[Bug 456985] Re: account configuration not working

2009-10-24 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Steve,

Would you agree to adding the broken_shadow option to pam_unix in the
account mode?

The use case here is a laptop that normally authenticates with kerberos
and gets it's NSS from LDAP, including the shadow map, even though it's
not really used in this situation (due to the use of kerberos). This
all works fine when the laptop is connected to the network.

But take it away from the network where it depends on pam-ccreds to
cache the kerberos authentication tokens (works just fine) and nscd to
cache the passwd/group entries that were used while connected to the
network, there is no shadow entry available for nscd cached passwd
entries and thus, pam_unix's account mode breaks.

No, I would not. It's a configuration error to have a password record

ignore such configuration errors by default.

[Bug 454822] Re: package merges in main, required for the maven2 build

2009-10-24 Thread Matthias Klose
The tomcat6 patch is splitted here in two different chunks:

 - tomcat6-1.debdiff merges the maven POM changes into the Ubuntu package
 - tomcat6-2.debdiff adds some changes to provide compatibility links
so that the jars can be found and used as in the current version in karmic.

tomcat6-common and libtomcat6-java are not used by eucalyptus, the
changes in libservlet2.5-java are additions only (the debdiff of the
binary shows that the .jar files are replaced by hard links).

[Bug 459664] [NEW] Backuppc errors restoring when it encounters filenames starting ~$

2009-10-24 Thread Chris Myers
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: backuppc

Backuppc errors restoring when it encounters filenames starting ~$

Some background:

~$ files are temporary files, created by Microsoft Word in the
current directory whilst Word is editing the original file.

For example - opening filename.doc with word creates an additional
file ~$filename.doc

If Word crashes, it leaves this file behind. It's not usually a
problem, but it is playing havoc with BackupPC restore.

BackupPC backs up these files without a problem. I found that if I select a
directory for restoration that contains a ~$xxx file, the restore fails.

The only workarond I can think of for the moment Is to do a nightly
purge of the pesky ~$xxx files before backups take place.

Cheers,

Chris.

[Bug 315591] Re: LD_LIBRARY_PATH set in ~/.profile doesn't stick

2009-10-24 Thread Loïc Minier
So the setgid bit which causes this effect is actually on purpose; from
README.Debian:

Setgid ssh-agent and environment variables
--

As of version 1:3.5p1-1, ssh-agent is installed setgid to prevent ptrace()
attacks retrieving private key material. This has the side-effect of causing
glibc to remove certain environment variables which might have security
implications for set-id programs, including LD_PRELOAD, LD_LIBRARY_PATH, and
TMPDIR.

If you need to set any of these environment variables, you will need to do
so in the program exec()ed by ssh-agent. This may involve creating a small
wrapper script.

It's not a configuration error when the information being used is cached

information is normally available.

You are being way too rigid here and excluding perfectly valid use-cases
because they don't exactly fit the original design model. i.e. rules
for the sake of rules rather than because they actually make sense.

You know this sort of thing drives me nuts. Perfection is the enemy of
progress and success. I admit to being a perfectionist and yet I still
know that perfection is not always necessary and in many cases actually
stifles what would otherwise be considered success.

Perfection is responsible for throwing away many otherwise successful
products because it's simply unreasonable to try to make it absolutely
perfect -- which in most cases doesn't have any real world impact
anyway.

[Bug 456985] Re: account configuration not working

2009-10-24 Thread Brian J. Murrell
Steve,

You can close this. i have figured out how to make my LDAP passwd map
behave.

For anyone following along or who may find this in their travels, you
will want to remove the shadowAccount object class from any ldap entries
which represent users that should be authenticated by Kerberos -- or
should otherwise not have shadow map entries (and the corresponding x
in the password field of the passwd map) for whatever reason.

Once the shadowAccount object class is removed, the passwd entries will
have a * in the password field and there will be no shadow entry for
them returned by nss_ldap.

[Bug 460089] [NEW] network state is lost if the cluster controller (CC) is stopped

2009-10-24 Thread Daniel Nurmi
Public bug reported:

in the eucalyptus-cc upstart script, the line:

rm -f /var/lib/eucalyptus/CC/*

will always clear all CC state when the service is stopped. The
upstream init scripts use:

stop/start/restart

to control the service while maintaining CC state (stored in
/var/lib/eucalyptus/CC/), while:

cleanstop/cleanstart/cleanrestart

will remove the state. With upstart, an idea is to wrap the above line
in a conditional that will only be true if a variable is defined on the
cmdline (i.e. the default behavior would be to leave the state, and if
an admin really wanted to start from a clean state, or re-read the
config file, they would have to set the variable on the cmdline):

start eucalyptus-cc CLEAN=1
stop eucalyptus-cc CLEAN=1
restart eucalyptus-cc CLEAN=1

and in the file:

if ( test $CLEAN == 1 ); then
rm -f /var/lib/eucalyptus/CC/*
fi

[Bug 311316] Re: Wrong readings of sensors

2009-10-24 Thread Knut Karevoll
After tinkering with lm_sensors for the last few days I have found many
bug reports llike this. This is not a bug.

The sensor chips are wired difrently from mainbord to mainbord. Even the same
models might have smal changes. There are literaly thousands of different
configurations and no way to find what configuration is used by software.
Lm_sensors have included a configuration file /etc/sensors with some default
configurations witch almost works for most. But not totaly.

You have to boot into bios and take note of the sensor readings and
configure lm_sensors to read almost the same values. This might include
stress testing and physical changes to your computer to identify the
right sensors and values.

[Bug 460183] Re: Postfix package errors during Ubuntu 9.10 upgrade

2009-10-24 Thread Scott Kitterman
After modifying main.cf, be sure to run '/etc/init.d/postfix reload'.
auto mode.
Running newaliases
newaliases: warning: valid_hostname: numeric hostname: 04
newaliases: fatal: file /etc/postfix/main.cf: parameter mydomain: bad parameter
value: 04

Not a Postfix bug. 04 is not a valid hostname. Try sudo dpkg-
reconfigure postfix and select a valid hostname (a fully qualified
domain name like mail.example.com).
