screen not freezing up nor turning zombie, but i got the error described
above. it happens reliably. i just manufactured Ubuntu 14.04. when
exiting using ^A^D it does exactly what this bug describes. my screen
is then lost completely (no longer exists), then i get logged out. the
commands i'm running are:

byobu-screen -d -m -L -a -t amp703 -S amp703 -T xterm-color
byobu-screen -d -r amp703

i then type ^A^D it hangs for about 10 seconds. it then returns this:

Error: Cannot find master process to attach to!

my PS1 appears as would normally happen after a command completes, but
then i am logged out immediately through no action of my own complete
with the word logout as if the ^D part was interpreted by my shell.

sure enough, if i just type ^A by itself within byobu, after 10s it
drops to my shell with the master process error above.

[Bug 343067] [NEW] Playing a DVD iso in totem causes the iso to be mounted in .gvfs and not played.

2009-03-15 Thread Mark Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: totem

Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release:9.04

Regression In 9.04 (Jaunty): When using totem-xine, totem-gstreamer, etc
to open an iso, it mounts the iso to .gvfs, and then doesn't play it.
The files contained in the mounted folder are the AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS
folders, and none of the files contained in them play. Right clicking
an ISO and opening it with totem (Movie Player menu option) used to play
the ISO if it was a DVD in Intrepid Ibex / 8.10. This is quite
important for people who are using netbooks and cannot watch DVDs via an
internal drive.

In the case of ALIEN.iso (Or JURASSIC169.ISO or APOLLO69.ISO or any
other backup of a DVD)

Expected: Right click on ALIEN.iso, navigate to Open With Open with
Movie Player, DVD playback begins.

Actual: Right click on ALIEN.iso, navigate to Open With Open with
Movie Player, DVD is mounted to .gvfs, appears on desktop. totem
doesn't play any files or add ALIEN.iso to playlist.

Reproducible: Always.

Other Notes: Physical DVDs are unaffected, and play normally (mounted on
/media/cdrom0, but playback from /dev/sr0)

totem:
  Installed: 2.25.92-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 2.25.92-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 2.25.92-0ubuntu2 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Temporary workaround: Install totem-xine using your package manager.
Create a custom command launcher. Right click an ISO, click properties,
click the Open With tab, click Add, click the Use a custom command
arrow, and set the command to totem-xine dvd://

2009-03-15 Thread Mark Smith
Sorry, my initial workaround is incomplete, and as a result launches
whatever is in your dvd drive. I made this mistake because I had the
original DVD and the iso I was trying to mount in my DVD drive.

[Bug 343067] Re: Playing a DVD iso in totem causes the iso to be mounted in .gvfs and not played.

2009-03-19 Thread Mark Smith
No, if you go to File-Open it still mounts the ISO and does not play.
I was able to get it working by playing it from command line via totem
dvd://path-to-image in totem-xine.

With totem-gstreamer dvd://path-to-image, I get
** Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer|0.10|totem|DVD source|urisource-dvd (DVD
source)
** Message: No installation candidate for missing plugins found.
** Message: Error: A DVD source plugin is required to play this stream, but not
installed.
gstplaybasebin.c(1673): gen_source_element (): /GstPlayBin:play:
No URI handler for dvd

** Message: Missing plugin: gstreamer|0.10|totem|DVD source|urisource-dvd
(ignoring)
** Message: All missing plugins are blacklisted, doing nothing

I think this is unrelated however, since with totem-xine I get fine
playback using the above dvd://path-to-iso method. Going to
file-open, however, always mounts the DVD iso and does not play it.

[Bug 343067] Re: Playing a DVD iso in totem causes the iso to be mounted in .gvfs and not played.

2009-03-24 Thread Mark Smith
Where is here? Ubuntu 8.10? What works fine? Right clicking an .iso
of a DVD and opening with movie player? Going to File-Open and picking
the ISO? Clicking and dragging the ISO to a playlist? None of these
works fine for me on two separate machines installed with Jaunty
Jackalope, but all of them work fine in 8.10 (thus the idea that it is a
regression). Instead, the disc is mounted, and the files inside show
up as file.extention;1, for example VIDEO_TS.VOB;1 rather than the
proper VIDEO_TS.VOB (possibly related to another bug I saw, am not able
to find at the moment). Does playing it from the command line work for
you in totem-gstreamer? Totem-xine?

