[Bug 492304] [NEW] kickseed do not handle correctly --recommended option to create swap partition

2009-12-04 Thread stephane
Public bug reported:

While kickseed support kickstart swap partition --recommended options
his implementation is not usable :

With different partition scheme we ever get a swap partition of 96 MB
This impact other system component like the oom killer ...

The issue is present in both ubuntu 8.10 and 9.04.

Here is kickseed code that handle the swap patitionning (partition.sh) :

if [ $filesystem = linux-swap ] [ $recommended ]; then
size=96
priority=512
maxsize=300%
partition_leave_free_space=
else

(I guess --grow is needed as well)

Here is an example of the partition scheme used with kickseed :

clearpart --all --initlabel
part / --fstype ext3 --size=4096
part swap --recommended
part /usr --fstype ext3 --size=10240
part /var --fstype ext3 --size=4096
part /tmp --fstype ext3 --size=100 --grow

Here is the Redhat Specification concerning the swap creation :

The size of your swap should be equal to twice your computer's physical RAM for
up to 2 GB of physical RAM.
For physical RAM above 2 GB, the size of your swap should be equal to the
amount of physical RAM above 2 GB

I get a python code that i use on RHEL to dynamicaly calculate the swap
partition (cause --recommended is not well implemented on RHEL as well) based
on the detection on physical available memory retrieved from /proc/meminfo.
If this code may be useful let me know

regards
Stephane

[Bug 351122] Re: gthumb doesn't work with gphoto (was please disable gphoto2 backend for Jaunty)

2009-07-04 Thread stephane
for Andrew's modification of /usr/share/applications/gthumb-import.desktop file
to work on french Jaunty,
i added a second stroke just before gphoto2 :

Exec=sh -c 'gvfs-mount -u ~/.gvfs/*gphoto2*; exec gthumb --import-
photos'

because in ~/.gvfs , my camera folder's name looks like Montage de gphoto2 sur
usb:xxx,xxx
so i guess it must be likely the same with several others languages
distributions...

thanks for the new gthumb-import.desktop!

Thank you for your help,

[Bug 374694] [NEW] pulseaudio suspend/resume script fails for accounts with 8 char username

2009-05-10 Thread stephane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

The suspend/resume script for this package (located at /usr/lib/pm-
utils/sleep.d/01PulseAudio) will fail if a user has a username longer
than eight characters. This is because it relies on the output of 'ps
aux', which will display usernames longer than eight characters as their
numeric uids. The resulting sudo command generated by the script will
then fail, because if sudoing to a uid, the sudo command would need to
be specified as sudo -u #1000 rather than sudo -u 1000.

I observed this issue on 9.04 (Jaunty). The pulseaudio package version
is 0.9.14-0ubuntu20. I expected suspend to work (as it did in
Intrepid). It didn't. I had a look at /var/log/pm-suspend.log, and now
here we are. :)

The attached diff represents one way of fixing this issue.

[Bug 793224] [NEW] Translation error in Firefox 4 bookmark manager

2011-06-05 Thread stephane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: firefox

I am french and using the French version of ubuntu and for Firefox 4 I
think it would be better if in the menu bookmark the sub-menu Afficher
tous les marque-pages would be written instead Gerer les marque-pages
ou bibliothèque des marque-pages ou même Organiser les marque-
pages... .

In fact when looking to the official french help from Mozilla this sub menu is
called Organiser les marque-pages... .
So I do not understand why the translation under Ubuntu 11.04 is different and
very confusing.

Thank you very much for your attention

[Bug 607039] [NEW] NFS automount failover doesn't work

2010-07-18 Thread stephane
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: autofs5

In lucid, using autofs5 version 5.0.4-3.1ubuntu5, we are having trouble
using failover with NFS. Autofs allows you to specify multiple hosts
with weighting in its configuration files and will fall back to a
secondary host if the first host is not available at mount time.
However, currently on our systems, the mount fails completely. This
functionality does work with our RHEL 5 hosts (which use autofs 5.0.1).
Automounting from a single host does work, but when we supply multiple
hosts, an strace shows that it's trying to connect to the IP address
'0.0.0.0', port 0, rather than any of the hosts we specify.

