If not tried already, search/post on the forums with the details of
the hardware, you might be able to find something.

Hi Uphaar, can you tell me how you installed the Wifi Drivers? I tried and
failed miserably.. It does not detect the device for me..

Hi Jayanth,

The restricted Atheros driver was enabled by default (on Gutsy). Check
the Restricted Drivers Manager and see if it is enabled.
But like I said, I've not tested/used it - so unsure if it is any good.

[ubuntu-in] Ubuntu experience on Acer Aspire 4520/4710

2007-10-30 Thread MailGants yahoo
Has anyone used the Acer Aspire 4520/4710 with Ubuntu Fiesty/Gusty? If so
please let me know and share your experience as I plan to go for it
and don't want to get stuck with issues of drivers etc. I did search
the archive and it came up with one thread (Jun 2007) discussing it.
Anupam Jain had been positive about his experience with his Acer
notebook, but others had a different story. Any experience with this
particular model??

At a price (of 31K for 4520, 35K for 4710) it seems to be the best
value for money. The basic
config is [ for 4520 - Athlon 64 X2 (1.7GHz)][for 4710 - Pentium dual
Core T2020], Nvidia
nForce 610M chipset, Nvidia GeForce 7000M, Monitor 14.1-inch
WideScreen, 10/100/1000 Network Card, 56k Modem, 802.11 b/g Wireless
LAN, Bluetooth 2.0+.

Though google came up with some good reviews, I could not find much on
Linux experience on it (it comes with some Basic Linux - Linpus Linux
or something). The site at : http://priceguru.in/archives/features/895
mentions:
In other things, we tried to run select live distros (no need of
installation) of Linux including the popular Ubuntu 7.04.
Unfortunately, Ubuntu too didn't have the needed drivers built-in for
graphics, WiFi, LAN, etc. Without managing internet connectivity
through LAN/WiFi, finding a solution for Ubuntu was very remote.

Would be grateful for advise/feedback.

TIA

Hi Subash, I use an Acer 4520.. Its realy hard to setup the WLAN on the
laptop.. Was using Feisty.. Bluetooth, Sound, Graphics Drivers all were
slick... Just the WLAN was impossible! I've completed downloading Gusty..
Should be installing Gusty tonight.. Will let you know my experience with
that! :)

The performance of the laptop is AMAZING..

FYI, there's a slashdork article today about Ubuntu harming laptop
HDs, see http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/10/30/1742258

Also there's a wiki page with some discussion and workaround

Hi Subash,

I'm running Gutsy on Acer Aspire 4520, and it works well:
Video - GUI install works, then you can get full resolution with
restricted driver (present in Gutsy). May need little
re-configuration.
Audio - Works, Needs slight configuration.
Webcam, Mic - Work.

However, I do not have any way to test Wifi/Bluetooth at the moment,
so can not comment on that. The are detected properly with drivers
though.

There are some quirks I faced, but no show-stoppers for the things I've tested.

Follow this thread for more details:
