[ubuntu-in] Correction in mentioning linux (Please mention it as gnu/linux)

2011-01-26 Thread Ganesan Venkata Subramanian
Hello All

It is observed in the ML that every body is using the term LINUX instead of
GNU/LINUX. Its should be corrected because GNU represents the GNU utils
running over the LINUX Kernel. So we should attribute our credit to both the
parts which makes such a beautiful OS. Hope this will be followed.

Thanks Regards

[ubuntu-in] Fwd: Correction in mentioning linux (Please mention it as gnu/linux)

2011-01-26 Thread Ganesan Venkata Subramanian
Hi All

I think i should make a statement here. What makes an operating system. The
kernel as well as its utilities. Correct me if i am wrong. while saying
linux we are talking of only the kernel. Then where is the mention of the
utilities which make up the os. It is like mentioning the car engine which
represents only a part of the car.

Thanks Regards

This has always been a huge debate.
I think I should start referring it as GNU/X/Compiz/Gnome/Linux instead
 of Linux.

 Well said Manish

in fact my one liner was not meant as a neighborly suggestion it was
to point out at the absurdity of the whole thing.

Well said both Ram and Manish. Thanks for the detailed email !

 Hi

Am helping a friend install Ubuntu on his new dell 14r 4010 SRS laptop

The basic install has happened well , no issues

The only issue is ethernet is not working.

Funnily there is wirless broadcom driver that needs to be installed
for wifi to work - and after installation wifi works but ethernet
 continues to not work.

Have not found any link (via googling) to indicate how to recitify the
 ethernet not working.

The ethernet works on the windows side and on other Linux machines
(like the one i am typing from)

 thanks