I have attached the full strace output, our /etc/auto.master file, and
the relevant file from /etc/autofs.d including the multiple hosts.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-03 Thread Stephane
My laptop running 12.04 freezes once per hour, it does not seem to do so
when watching videos with xbmc or gaming but when browsing. I tried
using Chrome instead of Firefox, i tried using kernels 3.3.6 and 3.3.7
but it still keeps hard freezing. I have used Ubuntu for 5 or 6 years
now and i must say each new version has been significantly worse, i do
not care about Unity or glitches or bugs, this is free software after
all, but i do care about system stability. ubuntu 12.04 freeze returns
half a million result in Google, this has gone on for some weeks now, is
there a some info somewhere about something being done about this? I
hate Apple but buying a Mac seems more enticing everyday, i am just fed
up with this shit.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-09-05 Thread Stephane
I am really at the end of my patience here, my system is a E350 Sony
laptop (AMD/HD6300), it has happily been freezing continuously for the
past months almost daily, i tried everything, countless kernel
variations, reinstalls, fucked around with Flash, with the thermal.off
flag, manually installed catalyst drivers...this POS keeps freezing...i
have wasted hours of my time on this, which leaves me with a really sour
taste. The other day i was reading on how OSX allegedly killed the Linux
desktop, well no shit.

2012-07-16 Thread Stephane
Activating Proposed in order to install 3.2.0-27 completely fucked up my
system, i started getting all kinds of splice errors on downloaded files and
even more crashing, spent my Sunday morning reinstalling the steaming pile that
is 12.04
I also tried installing Debian, but, can you believe this shit, the installer
does not work with laptop keyboards, looked up the FAQ, oh yeah we know it
seems to happen with laptops try with APIC/ASPIC off. I really wonder why i am
wasting my time on this shit, after 6 years of Ubuntu my next machine will be
a Macbook.

[Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-07-09 Thread Stephane
This bug does not only affect Intel chipsets, my AMD Fusion laptop
freezes just fine.

To the people considering trying newer kernels, here is what it did for
me, 3.3.6 and 3.3.7 made my system even more instable, it kept freezing,
kernel 3.5 made it impossible to use Unity 3D and forced Unity 2D on me.
So the kernel thing may work for some people but it did not achieve much
for me.

Several people have observed these freezes only seem to occur when
browsing, here is what i did, i sudo apt-purged flash, installed the
FlashAid Firefox extension which basically installs the best version for
your system (64bit in my case) and applies some tweaks, i haven't had a
single freeze since i did that last week.

[Bug 1388339] Re: [HDA-Intel - HDA Intel, playback] No sound at all and streaming going hi speed

2014-11-22 Thread Stephane
I reinstalled ubuntu and the same thing is happening. After some browsing on
you tube sound is not working anymore and some streaming bargraphs (soundcloud
ie) are going twice faster than normal and still no sound.
This bug doesn't seem to affect Mixxx which is a DJing software. Sound still
works with this.
Altough I had this message when starting Mixxx:

 Carte son occupée
Sound card busy
 Quitter Mixxx.

But the software still play sounds. Not anything else.

Thank you for your help

[Bug 1451613] Re: Unity/compiz crashes when locking screen

2015-06-03 Thread Stephane
Hi,

I encountered the same problem since 2-3 weeks now.

My setup :

- Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

- Lenovo ThinkPad T420
+ an additional Lenovo Screen ThinkVision (20)
   + Logitech Anywhere MX mouse

I use the shortcut Windows + L (same as CTRL+ALT+L but less fingers are
needed) to lock my laptop.
I cannot reproduce the issue, but it happens every day.

I have the same crash with Compiz (_usr_bin_compiz.1000.crash)

I tried to update Unity package, but the crash hasn't been fixed.

unity7.2.5 + 14.04.20150 amd64
compiz 1:0.9.11.3 + 14.04. all

2018-05-03 Thread Stephane
Today, I retried "intel-microcode" on Xubuntu 18.04 fresh install and I
was able to reboot 6 times in a row without any freeze.

~$ dmesg | grep microcode

So, it looks that the bug has been repaired by that linux v4.15 branch.

[Bug 1746200] Re: Regression in 2017-07-07 updates

2018-01-30 Thread Stephane
Thanks for the help,

I have checked the timestamps into the 3 logs : It always corresponds to the
successful boot.

"journalctl -b" gives text I can't interpret, anyway it always
corresponds to the last boot (successful).

