You can already set this via the MAX_CORES value in eucalyptus.conf on

[Bug 456808] Re: Karmic-Networking (SAMBA) just does not work, even with detailed attention.

2009-10-22 Thread Thierry Carrez
#4 Re:Winbind, because somewhere it was recommended to have installed.
winbind is a component of the Samba suite of programs that solves the unified
logon problem. Winbind uses a UNIX implementation of Microsoft RPC calls,
Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAMs), and the name service switch (NSS) to
allow Windows NT domain users to appear and operate as UNIX users on a UNIX
machine

I fail to see how winbind can help in your scenario (since you don't use
a Windows domain) and I can certainly imagine how it can lead you to
failure if badly configured.

Please try with just samba installed, and not winbind.

#5 What does smb://IP of a remote PC/sharename return ?

#6 2. it's /var/log/samba/log.nmbd. And we need those of the remote PC,
the one that you're trying to connect to and fail.

I'm still trying to figure out what exact bug you're reporting here,
apart from general failure to configure SMB networking on your machines,
and how much simpler this should be (which is not a bug). I suppose it's
the can't access remote PC via smb:// in Nautilus, while I can access
it just fine locally. If I got it right, could you:

1/ try accessing the share using smbclient rather than Nautilus ? Try smbclient
//remote_system/share_name
2/ try to define guest ok = yes in your share to rule out account name issues.

PROMPT ec2-describe-availability-zones

[Bug 456224] Re: Installing bind9 with forwarders causes loss of hostname resolution.

2009-10-22 Thread cwsupport
Resolv.conf did have two lines with nameserver entries for the two
entries that were moved to Bind9.

This configuration WORKS under Hardy Heron and AFAIK intrepid.

The problem is resolved via an entry in resolv.conf of 'nameserver
127.0.0.1'.

Before this is discounted though how come DIG still resolves (i.e.
automatically uses 127.0.0.1) yet PING (and other programs) don't? This
is a CHANGE from operation under Hardy Heron - The reason for me raising
the issue is to ascertain that this is now correct behaviour - given
that ping and dig both work with an identical setup under hardy heron.

Is it that the libc name resolution stack has changed?

[Bug 420960] Re: Karmic Alpha 4 playback stops when playing media stored on samba share

I've just copied a large group of files (8.9GB worth) from the server to

that with autoskip enabled, left one file incomplete and the next not
copied.

What in the Kubuntu samba client software stack or networking stack
would cause this? (And how could I get a log that could provide a clue
for debugging purposes?)

What I did:

pointed Dolphin to smb://10.1.1.2/(samba share)/(subdirectory)

selected all files in the directory

Right-click | Copy

alt-tab to instance of Dolphin pointing at home folder/Video projects

Right-Click | Paste

Expected result: all files copied successfully

Actual result: two files not copied due o glitch in the middle of copy
process

[Bug 456238] Re: empty message-id, no date in Evolution MUA

2009-10-22 Thread wild_oscar
The explanation for this issue is in Postfix 2.6.5's release notes
(http://www.sfr-
fresh.com/unix/misc/postfix-2.6.5.tar.gz:a/postfix-2.6.5/RELEASE_NOTES):

240 [Incompat 20090330] Postfix now adds (Resent-) From:, Date:,
241 Message-ID: or To: headers only when clients match
  242 $local_header_rewrite_clients. Specify always_add_missing_headers
243 = yes for backwards compatibility. Adding such headers can break
244 DKIM signatures that cover headers that are not present.
245 compatibility with existing logfile processing software, Postfix
246 will log ``message-id='' for messages without Message-Id header.

It is therefore intentional and the bug can be closed.

Re: [Bug 457864] Re: Cloud Web interface should allow overcommit on CPU

2009-10-22 Thread Etienne Goyer
Neil Soman wrote:
You can already set this via the MAX_CORES value in eucalyptus.conf on
individual nodes. It is unclear whether using a blanket value across all
nodes via the front end config is a good idea. We provide a finer level
control at the individual node level and I don't think this will be
 changing for Karmic.

The problem is that you have to go and manually change MAX_CORES on all
the node controllers. Moreover, you will need to restart the NC
service, which could bring downtime. Being able to overcommit resource
at the cluster level would greatly simplify the process.

Apparently, this is important to corporate users, as I have had that
question before. I think the reasoning is sound; there is no reason to
arbitrarily limit the number of instances.

I am certainly not expecting such a thing to be implemented for karmic,
but if it could get somewhere on Eucalyptus, that would be great.

[Bug 457716] Re: apparmor denies save and restore

2009-10-22 Thread Jamie Strandboge
This also affects the selinux svirt driver. According to upstream, the
svirt driver needs to be modified to 'relabel' the specified state file.
Until this is fixed upstream, we can temporarily work around this with
documentation and profiling.

[Bug 444352] Re: DB deadlock on reboot prevents UEC from working, temporarily

2009-10-22 Thread Thierry Carrez
Maybe that's clearer:

Proposed Title:
UEC might refuse to serve the first requests received after boot
Text:
On specific UEC systems we observed a database deadlock condition after boot
that prevents a UEC cloud to answer correctly to the first requests it
receives, usually triggering 503 Forbidden answers. After some tries the
deadlock condition is automatically cleared. To workaround this issue you can
restart eucalyptus after boot on the cluster controller by running sudo
restart eucalyptus (444352).

2009-10-22 Thread Dustin Kirkland
I think this is pretty critical, as this functionality has been working
for almost all of Karmic.

