed). This is a simple fix. It's probably best to fix this as soon
as possible.

[Bug 276990] Re: iwlagn causes kernel panic on 802.11n wifi

2008-10-12 Thread Jerone Young
linux-backports-modules 2.6.27-6.1 appears to fix this issue. I've run
some large file transfer tests that easily caused the iwlagn module that
comes with the kernel now to crash. But now running those tests with
linux-backports-modules installed I no longer see the issue, and it
doesn't crash at all.

I think most would prefer a non crashing module be apart of the regular
kernel and not backports though. Hopefully later this week I'll have
time to get a serial cable and see the crash

I was unable to get the kernel dump from the iwlagn driver as I really
need a thinkpad docking station and getting kernel output out of USB
serial ports seems like an impossible task.

2008-10-24 Thread Jerone Young
Sorry for all the posts.

So the problem is still there and the patch does need to be applied. BUT
there is a new profile for network manager called Auto Mobile Broadband

problem is skipped.

Patch still needs to be applied. But this is a nice work around if your
card already has all the provider data stored in it.

[Bug 282207] Re: [Sierra] NM 0.7 does not set APN for ATT 3G connection

2008-10-26 Thread Jerone Young
Fix is now upstream. But will be a bit till network-manager update for
Interpid to include it.

For those looking. A temporary fix is to remove the setting the APN.
Actually just remove everything except for the phone number that you
must dial. This works for branded cards as all the data is already in
the card (or sim card). But may not work for unbranded cards.

So for ATT branded cards all you need is the Phone number field filled
in with *99#. Leave all other fields blank and it will just connect.

Also what does /var/log/daemon.log show after it fails. It should say
failed setting APN. The problem is someone threw in spaces into the APN

No the problem is not the it is using ttyUSB0. This is what the ppp
scripts from Sierra wireless use. The problem is the spaces used in the
APN setting line. As in my patch above once I took out the spaces it
just worked!

This is exactly how it is done in the Sierra PPP scripts and any other dialer

2008-10-23 Thread Jerone Young
I've retested the patch. It definitely is the fix as I am using my
Sierra 881 right now.

I think it is very very important that this make it into Intrepid, as
Sierra cards working is sort of a make or break feature with the
majority of U.S.A ATT users using them.

Looking around the net this command should have NEVER had spaces in it.
Someone probably thought that they wouldn't hurt .. but they do.

Here is an example chart:

Confirmed fix is now in Intrepid. Just upgraded my laptop today to make

As for ttyUSB2 it looks like you can issue commands to the card while ttyUSB0
is has the data connection.
Here is a quoted from sierra's site:
http://www.sierrawireless.com/faq/ShowFAQ.aspx?ID=1076

If you are using the AC881, MC8781, MC8780 issue AT commands or queries
to /dev/ttyUSB0. AT commands can be used while a data connection is
established on /dev/ttyUSB2.

2008-10-24 Thread Jerone Young
Actually that quote is backward as the one's before it read:
If you are using the AC875, MC8755, MC8765, MC8775 issue AT commands or
queries to /dev/ttyUSB2. AT commands can be used while a data connection is
established on /dev/ttyUSB0.

I have a feeling this is mis documented on the website fore the AC881.
And it should read:

If you are using the AC881, MC8781, MC8780 issue AT commands or queries
to /dev/ttyUSB2. AT commands can be used while a data connection is
established on /dev/ttyUSB0

[Bug 205325] [NEW] vlc being compiled with wxwidgets 2.6 .. should use 2.8 to fix allway on top in Hardy

2008-03-22 Thread Jerone Young
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vlc

The allways on top function in vlc does not work. This is a bug in
wxwidgets 2.6 (libxgtk2.6 is the lib being used). Though this is fixed
in 2.8. Both 2.6 2.8 come with Ubuntu hardy (as well as gutsy, I think
edgy too). Yet vlc is still being compiled with 2.6. This should be
corrected and vlc should be compiled with version 2.8 to fix this issue.

[Bug 27667] Re: xresprobe drops highest available resolution on certain lcd's

2008-03-22 Thread Jerone Young
@Jay
This is not the same issue. So if you are getting the correct resolution
then you are fine from that stand point. Now shifting to the right is odd.

If you using VGA and it is shifted to the right then try auto
calibrating your monitor.

If that does not help then this could be an issue with the Xorg radeon
driver, do you see the same behavior when you try it with DVI?