The Bios version is the most up to date one : v301 (13 oct 2016)

The "quiet splash" option doesn't give any output to the screen when
removed. I already checked that in the past and I re-tested today. I
forgot to mention that the freeze occurs just after the Grub automatic
selection. I guess the crash occurs in between Grub and kernel init.

The bios UI is really limited, and I don't remember going there since a
long time (except for boot priority). Moreover that bug doesn't occur
when the package "intel-microcode" is removed.

Additional hints :
- There is a big chance that I installed Xubuntu from a USB key created with
UnetBootin (I saw it gives problem with Debian)
- I am using the rEFInd Boot Manager on top of Grub

[Bug 1746200] Re: Regression in 2017-07-07 updates

2018-01-31 Thread Stephane
Some tests I just did :

- "journalctl | grep refind > refind.txt" > Empty file

- Currently, I am booting like that : UEFI > Refind > Grub > Linux
kernel

- Chainloading the UEFI directly to Grub (no use of Refind) : gives the
same random bug

- Chainloading the Refind directly to Linux kernel (no use of Grub) :
gives the same random bug and when it passes, it bugs later at a busybox
prompt because I guess that Refind is not able to boot alone an OS
installed on a LUKS partition.

- Install of Debian 9.3 Stable : Boot always works (Linux 4.9 kernel)

- UEFI > Refind > Grub (advanced menu) > Ubuntu with Linux 4.13.0-32 > Gives
the same random bug but then I have a display of 2 lines before the freeze.
Those 2 lines are :
Loading Linux 4.13.0-32-generic ...
Loading initial ramdisk ...

I am wondering if I could circumvent the bug with the use of an old linux
kernel on Xubuntu.
Is is possible to install the 4.9 linux version on Xubuntu 17.10 without
breaking the OS ?

[Bug 1746200] Re: Regression in 2017-07-07 updates

2018-01-31 Thread Stephane
- There is nothing about Refind into "journalctl -b".

- I am not mixing DEs, I use only Xfce.

- What does "S3 recovery" mean ? Samsung Galaxy S3 recovery ?

- The bug occurs since the first boot of that Xubuntu install (at that
time it was the 20180108 Intel CPU microcode), so I won't try to clean
the system. Moreover the freeze occurs before that I have the
opportunity to enter the LUKS passphrase, at that time only the /boot
partition is accessible. So, in my opinion, the only candidates for the
bug are : Hardware - UEFI Bios - EFI partition - Refind - Grub -
Something inside the /boot folder.

Thank you for your help and for all that time you spent to help me.
But I have to admit that I currently need to take some rest away from that bug.
I will uninstall "intel-microcode" for the moment, as anyway the current
version doesn't provide any defence against Spectre/Meltdown. I will see what
the next intel update gives. Also ASUS is supposed to provide "soon" a Bios
update for my computer.

Have a good day,

[Bug 1746200] Re: Regression in 2017-07-07 updates

2018-01-31 Thread Stephane
Some news :

- Install of Debian 9.3 Stable 31 Jan 2018 (Linux kernel 4.9) : Boot always
works
- Install of Debian Testing 31 Jan 2018 (Linux kernel 4.14) : Random freeze at
boot

So considering my investigations until here, I consider that "intel-
microcode v3.20180108.0+really20170707ubuntu17.10.1" doesn't work on my
hardware/software config with a too recent Linux kernel, but I haven't
any clue or detail on what is happening.

[Bug 1746200] [NEW] Regression in 2017-07-07 updates

2018-01-30 Thread Stephane
Public bug reported:

The version "3.20180108.0+really20170707ubuntu17.10.1" of the package
"intel-microcode" randomly freezes Ubuntu at boot (at a very early stage,
nothing is written on the screen).
The number of hard reset of the computer required looks random but it works at
third boot most of the time.

I was previously affected by the 20180808 regression :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/intel-microcode/+bug/1742933
Symptoms are the same.

user@PC:~$ dmesg | grep microcode
[0.00] microcode: microcode updated early to revision 0xba, date =
2017-04-09
[0.986254] microcode: sig=0x506e3, pf=0x20, revision=0xba
[0.986730] microcode: Microcode Update Driver: v2.2.
If I uninstall "intel-microcode" everything is fine.

user@PC:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description:Ubuntu 17.10

This install is relatively fresh as I did it when I was affected by the
20180808 regression.

