[Bug 353835] Re: Please add 802.1Q/VLAN tagging support to NetworkManager

2012-07-26 Thread Michael
Thanks to everybody. That helped a lot.

Now, is there any chance to get the VLAN connection up as soon as a
cable is connected? This works fine for 802-3-ethernet connections, but
apparently not for VLAN connections, right?

Unfortunately, nm-applet does not even show the connection at all. I
hoped, one could at least activate or deactive the VLAN connection with
nm-applet. Editing configuration would not have been necessary.

So, at the moment, am I right, that there is no other way than entering

nmcli con up id VLAN1

whenever I connect the cable?

Thanks again

Michael

Strange that it had positive effect on the liferea bug...

Maybe the segmentation fault has to do with another thing? Again, I attached

I'm not sure how else to explain it other than to say without the patch,
the calculated PNG dimensions are different to the actual PNG dimensions,
resulting in the graphs being scaled in ugly ways (missing or duplicated
rows/columns of pixels) by the web browser.

Non-CGI mode (the default) is unaffected because PNG dimensions are instead
obtained from the actual PNGs themselves.

At the very least, you should be able to tell that rows of text are 12
pixels each and not 15...

[Bug 529714] Re: rhythmbox crashed with SIGSEGV in _nss_wins_gethostbyname_r()

2010-04-30 Thread Michael
Yes, I found a couple of older, unresolved bugs with the same
workaround:

Moving wins to end of line in /etc/nsswitch.conf fixed problem:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/liferea/+bug/369274

However, moving wins after dns just disables wins, which then breaks
samba.

Removing wins fixed the problem here, too:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tk8.5/+bug/200397

Again, removing wins just breaks samba. The bug remains, either way.

[Bug 34599] Re: Canon PIXMA IP xxxx don't work

2006-09-04 Thread Michael
I have submitted code to Gutenprint to add a driver for the iP4200. It
is currently only available from their CVS, but should go into 5.0.1 if
there are no problems. I would be grateful to anyone willing to give it
a try (it worked in my minimal tests).

[Bug 42398] Re: Dapper kernel 2.6.15-21 K7 and others hang probing CK804 IDE

2006-09-06 Thread Michael
OK, I upgraded my system. Not everything is working yet, but it
definitely does not work unless I add pci=nommconf to the kernel command
line.

So yes, Edgy still has this problem. I suggest that you add this
parameter by default for systems that might be affected.

[Bug 42398] Re: Dapper kernel 2.6.15-21 K7 and others hang probing CK804 IDE

2006-10-06 Thread Michael
Still present in the latest (as of a week or so ago) Edgy and kernel.org
kernels. I have done more background research on the problem, and it is
to do with PCI express support. On the one hand, the kernel developers
seem to be still learning about it, and on the other, more seriously, an
awful lot of BIOS' do not implement it correctly, causing system hangs
at boot if it is used anyway. The kernel developers are gradually
adding workaround support for those BIOS', but there are still quite a
few systems which hang if mmconfig is enabled. I would really suggest
that you disable mmconfig PCI probing when you build the Edgy kernel, as
PCIe support is probably somewhat less important than supporting many
systems reliably.

[Bug 64468] [Edgy]External USB Drive no longer accessible in vmware

2006-10-06 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vmware-player

In Dapper, VMware was able to use XP for old applications and used an
external Western Digital 120 GB USB hard drive as a backup drive (is
formatted NTFS). I would power up the USB drive once I was logged into
XP in vmware and the drive would become available. After upgrading to
Edgy and using vmware, when the drive is powered up, vmware does not
allow it to be recognized. Edgy mounts the drive and will not allow
vmware access to the USB drive. Tried Ejecting drive in Edgy and then
returning the focus to XP in vmware and powering up the drive and still
Edgy mounts it and does not allow vmware to access the drive.

[Bug 67186] System hang while shutting down from KDE

2006-10-20 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

When shutting down or rebooting from inside KDE, the system locks up
before the Kubuntu splash screen appears. I have tried to establish a
pattern, and my results were as follows (can't guarantee them 100%):

1) This occurs when I select shutdown or reboot from the KDE K-Menu, but
not if I end the session and select shutdown or reboot from the login
manager.

2) If I disable the splash screen, this does not occur at all.

