The info needs to be there on the disc for it to be retreived. Most CDs
don't have that information. CDDB/FreeDB exist to provide that information,
based on other details from the disc.

Second (maybe unrelated) why can't i browse an Audio CD like a
  regualar disc ??

Because Audio CDs don't have a file system.(Audio CDs outdate PCs! CD-ROM
 drives came much later!)

i have a cd Cafe De Flore and Sound Juicer shows all the track details
   nicely - how come ??

these details were available in Sound Juicer not wincedoze

It must have CD-Text information on the disc.(an extension to the redbook
standard that regular audio CDs use.)

 Hi

Have been wondering what software is there that shows the track details
 that are on audio cd's

the audio cd's open by default in Sound Juicer and very rarely do i get
 the track details

 so i i tried installing cd-cat. cdfs-src (too complicated),cd discid etc

but nothing seems to work and i just get unknown album, unknown tracks.

So whats the solution and advise / tips

Audio CD's don't have any track details. Sound Juicer retrieves track
details from online databases such as Musicbrainz, provided the
details are available for your CD. You will need to be online for
retrieval to work.
Musicbrainz is community managed database, anyone can register and add
details for the CD. There is some menu item in sound juicer which will
let you add details yourself.

So what does sound juicer retrieve, just something it has in its database

How does oen get the details from an aduio cd which are present on it
- as when we play it with a cd player or in wincedoze ??

i have a cd Cafe De Flore and Sound Juicer shows all the track details

I think winamp and windows media player have facility to retrieve
details from servers. Look for something called CDDB in preferences.
But it has been really long time since I used windows so can't tell for sure.

AFAIK, every album cd has a unique identifier. The data is tored in
database against this identifier. So sound juicer just uses this id to
retrieve details.

Re: [ubuntu-in] Retrieving Track details from Audio CD's

2008-06-02 Thread Linux Lingam
[snip]

a) i prefer freedb over CDDB. you may web-search to find out the
differences between them.

b) almost all lookup client software tend to look up a local
subdirectory first, and then go to freedb or whatever you've set,
next.

somehow, i tend not to like the idea of my client software doing these
lookups, so have stopped this ability in all my software. whenever i
do wish to lookup details of an album, i actually go to amazon.com or
to other music sites, and manually look up details of tracks, and type
them in.
cumbersome. quirky. fun.

some day, try out last.fm. nothing to do with this, but the 'similar'
feature is a logical extension of a mere lookup feature.

You can.
 cdfs:
Homepage:http://www.elis.rug.ac.be/~ronsse/cdfs/
Description: A file system for Linux systems
that 'exports' all tracks and boot images on a CD as
normal files.
