I concur. In addition even if I run /etc/init.d/avahi-daemon start as

simply issuing avahi-daemon works just fine.

[Bug 58797] [Edgy] Upgrade from Dapper - no gnome sounds

2006-09-03 Thread Joey Stanford
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-desktop

Greetings,

This one is a weird one for me. Upgrade from Dapper to Edgy. ALSA
works. Gnome Sound Preferences' Device Test Tab tests work (with
sound). Sounds on the Sounds tab do not work even with all items
checked and proper device selected.

Sound has also stopped in Cedega.

I took the liberty of reinstalling all the alsa packages, regenerating
.asoundrc.asoundconf, and even generated /etc/asound.names with no
luck.

There are NO sound errors anywhere in /var/log which is very peculiar.

Thanks...

[Bug 58424] Re: Edgy upgrade fails using update-manager.

2006-09-04 Thread Joey Stanford
I've already upgraded via hand (dist-upgrade) and manually removed
python and the above mentioned libraries. For me there is a current
dbus issue though when I run the command:

2006-06-28 Thread Joey Stanford
I have also experienced this problem (as Stan has described) but with a
fresh install of Dapper alt install. Everything works according to plan
(and according to the wiki entry) but then I fall into the same pit: It
kept telling me the filesystem didn't exist until I tried mount -t ext3
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol03 /mnt/ubuntu and it mounted. So it isn't
detecting the filesystem type, needs to be told what it is, and is
giving a misleading message that the root filesystem simply doesn't
exist.

[Bug 64013] Re: edgy: ooffice crashing x

2006-10-10 Thread Joey Stanford
This is interesting Matthew. I have a gut feeling this is related to
your X configuration and not OpenOffice. However the valid question is
why does this happen only with OpenOffice. Would you be able to
reconfigure X to default and try again?

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Perhaps with a full update as well:

e.g.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get -y -f dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get -y autoremove
sudo apt-get autoclean

If this still happens we'll need backtraces and valgrinds on both X and
OpenOffice. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash

You might also want to run memtest86 from the Grub menu just to make
certain it's not a memory issue.

2006-10-11 Thread Joey Stanford
Although I can't replicate the error, I'll confirm this based on the
valgrind and pass to Matthias. I've seen the same error in
libvclplug_gen680li.so with another recent bug. This might be related to
the other one where it appears that there is a linkage error. Matthias
will need to double-check the build and recompile. At that point you
(jbj) will need to retest. I'll let him make the call on the
relatedness. FYI: The original gdb trace does not seem to match with
the valgrind.

[Bug 64013] Re: edgy: ooffice crashing x

2006-10-11 Thread Joey Stanford
Matthew,

So it looks like i2c, GLCore, and GLX are missing in the Good X setup.
I've had a look at the OOo logs and the GDB. It's a poser as they say.
I've now seen 2 other bugs with issues which seem to manifest in GLX but
my hunch is that there is something awry with packaging environment on
our end for OOo. This might be a root cause for OOo crashing but it
wouldn't take down X. So, given that your X config issue is most likely
tied to GLX, I am of the current opinion that you have something awry
with your libraries. I'm not qualified to work on those even though I
can fake it at times).

Do you have libgl1-mesa-dri (6.5.1) and libgl1-mesa-glx (6.5.1)
installed? If not, please install them, put the bad X config back, and
try to make it crash again.

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2007-10-24 Thread Joey Stanford
I have been able to confirm this on my System76 Darter. It appears to
also have been the problem I've been seeing since feisty where the HD
seems to always be in use. By deactivating APM (e.g. hdparm -B 255
/dev/sda ), my always in use issue has been resolved. My current Load
Cycle is 333001 on a machine I bought in March. Also to note, that the
load cycle increases also on AC Power, although not near as frequently
as with laptop mode.

new times. I'm unfortunately not a power management expert so your

2007-10-26 Thread Joey Stanford
That's interesting. I have belocs and all the available EO locale
files (except KDE) installed. I am on 64 bit though so I wonder if
that's a problem I'll check on my 32 bit computer tonight. However,
I've also confirmed on the 32 bit computer that I cannot switch. Both
computers were wiped and a fresh install of Gutsy laid down vs an
upgrade.

[Bug 288045] [NEW] on upgrade to Intrepid, xchat sound locations are broken and cause pop-up spam

2008-10-23 Thread Joey Stanford
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xchat

Hi,

When you upgrade from Hardy to Intrepid and your xchat preferences are
maintained, the location of the sound files becomes incorrect (i.e. the
sounds are missing). This causes xchat to issue pop up alerts everytime
a sound event occurs.

A quick fix is to use the pidgin sound files and update the xchat sound
preferences to use these.

[Bug 241085] Re: package ubuntustudio-audio 0.28 failed to install/upgrade: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured

2008-06-20 Thread Joey Stanford
I was able to fix this by uninstalling both timidity packages and
ubuntustudio-audio, and then installing ubuntustudio-audio again. Note
that this error was caused when converting the 64 bit version of Ubuntu
Desktop to Ubuntu Studio 64 bit.

[Bug 118303] Re: CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IO_TRACE is not enabled preventing blktrace from working

2007-06-04 Thread Joey Stanford
Adding me too for this. I have exhausted all attempts to find what
system process is continuously writing (100% of the time) to my disk on
my System76 laptop. Without blktrace working I am sunk. The problem
started when I did a fresh install of Feisty so reinstalling won't fix
the issue.

Hi,

I've applied the fix that just hit the repositories. It worked however I
am unable to launch gnome-appearance-properties now. In fact, my
terminal font is so small that I've had to copy and paste this error
into gedit :-)

(gnome-appearance-properties:6491): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **:
gdk_pixbuf_get_height: assertion `pixbuf != NULL' failed
The program 'gnome-appearance-properties' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadPixmap (invalid Pixmap parameter)'.
  (Details: serial 314 error_code 4 request_code 54 minor_code 0)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I'm wondering if clearing out parts of .gnome2 might be worth a shot.