3) This occurs with all 2.6.17 Ubuntu kernels I currently have on my
system (2.6.17.6-K7 to current).

Please let me know if I can provide any additional information.

[Bug 63975] Re: Please sponsor network-manager upload

Potentially, you could add

else if (!strcmp (kernel_driver, rtl8180))
wpa_driver = ipw;

to the list. However, I did not get this working fully. When I do add
it, my wlan is still detected as WEP, and I have to explicitly tell it
to connect to network network.name with WPA 1 encryption to get it to
connect.

I should clarify the last comment. I am using KNetworkManager as an
interface to network_manager. I made the change mentioned in my last
comment in network_manager, however it is KNetworkManager which shows my
network as detected as WEP, but allows me to connect to it using WPA
when I specifically request it. I don't know whether KNetworkManager is
purely a wrapper, or whether it does its own things as well.

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2007-10-25 Thread Michael
I found out about this bug from Digg this morning. After investigating,
I found that the load cycle on my harddrive was increasing rapidly, both
on AC and on battery. This sounds like a fairly serious bug, and should
be dealt with quickly. I've made the following changes, which seems to
have fixed it (load cycle doesn't increase on AC, and doesn't seem to
increase much on DC).

[Bug 59695] Re: default value in power.sh potentially kills laptop disks

2007-10-25 Thread Michael
Smartctl reports a temperature of 49 degrees, which I'm not too worried
about. I haven't tested power consumption yet. My settings allow the
harddrive to switch off after 5min of inactivity when on battery, and
power management isn't completely disabled when on battery. I basically
just want to save my drive at the moment -- once this bug gets fixed
I'll revert to the (new) default settings.

[Bug 294973] [NEW] vim is not installable because vim-runtime is not available

Public bug reported:

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that

[Bug 283658] Re: grip buffer overflow in intrepid

Having same issue, with only one cd, so far.
Lame is the encoder, all paranoia is disabled, first song rips, and begins
encoding, as soon as second song starts ripping - grip aborts with the same
output as above.
I can rip the whole cd without problem, but rip+encode causes grip to fail on

[Bug 251687] Re: Firefox 3 cannot save files or access file system

2008-10-31 Thread Michael
Interestingly enough, I no longer have this problem. I had encountered
the original problem after upgrading from Gutsy Gibbon (7.10) to Hardy
Heron (8.04). Since then, I had to wipe my hard drive and start over
with a fresh install of Hardy. After the re-install, I have not
experienced this bug. So it seems that something was different between
the upgraded version and the installed-from-scratch version.

donfouts, if you are experiencing this bug after upgrading, I would
recommend doing a fresh install of the OS. Sure, it sounds like a
drastic measure to fix a browser problem. But the fact that a fresh
install fixed the problem makes it seem that it was actually a problem
with Ubuntu, not Firefox.

[Bug 202089] Re: Pulseaudio is blocking normal sound after resume

2008-10-20 Thread Michael
Neither of the pasuspender commands fixes my problems, nor does killall
pulseaudio. Yet I have the same symptoms: Totem and Rhythmbox work fine
until suspend/resume, at which point they appear to play fine, but no
sound comes out of the speakers. Also, no volume sliders are muted.

I believe there are multiple bugs that occur with the same set of
actions. My hardware uses kernel device snd_hda_intel. I tried the
pulseaudio fixes in this thread, but none of them worked for me. The
only valid fix for me in this thread was in the following comment:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/202089/comments/19

This seems to indicate a kernel bug, or at least something at a lower
level than ALSA and PulseAudio.

I did some more checking and found this bug (and recommended fix, which
fixes the issue permanently):

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/270593

The problem is that the snd-hda-intel module has a broken model=auto
mode that works on bootup but fails during the suspend/resume cycle.
People for whom the pasuspender echo or killall pulseaudio fixes do
NOT work should be posting in bug 270593, where I will now be adding
more information.

Again, two separate issues with exactly the same symptoms. Hope this
clears up some of the confusion. :)

[Bug 270593] Re: Intel HDA / Realtek ALC885: No sound after resume

2008-10-20 Thread Michael
Hi! I have the same problem and want to add some information.

The following fix works (temporarily):

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/202089/comments/19

This seems to indicate a kernel bug.

