[Bug 416264] Re: ssh client pauses during GSS negotiation due to delay on reverse lookup in avahi

2009-11-11 Thread marco.pallotta
So it couldn't be a bug but an expected behavior. I don't know why GSSAPI auth
needs reverse lookup but one could argue that you have to set right direct and
reverse dns config in order to use SSH. If you haven't it (as in my situation)
the problem could be related to you (and me :-))
Obviously you can disable GSSAPI auth (if you have access to SSH server) and,
personally, I think it shouldn't enabled by default (even if many distro, as
RH, do it).
The suggest could be: enable it, by default, in a server distro (Ubuntu Server)
and disable it, by default, in the desktop release.

The DNS server is returning 'NXDomain' correctly. What is taking the
time is the Multicast AVAHI lookups.

You get the same delay if you ssh to an IP address.

You've explicitly told kvm to only boot from CD (-boot d). If you want
it to boot from CD, if available, and fall back to booting from the hard
drive, you should put -boot dc.

The workaroud you've suggested would largely satisfy my needs for
Ubuntu testing, but I don't understand why it shouldn't just work
 intuitively as described above.

It's just like setting your BIOS up to only try to boot from CD, and
never from your hard drive.

[Bug 472785] Re: can't register SC

2009-11-11 Thread Thierry Carrez
Just to clarify:
- You have a full cloud controller + cluster controller + storage controller +
walrus on .1
- You want to move the SC/walrus part to .2
- Eucalyptus can't seem to deregister the SC from .1

I wouldn't be surprised if there were issues when trying to change an
existing topology.

About recommended topologies, see
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEC/Topologies
Most of them put CC and SC on the same machine, with CLC and Walrus on other
machine(s).
Hope this helps.

2009-11-11 Thread Thierry Carrez
This is a race between resolvconf and bind9 installs.
sudo apt-get install bind9 resolvconf results in:
bind9 unpack
resolvconf unpack
bind9 configure fails to start with resolvconf: Error: /etc/resolv.conf must
be a symlink

bind9 starts up while the link isn't set up yet (will be done in
resolvconf configure)

Doing the install in two separate runs works:
sudo apt-get install resolvconf
sudo apt-get install bind9

6) Installed Samba package
7) Before finalisation of installation it asked me whether to maintain present

[Bug 479493] Re: NTP services installation crashes

2009-11-11 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Thanks for your report. I think you were right, this is a problem in ntp
and not in the gnome-system-tools. But luckily, I believe I've already
seen this problem, which has its root cause in yet another package (gdm-
guest-session).

The interesting part of the log is:
 Setting up ntp (1:4.2.4p6+dfsg-1ubuntu5) ...
useradd: cannot lock /etc/passwd; try again later.
 adduser: `/usr/sbin/useradd -d /home/ntp -g ntp -s /bin/false -u 117 ntp'
 returned error code 1. Exiting.

One workaround is to remove /etc/passwd.lock, and then to run 'sudo dpkg
--configure -a'. I think you're suffering from bug 432964. Can you
confirm the workaround is the right one?

[Bug 480125] Re: karmic cloud install fails at autodiscovery: wants both worlds (eucalyptus/root users)

2009-11-11 Thread Nick Moffitt
To clarify, I never managed to get the --no-rsync versions working.

Ultimately I managed to hack around this by symlinking the eucalyptus
user's id_rsa into root's .ssh/ dir and re-running sudo euca_conf
--discover-nodes.

** Description changed:

I have just installed two systems using karmic over PXEboot. Both were
  given the anna/choose_modules=eucalyptus-udeb boot option.

The Node Controller box was given the preseed config line:

- d-i eucalyptus/install-mode string Node
+  d-i eucalyptus/install-mode string Node

The Cluster Controller box was given:

- d-i eucalyptus/install-mode string Cluster
+  d-i eucalyptus/install-mode string Cluster

As well as appropriate settings for eucalyptus/cluster-name,
  eucalyptus/publicips, and eucalyptus/private-interface.

