I have not been able to reproduce this problem outside of the current production environment. And I can't realistically try to run php under valgrind since these are paying clients, and I can't risk their sites stability, etc. The other problem with reproducing this is that it takes some time to manifest. Its related to the form submissions on the site. On any given day there probably are 25-50 form submissions (some are very large multi-page forms too), and it takes maybe a week or so of this, for the error to start showing up. I don't really know a way to duplicate all that in a controlled environment. My guess is that if I restart apache every day, I'd never see the error at all. I do have a copy of the site in a staging environment. Michael, you're right, it's too unbelievable. I just noticed that after the most recent reboot, Samba also did not restart on the other Karmic machine (no VirtualBox). OTOH, Samba did successfully restart after the most recent reboot of the machine that runs VirtualBox. So my experience can be summarized as: *Sometimes* Samba fails to restart after rebooting Karmic, on both Karmic machines here. AFAIK VirtualBox is a red herring. This timeout for host lookups with 'host' is not such a problem, but also seems to affect firefox (fixable with a setting) and ssh logins to remote machines. Why does the host command look for a IPv6 address after It gets a good IPv4 response? Edit /etc/apache2/mods-available/php5.load and add: LoadModule php5_module /usr/lib/apache2/modules/libphp5.so Edit /etc/apache2/mods-available/php5.conf and put in: IfModule mod_php5.c AddType application/x-httpd-php .php AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps /IfModule During the make install step, use the -k flag. The -k flag means “keep going when some targets can't be made.” The output will still show the apxs error, but the installation should work.
