I think the problem is solved: I updated the system with third party
canonical repositories on, and the bug disappeared. Now I can see the
windows printers.

[Bug 374537] Re: Munin-node have a empty /etc/munin/plugins folder

2009-07-01 Thread Thomas R. N. Jansson
As I wrote earlier: It was a fresh install of Jaunty. I just did a
clean update from hardy. I just purged the installation and reinstalled
it so you can see if there is anything usefull.

I formated my root partion and installed jaunty from scratch, so the
problem is quite valid.

[Bug 394164] [NEW] uninstallable: incorrect dependencies after security update

2009-07-01 Thread Thorsten Glaser
Public bug reported:

Both hardy-updates and hardy-security contain libsasl2-modules
2.1.22.dfsg1-18ubuntu2.1
whereas hardy contained libsasl2-modules 2.1.22.dfsg1-18ubuntu2 (according to
a-c policy).

When installing a fresh system with security already included (after all, no
need to first install
from hardy then upgrade, I mean, why install packages twice?) the system is
uninstallable:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
  libsasl2-modules-gssapi-heimdal: Depends: libsasl2-modules (=
2.1.22.dfsg1-18ubuntu2) but 2.1.22.dfsg1-18ubuntu2.1 is to be installed

[Bug 394211] [NEW] Reporting CGIs incorrectly calculate start or end time for periods spanning changes to daylight time

2009-07-01 Thread Mark Goldfinch
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nagios3

I've discovered a Daylight Savings Time bug within the avail, histogram,
summary and trends CGIs.

To reproduce, run a custom report timeperiod for a duration which spans
migration into or out of DST. As an example using NZST either 1st Apr
to 30th Apr or 1st Sep to 30th Sep. Note the start and end time, either
the start or end time will be an hour out from what one would expect.

Please see the attached patch to fix. The problem arises from using the
generated tm_isdst flag from calling localtime(current_time) within
compute_report_times(). It should be noted setting tm_isdst=-1 is used
elsewhere within these CGIs already.

This bug is present in intrepid, jaunty and will be present in karmic
too. It is also present the latest stable upstream (3.1.2). I've
seperately raised this issue on the nagios-devel mailing list.

[Bug 389909] Re: Nautilus can't browse local network if ISP uses DNS redirection

2009-07-01 Thread Thierry Carrez
I acknowledge this is an issue but it's a difficult decision. Putting bcast
before host by default slows down SMB host resolution for everyone, in order
to make it usable for those using broken ad-crippled DNS...
On the other hand, this is generating a constant flow of Nautilus/samba bugs.

[Bug 394350] [NEW] RLimitCPU has no effect in Apache

2009-07-01 Thread Neil Van Dyke
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

Binary package hint: apache2

The Apache RLimitCPU directive has no effect on in the Ubuntu
packaging of Apache 2.2.8. We have reproduced this problem on multiple
Ubuntu 8.04 systems, including a freshly-installed one.

We have verified that it *does* work on the same machine when using an
unmodified upstream source build of 2.2.8. We have also verified that
it works on Debian stable (using Debian packaging of Apache 2.2.9).

This arguably constitutes a DoS security vulnerabilitys, since the
Ubuntu packaging of Apache is not preventing a runaway process from
taking down the server as a correctly operating Apache (including
upstream) does.

The cause appears to be in either Ubuntu-specific (or Debian-specific)
patches to 2.2.8 in the Ubuntu/Debian-specific configuration setup in
Ubuntu packaging of 2.2.8.

If the problem can be fixed in the Ubuntu packaging of Apache as an
update to 8.04, so that we could use it on our server, that would be
great. Otherwise, we will have to move to a build of upstream Apache or
move away from Ubuntu.

Thank you.

[Bug 389909] Re: Nautilus can't browse local network if ISP uses DNS redirection

2009-07-01 Thread Martin G Miller
Is there any way to detect that DNS redirection is taking place other
than the long delay in getting the gui to display? Or, you could just
use a time-out that after a certain amount of time or a failure to
detect the network correctly a suggestion pops up that DNS redirection
is/may be taking place and offers to make the change to smb.conf. This
way, you can leave the default as it is, but can make the change on the
fly for those who are affected by it.