After boot, I followed the instructions from
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEC/NodeInstallation to use ssh-copy-
id to get the eucalyptus pubkey from the CC to the NC. I then tried the
  instructions from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEC/CDInstall to
  autodiscover nodes with:

- sudo euca_conf --no-rsync --discover-nodes
+  sudo euca_conf --no-rsync --discover-nodes

My NC was found, and I accepted the prompt to proceed to add it. The
scp failed, because root does not have the eucalyptus user's key. I
  then tried:

- sudo -u eucalyptus euca_conf --no-rsync --discover-nodes
+  sudo -u eucalyptus euca_conf --discover-nodes

And this succeeded in copying keys around, but failed when it tried to
edit /etc/eucalyptus/eucalyptus.conf because that is owned by root.

This seems to be a fairly grave problem in either the instructions or
the euca_conf program. At the moment, though, I'd appreciate a helpful
workaround. How am I to get my NC added?

[Bug 348633] Re: Fails to boot from CD after reboot: CDROM boot failure code: 0003

2009-11-11 Thread Anthony Liguori
1. kvm-img create hda.img 4G
2. kvm -hda hda.img -cdrom jaunty-desktop-i386.iso -m 512
3. Install Ubuntu onto hda
4. Reboot, following the prompts (press enter to eject the CD)
5. System boots into installed OS.

It's the use of '-boot d' that is creating problems for you. By
default, the order= parameter of boot is set to 'cad' which means that
it will first boot from the first hard disk, then boot from floppy, then
boot from CD-ROM. This seems to be the behavior you're asking for.

Additionally, you mentioned a user choosing a different device from the
menu. That is possible by adding '-boot menu=on'. This will cause a
prompt to the user to hit F12 to change the default boot order. We set
'menu=off' by default because it introduces a small delay during boot up
which is considered undesirable by many users.

[Bug 458904] Re: When installing a node, euca_find_cluster fails to locate the cluster controller if instances are running

2009-11-11 Thread Thierry Carrez
This is now working, *but* upgrading to the latest package is not enough
to fix it on a running system. You need to restart avahi-daemon (to make
it pick up the new avahi-daemon.conf) before you restart eucalyptus (and
the publication takes place). Rebooting would also work, as it would
restart both.

upgrade to 7.2 (which restarts eucalyptus): test = FAIL
  then restart avahi-daemon : test = FAIL
then restart eucalyptus : test = PASS

upgrade to 7.2, reboot: test = PASS

If that's not acceptable, I'd suggest postinst should pick up that
upgrade path and restart avahi before the eucalyptus publication jobs
are restarted.

Re: [Bug 459573] Re: variable expansion uses outdated data

2009-11-11 Thread Kern Sibbald

Fair enough, obviously I have misunderstood the use case for variable
 expansion. My apologies.

No need to appologize. Bacula is very complicated, and it is not always
obvious what features to use to do what you want (even for me sometimes).
Unfortunately, for lots of reasons variable expansion never really worked
out in Bacula. Some day, it will be removed once I find something better
(probably plugins).

Status in Bacula the Network Backup Solution: New
Status in “bacula” package in Ubuntu: Invalid

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: bacula

I use $Client-$Year-$Month-$Day as my LabelFormat. Recently I tried to
backup a server called ralph (this was a scheduled job). The Volume was
created with the correct name but the job failed as the FileDaemon was not
 running, as below:

 24-Oct 08:17 floyd-dir JobId 65: Created new Volume ralph-fd-2009-10-24
 in catalog.
 24-Oct 08:17 floyd-dir JobId 65: Using Device FileStorage

 Client: ralph-fd on 192.168.1.254:9102. ERR=Connection refused

The job eventually terminated itself. Subsequently I tried to run a job
manually to backup a different server (benson) and got the following
 output:

24-Oct 13:43 floyd-dir JobId 66: No prior Full backup Job record found.
24-Oct 13:43 floyd-dir JobId 66: No prior or suitable Full backup found in
 catalog. Doing FULL backup.
 24-Oct 13:43 floyd-dir JobId 66: Start Backup JobId 66,
 Job=benson.2009-10-24_13.43.03
 24-Oct 13:43 floyd-dir JobId 66: Using Device FileStorage
 24-Oct 13:43 floyd-sd JobId 66: Labeled new Volume ralph-fd-2009-10-24
 on device FileStorage (/bacula-volumes).
24-Oct 13:43 floyd-sd JobId 66: Wrote label to prelabeled Volume
 ralph-fd-2009-10-24 on device FileStorage (/bacula-volumes)
24-Oct 13:43 floyd-dir JobId 66: Volume used once. Marking Volume
 ralph-fd-2009-10-24 as Used.