And it was featured rather prominently in Mark's Karmic announcement:
 *
https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel-announce/2009-February/000536.html

A savvy Koala knows that the best way to conserve energy is to go
to sleep, and these days even servers can suspend and resume, so imagine
if we could make it possible to build a cloud computing facility that
drops its energy use virtually to zero by napping in the midday heat,
and waking up when there's work to be done. No need to drink at the
energy fountain when there's nothing going on. If we get all of this
right, our Koala will help take the edge off the bear market.

[Bug 348633] Re: Fails to boot from CD after reboot: CDROM boot failure code: 0003

This is expected behavior.

You probably should be using -boot dc. This will cause the VM to boot

distributions eject the CD after installation (to prevent booting into

[Bug 458201] Re: kernel stacktrace on volume detach in kvm guest

2009-10-22 Thread Scott Moser
For the record, IRC snippit:

smoser i think i might have been missing some step to explicitly release
/dev/sdb from the guest (maybe 'eject /dev/sdb' or something)
kirkland smoser: the stack trace on detach?
kirkland smoser: i've seen that, clearly wrong, but I haven't noticed any
mal-effects

Subsequently, I did:
cc$ euca-attach-volume -i i-4AA8096D -d sdb vol-32F804B0
instance$ sudo mount /dev/sdb /mnt
instance$ # verifiy file is there
instance$ sudo umount /mnt
cc$ euca-detach-volume vol-32F804B0
instance$ grep sdb /proc/partitions || echo IT IS STILL THERE
# it wasn't still there.

So, this does indeed not seem to affect re-attaching the volume with the
same device name.

[Bug 458211] [NEW] eucalyptus.conf is confusing and underdocumented

2009-10-22 Thread Etienne Goyer
Public bug reported:

The configuration file /etc/eucalyptus/eucalyptus.conf, used by all
Eucalyptus services (-cloud, -cc, -nc, etc) is very confusing and
practically undocumented. The inline comments are helpful, but they do
not provide enough context for the administrator to decide which
configuration directive are relevant to his specific setup.

For example, let's say a system administrator is configuring a machine
running only the Walrus service, to be registered with a CLC running on
another machine. Is it relevant for him to define VNET_PRIVINTERFACE
directive and, if so, what value should he use? And so on for pretty
much all directives.

At the very least, a eucalyptus.conf man page explaining in which
context each directive are relevant would desirable. Better yet would
be to break eucalyptus.conf in service-specific configuration file that
could be documented separately, either inline or in a man page.

your statement: I'm still trying to figure out what exact bug you're

There are many, many many users of Ubuntu that have problems with
networking (Google it or just look at the messageboards.). it MUST be
as simple as Microsoft has configured it, for noobs and businesses
alike, or this will ALWAYS be a negative for Ubuntu.

[Bug 348633] Re: Fails to boot from CD after reboot: CDROM boot failure code: 0003

2009-10-22 Thread Scott Moser
I think this is really a simple matter of which type of cdrom is being emulated
by kvm. In my experience, there are at least two behaviors of CDroms that have
their tray ejected on boot.
a.) pull in the tray (eject -t) which would have a cd in it, and then would be
available for the bios boot selector. This is typical behavior of desktop
machines.
b.) do not pull in the tray , leave out, and thus theres no CD available to
boot. My thinkpad has this type of CD, the cdrom is not capable of eject -t.
Ie:
 | $ eject -t /dev/cdrom
 | eject: CD-ROM tray close command failed: Input/output error

KVM implements 'b'. It appears that the bug opener expects 'a'.

[Bug 458163] Re: [regression] euca_rootwrap fixes broke eucalyptus power management (powerwake)

2009-10-22 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Okay, actually, the Eucalyptus fix is purely wishlist.

We can make this work entirely from powerwake, by simply testing the
writability of the cache file. Absolutely trivial fix, to enable this
major feature. Please consider this for GA...

Re: [Bug 456224] Re: Installing bind9 with forwarders causes loss of hostname resolution.

2009-10-22 Thread Mathias Gug

On Thu, Oct 22, 2009 at 08:24:46AM -, cwsupport wrote:
Resolv.conf did have two lines with nameserver entries for the two
entries that were moved to Bind9.

I can't reproduce this. Using a standard karmic system, installing the
bind9 package does *not* delete any lines in /etc/resolv.conf. It
doesn't even use the entries in /etc/resolv.conf to setup forwarders (ie
the default bind9 configuration isn't a local cache).

Before this is discounted though how come DIG still resolves (i.e.
automatically uses 127.0.0.1) yet PING (and other programs) don't?

DIG bypasses the libc stack (and thus resolv.conf - the same way has
host does) while ping uses the libc stack (and thus uses the information
from resolv.conf).

Is the resolvconf package installed on the system?

[Bug 458163] Re: [regression] euca_rootwrap fixes affected eucalyptus power management (powerwake)

2009-10-22 Thread Dustin Kirkland
A bit more explanation...

Before euca_rootwrap was rewritten:
 * powerwake ran as root:root
 * thus, powerwake had write access to /var/cache/powerwake/ethers
 * and powerwake worked just fine

After euca_rootwrap was rewritten:
 * powerwake was whitelisted, but wasn't given root access
 * now, powerwake runs as eucalyptus:eucalyptus
 * which is fine to send the magic WoL packet
 * however, the cache file is not writable
 * and thus, powerwake now itself throws an exception

As stated above, we can fix this entirely in powerwake with a trivial
fix, testing W_OK on /var/cache/powerwake/ethers.

[Bug 458163] Re: [regression] euca_rootwrap fixes affected eucalyptus power management (powerwake)

2009-10-22 Thread Dustin Kirkland
If we have to document around this, it can be fixed with a configuration
change in /etc/eucalyptus/wrappers.conf.

Currently, there is an entry for:
powerwake /usr/bin/powerwake

However, it's not given root privilege.

To adjust this, change that line to:
powerwake /usr/bin/powerwake 0
