[Bug 105390] Re: window manager crashes/does not work

2007-04-19 Thread shirishag75
when I was asked to move the .gnome2/ directory I moved it into the windows
hard disk so there would be no issues. When asked to do .tar.gz did the same
by moving it back but onto desktop so that there would be no issues like that.
Btw I have upgraded to the 1.9.94 but it still happens intermittently
sometimes going from -15 to -12 solves the issues sometimes not. Then have to
resort to repair kernel, enter gdm at the prompt, do some work for sometime,
then do a normal shutdown then the next time I use any of the kernels the
system works. Although the brief flash after logging in still happens. I'll be
doing a clean install day after tomorrow, in case if you guys want me to run
some tests please lemme know.
This is crazy, I thought I had reported this but apparently not,
sometimes when the screen goes blank even the virtual terminals tty1-6 are not
accessible. I have to use magic keys or hard boot . Many a times when I do the
(ALT+SYSRQ+S), then (ALT+SYSRQ+U) then (ALT+SYS+B) to reboot but even after
doing tht most of the times it fails, whenever the screen goes blank I have to
try these 2-3 methods whichever gets me the desktop after GDM is good for that
time, and times after that. Feels like some .config for that session is saved
carried over to the next.

2007-04-27 Thread shirishag75
Hi Timo,
i tried the 2.0 which is on your site. The driver does not change
remains at static 1152*768. Any attempt to change it either via the System
Preferences Screen Resolution applet or by using xrandr to change it to
something like 1024*768 @ 75 hz the session ends unexpectedly (without any
dialog boxes or anything) and one is thrown into GDM login.

[Bug 112892] not able to change priorties

2007-05-06 Thread shirishag75
Public bug reported:

Hi there,
I have been running galternatives but I'm unable to change the
priority when there are alternatives to run it. For e.g. I can use for firefox
as well as epiphany as www-browser and by default it is epiphany. If I want
firefox I can't either lower the priority of epiphany or up the priority of
firefox. which results in me deleting firefox then giving it a higher
priority than epiphany. Although no idea if changing priorities is a bad thing
or not but unless priorities are not changed galternatives is unable to do
anything. I have tried changing from manual to auto to manual back without any
success.

[Bug 112895] There is no documentation about galternatives

2007-05-06 Thread shirishag75
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: galternatives

A click on Galternatives About gives description of the program and a
copyright notice. Nothing about how to work the application, if changing
priorities is a good/bad thing or the way to use the tool effectively.
The man page for galternatives is also pretty scant in this regard. Also
saw in /usr/share/documentation there is nothing besides the usual
changelog.

According to wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTTP_403 :-

The 403 Forbidden error message is an HTTP status code indicating that
the client was able to communicate with the server, but the server
doesn't let the user see what was requested.

An example of descriptive English text that can often accompany such a
response is You don't have permission to access /foo on this server.

Can somebody tell me why are we forbidden to see our own
submissions, or for that matter being able to see some sample
submission. The bug was filed about a yr. and a month back.

[Bug 105169] mouse does not behave, work correctly with hwdb-client

2007-04-10 Thread shirishag75
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hwdb-client

Hi all,
The mouse is a ps/2 port mouse, one has to make an effort of clicking
twice or thrice to click forward to next page for next entry. Now as I have
already sent the submission I cannot test it anymore, but all the time when it
was crashing as well as even today when finally I was able to submit my
hardware details it required clicking around twice or thrice to make it
understood I want to go to next page. Sometimes also had to also click on the

Hi all,
I am currently reading the debian installer guide, one thing which occured
to me is there is also the possibility as we are using the newer/experimental
drivers being used https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LibAtaForAtaDisks . If such a case
happened then it should have been reported long time back. Anyway now when the
RC build will be coming, would do the needful as well as when the final build
is also there. This way the alternate CD installer is tested well.

   3. If for some reason network failure, computer shut-down etc. it should

I guess some kind of hash checks along the way and some things
would have to be improved on the mirror.

