[ubuntu-in] Stall at GNUnify

2008-02-06 Thread Amit Karpe
Hi all,
We are trying to arrange Ubuntu and other Stalls or Tables at GNUnify .

Which is too short notice activity .
So we got 1 room for various Projects.
Like Ubuntu and KDE .
Something like FOSS.in project stall or FossConf Demo stall .
But we hardly have any time to contact other Project / Community
representative to be there .

We have few volunteers who will show demo on that stall .
They will also give information about respective community .
If some one is willing to volunteer please contact me .
We have 2 days . (Friday and Saturday )

Please give some suggestion and feedback .

I would think not... Depending on what JVM they are using, it could be good
for expandability, and not needing a different binary for each type of
device. I know sun's JVM is fairly memory intensive.

What is diff between these packages
  1. free-java-jdk

This is a different sdk but is likely related to GCJ
(GNU's Compiler for Java), but has different
 maintainer.

  2. gcj
  3. java-gcj-compat and java-gcj-compat-dev

The GNU's Compiler for Java needs the above two
packages plus additional packages to run Java. (GCJ is
the Compiler for Java and GIJ is the interpreter for
 Java).

I would recommend, installing sun-java5-sdk (now that
it is Free Software (licensed under GPL2; you can
install the source, as well). Also, there's another
alternative, known as Blackdown Java. This was
created, when Sun's java was not under GPL.

If you have Adpet / Synaptic search for Blackdown
 Java.

Thanks .
Finally , I install free-java-jdk package .
Work for small HelloWorld java program .
Need to be tested for more advance stuff .

A small suggestion: Since this thread is related to
your Ubuntu for CS, I would request you to do the
 following.

Let the distro be as it is. Since, you plan to give
development tools to CS students, you could create and
Apt-ON CD for them, and distribute it with the sources
of those tools on that CD. Imagine, the advantages
 they get!

I can think of doing it this way. Considering, that
you have unlimited data transfers on your internet
connection, you could use apt-get to *download* (set
-d option) all the necessary packages.
You can then create a document on how to use the CD
for installing software and put it in the same CD.

Yes, this add on CD idea is next phase in our Project.
So package which are too big eg. Eclipse . will be on add on CD .
Also I expect students will use this Distro as Live CD for first few weeks .
Once they got enough confidence then they will install it .
In that case install+addon CD will give more advantage to students .

Could you suggest more packages/tools !!!

That CD will be like /sone pe suhaga/.

Ya , sure .

  IDLE
  Screem

This is good list. Since I am now working in software industry for
some time, I am suggesting some packages from that point of view.

Ethereal/Wireshark - This is perhaps one of most used network packets
 analyzer.
Planner - Although MS Project is perhaps more widely used, this will
at least give students an idea of project planning.

Good suggestion , I will add this in my todo list

More java related tools if possible like ant, tomcat etc. Please don't
include them if they depend on non-Free java implementations.

Could you explain more on this ?

Nice to see good responses / suggestions .
thanks .

  And LAMP

You mean AMP. L was already there. :-)

  mplayer and xmms .

Please note that you are promoting restricted formats by including
xmms and mplayer. Not only this against Free software philosophy, it
also may be illegal in some countries.

Plz suggest me alternatives .
Our end user are Indian college students , so if we have some law
against restricted formats plz let me know . And about other
countries , we can't do anything .

Waiting for reply .

With lots of small tools/packages for any developer .
Also we had added documentation for any New Developer in GNU/Linux World .
And with some CS Linux Wallpapers ;)

Now We need web space to host this .

See if you can learn to create a jigdo template from your ISO. That
way you won't have to host the ISO or packages anywhere. Jigdo will
download pieces of the CD from official ubuntu mirrors and then
 construct the ISO.

Most likely, yes. I will confer on this with Raj Mathur, who
manages the server in order to ensure that it does not overload
the server. The server is also hosting Newsrack, so that you
might find it slow at times. However, it is better than nothing.

Please register yourself, and anybody else who is to be part
of the project, as developers on the site,
http://code.indlinux.net . Once you are approved (should take
at most a day), please submit a project proposal, and we should
be able to take a decision within a couple of days at the
outside. All hosted projects need to be under an OSI-approved
licence, but presumably that is not an issue here.

Thanks for all you have offer us .
Give me little time .
I will do it .

 Gora

They are since patents on software is not valid in India. However
win32codecs aren't and you would need to use ffmpeg.

Thanks .
So we are free in India .
Lets hopes India won't accept patents on software .

You have to seek some one like Jono Bacon, Ubuntu Community Manager.
But am afraid he is very busy. You can check into #ubuntu-locoteams
channel and just ask whom to contact. Some one will be able to help
 you.

Thanks .
If you have any mail id , plz share with me .
Or I will try with #ubuntu-locoteams .

For a release why you need to have an online image ? You can very well
go with a CD version and then host the image when people feel
comfortable with your distro. Seriously students are not going to
download the images, burn them and try using. They would rather prefer
it to be available as CD itself if you want them to give a shot. Just
 IMHO.

Yes, you are right .
We want website and all other things sets so other experts will write reviews .
So more and more ppl download it and test it and write comments or reviews.
And community will start working on it .
As of now we are working on Beta but again after 18 Oct we have rework
lots of things. So we want all these things .

[ubuntu-in] JDK for CS Ubuntu

2007-10-10 Thread Amit Karpe
Hi all,
I am trying to install Java Dev. Kit ( JDK ) for CS Ubuntu .
As I have limited space , I don't want to use Sun-Java5-jdk .
I had gone through https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Java and
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/JavaPolicy and also all that I get from
http://www.google.co.in/search?q=ubuntu+java+alternatives

Which JDK I should use ? As I have very limited Space for my Live CD .

What is diff between these packages
1. free-java-jdk
2. gcj
3. java-gcj-compat and java-gcj-compat-dev
