[Bug 526084] Re: Impossible to infer status of file syncing jobs

2010-03-10 Thread John Lea
The following changes are required to resolve this bug:

1) Add a message to the control panel that indicates Ubuntu One's global
sync status. The message will say either "Synchronisation in progress"
or "Synchronisation complete". See attached designs for further
details. For Lucid this messaging must be incorporated into the control
panel in a similar fashion.

2) Remove the "Connect"/"Disconnect" button from Nautilus. This
function is now handled in the control panel. For clarity, all global
functions should be handled by the control panel, and Nautilus should
only display information pertinent to the folder it is currently
displaying. See attached screen shot showing the desired content of the
Nautilus plugin (however note that the brown background should be
changed to Canonical purple).

[Bug 1213153] [NEW] [left edge] move the ‘switch screen to Dash Home’ initiation point further to the right

2013-08-16 Thread John Lea
Public bug reported:

Move the left edge continuation gesture ‘switch screen to Dash Home’
initiation point further to the right.

Currently if the user releases their finger when they more than 50%
across the screen this initiates the ‘switch screen to Dash Home’
action.

This bug requests that the ‘switch screen to Dash Home’ action should
only be initiated if the user lifts their finger when their finger is
more than 75% the way across the screen (e.g. further to the right)

[Bug 536766] Re: Personal file sharing preferences dialog does not offer to install needed packages

2013-08-20 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: nautilus

What happens -> I open the Personal file sharing preferences dialog via
system-preferences or via nautilus, and Im told that the network sharing
feature can not be enabled because the required packages are not on your pc.
I, as a tech user, went to synaptic, found the package, looked for its
recommends and got the functionality.
A normal user wont be able to do so, and so a button to install those
packages is needed for usabilty's sake.

  Desired resolution:

- - Remove the "Sharing Options" right click menu option from Nautilus.
- - Remove the 'Share' tab from the Nautilus 'Properties' window
+ - Change the "Sharing Options" text in them Nautilus right click folder menu
to "Local network share"
+ - Change the 'Share' tab title text in the Nautilus 'Properties' window to
"Local network share"
  - If a advanced user chooses to install the required packages, the menu

[Bug 1215630] Re: Hover on alt-tab easily bumped

2013-08-23 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

At some point the alt-tab application switcher seems to have gained
support for mouse hover. This means if you have the mouse in the middle
of the screen and then bump it while doing an alt-tab you can easily
  select the wrong application.

  To reproduce:
  1. hold alt down
  2. press tab
  3. Move mouse to the left of the switcher on the edge of an application icon
  4. Press tab a few times
  5. Move the mouse a little bit across between two icons

  Expected result:
  The selected icon doesn't change
  Observed result:
The icon under the mouse is selected

This is particularly bad when the icons concertina under the mouse. Then
basically any mouse movement will un-concertina them and select the
  wrong icon.

[Bug 1321656] Re: Indicators inappropriately take up the full screen

2014-05-21 Thread John Lea
Hi All, I'm marking this bug Won't Fix because this is a major change
that is not a mandatory requirement for RTM . Given all the other
items needed for RTM this change clearly falls into the post-RTM only
timeframe.

Also marking bug Private because the reason we cannot action this change
is due to the RTM timeframe.

[Bug 1513813] Re: unity8 windowed mode should cascade

2016-03-18 Thread John Lea
@lukas-kde @saviq I've updated the bug description to clarify this
change, but I've got a question about the original description - what
exactly was meant by 'cascade'? If this is what I think it means e.g.
display the windows in a diagonal stack then this is not the desired
behavior. We should restore all windows to as close to their original
sizes and positions when switching back to windowed mode.

When a user switches back to windowed mode on a different
size/resolution display (as is very possible in the convergence case),
then we should follow the logic described in the MIR spec for how the
windows sizes and positions are modified as minimally as possible to fit
onto the new screen size. See the section titled "When a display
shrinks, rotates, or is removed" in spec

[Bug 1513813] Re: unity8 windowed mode should cascade

2016-03-18 Thread John Lea
@kgunn72 description updated

** Description changed:

when launching transitioning to windowed mode or launching applications
in windowed mode, each window by default is the same size and locates to
  the same default location.

  --
  Desired resolution:

- - Window/Surface state should be remembered so that if a user switches
- from windowed mode to staged mode, when the user then switches back to
- windowed mode the windows should be restored to their previous windowed
- mode sizes and positions.
-
- - This also applies to staged mode e.g. if a surface was in the
- sidestage, when the user switches back to staged mode the surface should
- still be in the side stage.
+ - When the UI switches into Windowed mode, any surfaces that have never
+ been displayed in windowed mode before should be cascaded, and the
+ window size should be the default opening size requested by the
+ application (if available) and if not available a standard size of our
+ choosing.

** Summary changed:

- unity8 windowed mode should cascade
+ unity8 surfaces that have never before been in windowed mode should cascade

** Description changed:

when launching transitioning to windowed mode or launching applications
in windowed mode, each window by default is the same size and locates to
- the same default location.
+ the same default location. would be nicer to cascade

[Bug 1513813] Re: unity8 windowed mode should cascade

2016-03-19 Thread John Lea
@kgunn72 ahh, that makes sense, from reading the original issue
description I didn't get that this bug was *only* dealing with the issue
of entering windowed mode for the first time when windows don't yet have
a previous size/position. Yes, in this case the window positions should
be cascaded, and the window size should be the default size requested by
the application (if available) and if not available a standard size of
our choosing.

I'll update the issue description, thanks!

[Bug 1388070] Re: [Alarms] Allow snoozing an alarm/silencing a phone call by turning the phone face down.

2016-04-28 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

It'd be great to allow snoozing alarms using the "turnover" gesture as
  described here:

  http://qt-project.org/doc/qt-5/sensorgesture-plugins-topics.html

(Same goes for silenting incoming calls)

To be more precise on how the gesture would work:

In order to avoid false positives, the device needs to be turned from
face up to face down. If the device is already face down when the
alarm/call starts ringing, it needs first to be turned face up and then
  again face down.

   UX comment

- Please refer to the Screen blanking policy doc for further information:

[Bug 891648] Re: Dash - update Dash keyboard shortcuts so the 'CTRL + TAB' switches between Lenses and 'TAB' by itself moves the focus between categories

2012-04-05 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

Dash - update Dash keyboard shortcuts so the 'CTRL + TAB' switches
between Lenses and 'TAB' by itself moves the focus between categories.

  Requested change:
- - When the Dash is open, "CTRL + TAB" and "CTRL + PAGEUP" should switch the
user between lenses, in a left to right order.
- - When the Dash is open, "CTRL + SHIFT + TAB" and "CTRL + PAGEDOWN" should
switch the user between lenses, in a right to left order.
+ - When the Dash is open, "CTRL + TAB" and "CTRL + PAGEDOWN" should switch the
user between lenses, in a left to right order.
+ - When the Dash is open, "CTRL + SHIFT + TAB" and "CTRL + PAGEUP" should
switch the user between lenses, in a right to left order.
  - When the Dash is open, TAB should jump the keyboard focus between the
search result category headers and (if the search filters are open) between the
"All" button at the top of each search filter category header.
  - If no item on the dash is currently in focus, pressing TAB should focus the
top category header.
  - If a item is already focused, pressing TAB should focus the next category
header below.
  - If the item focused is either in the last search result category header, or
(if the search filters are open), a button under the last search filter
category header, pressing TAB should jump the focus back to the first search
result category header.
  - If the search filters are open and the item in the last search result
category header is selected, pressing TAB should focus the "All" button to the
right of the top search filter category header.

[Bug 932435] Re: HUD - HUD offers search results from app indicators more often than from currently focused application

2012-04-20 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

When using the HUD, search results are always reduced to menu items in
the keyboard or network application indicators, irrespective of what
  application has the focus.

  Steps to reproduce:
- 1. Start Firefox
- 2. Press ALT to open the HUD: the HUD search box opens with the FF icon next
to it
- 3. Type "pref": the icon changes to different app indicators (what app
indicator is shown varies), in particular the keyboard and network ones and
does not show any FF menu options
+ 1. Start a application (e.g. Character map)
+ 2. Press ALT to open the HUD: the HUD search box opens with the 'Character
Map' icon next to it
+ 3. Type "sh"

  Expected behaviour
- The HUD should favour menu options from the application that currently has
the focus and only show app indicator menu options as secondary items. In the
example above, the Firefox Edit > Preferences menu item would have been the
obvious one to show considering FF had the focus.
-
- It looks like the HUD in its current state is only able to show search
- results from the focused application or one of the app indicators but
- not both at the same time. The result is that it jumps between focused
- app and app indicators making it very unpredictable. A more stable
- behaviour would be to show search results from both the focused
- application and all app indicators with an order that favours the
- focused application.
+ The HUD should favour menu options from the application that currently has
the focus and only show app indicator menu options as secondary items. In the
example above, the Character Map functions should be shown at the top of the
list because this application has focus.
+
+ There needs to be more weighting in favour of focused application (as opposed
to the indicators)

  --
  Note from design:

This is an important bug, the display of indicator and desktop options
- needs to be very significantly retarded. They currently have much too
- high of a prominence.
+ needs to be retarded. The indicator options currently have too high of
+ a prominence.

[Bug 944449] Re: Highlight effect in Scale

2012-04-20 Thread John Lea
This issue should be fixed when development of "The Spread" is complete.
See http://design.canonical.com/2012/03/task-switching-in-ubuntu-and-a
-introduction-to-the-spread/ and http://design.canonical.com/the-toolkit
/unity-task-switching/

I'm marking this bug 'invalid', because this issue is covered in the new
spec

[Bug 946649] Re: Unity destroys window layout (maximize) on switching workspaces

2012-04-20 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

- If I arrange two overlapping windows on a workspace (i.e. a 80% sized FireFox
overlapping a littly VLC player) on switching from this workspace to another
workspace and back destroys my window layout and the large window (FireFox,
Thunderbird, etc.) is maximized.
-
- As a user I want unity to retain my window layout per workspace. Esp. after
I manually un-maximized and arranged my windows manually.

[Bug 947007] Re: If the 'trash can' is already open, clicking on it's Launcher icon should focus the already open trash window

2012-04-20 Thread John Lea
** Description changed:

- When clicking the trash can there is no arrow or other unity effects to
- indicate that the trash can has been loaded and is a currently running
- program. Thus a user may be inclined to click it again because it
- appears not to be running. Nautilus displays an arrow when the trash can
- is loaded - the trash can being simply a folder on Nautilus. I see the
- difficulty in implementing this but it's worth a mention at least.
+ Clicking on the trash can launcher icon when it is already loaded will
+ load the trash can again rather than bring the existing trash can into
+ focus.

- Another issue partly stemming from this one is that clicking on the
- trash can launcher icon when it is already loaded will load the trash
- can again rather than bring the existing trash can into focus. Should
- this be logged as a separate bug or treated as part of this one I've
- logged?
