Re: [ubuntu-art] Ubuntu DVD Packaging Artwork - Getting Close to Final

2011-02-15 Thread Pumpkin Lord
I've attached a comparison of your current linux word and the same word
with manual kerning, so you can decide for yourself if you need manual
 kerning or not.

So I guess I will have to play with manual kerning then. At least with
those bigger fonts in titles. Thanks for suggestion. I never had a
nerves to play any deeply with kernings. :)

And about adding noise, well, I don't know. I'm using noise effect
almost exclusively when gradient banding make me to. Otherwise, very
rarely. I wanted to keep this as clean as possible. No gradients, no
shadows, no special effects. Only the flat layers.

[ubuntu-in] Referencing Time

2011-02-15 Thread Moz
Hello,

I administer a website, which is hosted on a shared plan. The time on
the server is variable and I can not run cron jobs at proper time
using the date command in my shell scripts. NTP support seems not to
be installed. It is a Red Hat OS server. I would like to know if there
is some other way to take a reference time. For example, emails sent
from my local computer which includes a special date string or
something like that, which can be referenced by the shell script? I
use Ubuntu Lucid.

I do not have authority to set date/time on the server, and I have
tried to have the admin change the time, but it only makes things
worse as the changes are not as expected.

Can you suggest a way to run cron jobs at fixed times without using
the system date and time?

Regards

Moz

Re: [ubuntu-in] Referencing Time

2011-02-15 Thread Ninad Pundalik
Hi,

How about setting the cron at a local machine which is always up and
connected and using 'ssh user@host bash /path/to/script.sh' in
combination with a password-less login (i.e., saving the public key of
the local user on the host')?

I'm assuming that you need to run shell scripts, and do it securely.
If it's something simpler, like running some PHP scripts, it might be
easier to use an RSS feed reader or a simple wget/curl call to that
PHP script.

Hope that helps.

Just a thought. /home contains the hidden configuration settings files of
all apps. When you copied from HDD to /home, the existing ones might have
been overwritten. Thus the problem.

Not a big expert, but this came to mind as a probable cause.

Are you sure that the command worked? Ideally it should have failed as
copying anything to a directory outside *your* home directory (eg.
'/home/njain') requires 'sudo'. So either your command should have been:

$ cp -R /media/Elements/home/njain /home/your-user-id

or

$ sudo cp -R /media/Elements/home/njain /home

or you have set world write permission to your root or /home directory
which is highly undesirable.

In any case, I don't think that command should have caused the sound
problem.

Do you remember any error or warning messages being displayed on terminal
when you gave that command?

The error I saw in rhythmbox is configured audiosink bin1 not found, IIRC.

Try running rhythmbox from the terminal, like:
$ rhythmbox

and post the output. It might help finding the real cause of this problem.
Also try googling the error line that you find in the output.

1st reason for writing about this group on this mailing list is to get

Why I have created this group??
* Group shouldn't be bounded to any Distribution like fedora, Ubuntu, etc.
* Each and every year there are atleast 3/4 events conducted by wbut
students. But both organisers and attendees face problem due to the
lack of any common place. Few of the problems are:
1. many students who want to attain these events missed out due to lack of news.
2. if there is any change in date or time then organiser can update
the info on event's wiki (or web) page but if any attendee missed out
those changes, will cause problems.
3. lack of experienced volunteers.
and many more.
Also, a group like this will help to bring forward many hidden talents

which means folks not on facebook can't join.

If you want to have some real service to the community,
come out of facebook and other social networks to build the community.
First, I have though about this. But later on talking with fedora

almost all failed.
Also, I couldn't find any free website i.e., providing wiki pages
where anyone can write (information, FAQ, etc) about Linux and also
providing mailing list. Ya! Group shouldn't be bounded to any

supprimer libreoffice
:http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=436768#p3931737

application/vnd.sun.star.package.bundle7.0..etc...

2011-02-15 Thread John Chiazzese
I imagine the entrance fee is to cover organization costs and maybe
rental fees for the location and other such things. I do think that $20
is a lot and the extra $20 to see the video game musical show is
expensive. I am not sure if I will be paying to see that but I am not
sure yet.

What is more important to think about is the experience of getting to
meet new people who enjoy something as much as you do. Ubuntu has given
me something that I could never replace, a friend that I believe I will
have for a very long time.