Note that the Volume name is again ralph-fd-2009-10-24. It should have
been benson-fd-2009-10-24. It looks like the variable expansion has
retained the client name ralph-fd from the failed job. Either that or
bacula is not trying to create a new volume at all, but instead reusing
the volume created previously but not labelled or written to.

Right. However the eucalyptus update should be applied at the same time
as the avahi-daemon update. In such a scenario the daemon will be
restarted by the avahi-daemon ugprade and the new configuration file
should be picked up. I'll test this use case and report back.

[Bug 458904] Re: When installing a node, euca_find_cluster fails to locate the cluster controller if instances are running

2009-11-11 Thread Mathias Gug
Ok - that doesn't work either: conffiles are installed during the
configuration step (before postinst is called) rather than then the
unpack phase. As such eucalyptus specific avahi configuration file is
not available when avahi-daemon is restarted by avahi-daemon postinstall
script.

avahi-daemon needs to be explicitly restarted by eucalyptus-postinst
script.

2009-11-11 Thread falstaff
Hi,

My setup is a typical home setup, no domain server or something like
that, local user accounts. I have a D-Link DIR-855 Router at
192.168.220.1 which also acts as DHCP and DNS-Server (DNS-forwarding or
something like that). That router has also the ability to share an
attached USB-Harddisk (SMB?), altough, I have no harddisk attached and
dont use this feature. But I couldn't find a disable option...

I started strace on net usershare info:
$ time strace net usershare list 2 strace.txt

real1m24.027s
user0m0.020s
sys 0m0.040s

I attached the output. He waits for a longer period of time at each
poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}], 1, 5000-line.

When im offline (not connected via Ethernet/WLAN), the command is
allways very fast (and therefor nautilus doesnt hang...)

[Bug 480849] [NEW] Samba daemon crashes when transfering large files to share in encrypted home dir

2009-11-11 Thread Christoph E
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

1) 9.10 (Karmic)

2) Samba 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5

3) I have set up an encrypted home directory which is automatically
decrypted when logging in to the system. I have then set up a shared
directory within my home dir. I expect to write to and read from this
share from external clients when I am logged in at the server.

4) What actually happens is weird and not understood by me. Writing and reading
most of the files works fine. Then I chose a file with a size of 9GB to write
to the share. At first nothing happens and I can see that the hard disking is
working at the server and that the CPU load of smbd rises very fast above 50%.
After a few seconds the hdd stops working and the cpu load reaches 100%. The
process cant be even killed in the usual way. The client (here a Windows 7
machine) gets an error message, which says that I dont have permissionen to
write. (But other much smaller files in the same dir worked fine). But even
with small files, the CPU load became extremely high (80%) when copying files
from the client to the share.
Another problem happend when reading from the encrypted shared: It works most
of the time, but in some case the client receives an error message that files
could not be read.

Having an identical share on an unencrypted directory works fine in
every case and the cpu load is just as usual below 20%.

I have to remark, that the cpu load also gets very high when copying or
moving files between encrypted and unencrypted directories (no samba
involved).

And last but not least, I had the same problem on the same machine with
a previous RC install of Karmic a couple of weeks ago with a slightly
different configuration of my partitions.

I am not sure what kind of other documentation is actually required to
track this problem. My smb.conf is the default config with the two
entries for the shares (see attachment). Encrypted share Daten does
not work properly where as unencrypted share Video works fine.