[Bug 1746200] Re: Regression in 2017-07-07 updates

2018-03-06 Thread Stephane
Some news :

Last week I saw a "grub" package update so I reinstalled the "intel-
microcode" package, the freezing bug is still there on my configuration
but there is one difference.

With the "intel-microcode" package, at boot there is always a message
that appears during approximately 1 second :

error: invalid video mode specification `text'.
Booting in blind mode

It could be related to the fact that I am booting with the "nouveau.modeset=0"
option.
But without the "intel-microcode" package, I can't see (or don't have the time
to) see that message.

Sorry if this message is not related to the bug. I post it in case of.

[Bug 1764286] Re: Boot freeze due to Nvidia Geforce GTX 950M

2018-04-17 Thread Stephane
First, I uninstalled Virtualbox.

Proprietary Nvidia drivers were never installed on my computer, there is
the "nouveau.modeset=0" parameter into Grub.

Then, I have installed :
linux-image-4.17.0-041700rc1-generic_4.17.0-041700rc1.201804152230_amd64.deb
and
linux-headers-4.17.0-041700rc1-generic_4.17.0-041700rc1.201804152230_amd64.deb

There was errors related to Nvidia during that installation (see log
file attached).

Then a 1st reboot worked.

Then a 2nd reboot with the temporary manual removal of "nouveau.modeset=0"
parameter into Grub (key "E" + "F10") provoked a unsuccessful boot with a
command line prompt :
Ubuntu 17.10 PC tty1
PC login: _

So I assume that the answer is :

That procedure also broke 2 things into my Xubuntu 17.10 :

- Ethernet connexion not working any-more

- The Linux kernel version "n-1" is now tagged into the "auto-removable"
category, that would leave me with only one kernel version installed (I
have uninstalled the 4.17 RC1 version).

[Bug 1746200] Re: Boot freeze due to intel-microcode

2018-04-01 Thread Stephane
In my case, the freeze occurs very early in the boot process.
In the case of #1759920, the freeze occurs at login.

Maybe the 2 bugs are related, but the behaviour is not the same.

[Bug 1974093] [NEW] iwlwifi related BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000318

2022-05-18 Thread Stephane
Public bug reported:

This happened on 3 different laptops at approximately the same time. All
laptops were connected to the same accesspoint SSID (WeWork). All
laptops are Lenovo L15 Gen1 AMD laptops. All run Ubuntu 20.04.4.

Packages are:
linux-image-5.14.0-1036-oem5.14.0-1036.40
linux-image-5.11.0-46-generic 5.11.0-46.51~20.04.1

After 30 minutes where multiple reboots were tried, the problem went away.
2 laptops are on 5.14.0-1036-oem, 1 is on 5.11.0-46-generic, all packaged as
provided by Ubuntu.

VirtualBox and AMDGPU are installed on all laptops concerned, but some
of the crashes happened before they were loaded in the kernel.

All reports were acquired from systemd-pstore, no other place had any
information about the crash.

[Bug 997978] Re: KVM images lose connectivity with bridged network

2012-06-27 Thread Stephane Neveu
Same kind of problem here :

Running Ubuntu-servers 12.04 VMs on Ubuntu-servers 12.04 using
KVM/Libvirt over bridges.

Pinging my gateway from a random VM and watching packets with tcpdump on
the kvm host :

icmp is ok on my vnet - ok on the bridge - ok on my bond (active-
backup) - ok on my gateway (reply) - ok on my bond - ok on my brigde
- No packet received on my vnet

brct showmacs mybridge seems to be ok showing my mac:addr (bridge+vm)

I have to ifdown/ifup my eth0 on virtual guest to make it work again til
the next time.

[Bug 997978] Re: KVM images lose connectivity with bridged network

2012-06-28 Thread Stephane Neveu
@Serge

I did upgrade my kernels yesterday evening both on hypervisors and guests so
now I'm running 3.2.0-25-generic on hosts and the same kernel version but
virtual for VMs. Same problem today morning, some VMs dropped out. I'm actually
using virtio everywhere. I'll try to test another one and keep you in touch
asap.
I also tried to run a VMs with the generic kernel (not the virtual one) and I'm
facing the same issue.
Serge as I'm building this new plateform I can say they there is no traffic at
all on my VMs exept 2 guys testing some java stuffs. I almost thinking that VMs
drop out when there is not enough traffic on nics...

I'll keep you in touch.
