become free. Usage count = 1

I am forced to power off the computer manually as it becomes
unresponsive.

I'm not sure if this is a NetworkManager problem, or an issue with the
driver.

Thanks for reporting. Well, of course the atime will be different as you
are accessing the files when you transfer the files from/to FTP. The
mtime is dependent on the FTP server. I know of the MDTM ( I think ) FTP
command but that only reads the mtime. I know of no FTP commands for
setting mtime. So, I'm going to mark this invalid.