The suggested fix worked for me:

I was able to fix the problem by adding the following line to
 /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base :

 options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dig

Now my computer suspends/resumes properly.

Also, can you please double-check that *every* sound device works
with that model?

model=auto should work with every sound device, but there's a bug that
prevents it from working on resume.

See this document:
http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/10495

model=6stack-dig should NOT work with every sound device. model=auto
is the default, but, like I said, it's broken.

Here's the list of values for the model parameter:

http://www.mjmwired.net/kernel/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-
Configuration.txt#769

As you can see, it's quite an extensive list, and sadly it's very
hardware specific. So there's really no generic fix that the Ubuntu
developers can deliver. The only solution appears to be an updated
kernel with a fixed snd-hda-intel module.

working. The GTK application gives out 2 warnings as follow:

  (gtk_app:pid): Gtk-WARNING **: libbonoboui-2.so.0: cannot open
sharedobject file: No such file or directory

  (gtk_app:pid): Gtk-WARNING **: libbonoboui-2.so.0: cannot open
sharedobject file: No such file or directory

  After I installed libbonoboui2-0, the gtk-qt-engine works.
+
+ This bug does not affect Kubuntu 8.04.1.

[Bug 290299] [NEW] extremly slow system

2008-10-28 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

The system is unacceptable slow, eg starting firefox takes between 50
and 90 seconds (on vista on the same machine 10 seconds), starting the
first gnome-terminal takes around 20 seconds.

I am using Ubuntu 8.10 rc1 on a HP-Compaq 6715s
CPU: AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-58
Memory: 2GB
Graphics: ATI Technologies Inc RS690M [Radeon X1200 Series]

I asume that the problem is related to fglrx but I am not able to ensure
that. Using top I can see that Xorg always consumes between 10 and 15 %
CPU.

Beside that Linux always runs the fan with full speed, even if the
temperature is below 25C.

[Bug 291148] [NEW] KDevelop hangs on recursive symlink importing C++ project with custom makefile

2008-10-30 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdevelop

Affects: Kubuntu 8.04 and 8.10.

Steps to reproduce:

1) Start KDevelop IDE for C/C++
2) Select Project/Import existing project
3) Select a project directory containing a recursive symlink somewhere beneath
it
4) Fill in everything else and continue up until Populate the project

The hang occurs in the method CustomProjectPart::findNewFiles() in
buildtools/custommakefiles/customprojectpart.cpp. This function
descends into directories recursively without checking for recursive
symlinks.

[Bug 291473] [NEW] WISHLIST: lower the bar for usability fixes to KDE in Ubuntu 8.10

2008-10-31 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

In Kubuntu 810, KDE has many many usability issues. A lot of these are
likely to be fixable during the next six months. It would be great if
you were more liberal than usual in accepting these fixes into Intrepid
due to the unusual circumstances of the new KDE 4.1. IMO the added
risk is worth the gain here.

[Bug 220151] [NEW] (N?)NetworkManager does not always connect to wireless AP on startup

2008-04-21 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: knetworkmanager

When I initially boot up and log on, KNetworkManager does not have my
wireless network in the list of available networks. When I enter the
network details manually it sees it and connects. Repeated invocation
of iwlist scanning prints out wlan0 No scan results a couple of
times, and in between shows a list of networks including mine (but
missing one listed by KNetworkManager). Sometimes automatic connection
takes place while I am entering the network details. I can't say for
sure whether it has connected on startup since the upgrade to Hardy.

System: fully updated Kubuntu Hardy

Network details: IPW 4965 AG or AGN, 802.11G router (Fritz!Box WLAN
3030, firmware 21.04.33 updated a few months ago), WPA1 TKIP encryption.
The three networks seen by the application on startup are shown as
62Mb/s bandwidth and respectively WPA, WPA1 and 2 and no encryption.

[Bug 220235] [NEW] KDE applications use different key combinations for switching between tabs

2008-04-21 Thread Michael
Public bug reported:

Konversation and Konsole use different key combinations for switching
between tabs. Konversation uses ALT+Left/Right and Konsole uses
SHIFT+left/right. Konqueror doesn't seem to support this at all using a
key combination. I know that this is a trivial issue, but consistency
is nice with this sort of thing.