[Bug 205325] Re: vlc being compiled with wxwidgets 2.6 .. should use 2.8 to fix allway on top in Hardy

2008-03-23 Thread Jerone Young
I am refering to option in vlc. On the top bar Video-Always-on-Top ..
you need to be playing a video for this option to take affect. Currently
it will not keep the vlc window on top.

Now I just noticed that Gnome now has always-on-top for apps again
(whoot!)..but this still does not full solve this issue (more so works
around it). So those using any other windows manager will see this.

[Bug 205325] Re: vlc being compiled with wxwidgets 2.6 .. should use 2.8 to fix allway on top in Hardy

2008-03-23 Thread Jerone Young
Yes so to add on to my last comment and pervent confusion.

1) Ensure that in the left hand corner (where the app icon is). That allways
on top is not checked. This is a feature of metacity (which is the windows
manager for Gnome).
2) Now you open a video in vlc
3) Now go to the top bar in vlc, go to Video-Always on Top
3.5) initiate option
4) Now try dragging another window over the vlc.

If the vlc window is not on top of the other window, this is an
indication that allways on top is broken for vlc. The reason for this
is vlc depends on wxwidgets in Linux. There is a bug in 2.6 of wxwidgets
 2.8 fixes it.

Hope that should clear up any confusion. Just post if you need more
info.

[Bug 198476] Re: [REGRESSION] Impossible to change LCD brightness on Thinkpad R61/T61/X61

2008-03-24 Thread Jerone Young
This appears to only effect thinkpads using the Intel x3100 graphics.

I have a Thinkpad 61p with Nvidia Quadro and the brightness control
works (updating today's packages), using the proprietary nvidia driver.
But when I try my other Thinkpad T61 with Intel x3100 it does not work.

Also using thinkpad acpi option is a bad work around for the real issue.
This worked and then broke with an ubuntu kernel update (see my other
comments).

[Bug 52711] Re: git-core requires curl but doesn't download it

2008-04-15 Thread Jerone Young
What shocks me is how non user friendly all this is. Just ridiculous
there is even an argument over this.

For any other package. You install all the dependencies so that package
is fully functional. NOT...oh it does something, but you need to
install this other thing ... but oh you had no idea you where going to
need this since nothing really told you (sorry we do not all read a debs
recommended list .. why because the functionality in the package should
work... synaptic doesn't pop up a recommended list before installing
something).

There are actually cases where this becomes a problem. As some use
workstations that they do not have access to install things. So if they
tell the admin to install git-core and they need to pull an http tree,
it going then another hassle to install curl too. But this is just one
case. What about automated scripts and such...where honestly if git-
clone is there it should work .. right?

Most the git trees I push and pull from are http which is why I hit this
issue.

I'll try and fine the hardy kernel git tree and see if I can find the

[Bug 205325] Re: vlc being compiled with wxwidgets 2.6 .. should use 2.8 to fix allway on top in Hardy

I was looking at the file:
vlc_0.8.6.release.e+x264svn20071224+faad2.6.1-0ubuntu2.diff

And in the file debian/control, under Build-Depends: . You need to

FYI.. I noticed this in the change log. There have been updates to vlc since
this, but be aware of this bug:

[Bug 198476] Re: [REGRESSION] Impossible to change LCD brightness on Thinkpad R61/T61/X61

2008-03-29 Thread Jerone Young
So going through the kernel log at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/

This appears to broke in 2.6.24-11.17 with one of the following entries that
was pulled from upstream:
  * ACPI: video: Rationalise ACPI backlight implementation -- This is most
likely the culprit
  * ACPI: video: Ignore ACPI video devices that aren't present in hardware

This is currently broken in 2.6.25 (which I assume where these patches
were pulled from).

Now remember it works with 2.6.25-10.16.

So what we know:

 - This effects only Thinkpads with Intel x3100
 - This broke with 2.6.24-11.17 update
 - There is a really bad work around using thinkpad acpi ...
please read kernel source/Documentation/thinkpa-acpi.txt
It says and I quote .. When display backlight brightness controls
are available
through the standard ACPI interface, it is best to use it instead of
this direct
 ThinkPad-specific interface.
* So you should not be using backlight= thinkpad_acpi option
* The problem is the ACPI interface is broken, so please stop
mentioning it in this bug
 - Also even though you see the Gnome backlight indicator slowly going up
and down, the actual backlight is not changing.

