Thanks, Ray ! So it's fixed upstream in 3.4.3 / 3.3.9, which confirms
John's experience. we should push this to the next Samba SRU.

See /etc/update-motd.d/20-cpu-checker. The kvm bit would simply check
if it appears you have kvm extensions but they're disabled in BIOS.

Didn't kvm-ok used to be a general check for whether your system had VT
or not as well? Is that part of it gone or is that moving elsewhere?

I'm pretty sure I waited for the front-end to be ready, e.g. euca-
describe-availability-zones verbose returns a good output. I attach the
registration log from the front-end.

On the node the authorized_keys file contain a good key for the
frontend. As user eucalyptus on the front-end I can do a password less
login to node01 with ssh.

I can re-install the node and see if it gets any better.

Re: [Bug 505518] Re: package winbind 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2

2010-03-02 Thread Norman Crabbe
I am continually being asked by update manager to install an important
security update to Winbind. Always getting:-
E: /var/cache/apt/archives/winbind_2%3a3.4.0-3ubuntu5.4_i386.deb:
subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit status 2

I cannot install latest OpenOffice, suspect because of the same cause.

This seems to be the same error as 505518, how do I overcome this?

Regards.

[Bug 524893] Re: Can't boot initramfses

2010-03-02 Thread Loïc Minier
@Dustin: I'd love if you could assist on this bug; to reproduce, boot:
http://ports.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-ports/dists/lucid/main/installer-armel/current/images/versatile/netboot/

with qemu-system-arm -M versatilepb -cpu cortex-a8 -m 256  -kernel
vmlinuz -initrd initrd.gz

what you will probably see is:
[1.866499] Trying to unpack rootfs image as initramfs...
[1.875076] rootfs image is not initramfs (junk in compressed archive);
looks like an initrd
[...]
[5.347930] RAMDISK: Couldn't find valid RAM disk image starting at 0.

which means that the initramfs support doesn't work. (I also tried with
a gunzipped initrd to no luck)

We want initramfs support as on the other plaforms, but that doesn't
work for an unknown reason; apparently this work on real hardware, so
likely specific to the qemu ARM loader.

NB: the latest linux upload has CONFIG_CRAMFS=y on armel, so the RAMDISK is
likely to become mountable as an initrd; that's not what we want, but it's a
good workaround for now...

[Bug 530344] Re: dependency devscripts is too heavy

2010-03-02 Thread Loïc Minier
I noticed the same issue WRT the dependency, thanks for actually filing
a bug!

In terms of fixing it:
- ideally, but this is my personal opinion, this would be done in the
guest/chroot at image creation time, and we wouldn't have to compute this from
the host; just defer to when we have the packages lists
- if that's not possible, use urllib2 and parse packages.gz with python-apt;
see suite-diff for some sample code parsing packages.gz

Note that the latter will actually bypass GPG verification; it would be
nice to GPG verify the Packages.gz... even if currently rmadison is
completely untrustable.

upstream seem to thing that updating the termcap (the 'workaround' in my

so should we raise this against ubuntu/+source/vte ?

[Bug 530400] Re: starting second kvm guest created using ubuntu-vm-builder fails with 'could not remove profile'

2010-03-02 Thread Simon Huerlimann
Well, I think I've tracked it down:

The VM can't be started and virsh shows the above mentioned error when the
qcow2 disk source file is located in /etc (at least when in /etc/libvirt/qemu
or /etc/network). So the following snipplet in the XML file triggers the error:
disk type='file' device='disk'
  source file='/etc/libvirt/qemu/infra01/disk0.qcow2'/
  target dev='hda' bus='ide'/
/disk

While something like
   disk type='file' device='disk'
  source file='/srv/cyt.ch/kvm/infra01/disk0.qcow2'/
  target dev='hda' bus='ide'/
/disk
works like a charm.

Well, it's absolutely stupid to create disk files in /etc, I know. Was
triggered by simply running ubuntu-vm-builder from those directories
while not being fully awake...

Well, in the end I think it's a sysadmins decision where to put those
disk files. While /etc is really stupid, there might be some other
places silently forbidden by apparmor. I think while some more bugs
like this will be filed if there's no better error message... For this
reason, I'm leaving this bug open, even though it could be considered
invalid...