[Bug 102868] Re: apport should be mini-ftp client with resuming capabilities

2007-04-10 Thread shirishag75
Although I do tend to agree that it should not be by default, but it would be
cool for the user who is interested in the bug-report.
Lets take the case of user case A whose application keeps on
failing, some x buggy program, so by default apport would be sending but the
user never comes to know that the report never got sent due to some error or
the other.
User B is a good citizen religiously files the bug reports but
at times he gets errors (something like 500 Internal Server after trying to
actually send the bug report for 30 mins.) He does not know the reason why it
happened. He then takes recourse of servers like rapidshare.com but that is
insecure, prone to more failure (no way to do some parity-checking) or
something like that.

  Reference bug #103604 for use-case scenario B.

Point to be noted :- The crash file therein is only 7 MB, I
am on 246 Kbps/64 Kbps unlimited connection. Tried sending the bug-
report at the very least 5-6 times without no result. Once after 2 hrs.
of apport saying it is uploading I get an Internal Server Error 500. At
the end, had to take recourse of rapidshare.com twice but without any
positive outcome (some parity issue or some other thing probably). User
having -1 experience with the whole bug-reporting experiencing with
apport.

Further as we move to feisty+1 or even a bigger bug-report
lets say an openoffice crash (maybe 15-20 MB) reasonable , shudder to
think how I would do it under the present circumstances.

[Bug 102868] Re: apport should be mini-ftp client with resuming capabilities

2007-04-11 Thread shirishag75
While chatting on IRC couple of people did inform that they were
successful on sending 50 MB crash files. Mind you these are the full
crash reports, not the shrinked down version as apport also gives as an
option. Users who are fanatic or fan of some software, for e.g. blender,
OpenOffice.org or something like that would try sending the full report,
as they would want the issues to be fixed in their favorite distribution
Ubuntu. Also perhaps I should have worded my wordings more, it should
behave (back-end) lke a mini-ftp client but for the user give a
simplistic outlook.

2007-04-11 Thread shirishag75
Using version 7.04 . I do not know what u mean by new user , I actually
got that shortcut from micah cowan when he was online. No theme . If you
are saying icon theme then tangerine icon theme, if from the theme for
the whole window then one from the 4-5 stock themes used, will give more
when I am on ubuntu desktop. I did use desktop effects but that was
like maybe 10-15 days back for about an hr. or so. The graphics chipset
is a simple i845 Intel Graphics Express chipset having 8 MB VRAM .
That's it. Would be telling about the stock theme in a while. Please
lemme know if you need any more info.

2007-04-11 Thread shirishag75
ok would try that, just to inform the number of things which were tried so
everybody knows.
actually the command which u gave in the morning DISPLAY=:0 metacity
--replace use to give a warning

shirish @ubuntu $ Window Manager manager warning found in
configuration database is not a valid value for keybinding
toggle_shaded

which escalated to the afternoon to :-
shirish @ubuntu $ Window Manager manager warning found in configuration
database is not a valid value for keybinding toggle_shaded
Window Manager error= Unable to open X display 0

which further escalated when trying to use the same route
(CTRL+ALT+F1) on console :-

shirish @ubuntu $ Window Manager manager warning found in configuration
database is not a valid value for keybinding toggle_shaded

xlib: connection to 0.0 refused by server
xlib: No protocol specified

Further things tried by seb128 :-

gconftool --2 --get /desktop/gnome/application window_manager/default ?

/usr/bin/metacity

failed to get a value for '?' Bad key or directory name '? Must begin
with a slash (/)

was asked if there was any .dmrc directory in /home/username which
was replied in negative

was asked to move the file ~/.gnome2/session which had no effect

then tried sudo apt-get install --reinstall metacity_common which
again did not result into anything better

The only solution which works in the meanwhile is typing
'metacity' without the quotes in terminal brings all window decorations
etc.

Micah Cowan will try moving ~/gnome too will report how it goes but
tomorrow morning, as its already past 12 a.m. here.

What this essentially means is that running metacity by hand fixes
things, but for some reason metacity is either not running by default in
your gnome session, or is crashing for some strange reason. moving
~/.gnome2/session seems like it should have fixed it; but ~/.gnome2
definitely ought to: it's just a bit draconian (though not as much so as
blowing away the user's home directory), since any customizations to
gnome apps that you've done will have to be redone.

Actually it was pretty easy, when I moved .gnome2 out of the way,
by customization to the applications which are saved during the session,
those were gone but i can happily live with that, as more important is that
I got my desktop back. Just to reflect here is my paste of .xsession
-errors now
http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/15175/
Thank you everybody for your help/suggestions. Please
close/reject the bug now.

[quote]
The bug lacks informations like the version of Ubuntu you are using. The
gnome-panel runs in user space and can't change the clock, why do you think
it's due to it? Does it happen if you don't use the desktop? It could be your
computer clock shifting. Does it happen if you don't log into GNOME or use an
another environment? [/quote]

The version of Ubuntu used, Feisty Fawn 7.04 . Ok I do not hink forger
meant the clock applet is due to the panel but he did not know where to

computer clock shifting is concerned, checked both in BIOS XP and

[Bug 90749] Re: Deluge 0.5 in feisty

Ok couple of comments, for me 0.52 does not work for me. Although I think I
uploaded the bug report to tracs do not remember the details atm. I did try the
svn checkout also but even that did not work for me. I did delete the
~/config/deluge/.state file but still it did not work. There were no
instructions on the README as to how to un-install if some issue is there.
Also lets say, a certain version does not work, how to update it to
the latest working copy of subversion. I know both these things are outside the
domain of this bug-report but it would be useful for both of us, as I would be
happy to give you bug-reports if there is a way to that.

2007-04-13 Thread shirishag75
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: usplash

  Hi all,
- I have never had the ubuntu-usplash displayed. The only 2 changes I
have made are in GRUB menu.lst for changing the resolution of tty1-6 from
640*480 to 1024*768 and the other changing my resolution driver to 1024*768 . I
would be posting all the relevant dmesg, lspci, x.org.conf, xorg.log,
xorg.0.old, menu.lst whatever else is required. Please lemme know. Thanx in
advance.

The crashes were due to something with my .gnome2 session so seemingly
unrelated . See bug # 90213 . I have also filed bugs for Live CD showing
incorrect resolution bug #106202 as well as something perhaps related or
not bug #105871 . Thanx in advance

Can I be guided as to how to get the /var/log/casper.log from the beta

[Bug 102378] Re: Not able to boot with usplash

2007-04-13 Thread shirishag75
As asked by hddgh in bug #105871 , sorry that was a duplicate :-

Thank you for reporting this bug. There are some things I would like you
to do:

1. please change your 'vga=' parameter in GRUB to specify the value in decimal
(792, for example, is 1024x768), and then try again;
2. please run apport-retrace on the latest crash dump, and collect the
backtrace, and add it here.

After changing the vga from vga=0x305 to vga=792 both at the defoptions as
well as the kernel which are there,

I got this,

Press Return to see video modes available, Space to continue, or
wait 30 secs.

After pressing return I got the below thing :-

Video Adaptor VESA
ModeCOLSXROWS
0 F00 80x25
1 0F01 80x50
2 0F02 80x43
3 0F03 80x28
4 0F05 80x30
5 0F06 80x30
6 0F07 80x60

Enter mode or 'scan' = scanning further I got few more modes

7. 0100 40x25
8. 0120 132x25
9. 0121 132x43
a. 0122 132x50
b. 0123 132x60

Please lemme know what the issue is here?