@Micheal also ensure you have the latest bios
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/BIOS_Upgrade

Also here is a picture of the thinkpad T60 keyboard (notice Fn+F4 is suspend).
Fn+F5 is wireless toggle. So it switches bluetooth and wireless on and off.

http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/9328.jpg

It sends the exact same acpi events and the Thinkpad T61. So if you run
acpi_listen and you see the events there is no issue.

I would suggest though you run a fresh daily build live cd from here:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/

This problem is most likely your install. As it should work.

[Bug 183682] Re: Add better behavior fix for bluetooth with Lenovo Thinkpads (Code included)

2008-02-29 Thread Jerone Young
Actually that is correct. The reason you use grep -i -n1 -q disabled
$BLUETOOTH is that if you
cat you get:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/home/jerone# cat /proc/acpi/ibm/bluetooth
status: disabled
commands: enable, disable

The first line will allways be the status. But the 2nd line is the
commands. We only want to see the first line.

Also havig FN+F5 toggle both bluetooh wireless is extremely confusing
to users as there is an rf_kill switch if you want to kill it.

Now under Windows FN+F5 calls up a program that you then choose if you
want to enable/disable bluetooth.

Most perfer FN+F5 just be for bluetooth. There is another bugzilla with people

fixes for me (Drop thinkpad-acpi.modprobe) .. that seem more important.
Hotkey stuff can easily be fixed by users if need be...sigh..sad that's
it's come to this point..seeing how these bugs have had ample time.

[Bug 183682] Re: Add better behavior fix for bluetooth with Lenovo Thinkpads (Code included)

2008-02-17 Thread Jerone Young
It would be awsome if you could do this for me. My Hardy install seems
to be in total disarry, and it will be about a week or two before I get
a chance to do a reinstall. Big Thanks for doing this for me (who ever
ends up doing it) ;-)

There is another thing you should know (not that the patch should not be
included) . But in the latest firmware by Lenovo 2.09 (released
12/27/07) for Thinkpad T61/R61 Lenovo , has now disabled the acpi event
for the FN+F5 under Linux. Firmwares before it do it, but Lenovo keeps
changing things..this will possibly be reenabled in later firmware, but
Lenovo keeps switching things. Just so you know if anyone is trying to
test.

[Bug 177570] Re: [hardy] two batteries display when left clicking on g-p-m

2008-02-18 Thread Jerone Young
Yes the problem has been fixed upstream (as I have tested with upstream
hal and seen this go away). But the hal package in hardy
(0.5.10-4ubunt6) does not fix this issue. I am using a fully update
machine with all the latest hardy packages as of today (the 18th of
Febuary) and it appears that everything that was need to fix this issue
in hal was not included.

I shouldn't be the only one seeing this now ?? Is it somehow fixed for
everyone else ?? Maybe I need to do a fresh clean install if this is the
case. Using a Thinkpad T61p.

2008-02-07 Thread Jerone Young
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 177570 ***

I'm seeing the same thing with my Lenovo Thinkpad T61 on Hardy.

I see the problem now
Battery1 is reading /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state

Battery2 is reading /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/info

But there is ONLY 1 real Battery. It appears somebody just put some dumb
code into gnome-power-manager.

Actually looking more into this along with the gnome bug that is linked

AC3 Passthrough currently, and it has yet to be fixed. If you want to
use AC 3 Passthrough you have to change the backend of Totem to Xine.

A workaround is to use the xine backend. So you install totem-xine
from apt and launch totem-xine . This is totem using xine for the
backend. I just tested it and AC3 passes fine now. Hopefully gstreamer
will get it together with AC3 passthrough.

[Bug 190393] [NEW] Fix for Speaker swtich not on by default with Thinkpad T61/X61

2008-02-09 Thread Jerone Young
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: alsa-utils

On Thinkpad T61/X61 or any other notebook using the AD1984 sound card.
There is a lot of confusion as no noise comes out of the speaker even
though PCM is at Maximum volume. The issue here is that the AD1984 now
has a switch for Headphone Speaker. But having this switch cut on
in the init script this resolves this issue and has sound coming out of
the speakers head phone jack.

Has been tested and will finally have these just work on Thinkpad T61.

This clears up a lot of issues, just googling around you can see users
need this problem fixed.

This patch is for /etc/init.d/alsa-utils:

This is fixed, but there has not been a HAL release cut with the fix. It
is in git so you can go here and compile HAL and see that it now does
work as it should (showing the right amount of battrie(s)).

