Hi, In maverick, how do you get out of the menu on the top panel once you right arrow into it? I hit escape twice and get to the same menus, but I can't get back to the point where I can use alt and f1. 2, I don't see a orca directory in my home directory anymore. here is a rough draft of the guide
Hi, I will be gone for a few days, but here is a rough draft of some things I put together for a guide so far. I hope this will be useful. I will work on this more when I get back. The following was done in a few minutes time, but I will clarify things better when I add more Written by Michael Coulombe. A basic guide to Orca and Ubuntu. X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 080807-0, 08/07/2008), Outbound message X-Antivirus-Status: Clean This is my first attempt at putting a guide together for new users. Note, I hope this information will be helpful, but I do not guarantee any of the things listed here to work. Use this information at your own risk. In other words, I will not be held responsible if anything happens. This guide is free. Feel free to give it to anyone you want to give it to. You may also feel free to add to, word better or improve this guide. Ok, with that out of the way, here we go. I started using Ubuntu a few years ago and have been given a lot of help by others on and off the Ubuntu list and the Orca list. So I thought I would share a little of what I know about Linux for those who are thinking about giving it a try. This guide will include some of the things I have found to be useful when using Linux. Since I use Ubuntu, I will be talking about that operating system, but there are several good Linux distributions out. Ubuntu for example is a completely free operating system. This means you can share it with anyone and install it on as many computers as you like. I am assuming you know your computer, and know how to do things like getting it to boot from the CD, so I will not go in to computer language in this guide. But I will tell you the easiest way I have found to do things. A few notes. Linux has a lot to offer, and it is a wonderful operating system for the blind. It is getting more accessible all the time, but there are some things you should know right off before starting to learn it. Ubuntu is a Linux operating system. You are not using windows and should know you will have to learn a few things. In order to take full advantage of the Linux operating system, you will have to learn to use the consul, which is known as the terminal in gnome the graphical desktop. If you do not want to learn the terminal at all or do not have patience, you should probably stick with another operating system. If you know dos, learning the terminal should be fairly easy for you. If you do not know dos, you will have a little to learn. The terminal is used by typing in commands. There are a lot of very good programs that run in the terminal, and at times the terminal can make your Linux experience easier and more accessible. For example, updates can be obtained with speech feedback easier from the terminal. Wile we are on the subject of speech. Remember you are not using a windows screen reader. While you may find some of Orca's commands similar, it will be different from a windows or mac screen reader. You should also know that Orca and Ubuntu are always being improved. If you don't like something now, it may be to your liking in the next release. With that said, lets get to the operating system. First of all, I suggest downloading the latest live CD or DVD image of the latest final release of Ubuntu. The nice thing about Ubuntu is that you can try the operating system with out making any changes to your computer. In fact you can actually use the live CD to get files off of your computer if the operating system crashes. Running the live CD. Once you write the live CD image to a disc do the following. First boot your computer from the CD. The drive should stop in a short time, and you will be in the language menu. English is first, so I will use it for these instructions. If you do want English, press enter once. Next press the f5 key and let it go. Then press the number 3 key and let it go. Now press enter twice. The system will boot in a few minutes, but Orca usually doesn't start. Once the computer is booted, do the following. First, hold down the alt key and press the f2 key, and then let both keys go. In a few seconds type Orca and press enter. When it comes up speaking, you can inter the preferences menu and make your choices. I suggest quitting Orca after you make the changes and restarting it using the steps listed above. Now you can play around with Ubuntu and see if you like it. Installing Ubuntu. As of this writing the installer doesn't work with Orca from the desktop. However, there is a release of Ubuntu you can download that you can install with Orca. The following are the instructions for installing the original Hardy release. Installing Ubuntu hardy with Orca. Note, this only works with the original release. Put the CD in the computer and turn it on. Once at the boot screen you will be at the language menu. English is the first choice. If you need another language, get
I may have found a fairly easy way to install ubuntu with orca
Hi, this is some info that I discovered by accident, but it may provide a way to install intrepid with orca. I didn't have time to test this, but will in the next few days. I discovered that if you enable accessibility on the hardy live cd with f5 and the number three keys when you boot the live CD, you can set up the root account and log into it like you can on a installed system. However, for some reason if you do not enable accessibility until you run orca after the live CD boots. You can still set up the root account, but for some reason you can not log into it. I will test this later, and if ubiquity works ok we should have a way to install with speech even though it will mean setting up the root account first. I really don't know why this can not be a option by default. The other thing I don't know yet is if installing from the root account will have any effect on the install process. Anyway I just thought I would share that information. Mike. -- Ubuntu-accessibility mailing list Ubuntu-accessibility@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-accessibility

When I install speech-dispatcher and restart, I loose all speech and do not even get the login sound. I did try disabling software sound mixing, but this didn't work either. The python-speechd is installed. Has anyone else had problems getting speech-dispatcher to work on a laptop. ubiquity question
Hi, after getting updates today, I found that ubiquity now works again like it use to. My question is, does it now work on the live CD as well. please egnore my post about ubiquity
Hi, I guess that was a fluke. When I rebooted, orca no longer spoke when I did orca --no-setup in the terminal. I should have tried this a time or two before posting that it worked. Sorry about that. ubiquity, how is it coming?
Hi, I have seen a few updates to ubiquity in the past two weeks. I installed it on my installed ubuntu system so I could watch it's status. Anyway, I have seen a few updates lately when I do aptitude dist-upgrade. My question is, are these just updates to the program, or do they have to do with making it accessible with orca? I still can't get speech unless I run it from the root account, but I'm not even sure if it will run from a user account when it becomes accessible, since there really wouldn't be any reason for it to. windows installer
Hi, just a update for anyone who is interested. I have been experimenting with the ubuntu installation I did from windows a few days ago. So far, I have to say it seems pretty stable. The windows installer was very accessible, and the system seems to work fine. One thing, there is no way of knowing when the install is finished. It use to be you could press enter and if the install was done, the CD would come out. Apparently this has changed. Even when I installed from the latest live CD on a linux partition, I had to have a sighted person click restart before the CD would come out. windows installer
Hi, so did orca work when you started it manually. Also, after you rebooted, how long did the installation take. I can't see the screen, and after rebooting and choosing ubuntu, I waited 10 minutes and assumed it wasn't working since I heard no sounds at all. Was the install fully automatic after you rebooted, or does something have to be chosen. Thanks, Mike. -- Ubuntu-accessibility mailing list Ubuntu-accessibility@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-accessibility

