[Bug 1745273] Re: Cannot open terminal with long working directory name containing Unicode characters
My locale is as follows: $ locale LANG=en_US.UTF-8 LANGUAGE= LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8" LC_NUMERIC=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_TIME=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8" LC_MONETARY=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8" LC_PAPER=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_NAME=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_ADDRESS=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_TELEPHONE=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_MEASUREMENT=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_IDENTIFICATION=de_DE.UTF-8 LC_ALL= Using “unset PROMPT_COMMAND” had no effect at all (and seems to be empty for me, anyway?). This is pretty much a fresh install, so I’m using Ubuntu’s default value of PS1: $ echo "'$PS1'" '\[\e]0;\u@\h: \w\a\]${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\[\033[01;32m\]\u@\h\[\033[00m\]:\[\033[01;34m\]\w\[\033[00m\]\$ ' However, when I change that to PS1='\[\033[01;34m\]\w\[\033[00m\]\$ ' there seems to be no more crashing. So it seems that certain values of PS1 do indeed trigger this bug. I have also tried the bash development version, as suggested. Even with the default value of PS1, I haven’t been able to cause a crash there. However, this version goes REALLY crazy with the input prompt (junk characters, erratically printing parts of the history or working directory path to the terminal when pressing the arrow keys, invisible text input etc.) for long working directory paths (with or without Unicode characters), making input all but impossible. So whatever the difference between the two versions is, it’s not an improvement. Anyway, thanks a lot for the help so far. Since I’m not seeing the crash in the newer version, I’m assuming it will be gone when Ubuntu updates (with the weird behavior for long paths hopefully due to different compiler flags or something like that). As a workaround, modifying PS1 seems to work. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1745273 Title: Cannot open terminal with long working directory name containing Unicode characters To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bash/+bug/1745273/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 1745271] Re: Input prompt behaves incorrectly if working directory path spans two lines
Oh, sorry about that. Apparently, xterm uses a different value for PS1 than gnome-terminal by default. It seems that this issue only happens when color escape sequences are involved, which is why it didn’t happen for me in xterm. However, when I manually set xterm to the same value as in gnome-terminal, I also got the issue in xterm. So, it does seem like a bash issue once again. [Bug 1745273] Re: Cannot open gnome-terminal with long working directory name containing Unicode characters
When I change to that same directory in xterm, it closes just like gnome-terminal. So it doesn’t seem to be specific to gnome-terminal, but it DOES seem to be important that the input prompt fills more than two lines in the terminal to trigger the bug. I’ve tested this on my laptop, and it doesn’t happen there with the path from the original report because this machine’s hostname is shorter, so the input prompt is shorter as well. Using an even longer path, however, the same happens on this machine. The “ä” is a precomposed character. Using your command, the output is 000 c3 a4 0a 005 c3 a4 is the UTF-8 representation of the Unicode character U+00E4 LATIN SMALL LETTER A WITH DIAERESIS. So I’m not sure if that specific bash bug has anything to do with this (since there are no surrogates anywhere in my example), but since xterm is also affected, the cause does seem to be a lower-level component (bash? readline?).

However, for a “viewer”-type application like okular, this is very problematic: – When downloading a file (e.g. PDF) in a browser like Firefox and choosing to open the file (instead of saving it somewhere in the home directory), the browser will typically place the file in /tmp/ and then open it using the default viewer for that file type. Since /tmp/ is outside the user’s home directory, okular is unable to open the file. – When opening documentation which is installed to system directories (e.g. /usr/share/…) along with its corresponding application, okular is likewise unable to open the documentation files for viewing. For example, the “texdoc” program for the TeX typesetting system looks up the documentation for a specified package (typically in PDF format) and runs the default (PDF) viewer to show the documentation. This fails if the okular snap application is set as the default PDF viewer. – Any files on mounted file systems, such as external storage (USB drives, SD cards, external hard drives…), network shares, etc., cannot be viewed with okular. Attempting to open any such files results in a dialog with the following error message: “Could not open file:///path/to/file”. This does not provide any explanation for the reason of the failure. ** Affects: kdegraphics Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown ** Affects: okular (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Bug watch added: KDE Bug Tracking System #389576 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=389576 ** Also affects: kdegraphics via https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=389576 Importance: Unknown Status: Unknown -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1745999 Title: Okular snap package cannot access files outside home directory To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/kdegraphics/+bug/1745999/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
