Re: [Ubuntu-ch] Global Jam
Dear Tormod. in Kuerze finden ja weiltweit die sogenannten Global Jams zu verschiedenen Themen Rund um ubuntu statt: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGlobalJam Haette jemand Lust so etwas in der Schweiz mitzuorganisieren? Raeumlichkeiten gaebe es an der ETH sicherlich. Hi, I am interested in participating, however I see our wiki page only mentions Friday, and I would only be able to join late (or not at all) because of work and travel. Saturday or Sunday would be much better for me. I could help out with guidance or short demos/talks on bug reporting, debugging and bug fixing, Debian/Ubuntu packaging, whatever is of interest. It's quite hard to get rooms at the ETH on weekend, but I would be glad to see you on Friday afternoon. I am planning to split the Jam into (at least) two stages, first a general information about Unity, describing the new features to those who do not already know them, followed by a bug squashing jam on Unity 2d/3d. Newbie questions
Greetings, I sent an email yesterday introducing myself and discussing problems installing Alpha 3 but it is awaiting moderation (it was 50K because attached a log file). I won't repeat that stuff in case it's approved. But I do have questions about getting started in the QA process. I have been reading the Wiki. I signed up for the mentor program but haven't heard back yet so I thought I'd press on. I'm just getting used to all the changes in the UI in Natty. I'm using zsync to update the daily iso. Is it necessary [or helpful] to wipe and reinstall the iso every day? I guess since I'm having install issues, I should, but it's a bit of a process. I've got it figured out using VirtualBox 4 but still can't get it going on real hardware. I haven't tried the trick that worked on VB on a machine yet. Once I install an iso, should I do apt-get upgrade or work with the packages on the CD? What about reporting problems that show up in the logs but not in the UI? Are those worth emails to this list? For example, I'm having trouble with the Update Center so I have to run it from the command line with LD_PRELOAD and in the window I see software-center.apt.aptcache - WARNING - broken packages encountered while getting deps for daily-journal As the new guy, I'm a little shy about filing bug reports until I can figure out if it's me or Natty. Is it better to ask or file bugs that turn out to be my inexperience? I have a lot more questions like these but let's see if this email makes it to the list. I've been reading Wiki's and this mailing list, signed up for the mentor thing, but that seems slow moving, so let's try this list. I need some help or focus to get started. I've read that testing on a virtual machine is not as good as a hardware install, but it seems to a good place to start with an alpha release, especially one like Natty which has extensive UI changes. One can do lots of testing in a virtual machine and we welcome any help! I thought I'd start with VirtualBox and load my favorite packages and get the feel of it before I loaded it onto hardware but I can't seem to get it to load. I'm running 10.04 LTS (Linux jsa 2.6.32-29-generic #58-Ubuntu SMP Fri Feb 11 20:52:10 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux) on a laptop (I5 4Gb) and a desktop (AMD Phenom X6 16GB). I downloaded the latest Vbox from Oracle (4.04). I use zsync to update a few times over the last week, they all behave the same. The install iso boots but never makes it past the first screen Preparing to Install Ubuntu, attached is the VM log, if anyone can see what I'm missing I'd appreciate it. As mentioned in another post you've certainly hit a bug here. I can run Meerkat (Linux meerkat 2.6.35-27-generic #48-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 22 20:25:29 UTC 2011 i686 GNU/Linux) in a VM with the same settings. I've tried a bunch of different ones and both 32 and 64 bit versions. You could test the distribution upgrade process and then be running the development release that way. [ubuntu-in] Mozilla India Launch party
These are great suggestions; however there is something more that needs to be done: 1) Mainstream media is still the dominant channel and if you plan for the maximum exposure, it needs to be engaged effectively with the web campaign. It cannot be wished away and specifically the regional media needs to be tapped. This should also focus on localized flavor of the browser. Most of the users are intimidated with English language and I would suggest that regional flavor of browser should be stressed on with menu options in regional languages. 2) Screencasts are a desirable option; again with the 'overlay of regional flavor'. For example, there is bound to be one person from each state in planned activity in Bangalore! One easy way out can be prepration of a universal document which can be translated in different languages. This would ensure a uniformity of approach and eliminate any confusion whatsoever. 3) One of the most understated developments in Government sector has been a gradual shift to Open Source applications. Can there be some means where a pop up notification or start screen be modified to notify the users of a new version? This would be a major chunk of users who are likely to extend the same to their personal use also. 4) It takes a load of marketing effort and I would suggest setting up a central agency to direct these efforts and more regular posting of the efforts on the mailing lists. This would help to fine tune the suggestions and adapt to the responses garnered. To be honest, I am only a recent convert to FF 4 and truly happy to see the strides made to stabilize the browser with significant gains in performance. Apart from this all, the customizability of Firefox needs to be stressed for slghtly advanced users because they are the ones willing to experiment. Of course, the hardware acceleration for truly geeky as well as the Firefox Sync options for desktop and mobile versions. 5) One suggestion (or idea). Can there be some sort of extension developed that changes the language menu of the browser? For example, on default base installation, a specific language pack/extension be downloaded, the default search engine changed to say Google Hindi or Tamil or Kannada? This would ease the use for majority of the users. This better be a re-startless option developed on Jetpack!! Please feel free to cross post (I am doing it on Ubuntu India List) and add to the suggestions on different mailing lists.