[Bug 392759] Re: apache2 DoS attack using slowloris

2009-11-11 Thread Oliver
The connlimit module in iptables is an excellent defence against Apache
Denial of Service attacks. However, since upgrading to Karmic, iptables
is no longer blocking simultaneous connections when requested for me.

I had previously been using:
iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --syn --dport 80 -m connlimit --connlimit-above 10 -j
REJECT

However, worryingly, it no longer works for me. I can establish 20
simultaneous connections with the above firewall rule in place. I
believe this should be fixed with some urgency, as my webserver has
already been taken offline once by an attack (I stopped the attack by
firewalling the attacker's IP address manually).

I've filed a bug report, please check your iptables connlimit and report back
either way:

[Bug 480885] [NEW] Eucalyptus avahi publication jobs failed to restart if avahi-daemon is restarted

2009-11-11 Thread Mathias Gug
Public bug reported:

If avahi-daemon is restarted (for example during an avahi-daemon package
update) eucalyptus avahi publication jobs aren't restarted.

==
Karmic SRU

Impact:
If avahi publication jobs are not running, the cluster controller cannot be
located by the installer when additional node controllers are deployed.

How the bus has been addressed:
A respawn statement has been added to the upstart jobs.

TEST CASE:
1. Install eucalytpus-cc.
2. Check that two avahi-publish processes are running and note their pids:

$ ps -ef | grep avahi-publish
root 8287 1 0 13:04 ?00:00:00 avahi-publish -a
t-euca-sru-up.local 172.19.42.214
root 8292 1 0 13:04 ?00:00:00 avahi-publish -s Eucalyptus
cluster controller _eucalyptus._tcp 8774 txtvers=1 protovers=1.5.0 type=cluster
mathiaz 8341 964 0 14:39 pts/000:00:00 grep avahi-publish

3. Restart avahi-daemon (to simulate an update):

$ sudo restart avahi-daemon

4. Before the update, avahi-publish processes are no longer there. After
the upgrade, new avahi-publish processes have been started.

Potential of regression:
If avahi-daemon is manually stopped, upstart will try to restart the
publication jobs until it stops respawning them:
init: eucalyptus-cc-publication main process (8593) terminated with status 1
init: eucalyptus-cc-publication respawning too fast, stopped
Restarting avahi-daemon manually will not start the publication jobs which need
to be start manually as well. However this is not a regression from the current
version in Karmic.

[Bug 479493] Re: NTP services installation crashes

2009-11-11 Thread vachix
Thanks for you answer. I removed /etc/passwd.lock, /etc/shadow.lock files and
re-configured the ntp package.
The workaround works fine. It seems that the problem is similar as you observed
in the another package.

That's all nice and good, but with the conversion to Upstart in karmic,
this doesn't apply anymore. Anyone have a more karmic solution?

You have to enable the proposed updates but I would only update the samba
packages though through synaptic.
The package will get pushed into main soon though if you can be patient.

[Bug 442498] Re: karmic openldap cut-to-bone-and-beyond install, why ????

2009-11-11 Thread Alberto
I am in the same boat. I had a perfectly working ldap setup with two
replicating servers on Jaunty. I made the stupid decision to upgrade to
Karmic and lo and behold the configuration broke! After a couple of days
of trying to find a solution to this problem, i looked at the files in
/etc/ldap/slapd.d/ and looked at the files that had changed. I found
that the upgrade inserted some weird acl line to restrict access except
by root. This was preventing phpldapadmin from working.

I removed the acl manually from the two files that had it (sorry, i
don't remember the name of the files) and that restored the base search
functionality but now, I have strange replication problems. Things are
inconsistent. If I add a user to one server, it may or may not replicate
to the other server. Its madness... All of it was working 100% before.
What did you guys do in Karmic???

There is another bug in php 5 that prevents phplapadmin from working but
there is a fix for that particular bug.

I don't know if the replication problems are related to me manually
removing the darn acl line from the two files. I guess I should have
used the ldapmodify command. I am new at this ldap stuff with
cn=config. I liked it way better when we had slapd.conf file to quickly
change things.

If anyone has any insight on what might be wrong with syncrepl in
karmic, please let us know.