2009-03-26 Thread Mark Smith
This behaviour also appears if you attempt to import the file into
rythmbox. The iso is mounted, but no content is played. VLC, Disc
Burner, and archive manager are able to open the files normally, and do
not mount the isos. It appears that Totem and Rythmbox attempt to mount
the ISO then read the content somehow.

It HAS been sent upstream to GNOME. The claim is that it is due to the
fact that libarchive in ubuntu 9.04 is out of date. I disagreed with
this assessment since the version they tested ships with Fedora 11, and
the same issue is there, but have seen no further updates, and have
nothing else to add other than It's still broken. at this time.

[Bug 527157] Re: Brightness controls skips Levels.

2012-02-23 Thread Mark Smith
Happy Birthday Bug 527157! Gee, has it been two years already? It
feels like just yesterday I was wondering why I couldn't get more than
5-7 brightness levels! Three Ubuntu releases later, and I've had to find
two different solutions to the same problem. Maybe it's a g-p-m bug!
Maybe it's a kernel bug! I've heard claims that the kernel is reporting
xrandr brightness change failures even though the change actually
succeeded. Who knows?!

For those of you who are tired of patching Gnome-Power-Manager, or
trying unsuccesfully to patch the new version in the Gnome 3 branches, I
may have found a solution less likely to get clobbered by system
updates. The fix worked for this bug on my next laptop, an Alienware
M11x r2. I've since moved on to OS X on a Macbook Air, but my hope is
that it will help other poor souls just trying to get a comfortable
brightness level.

Add the following options to your kernel boot parameters:
acpi_backlight=vendor

I can't guarantee this will work on your laptop. It gave me 15
brightness levels on the Alienware (instead of the default 9 in windows
or 4.5 in unmodified ubuntu). An unpleasant side effect was that the
screen would go to sleep and not wake up, even though the system was
still accessible via ssh. No amount of hand waving or xrandr prodding
managed to fix this, or revive the comatose screen. I solved this by
setting my display to never turn off unless I closed the screen.

Despite my snark, I am appreciative of the work put in by people to fix this
bug. I would like to thank everyone who helped out on this bug with your
comments and testing.

I would like to give special thanks to Darwin Bautista and Konstantin
Lavrov for working so diligently on the original patch. Your work let me
use my machine with the proper brightness levels right up until the 3.x
tree of GPM. Without you guys (and especially Darwin's ppa), I would've
never had proper screen brightness, and would've never known where to
look when resolving this issue in the next version of GPM.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you all.

[Bug 839281] Re: Double brightness events after logging in.

2012-02-23 Thread Mark Smith
I think I have found a workaround, for those running across this.
I posted some info here, in this similar bug.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/527157

The practical upshot of all this is that adding the kernel parameter
acpi_backlight=vendor
seems to give me proper brightness levels across the board. There were some
side effects, namely my screen would go to sleep (due to the power manager
timer) and not wake up. I'd suggest setting your screen to never go to sleep
unless you close the lid. This fixed the comatose screen issue for me.

[Bug 839281] Re: Double brightness events after logging in.

2011-10-13 Thread Mark Smith
I switched back to stable Ubuntu for a while, but I am now back on
Oneric. First, I'd like to point out that but 527157 is likely closely
related to this bug. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
power-manager/+bug/527157

I plan on running apport-collect 839281 just as soon as I get my oneric install
finished.
For the record, KDE does not exhibit this bug. It is gnome specific. As far as
I can tell, Gnome's power plugins try every possible way of increasing and
decreasing the brightness, and in many cases this results in more than one
brightness event being sent. While this is probably preferable to having NO
brightness adjustments, it's certainly not ideal to have brightness levels
reduced from 8 to 4.

Actual result: At the login screen, brightness keys increase and

This specifically seems to apply to the POWER plugin for
gnome-settings-daemon. setting active to false via
gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power active false returns
the behavior to normal, but removes the gnome power indicator. However, since
the battery indicator is present at the login screen, there must be a second

Expected result: At the login screen, brightness keys increase and
decrease brightness by one step. After logging in, brightness keys
continue to increase and decrease brightness by one step.

Actual result: At the login screen, brightness keys increase and
decrease brightness by one step (same as expected, OK.) After logging
in, brightness increases and decreases by two steps whenever a
brightness key is pressed.

This specifically seems to apply to the POWER plugin for gnome-settings-daemon.
setting active to false via
gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power active false returns
the behavior to normal, but removes the gnome power indicator. However, since
the battery indicator is present at the login screen, there must be a second
application, hotkey, etc, trying to change brightness.

[Bug 527157] Re: Brightness controls skips Levels.

2011-08-30 Thread Mark Smith
This bug is still a problem in Oneric. The version of Gnome Power Manager
is completely different (3.1.3). Is there a fix possible for this? The
bug is exactly the same. Two brightness levels when only one is needed.

[Bug 343067] Re: Playing a DVD iso in totem causes the iso to be mounted in .gvfs and not played.

2009-04-30 Thread Mark Smith
Filed upstream. Refined as it is likely a problem with gvfs-archive. I
set the status to confirmed before because I was told to do so in
#ubuntu+1 (before the jaunty release date) by one of the devs in the
channel, who along with another user, did indeed confirm the bug. I
will leave it as new for now, and ask them to set it to confirmed
themselves in the future.

Tested Konstantin Lavrov's patch (Comment #15) in Natty (11.04). worked
like a charm. With the patch, double brightness events are now gone in
my Alienware M11xR2 as well. Please commit ASAP!

[Bug 647389] Re: No Sound on Macbook 7, 1 on uptodate Maverick installation

2010-11-09 Thread Mark Smith
I took a look at alsamixer, and it would seem that Alsa thinks that my
left speaker is actually my front speaker, and the right is another
surround speaker. This is probably why audio is so quiet and distorted.

[Bug 688146] Re: Maverick: Very slow and unstable wireless connection with BCM4322 on 5, 5 Macbook pro

2011-03-01 Thread Mark Smith
I encountered the same bug on my 13 Macbook Pro 7,1. I decided to try
the new Broadcom driver released December 22, 2010 (Version
5.100.82.38), and it seemed to resolve these issues. This is the driver
used in Natty, IIRC. Any chance of seeing a backport?

[Bug 609234] [NEW] Multimedia and battery keys do not work on Dell Studio 1557

2010-07-23 Thread Mark Smith
Public bug reported:

dmesg shows:
dell-wmi: Unknown key 0 pressed

This is a pretty easy fix:
http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/linux/kernel/1242512
I tested it on 2.6.33 and 2.6.34 on gentoo and it worked perfectly. This
should fix the issue on the studio 1555/1557/1558.

Should the Studio 155x models fall into the dell_new_hk_type category
instead?

[Bug 527157] [NEW] Brightness controls create triple brightness changes on Dell Mini 1012

2010-02-24 Thread Mark Smith
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

When I use the brightness control keys from a fresh install, the brightness

when hitting brightness up/down with gnome-power-manager, udevmonitor shows

[Bug 652531] Re: software-center crashed with IOError in _open()

2010-09-30 Thread Mark Smith
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 652151 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/652151

ach. nevermind. The logfile/traceback is misleading. It appears that
somehow /home/mark/.cache/software-center/ had its ownership changed to
root:root. changing it back to mark:mark (My username) solved the
problem. This was a fresh install of ubuntu as of yesterday. Perhaps
the default permissions are wrong? More testing is required on my end.

[Bug 642091] Re: Acer Aspire One 721 - no resume after suspend

2010-09-18 Thread Mark Smith
I have what appears to be the same problem with my Dell Mini 1012 in the
current 10.10 beta. This seems to be a regression, since suspend/resume
worked fine for me in 10.04.

I tried the workaround found at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6105510postcount=12 and it
appears to work. This bug was fixed back in intrepid, but seems to have
showed up again. Unfortunately, I have no idea which prior bug this is
related to.

The basic idea if the workaround is that if you disable all but one CPU
before suspend, the machine will resume properly. Once your machine has
resumed, it re-enables the other CPU(s).

[Bug 527157] Re: Brightness controls skips Levels.

2010-03-10 Thread Mark Smith
I tested this in Arch, and it affects Arch's current version as well.
Every version of GPM I've seen seems to have this issue. Kubuntu's
power manager does not have this problem. I looked into the code for
GPM, and noticed that xrandr is used to adjust the brightness. The HAL
code has an option to check an fdi for brightness_in_hardware, but the
xrandr code does not have any similar option. My C kung-fu is not
sufficient to fix this problem on my own at this time, but I will
continue to work at it. \

I don't think we want to disable xrandr entirely for this model, since
this would likely break stuff like dim after a few minutes or dim on
battery. Instead, I think there should be an option to disable
brightness up and down events being controlled by xrander, based on
gconf or a setting in GPM.

[Bug 609234] Re: Multimedia and battery keys do not work on Dell Studio 1557

2010-08-17 Thread Mark Smith
Bug still exists in daily maverick build. Should be a super easy fix,
but I'm not familiar enough with the Ubuntu kernel build process. When
I patched this on Gentoo, worked like a charm. Affects Battery key
(Fn-F3), keyboard brightness key for back-light keyboard (Fn-F6, still
functions to change keyboard brightness), and Eject key (No F key,
located to the right of F12).

The patch basically determines if the key buffer entry at [1] is empty,
and if it is, uses buffer_entry[2]. If someone can throw together a
kernel package for me, I can test ASAP.

This patch should fix the buttons on the Studio 1555, Studio 1557, Studio 1558.
Apply to drivers/platform/x86/dell-wmi.c inside the kernel source tree.

[Bug 527157] Re: Brightness controls skips Levels.

2012-07-18 Thread Mark Smith
Just popped in to check on this bug. I don't have the hardware I filed
this against anymore, and I'm still happy on OS X and my Macbook Air,
but I feel a responsibility to the users still stuck with this problem.

Why are you guys marking the g-p-m bug invalid? The switch to g-s-d
doesn't invalidate the original bug, which was logged against a still-
supported LTS version. 10.04 still uses g-p-m. By all means, open a
new bug for the new g-s-d incarnation of the bug, but please don't hose
the LTS users...

6.4.1.1 (as reported with gcalctool --version) and 6.4.1.1-0ubuntu3 (as
reported by dpkg-query -l gcalctool) on Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS which is up
to date as of today.

When I run gcalctool from a terminal, it outputs the following at
exactly the time it should be outputting a comma (e.g. i type in 1000
into the gcalctool):

(gcalctool:8733): Gtk-WARNING **: Invalid text buffer iterator: either
the iterator is uninitialized, or the characters/pixbufs/widgets in the
buffer have been modified since the iterator was created. You must use
marks, character numbers, or line numbers to preserve a position across
buffer modifications. You can apply tags and insert marks without
invalidating your iterators, but any mutation that affects 'indexable'
buffer contents (contents that can be referred to by character offset)
will invalidate all outstanding iterators

I am using English, but there may be something set for NZ somewhere
hidden. When I examine my environment, there are no LC variables set:

 $ env | grep LC

when i run gcalctool as follows it displays a comma, yet still outputs
the same Gtk-WARNING as above:

 LC_ALL=en_NZ.UTF-8 gcalctool

[Bug 1219337] Re: Users can change the clock without authenticating, allowing them to locally exploit sudo.

There is now a beta version of sudo (1.8.10b1) that has the timestamp
changed to use the monotonic clock. I continue to suggest that the
setting to require no password to change the clock be opt-IN rather than
opt-out.

[Bug 1219337] Re: Users can change the clock without authenticating, allowing them to locally exploit sudo.

2013-09-06 Thread Mark Smith
A somewhat sensible workaround I can find at the moment is to force re-
authentication every time you type sudo. The way to do this is by
adding:

Defaults timestamp_timeout=0

to the Defaults section of your /etc/sudoers

This will work on Ubuntu, OS X, and other variants.