Re: Shall we hide the GUI for Hibernate in Natty?
Kees Cook schreef op ma 31-01-2011 om 13:34 [-0800]: My newer laptop supports hybrid mode, and it will come out of suspend and then hibernate when the battery is critically low after being suspended for a long time. Extremely handy. AFAIK hybrid suspend means that the OS prepares for hibernate (saving memory system state to disk) and then does suspend-to-RAM. The result is that if you wake up the system before the battery runs out, it behaves similar to suspend-to-RAM, but if you wake it up after it runs out of battery it behaves as if you used suspend-to-disk/hibernate. So your laptop doesn't wake up from suspend-to-ram and goes to suspend-to-disk, as there is no need for that (and it would be extremely error-prone). And if you want a definitive answer about this, I suggest you contact Matthew Garrett (mjg59 on IRC) or another linux power management guru... ;) -- Jan Claeys -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel

Is installing drivers on a Live USB version of Ubuntu something that is supported? It seems to me that there are a lot of people who think it should be and I believe it would a useful way for people to test the development release of Ubuntu and the latest drivers. If it isn't though we should stop the automatic reporting of this classification of bug reports[2]. There are also some bug reports[3] that have empty DpkgTerminalLog.txt[4] attachments. How did this happen and can it be fixed? Can these be marked as duplicates of bug 557023? (Provided they are on live media and about installing drivers of course.) My original reason for doing this was because I was going to stores and looking at different hardware under Ubuntu to see what works. I was visiting friends and testing hardware compatability on their laptops. I was submitting checkbox results for machines so that they may feed the Hardware Database. Should this use case be supported? I would think so. Since the modules needed load when the appropriate hardware is detected I think it should be supported. I did a little research on additional drivers that don't come with/in the Linux kernel and posted them. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1329514 Note that I have had problems in the past with these keys. Once such problem occured after using a USB stick from a computer using NVIDIA video to a computer using INTEL video. Once gnome-session starts the background and gnome-panel items and letters were reversed upside-down. I would have thought that's X.org would autodetect hardware before setting up the video server. http://pad.lv/544813 There are two other issues that come to mind with this setup: (Regression) This was fixed and re-appeared. When selecting to install to a USB key in Ubiquity, the installer installs MBR to sda (usb key being sdb). http://pad.lv/549756 When ubiquity makes decisions on what it will install based on the hardware you are running the installer on (e.g. 4GB RAM + Net = PAE-enabled kernel) No bug reported for this. Detecting hardware in the installer seems like a new feature. I'm able to assist with testing and feedback should you require assistance with this important effort to support this use case. Therefore these should be disabled on a live system. This is tracked in http://launchpad.net/bugs/685017, and I'll fix it for alpha-2. I have seen many complains that updating using a key (built with usb-creator) causes the key to be non-usable afterwards. I use usb-creator for the purpose of installing to computers via USB, not running a full installation with the ability to update the kernel. usb-creator works, it does what it's supposed to and fits the purpose of making a USB installer. However, since the image contains update-manager which will inevitably check for updates, we are setting up the user to mess up their system because of live environment limitations. How can we correct this or at least minimize the chances of someone updating? How can we make it clear that there is a difference between a USB CD clone and a USB installation? Announcing Launchpad Squads
We've made some changes to how we organise the Launchpad team! We're no longer divided into application-based teams (Bugs, Code, Foundations, Registry, Soyuz and Translations). Instead, we now have five cross-domain engineering squads: three focused on features and two on maintenance. How does this affect you? -- When you want to speak to someone about a specific part of Launchpad, whether for help, to escalate something or about an operational issue, things have changed a little. Specifically: * For help and any other operational issues related to Launchpad, you should either send an email to the launchpad-users mailing list[1], or file a question on the Launchpad project[2]. (Reminder: these forums are public.) * If your request would benefit from interactive discussions, drop by in #launchpad on Freenode where one of the people working on the maintenance squads will be able to help you. If your request isn't suitable for public consumption, you can reach the same people on the #launchpad-ops channel on the private Canonical IRC server. * To prioritize feature requests and to