Matt: Let me know if you need anything printed or if you need me to burn
some CD's or DVD's also if you need some company at the booth I would
gladly help out.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Printer driver ...

2011-02-15 Thread Barry Drake
Just to say thanks to those who replied. '--force' worked with both
parts of the driver. The driver is not just a ppd. It contains some
library binaries as well. Main thing is, it works. I had a bit of a
problem with the scanner, but after spending more time on the Brother
Linux support site found that the Brother 'scankey' binary (separate
from the actual driver but required for sane), is avaiailable in a
64-bit version. After installing this, the scanner worked OK.

So - grateful thanks!

Regards,Barry.

[ubuntu-uk] DHCP3 Problems

2011-02-15 Thread Simon Swaysland
Hi,

I'm having an issue with a DHCP server I've just set up on a new box running
running Maverick. I was running DHCP on a Cisco 877, but decided to play
with DHCP on my home server instead.

My wife's laptop (windows7) is still requesting it's old IP address,
192.168.0.27, it connects to the interweb and works without an issue, but it
isn't requesting a new IP address. I get this in syslog:

Feb 14 15:13:21 BigDell dhcpd: DHCPREQUEST for 192.168.0.27 from
78:e4:00:69:01:b6 via eth0: unknown lease 192.168.0.27.

Any idea of how to make it forget the old IP address and request a new one?

Cheers,

Simon

Hello Simon,
To get a windows machine to change its assigned DCHP IP address, try the
following commands in a terminal window (Dos box) on your Windows machine:

ipconfig \release
ipconfig \renew

It has been a while since I used Windows, to I may have got the slashes the
wrong way round. If the about does not work, try

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Thank you

Insert your reply into the previous post. Thanks.

If you go back to the Cisco DHCP server does the Win m/c get a new
address ok? If so then there is some issue with your server or the
PC's access to the server. If not then it is not your server but is a
Win problem. In the latter case a Windows support list might be able
to help.

One thing you might try, if it is a Win issue, is to set it to fixed
IP on a different address then back to DCHP. Of course you could
just admit defeat and set it to an appropriate fixed address and leave
it there.

One further thought, if the PC is ok on the Cisco server, how is the
PC connected to your DHCP server? Is it possible that its DHCP
request is not getting to the server? That thought is not consistent
with the unknown lease message mentioned earlier however. I believe
that message is expected when a client asks to continue using its old
address. At that point however the server should issue it with a new
address of course.

[ubuntu-uk] ntlmaps and ISA server.

2011-02-15 Thread **
Hi,

I have put ntlmaps on one of my work machines (Ubuntu 10.04) in order to
authenticate to the work ISA proxy server. Synaptic, apt-get, etc all work
fine,
and many websites also work. There are however some web sites that will not
display at all (e.g. ubuntu.online02.com) and Firefox says it is waiting for
the
website, some sites that display most of the page but never seem to complete
(www.bbc.co.uk) and on yahoo.co.uk, the site says it cannot display as the
browser (Firefox) is not recognised and I should install Firefox.

I also have a work Windows XP machine, alongside the Ubuntu one, which is
connected to the same network segment on the same network switch and which runs
Firefox without any of the problems detailed above. I have spent a couple of
days Googling without much success. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

John

I set ntlmaps up on a machine at a client site last year and it took a fair
bit of tinkering to get to work properly.

If you run the daemon from a command line you can see if there is an
authentication error. Also running wget with the daemon as a proxy can often
give clues as to why a page isn't loading.

[ANNOUNCE] Ubuntu For All

2011-02-15 Thread Alan Bell

Hi all,

The Ubuntu For All project is an idea that has been bouncing about for
a while and the time has come to bring it to life. The project has a
small description at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuForAll in short, it
will ensure that all the Ubuntu teams working on subjects relating to
inclusiveness and outreach are working well and have the support and
resources they need. We are calling a meeting to define the scope and
activties of the group on 25th Febuary at 19:00 UTC in the
#ubuntu-meeting channel on Freenode IRC (reply off-list if you need any
assistance getting set up to use that) The agenda for the meeting is
here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuForAll/Meeting The only thing that is
pre-decided is that Ubuntu For All isn't going to be a council or
governing entity or in any way 'above' the teams it supports.