Your comment that changing the order slows down SMB host resolution
confuses me a bit, because, once I make the change to smb.conf, the
network browse gui pops up in under 1-2 seconds and browsing the network
seems no more than about 1 second per click. It feels about the same as
browsing the local network in Windows XP SP2 on the same network.

Admittedly, my networks are very small, so perhaps on a network with
dozens or hundreds of machines, the resolve order makes a difference,
but in my case with only 6 machines or so, it seems to have no negative
affects at all.

The other question is what are Windows XP and KDE network browsing doing
differently than Gnome? Windows XP and KDE are not affected by this
issue at all. Until I figured out the order change, I used smb4k
without any problems.

Re: [Bug 381269] [NEW] NUT fails to shutdown UPS

2009-07-01 Thread Martin Maney
the solution Martin has proposed can only be considered as a temporary local
fix (ie on your boxes but not for an upload) for affected users, for the
reason I mentioned in the Debian bug linked.

Not disagreeing, but frankly I can't see any very great value in the
additional check of the flag file. Just curious: has there in fact
been trouble with that? It seems to me that a bug like the current one
is already more cost than the dubious benefit of double checking, but of
course I've been bitten by one and not the other! :-/

Exactly. This is why in corporate networks a WINS server is used in
order to avoid too much network traffic.

[Bug 389909] Re: Nautilus can't browse local network if ISP uses DNS redirection

2009-07-01 Thread Jonathan Marsden
Given a way to detect broken DNS at package install time, it might be
reasonable to set name resolve order to broadcast first
at that point, if such brokenness is detected. A comment line indicating that
resolve order was set like this because DNS brokenness was detected at
date/time could also be added to smb.conf.

While this wouldn't solve the issue for people who install SAMBA and
then later deliberately break their own DNS, it should catch a
reasonable fraction of cases.

Opinion: It's probably not politically feasible, but if Ubuntu checked
for DNS brokenness at boot, and displayed a scary warning to contact
your ISP and ask them to disable DNS redirection, over time we might see
fewer ISPs do it, because they'd see increased costs in terms of the
number of support calls? ;)

[Bug 394570] [NEW] Backspace via SSH only deletes last byte of characters

2009-07-01 Thread AZaharia
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openssh-client

This is not a terminal-related problem: regardless of the terminal used
and the way the backspace key is supposed to behave (ASCII DEL, escape
sequence, Control+H), what happens is that via SSH the backspace key
only deletes the last byte of a character, not the whole character
itself.

You can notice this when you use UTF-8 characters that are encoded on
more than 1 byte. Some diacritics from the Latin alphabet are encoded on
2 bytes, whereas some Japanese characters are encoded on 3.

As an example, assume the following scenario: the letter ș is encoded
as c8 99 and endline is encoded as 0a:

u...@host:~$ cat ș.txt
ș
^d
u...@host:~$ hexdump -C ș.txt
  c8 99 0a |...|
0003

Now, assume you write testș[hit backspace]test[endline]. On the
physical host (i.e. without being SSH-ed into it), the hexdump of that
file will be:

u...@host:~$ cat test.txt
testș[backspace]test
^d
u...@host:~$ hexdump -C test.txt
  74 65 73 74 74 65 73 74 0a |testtest.|
0009

whereas the *same* thing via SSH would lead you to having the following
hexdump:

u...@host:~$ ssh u...@localhost
u...@localhost's password:
u...@host:~$ cat test.txt
testș[backspace]test
^d
u...@host:~$ hexdump -C test.txt
  74 65 73 74 c8 74 65 73 74 0a|test.test.|
000a

So notice how backspace only deleted via SSH the last byte of ș i.e.
only the 99 out of c8 99; compare the expected hexdump:

74 65 73 74 74 65 73 74 0a

with the actual hexdump:

74 65 73 74 c8 74 65 73 74 0a

locale is set to en_US.UTF-8; changing it to ro_RO.UTF-8 (both on the
host and via SSH) yields the same results.

Finally, last details:

Ubuntu 9.04
Kernel 2.6.28-13-generic
openssh-client: Installed: 1:5.1p1-5ubuntu1
openssh-server: Installed: 1:5.1p1-5ubuntu1