2007-03-29 Thread shirishag75
Hi all,
I made a longish post at
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2367180#post2367180 . To put
things briefly, from the moment the Live CD loads, the install happens, the
desktop comes up it all happens in 640*480 . I have an i845 chipset using 17
Philips 107E5 CRT monitor. So each install is from an alternate CD. This has
been the case for Edgy as well as the Feisty Beta, unable to install via the
GUI. Even when everything is installed, I'm able to do nothing as every screen
is cut-off, the only good thing I can do on this is to play mahjong :( No
productive work as every application's windows gets cut I can't access/read
the bottom half. I don't think I'm asking for too much. It's been 5 days since
I've been trying to get it done right :(

2007-03-29 Thread shirishag75
Timo,
I tried to test it, but dependencies error showed up, but I think I'm
getting ahead of myself. First of all I did Ctrl+Alt+F1 so I'm on the cmd line
tty1. The first time I tried to install it gave a conflict error.
Then I gave the command :-
dpkg -i --force-conflicts xserver-xorg-video-intel_1.9.93-1ubuntu1_i386.deb
While the command worked, it didn't do things as the 3 dependencies required :-
libc6 = 2.5.0 ubuntu1 was required while I had 2.4-1
something other which was (=2.3.0) while I had 2.2
and xserver-xorg-core (=2:1.20-3ubuntu6) while I had 1:1.1.0-ubuntu12.1

but not to worry would try it again for sure.

[Bug 99080] apt-get unable to read sources.list

2007-03-30 Thread shirishag75
Public bug reported:

Hi all,
I installed ubuntu 7.04 beta through the alternate-CD. I checked the CD
for defects beforehand it went smoothly. I installed the system everything
booted normally. Now I checked with sources to update, with the Indian server
it doesn't download the package lists, with the main server (american) it
downloads the package list shows the no. of updates needed to get but hangs
there. My original /etc/sources.list is at
http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/12953/plain/ then after advice from people on the
chat channel modified to http://paste.ubuntu-nl.org/12968/ but I'm not able to
update. I get a constant error message even if I change the server from India
to main (US, I guess) or vice-versa. The error message is as under :-

A error occured, please run package manager from the right-click menu or
apt-get on a terminal to see what is wrong

The error message was : Error:Opening the cache(E:Type '??' is not
known on line 1 in sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list, E: The list of
sources could not be read.)

Now please lemme know what/where I'm going wrong. Thnx in advance.

[Bug 99303] goes from 24% to 80% then fails at select install software

2007-03-30 Thread shirishag75
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

Hi all,
I downloaded the 7.04 beta using bittorent. The first time I installed
it, it installed without any issues. Due to certain other issues decided to
re-install. I checked the md5sums given at the site, with a checksum software
which I've at my end. http://www.slavasoft.com/?source=HashCalc.exe . Also
bittorent reported as a clean thing. Then before installing, I checked the CD
for defects. I re-formatted the partitions as I'm aware of the bug
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/partman-partitioning/+bug/94647 . No
guided partitioning, it was all manual. It's a text-based install (no oem
install or F6 expert install) , it proceeds to install the base system
installs it successfully. But the next phase where it starts installing the
rest of the software packages, it waits at a couple of places for long -time,
then jumps, then around at 24-25% it jumps to 86% says the installation
package failed at select install software. I burnt a second CD thinking there
might be some burn issues or something like tht but still the same error is
re-produced.

It does ask me to save the logs but as I'm not so wise don't know how
to save it. If somebody can provide me instructions for the save,
anything else I might not have looked at, feel free to ask. Thnx in
advance.

2007-03-31 Thread shirishag75
I deleted the extra chinese characters/japanese characters but they
seemed to crop up again again. I want to use hindi letters but tht
comes l8ter. I used the alternate CD to set up there is/was no way to
set up the encodings so I guess the default setup includes all the
encodings. Anyways, I tried to re-install the OS from the CD again now
I'm stuck at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/debian-
installer/+bug/99303 which seems to tell me tht something is bad with
the alternate CD. This bug is re-producible each time.