Details can be found in http://www.sudo.ws/sudoers.man.html

We really shouldn't be trusting the clock to being with. The fact that
Ubuntu developers have seen fit to add convenience features to bypass
security rather proves the point.

[Bug 1219337] Re: Users can change the clock without authenticating, allowing them to locally exploit sudo.

2013-09-08 Thread Mark Smith
There's a fine balance between security and usability, and not everyone is
comfortable with the same level of security. As I've mentioned before, it is
trivial to modify the defaults to achieve the level of security that is
appropriate for your environment.

If that's the case, why are you defaulting to a level that Debian,
Fedora, Mint, and Windows all feel is too lax? Why not let the very few
users who need this, change it to be less secure?

Based on my discussions, it seems that this is actually a *sudo* bug,
since it uses the non-monotonic clock, rather than using other system
features.

2013-09-09 Thread Mark Smith
It's a bit more complicated than that, but not much: Sudo stores the SID
in the authentication file. However, setsid is installed by default, so
you can just launch processes with new SIDs until you get a match. You
can either run setsid and sudo a bunch and hope that you match up, or
you can look up the SID (also found in auth.log) and match that without
running sudo. It's not trivial, but it's certainly doable.

[Bug 1219337] Re: Users can change the clock without authenticating, allowing them to locally exploit sudo.

2013-09-03 Thread Mark Smith
This is by DESIGN?
Your design is that any user can change the time, and therefore bypass the
security of sudo?
What's the justification for not having the user enter a password to change the
time? Convenience?

Marc, with all due respect, did you even read the bug?

If you disable the sudo password for your account, you will seriously
compromise the security of your computer. Anyone sitting at your
unattended, logged in account will have complete Root access, and remote
exploits become much easier for malicious crackers.

This policy kit change adds a single condition: That the user has used
sudo to escalate at some point, and it creates /exactly/ the same
conditions.

I'm going to re-open this just to be sure. It seems incredible that
Ubuntu would intentionally let people bypass security like that.

[Bug 1219337] Re: Users can change the clock without authenticating, allowing them to locally exploit sudo.

2013-09-04 Thread Mark Smith
This allows administrative users travelling with laptops to change the
timezone without getting an authentication prompt.

Why is saving the traveling admin from typing their password a couple of
times a day worth compromising security for everyone else? No,
seriously. Why?

Your attack vector assumes that an administrative user is going to leave an
open session unattended.

Yes, my assumption is that users will forget to lock their machines,
because it happens all the time. This is especially true if it's a
personal machine, and they are the ONLY user.

If that is the case, there are a whole slew of attacks that are possible, and
don't require changing the date. For example, creating scripts in ~/bin that
are higher in the path then system binaries.

Even if that number is high, that's no excuse. Is your stance really
Well, they could compromise security 100 ways, so what's one more?
Plus, how many of those attacks require 0 external resources, and
creating 0 additional files on the system, and would leave little trace
beyond a hiccup in the time/date?

Since your local security policy is different than what is shipped in a
general purpose operating system...

Wanting a slightly more secure system is more of an edge case than changing the
time zone repeatedly? REALLY?
Does Windows 8 count as general purpose to you? It requires escalation to
change the date and time. Maybe their escalation system isn't very good, but
it's still better than blithely letting admins change the system time without
so much as a prompt. Also, their security system doesn't rely on file
timestamps, so it's less likely to grant someone root access.

1- Requiring your administrative users to lock their workstation when they
 are left unattended.

People make mistakes. Are you telling me you've NEVER forgotten to lock
your workstation? You've NEVER seen another admin forget to lock theirs?

2- Requiring your administrative users to use sudo -k to forcibly
 invalidate cached credentials.

That only works on a per pty/tty basis on ubuntu. It only invalidates
one of the sessions, and it invalidates it by changing the timestamp
to a date to Dec. 31, 1969 or Jan. 1, 1970. You could try sudo -K,
which deletes the file, but again only on a per pty/tty basis.

3- Removing the policykit-desktop-privileges package, or overriding the
 policy with a local one.

Oh good, more administrative work, all to save typing a password! Pity
about all the users who don't know what policykit-desktop-privileges is
or does though...

4- Disabling ntp, or setting up ntp authentication.