escalate other bugs, you should contact our product strategist[3]. The Ubuntu Technical Board is in the process of finding someone to represent the Ubuntu project on the stakeholders group that helps the product strategist establish priorities[4]. * You can also always bounce ideas to the developers list [5]. But down-the-line, we'll have much more distributed knowledge coverage across the whole application. How the squads work --- The squads will alternate between development project and maintenance modes. The three development squads will work on longer term projects, usually resulting in new functionality. Once such a squad has finished a project they'll swap places with one of the two maintenance squads. Bugs, operational issues and so on will be taken care of by the maintenance squads. Deciding which development projects to take on will remain the responsibility of our strategist (Jonathan Lange) in collaboration with the Launchpad Stakeholders group. You can find a list of who is in each squad on our dev wiki [5]. [5] https://dev.launchpad.net/Squads Why are we doing this? -- Our app-based teams served us well, but were becoming a liability: * Many parts of Launchapd, such as Blueprint, didn't have a dedicated team and were basically unmaintained. * Each team was responsible for both new features within their app as well as maintenance. With this new structure, we expect to see: * Better cohesion across the application, as one squad will be responsible for the implementation of new aspects across the whole application. * Reduced cycle-time both for bug fixes and for new features as the context-switching will be removed. At this point I'm doing a preliminary call for IRC sessions before the announcement, and I'd like to ask you to contribute with your sessions or suggestions. Upstart 0.9.2 PPA for testing
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi All, As a precursor to pushing this update out to Natty next week, I've updated my upstart-testing PPA with Upstart 0.9.2: ppa:jamesodhunt/upstart-testing Code is here: lp:~jamesodhunt/ubuntu/natty/upstart/proposed-stage2 The major changes (which will be added to (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NattyNarwhal/TechnicalOverview) are... Basic Job/Event Visualisation Upstart provides a new Python script `initctl2dot` which converts the output of the new `initctl show-config` command to GraphViz format. By default, all job configuration files are considered and the links between jobs and events are displayed graphically. Additionally, it is possible to list a set of jobs to graph. Run {initctl2dot --help} or {man initctl2dot} for full options. New Initctl Commands Two new `initctl` commands have been added: 1. `show-config` 1. `check-config` The `show-config` command displays core job configuration details, namely the `start on`, `stop on` and `emits` stanza information. This is useful since it allows users to see how Upstart has parsed the job configuration files. Additionally, the `show-config` command accepts an optional `--enumerate` option which makes it easy to see which elements of complex conditions are jobs, which are events and which are environment details. This option forms the basis of the Visualisation feature above. The `check-config` command is useful for System Adminstrators and tooling to ensure that all jobs are theoretically startable/stoppable. For example, if a job configuration file specified the following complex condition: {} The `check-config` command would flag an error if for example none of the jobs 'C', 'D' or 'E' were available since that would indicate the job in question could never be automatically started (since the start on condition could never be true). Similar checks are performed on events, so if jobs 'C', 'D' and 'E' are available but events 'A' and 'B' are not advertised as being emitted by any job, 'check-config' will generate an error. If no errors are detected, `check-config` displays no output and returns zero. If errors are detected for a job, each condition that is unsatisfiable is displayed with a message. Miscellaneous * A new manual page, `upstart-events (8)` summarising well-known Upstart events. * An updated Vim syntax file has been included. * A Bash completion script has been included for `initctl`. * A new script `init-checkconf` has been provided which allows a user to check an individual job configuration file to ensure it is syntactically correct before installing it in `/etc/init/`. Run {init-checkconf -h} or {man init-checkconf} for full options. * The Vim package {vim-runtime} now includes syntax support for upstart job configuration files. - -- Cheers, James. - -- James Hunt Ubuntu Foundations Team, Canonical. -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.10 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with Mozilla - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iEYEARECAAYFAk16EFIACgkQYBWEaHcQG9eYSwCfXSGgqDlX8F6mN8UONzDHlyVZ LAYAnRivuH8Lj1Q1uuqZNn6u7Csr9RtN =8LZc -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- ubuntu-devel mailing list ubuntu-devel@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-devel

[Ubuntu-BR] configuração do Libreoffice