If you want to see this fixed run these commands:

1) sudo apt-get install git-core build-essential
2) sudo apt-get build-dep hal
3) git clone git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/hal
* Now go into hal dir
4) ./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr
5) make
6) sudo make install
* Now reboot your machine and log back in. You will see the battery is now
reporting right again.

After reading the new man pages and some discussion on ibm-acpi mailing

causing problems for newer Lenovo based Thinkpads T,R, X series. All hot

[Bug 194679] Re: PATCH to fix thinkpad acpi hotkey mask for Thinkpad T61/X61/R61 and all other Thinkpads

2008-03-07 Thread Jerone Young
So according to Henrique the thinkpad-acpi maintainer .. this patch
needs to change. Ubuntu should not have been messing with the hotkey
mask at all ...as this is all handled in the thinkpad-acpi code. His
response can be found here:

http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_name=20080223195052.GB5123

2008-03-07 Thread Jerone Young
Doing some research I have found that these options where actually
needed in Gutsy as the version of thinkpad-acpi that comes in the Gutsy
kernel does not have the detection abilities. Now with the Hardy kernel
the thinkpad-acpi can now automatically (and correctly) detect keys for
thinkpads. So these options should be removed to thinkpad-acpi .. should
be removed.

2008-03-07 Thread Jerone Young
I did testing and it works! But I think we also need to remove
experimental=1 as this is also something that is not wanted anymore
(unless of course you have a very experimental feature needed...don't
think we want to enable unstable code by default). Given this I have
spun one last patch based on this and what Henrique (the thinkpad-acpi
maintainer has stated):

Description:
This patch removes bad options from the thinkpad-acpi driver that are now
handled by the thinkpad-acpi driver and greatly imporves functionality across
all thinkpads, as well as does not cut on unstable code by default.

2008-03-07 Thread Jerone Young
For a better description:

This fixes masking of hot keys FN+F5 FN+F7 for Lenovo Thinkpads and

For the link above, I was pointing out how they had to do the same in
thinkpad_acpi.modprobe to unmask the keys (they only needed for there
FN+F7 event they create).

What they do , that should be a seprate bug is they add an even file for
the eject event (FN+F9 .. which was not being blocked)...so that you
have an eject event. I'll file a seprate bug for this. As I want to
crate files for eject FN+Space bar (which is magnify).

Thanks.

[Bug 198476] Re: Impossible to change LCD brightness on Thinkpad R61i

2008-03-05 Thread Jerone Young
something screwy is going on is going on .. the acpi events though. It is not
giving one to one raito on the event generated.
The key generates 2 events:
vidoe LCD0 086
ibm/hotkey HKEY 080 5010

The problem is when you use acpi_listen these are not coming in one to one. The
one we care about is
ibm/hotkey HKEY 080 5010

I will try to build a gutsy kernel with thinkpad_acpi v.0.20 later ..
the version that comes with gutsy is v0.17.

[Bug 183707] Re: Add ioctl error checking close file descriptor in acpi_fake

2008-03-07 Thread Jerone Young
These patches are need to acpi_fakekey as the case (I just found out
today) , if a user and not root runs the acpi_fakekey command will
allways return with 0 (success) even though a user cannot make an ioctl
call. These patches need to be applied to acpi_fakekey.

- Add ioctl error checking close file descriptor in acpi_fake

anyone paying attention to this bug. There are 2 patches here that will
greatly help if things fail. I'm surprised that acpi-support bugs seem
to be falling on deaf ears.

[Bug 194679] Re: PATCH to fix thinkpad acpi hotkey mask for Thinkpad T61/X61/R61 and all other Thinkpads

2008-03-11 Thread Jerone Young
In gutsy it should just be:

hotkey=enable,0xff

The issue in gusty is it has a very old version of thinkpad acpi that
didn't have the detection code needed. While in hardy this isn't even
needed. Which is why we are trying to drop the thinkpad_acpi.modprobe
from hardy.

[Bug 28177] Re: [totem-gstreamer] AC3 pass-through option not selectable

2008-02-06 Thread Jerone Young
I have also recently noticed this problem with totem. AC3 work fine
using VLC .. but not with Totem. I'm using Hardy builds and the problem
still exists. I'll look into this and see if I can fix it. It's most
likely a problem with gstreamer or how Totem is trying to pass AC3 over
gstreamer.