Disabling ntp wouldn't help, since the whole point is that the user can
change the time to anything manually anyhow.

5- Setting a firmware password on local machines.

This doesn't help if they walked away and forgot to lock their machines.

I especially love how #2 requires the user to remember to execute a command
before they close their terminal, and adds an extra 7 keystrokes PER TTY/PTY.
All this to save a hypothetical traveling admin from having to type his
password once when he moves to a different timezone. If they want to save
themselves a few keystrokes to change the timezone, let /them/ change policy
kit. Don't stick every unsuspecting user with a security hole.

commands i'm running are:

byobu-screen -d -m -L -a -t amp703 -S amp703 -T xterm-color
byobu-screen -d -r amp703

i then type ^A^D it hangs for about 10 seconds. it then returns this:

Error: Cannot find master process to attach to!

my PS1 appears as would normally happen after a command completes, but
then i am logged out immediately through no action of my own complete
with the word logout as if the ^D part was interpreted by my shell.

sure enough, if i just type ^A by itself within byobu, after 10s it
drops to my shell with the master process error above.

[Bug 1272624] Re: [Dell Latitude E7440] 14.04 Touchpad causing mouse pointer to spuriously jump around screen

2014-06-07 Thread Mark Smith
I'm on an E7240 running 12.04 LTS (anxiously awaiting my employeer to
certify 14.04 with all our internal tools and what-not) and I have this
problem. I'm pretty sure it happens because my middle and ring fingers
accidentally touch the top edge of the pad while my pointer finger is
moving the cursor. I can reproduce this on purpose by running xinput
--test [device number] and watching the events while I do the
following:

- Touch the pad near the middle or bottom. The cursor moves slightly as my
finger wiggles around.
- Without removing the first finger, touch the pad again with a second finger
above the first finger. The cursor shoots up to a[1]=0 (which is the y
position).
- Without removing the first finger, remove the second (top) finger. The
cursor shoots back down to a[1]=some large number Sometimes it takes it all
the way to the bottom of the screen, sometimes it goes back to where it was, or
somewhere else. I haven't been able to figure out how it decides what to go
back to.

With this, while I touching with my pointer finger and my middle or ring
finger accidentally touch the pad at the top, the cursor shoots where I
don't want it. Then when my middle/ring finger leaves the pad (usually
because I started cursing (get it?) at my cursor), it shoots back down
again somewhere completely arbitrary.

Similarly:

- Touch the bad near the top.
- Without removing the top finger, touch somewhere near the bottom. The cursor
doesn't (yet) move.
- Lift the top finger. The cursor shoots to the bottom.
- Put down the top finger again, without lifting the bottom. The cursor shoots
back up again.

You can make the cursor shoot up and down just by keeping your bottom
finger down and tapping the top finger. The cursor follows the top
finger no matter what you do.

Interestingly, this does NOT happen from side-to-side. Two touches
side-by-side trigger the multi-touch gestures and don't move the cursor.

If we could just get it so that going from single touch to multi-touch
top-to-bottom doesn't actually move the cursor, that would be grand.

Thank you very much for all your help. :-)

don't want it.

Two touches side-
by-side trigger the multi-touch gestures and don't move the cursor.

[Bug 1328313] Re: Alps Touchpad acts erratically when multi-touch is vertical, not horizontal

2014-06-10 Thread Mark Smith
apport information

** Tags added: apport-collected

** Description changed:

I'm on a Dell Latitude E7240 running 12.04 LTS and my touch pad acts
erratically. It happens because my middle and ring fingers accidentally touch
the top edge of the pad while my pointer finger is moving the cursor. I can
reproduce this on purpose by running xinput --test [device number] and
watching the events while I do the following:

The
cursor doesn't (yet) move.
  - Lift the top finger. The cursor shoots to the bottom.
  - Put down the top finger again, without lifting the bottom. The cursor
shoots back up again.

You can make the cursor shoot up and down just by keeping your bottom
finger down and tapping the top finger. The cursor follows the top
finger no matter what you do.

Interestingly, this does NOT happen from side-to-side. Two touches side-
by-side trigger the multi-touch gestures and don't move the cursor.
