xterm has been removed from the Ubuntu 17.10 default install.

Bryan, thanks for starting this topic. Sorry for the late response. My
understanding is the only justification for xterm being installed by
default was for the FailSafeX feature which is no longer considered
essential for the Ubuntu Desktop. Therefore, I filed the User
Interface Freeze bug to drop xterm from the default Ubuntu 17.10
install as https://launchpad.net/bugs/1717946

I know we previously had issues where gnome-terminal could fail to work
reliably under certain bad driver cases (it was the case for virtual
machines for some time). I think these issues haven't been a problem for
some time though.

+1 from me for removal.

Remove default app: xterm?

2017-07-21 Thread Bryan Quigley
Xterm takes up two menu items (xterm and uxterm) and doesn't provide
any more functionality then gnome-terminal. In an installed setup,
those two menu items make gnome-shell have 3 pages instead of 2 in my
testing.

The comment in seeds for adding it is "Provide a backup terminal and
complete X env.":

Backup terminal - I don't think we really need a backup and we don't
do it for other apps. There is always a VT and if someone wants to
use a GUI they can install another terminal with gnome-software.

complete X env. - Especially with us considering wayland, if it
actually pulls in anything (that other packages don't) then we want to
bring it in explicitly.

Thanks!

I agree with that. GNOME Terminal is fine and we always have Ctrl-Alt-F{1-6}.