a question about the cd
Hi, I see on the latest live CD, when I am in windows there is a menu. It has a choice to install inside of windows, and even offers a access menu. Has anyone used this yet. If so how does it work, and how do you start ubuntu after installing in windows. I thought I would ask before trying this. Mike. X-Antivirus: avast! about the windows installer
Ok, I tried the menu option on the live CD that says it will install ubuntu in windows. This is very accessible, and guided me through the process. However, after rebooting. I don't see a way to start ubuntu. There was a win boot directory, but running that file didn't work. Any ideas. Mike. X-Antivirus: avast! a problem with the live cd
Hi, I downloaded the latest live CD yesterday and found the f5 and 3 keys do not cause orca to start when ubuntu loads. This was a handy feature for those who know very little about linux. just some info about xfce and orca

a question about the live cd
Hi, is there a way to enable the root account on the live CD. On my installation of ubuntu, ubiquity works when I am logged in as root. live cd question
Hi, is there a way to get the live CD to copy itself in to ram and run from there. I think fedora now has this feature and wondered if ubuntu also does. just some info that may be of interest
Hi, I am pleased with what I have seen of hardy so far. Shared folders now works correctly, and I found that some of the admin apps now work with out having to login as root. For example, sharing folders, time and date, and a few others. Users and groups also works, but for some reason the users are not added. I guess this is still broken, but the terminal ap for doing this works fine. The only other problem I found is that Orca starts like it should when you add it to sessions, but after starting it often crashes. Starting orca again works fine, and it doesn't crash. It only seems to do this when it is in sessions and the system boots. Anyway I thought this info might be useful to anyone wanting to try the version of ubuntu now being developed. From what I have seen so far this one looks very promising where accessibility is concerned. is there a update on the live cd
Hi, is there any news as to when we will be able to install the live CD with orca again. I to found the way listed no longer works. Just for the heck of it, I installed ubiquity on my computer that has ubuntu installed on it. I used a live CD to install with the help of a sighted person. The CD is from three days ago. Anyway when I login as root I am able to run ubiquity. But, when I kill and run orca as we have to do when installing from the CD, orca does not speak like it did a few weeks ago. Maybe a work around would be to enable the root account on the live CD. Mike. X-Antivirus: avast! I have a question about adding users
Hi, I am using the latest version, hardy. I can add users fine using the add user from the terminal. However, while orca now reads everything in the add user settings in gnome. After I add a user and press the okay button. The user isn't added. I don't get any speech that tells me there was any problem either. My question is, has anyone else run in to this problem. If so, did you find the problem. It is easy enough to add users from the terminal, but this feature now talks in gnome, and should work. broblem seeing shared folders from a windows machine
Hi, does anyone know which file I have to edit to make shared folders browsable from a windows machine. I don't see any of my folders on the ubuntu computer from a windows machine. sharing folders
Hi, I see the shared folders setting is now red by orca. Here is the problem I am running in to. I installed the shared folders for linux and windows as it said. If I go to shared folders It seems to be okay. But, if I go to share a folder, orca says shared folders not installed. It gives the option to install but this doesn't seem to work. Also, I notice a lot of apps now have this unlock button on them. Is there a way to use this with orca. Enter doesn't work. users and groups problem
Hi, has anyone used the users and groups setting in hardy. It doesn't seem to be accessible like it was in the past. It seems to be different because there is a unlock button now. Pressing enter on it does nothing. I assume this is how you get to the area to add users and change settings. Anyway is there another key I should be using on this button to get orca to speak it's content. just a idea
Hi, I have heard a lot about installing ubuntu on the list and had a idea. Since many newcomers don't know much about the terminal. Would it be possible to write a script that a person could run from the desktop of the live CD. What I was thinking is this script could put them in the terminal, kill and restart orca with the no-setup setting, and launch the installer. I don't know how hard this would be to do, or if my idea could be done. But if it could this would provide a way for those who don't know anything about linux yet to get the install started. Mike. -- Ubuntu-accessibility mailing list Ubuntu-accessibility@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-accessibility
one more thing
Hi, I forgot, the idea I just mentioned would assume a person already had orca running on the live CD, and I assume the script would only be able to kill orca if the setting in orca was set to exit with out conformation. orca
Hi, I got updates today on my system with the latest ubuntu, and found that orca now talks. I also noticed that some of the admin apps now speak. I haven't had time to play with this much, but one thing I did notice is that when a app didn't speak orca crashed. I was able to restart it again, but maybe there could be a way in the future for orca to start again on it's own after a crash. I think voice over in the mac has this feature. Anyway this release already looks promising. Mike. -- Ubuntu-accessibility mailing list Ubuntu-accessibility@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-accessibility
