Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Official end off Ubuntu Phone - Please read this because this is sad....

2017-04-07 Thread miguel pires
I really don't think crowd funding is going to work. Unfortunately to me,
one off a lot of pp that have participated in the crowd funding for Edge,
and have a E4.5, believing in the company (Canonical), i feel that this was
a sort of

betrayal.
Betrayal in the phone/convergence, in the Ubuntu with Unity (the
reason way a switch for Linux), etc...
Betrayal because if they ask for money, probably everyone will help,
but they choose to let pp abandoned so they (The pp u make this
decision) don't deserved my money, time and commitment.

Sorry, I'm really angry about this, not to the team/pp that make the
product, but to the pp that betrayal the trust of many!

Miguel

Yes, any Free Software product can be turned into a community effort. But
if the problem is a lack of a revenue model, then I think adding a revenue
model would be a smart move. So I would rather imagine that the team who's
been working on Unity 8 start a business and sell subscriptions. I
definitely wouldn't mind paying a small fee each year for the continued
support of my phone and desktop.

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Official end off Ubuntu Phone - Please read this because this is sad....

2017-04-05 Thread Andrew Penkrat
I really liked the idea of convergence. Ubuntu Phone also served me as a
good fallback alternative for Sailfish OS. Now there's no choice for mobile
and no convergent Linux at all which makes me sad.

Some info for those interested in switching to Sailfish now:

   - Small list of officially supported devices at https://jolla.com/
   - Sailfish for Sony Xperia devices (starting with Xperia X) to become
   available in June
   - If you're ready to devote your time to porting Sailfish to your phone,
   there's a porting guide here https://sailfishos.org/develop/hadk/ and
you're likely to find help at #sailfishos-porters IRC channel on freenode

Best regards,
Andrew

When he says ditching unity, does he also mean the unity desktop?
I actually like the unity desktop, there are many distros with good
gnome desktops, I use ubuntu as desktop mainly because unity has matured
nicely.

But I guess I will have to find their mailing list now.

Thanks to Shuttleworth and the Canonical teams for the attempt.

So even Canonical employees were not informed of this?

Mark's post lacks details though. What will happen of Unity 7? Mir?
And how switching back to Gnome by default reflects on the stated will

Re: [Ubuntu-phone] Official end off Ubuntu Phone - Please read this because this is sad....

2017-04-05 Thread Paul Tait
Can't say I am surprised. I think we all knew this was coming, we were just
in denial. With the end of support for the phones and no new devices
planned it was inevitable. I think we were hoping that phones would be able
to continue in some form because of Unity8 but this puts pay to that too.

I guess we just hoped that this would be the one project that Canonical
actually sticks with and sees to fruition despite their track record.

You have to wonder about Mark. He has great vision, but just lacks the
gumption to see things through, or further than his initial idea.

I think this may be the final nail in the coffin of Ubuntu for me. I'm
tired of the let downs. Time to move on.

Paul.

2017-04-05 Thread Nicolas Delvaux
This is especially confusing since just today there was another blog
post explaining what is being worked on for Ubuntu 18.04 regarding X
apps in a Unity 8/Mir world.
http://gould.cx/ted/blog/2017/04/05/X11-apps-on-Ubuntu-Personal/

So even Canonical employees were not informed of this?

Mark's post lacks details though. What will happen of Unity 7? Mir?
And how switching back to Gnome by default reflects on the stated will
to invest on the desktop? Because it may also be interpreted as "ditch
the current default Ubuntu and replace it by Ubuntu Gnome".

I hope some clarifications will come.