I have set up the #ubuntu-for-all IRC channel so please feel free to pop
in there any time, the kick off meeting will be in the #ubuntu-meeting
channel.

Re: OpenShot instead of PiTiVi

2011-02-15 Thread Jonathan Thomas
Greetings! I would like to add that OpenShot also puts a huge focus on the
right way. It's not really fair to say that because OpenShot has more
features and more effects, it's automatically not focusing on the
fundamentals. OpenShot has a lot of dedicated developers and contributors,
and we work so hard to make a great product. =)

Thanks!

Yeah, OpenShot seems to be getting a lot of attention, but PiTiVi is doing
a much better job IMHO. Instead of trying to put out features first, they're
making sure they get the fundamentals right. In fact, I think I first
 learned this from Jono: http://gnomejournal.org/article/79/pitivi

'Part of the reason PiTiVi has taken so long to mature is that Edward has
been conscious to build PiTiVi “the right way” and ensure that the
underlying infrastructure that PiTiVi is built upon is mature and stable.'

I'm personally really excited about the next release of PiTiVi. It'll have
effects and transitions and all too:
 http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2010/09/pitivi-video-effects-ubuntu-download/

In addition, PiTiVi's work will benefit other video editors that want to
use Gstreamer, that powerful framework that powers all of Ubuntu's
 multimedia.

I noticed that Byobu is no longer installed by default. Is this a
conscious decision and is the size of byobu so big that its space is

Recently I have been using OpenShot with some good success. While there

I don't say anything definitive on my part, but the some crasher
issues are pretty severe. My main feeling is that GStreamer is a
mature and very widely used framework, while the MLT framework used by
OpenShot is not so widely used. Similar crasher issues I've
experienced and heard from anyone given a try at Kdenlive, which also
uses MLT.

There is also possibly a similar situation with PiTiVi - OpenShot as
with Shotwell - GIMP. If PiTiVi is able, thanks to GStreamer, to
give on average successful small scale video editing for someone just
trying it out, I think it's good. OpenShot though has simpler UI than
eg. GIMP comparatively.

But similar to GIMP, OpenShot would most probably an application
everyone more serious about editing should know - a case for Software
Center or even installer / post-install. I've been thinking that
Software Center should have some post install welcome thing for a
couple of times, suggesting first steps into Your Ubuntu kind of
functionality, offering installing GIMP / OpenShot / Inkscape /
Scribus / Ardour / some top games.

Re: OpenShot instead of PiTiVi

2011-02-15 Thread Jonathan Thomas
I know my opinions are biased towards OpenShot, but I suppose we all have
our biases... =) One of the reasons OpenShot has been so well received by
people is our simple interface and stable foundation. Just to play devil's
advocate, PiTiVi could also be described as crashy. And so could many
other applications that deal with decoding and encoding video. To actually
site some quantitative data, rather than just hearsay,
http://www.webupd8.org/2010/03/best-linux-video-editor.html. A review
posted just the other day:
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/02/openshot-1-3-0-released-cements-place-as-the-best-video-editor-for-linux/
.

I also really like Timo's idea about a post-install welcome screen. Even if
OpenShot never gets included as the default video editor, it would be super
helpful to many users to know that they have another great video editor
choice, just 1 click away. =)

Thanks!

my changes were directly into dpkg, with the intention to incorporate

Regarding launchpad bug 706603 (gem1.9.1 doens't install executables on PATH)

2011-02-15 Thread Zygmunt Krynicki

Dear Moriwaki-san.

I'd like to ask for your thoughts on this Ubuntu bug that affects
rubygems. A few people have discussed this bug on #ubuntu-devel and we'd
like to propose a change in packaging and patches that would affect both
rubygems 1.8 and ruby 1.9.

For details please check the final comments in the discussion. If you
have any objections to this change please add your thoughts there. If
you agree I'd like to ask you to work with me on changing this in Debian
and Ubuntu in a consistent way.

You can find the conversation here:

I added my comment with an action plan here:

I'm sorry for all this. The problem is that Guillem is a single point of
failure in terms of reviewing C code for dpkg.

Thanks to recent work, I'm more at ease with the C part of dpkg and I
fully intend to help him in that task so that we don't miss such
opportunities in the future.

my changes were directly into dpkg, with the intention to incorporate

I'm not sure it would have changed anything. I think you took the right
technical approach. AFAIR the only thing that lacked to me was a sort of
formal specification that can be discussed separately before the
implementation itself.

Most of the blame is on the dpkg maintainers on this one. I do hope we
will see this completed in the wheezy timeframe.

Cheers,

Nothing to report

Changes to fwts (natty development branch):
 * Fix DMAR test: double free error.
 * Tests: smbios, virt, crs, apicinstance - mark tests status correctly.
 * Restructure arg handing - more generic modular and extensible.
 * add --s3-device-check, --s4-device-check options.
 * add --s3-quirks, --s4-quirks options.
 * add --s3-device-check-delay, --s4-device-check-delay options.
 * improve s3,s4 args value range checking.
 * improved progress feedback, s3, s4 tests.
 * s3, s4 tests: add device checking pre/post each cycle.

=== Blueprints: Review of the Stable Maintenance Process ===
New kernels packages were build and uploaded last week for all supported
series. These have been copied to the -proposed and the verification phase has
begun. Verification tags should all be in place today.

=== Status: Cert. Team   ===
We will start next week with a new cycle of SRU testing for Maverick and Lucid,
as soon as the validation phase is finished.
Going forward, if that's possible, we would appreciate if you could subscribe
the Hardware Certification team to the tracking bugs that we need to test
(Lucid and Maverick kernels, non EC2 kernels). Thanks!

=== Status: Ecryptfs  ===
 * Some minor improvements to the base code have been made
 * The longname in header version isn't stable yet as it ate my data last night
:(
 * Still waiting on upstream review
 * the on disk format can not be considered stable as it may change based on
upstream review
 * starting to get wider testing, with latest built kernel attached to bug
 * setting up ppa to facilitate even wider testing, though I am still worried
about this being used by people who aren't aware of potential breakage
 * userspace tools updates to make configuration by users feasible yet to be
done (kirkland has volunteered)

=== Status: Natty  ===
The natty kernel is now at v2.6.38-3.30 (v2.6.38-rc4 based). We are expecting v2.6.38-rc5 to release imminently and we plan on uploading as soon as that is available. Overall we have most of our development out of the way, with just the ecryptfs long
filename work ongoing. It looks like the v2.6.38 final will drop arround A3 so we should have a good period before final release.

Ubuntu Alternate

2011-02-15 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: debconf

While configuring a package that will access mysql database, the mysql
client will use .my.cnf file and if there's a password= line in it it
will take precedence over the entered password in the dialog box. A
warning about .my.cnf would be a nice idea. I spent two hours trying to

You can't prove the absence of faults.

Well, as I said this is working OK for days or weeks. Then something

I don;t have enough data. It's in the range of weeks or months.

Sure, everything works fine.

A driver debug output is really needed!

I'm running it again, but no promises. Reboots are much more frequent
than this misbehaviour.

Note that I'm not the developer of this driver, nor have any acquaintance
 with APC.

Same here. Though I will probably try to locate this bug if we don;t
make progress with the debugging output, either because it does not tell
us enough or because I don't manage to capture it.

I would have thought finding the place in the code where it is trying to
reset the UPS connection wouldn't be this hard.

Re: [Bug 535583] Excessive logging by apcsmart program

SmartUPS 300I NET. I have the serial number (GS9809283199) but no date.

it seems to be a recent model.

 - are you sure this unit is ok?

You can't prove the absence of faults.

this was related to the following question...

  - have you really checked the cabling or made the whole (cable + UPS)
 work
somehow (using APC's software or apcupsd)?

Well, as I said this is working OK for days or weeks. Then something
happens that triggers a bug in apcsmart.

quickly reading back the thread, I can't find these info...

 - what is the meantime between occurrences of these issues?

I don;t have enough data. It's in the range of weeks or months.

as per your previous posts, this seemed more to be a matter of minutes /
hours.

 - is the device reachable (using upsc for example) between issues?

 Sure, everything works fine.

A driver debug output is really needed!

I'm running it again, but no promises. Reboots are much more frequent
 than this misbehaviour.

Note that I'm not the developer of this driver, nor have any acquaintance
  with APC.

Same here. Though I will probably try to locate this bug if we don;t
make progress with the debugging output, either because it does not tell
us enough or because I don't manage to capture it.

I would have thought finding the place in the code where it is trying to
reset the UPS connection wouldn't be this hard.

this is not the problem. This code is in the smartmode() function of
apcsmart.c:
http://svn.debian.org/wsvn/nut/trunk/drivers/apcsmart.c

we see the 5 attempts to go to smart mode ('Y' command), but my aim is to
understand why it is failing, and how to cleanly solve this without
impacting support for other units.

Some more questions:
- how are you handling the device's permissions?
Refer to § II, section 3:
http://git.debian.org/?p=collab-maint/nut.git;a=blob_plain;f=debian/nut.README.Debian;hb=HEAD

Re: [Bug 719260] Re: X509 support for openssh

2011-02-15 Thread Colin Watson
I imagine that the upstream developers will be a lot more interested in
whether it's technically a good idea and maintainable, than whether
companies need it - that's the usual pattern.

You could build your own openssh packages with that patch applied,
perhaps in a PPA.

I'll have a look at that code.

Of course. The problem is that the program is sending the command
infinitely, probably because of the EIO.

 Some more questions:

Refer to § II, section 3:
 http://git.debian.org/?p=collab-maint/nut.git;a=blob_plain;f=debian/nut.README.Debian;hb=HEAD

/etc/udev/rules.d/zzzlpc.rules:
KERNEL==ttyS2,   OWNER=nut,  GROUP=nut,   MODE=0660

The serial line is on a PCI board. It may be a problem of that board,
not the UPS. Which is cleared by closing the device.

I found no code that does five attempts. But this code in main.c,
starting on Line 618:

while (!exit_flag) {

struct timeval  timeout;

gettimeofday(timeout, NULL);
timeout.tv_sec += poll_interval;

upsdrv_updateinfo();

while (!dstate_poll_fds(timeout, extrafd)  !exit_flag) {
/* repeat until time is up or extrafd has data */

upsdrv_updateinfo() calls smartmode().

dstate_poll_fds() checks if there is any file descriptor that is
available. In our case:

select(7, [4 5 6], NULL, NULL, {1, 999837}) = 1 (in [4], left {1,
999835})

FD 4 is the serial line, which is passed to dstate_poll_fds() as
extrafd.

When there is data that can be read from the UPS no code in
dstate_poll_fds() reads from extrafd, there is only code that reads
from the other input FDs. The outer loop above also ignores extrafd.
exit_flag is never set, so it continues. And because there is an active
file descriptor, the select returns immediately (actually it takes two
microseconds).

The solution is to add code that reads all data from extrafd and discards
it because nobody asked for it. I would also close and reopen the serial
line in smartmode(). I would prepare a patch if I knew more about the
I/O abstractions used in the nut driver code. Sorry.

HTH,

[Bug 717643] Re: package qemu-kvm 0.13.0 noroms-0ubuntu12 [modified: usr/share/man/man1/qemu-user.1.gz] failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite /usr/bin/qemu-system-ppc64 wich is also in pack

2011-02-15 Thread Andres Rodriguez
Hi Fabio,

Thank you for taking the time to report bugs and trying to make Ubuntu
better.

I can confirm this behavior trying to install qemu-system on a machine
where the latest qemu-kvm is installed. Apparently, qemu-kvm continues
to ship qemu-system-ppc64 when it should only be shipped by qemu-system.

roaksoax@shift:/var/cache/apt/archives$ dpkg -c
qemu-kvm_0.13.0+noroms-0ubuntu15_amd64.deb | grep system-ppc64
-rwxr-xr-x root/root 3440880 2011-02-11 16:32 ./usr/bin/qemu-system-ppc64

roaksoax@shift:/var/cache/apt/archives$ dpkg -c
qemu-system_0.13.50-2011.02-0-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb | grep system-ppc64
-rwxr-xr-x root/root 3829560 2011-02-07 16:04 ./usr/bin/qemu-system-ppc64
lrwxrwxrwx root/root 0 2011-02-07 15:59
./usr/share/man/man1/qemu-system-ppc64.1.gz - qemu-system.1.gz

Marking this bug as confirmed.