Well kern.log is quite quiet:
Mar  2 14:53:54 leo01 kernel: [84139.330434] type=1505

syslog is more verbose:

Re: [Bug 429443] Re: /usr/bin/kvm-ok should be disassociated from kvm

2010-03-02 Thread Dustin Kirkland
kvm-ok used to be just a grep for vmx|svm of /proc/cpuinfo.

Now, it performs a couple of additional checks. It will also check
dmesg for a message about kvm being disabled in your bios, and look
for /dev/kvm.

The check for the bios message has been exceedingly useful to users,
and we the maintainers trying to support users who's computer
manufacturers arbitrarily disable kvm in their bios by default. Much
of the documentation spread around the web simply says grep your
cpuinfo for vmx|svm, but most of it neglects to say, oh, by the way,
check your dmesg for a kvm disabled in bios message.

This particular bug is really about moving /usr/bin/kvm-ok out of the
qemu-kvm package and into some package the user will already have on
their system when they're trying to decide if they can use kvm or not.

The current mode is clearly suboptimal, which looks like:
 $ sudo apt-get install qemu-kvm
 $ kvm-ok || sudo apt-get purge qemu-kvm

That's clearly silly.

Whether a message ends up in MOTD, I care not. But I thought Kees'
change set a precedent for giving friendly hints about cpu features
which are disabled in BIOS.

[Bug 515706] Re: qemu-kvm-extras-static sysctl.d settings remain active when package is removed but not purged

2010-03-02 Thread Loïc Minier
To be clear, in postinst I have:
start procps

and in postrm, on purge, I have:
start procps

This means that the /etc/sysctl.d tree gets applied after install (that's
probably ok) and reapplied after purge which is a problem in two ways:
- settings are still applied while the package isn't purged (but only removed);
I think that's acceptable, even if not perfect
- settings which were overriden by qemu-kvm-extra-static's /etc/sysctl.d/
config will only be reset if another file in /etc/sysctl.d also sets them; this
is true for mmap minaddr for instance, but perhaps not for other settings such
as vm.vdso_enabled on i386.

Yup, you still have VT support is only vaguely actionable and does not

[Bug 530091] Re: [alpha3] NC fails to be detected.

2010-03-02 Thread Dustin Kirkland
I'm confirming this.

I have a new UEC setup this morning from the current archive.
CLC+WC+CC+SC, and 4xNC.

The CLC was definitely up and running and serving the preseed.conf
before the NCs were installed.

The NCs installed correctly, and they have the CLC's ssh key in
/var/lib/eucalyptus/.ssh/authorized_keys.

But none of them are registering automatically.

I think I've seen this quite a bit around Alpha3, and when I mentioned
it, we chalked it up to preseed/netboot/timing issues.

In any case, this is non ideal. And it looks like a regression to me,
as this was working very, very well in Portland.

[Bug 530513] Re: openssh-client in lucid cannot connect to openssh-server in karmic

2010-03-02 Thread Charlie Kravetz
I can not confirm this issue in Ubuntu development version, Lucid Lynx.
I am able to connect to my other system with Xubuntu 9.10, Karmic Koala.
The system I am connecting from:

apt-cache policy openssh-client
openssh-client:
  Installed: 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu1
  Candidate: 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu1 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com lucid/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

The system I am connecting to:

apt-cache policy openssh-server
openssh-server:
  Installed: 1:5.1p1-6ubuntu2
  Candidate: 1:5.1p1-6ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 1:5.1p1-6ubuntu2 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

However, I do use static IP addresses and have added both hostnames to
the /etc/hosts file.

[Bug 530832] [NEW] vsftpd 2.2.2-3ubuntu4 fails to upgrade because no ftp group

2010-03-02 Thread John Edwards
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: vsftpd

During an upgrade from Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 10.04 the vsftpd failed to upgrade
cleanly:

Installing new version of config file /etc/pam.d/vsftpd ...
vsftpd user (ftp) already exists, doing nothing.
chown: invalid group: `root:ftp'
dpkg: error processing vsftpd (--configure):
 subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

The ftp group does not exist on Ubuntu 8.04 and is not created during or
after the upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04. The primary group of the ftp user is
exactly the nobody group.

I think the problem is cause by the /var/lib/dpkg/info/vsftpd.postinst script
assuming that the ftp user has an ftp group:

db_get vsftpd/username
_USERNAME=${RET:-ftp}

And later in the same script:

mkdir -p ${_DIRECTORY}
chown root:${_USERNAME} ${_DIRECTORY} -R

I think the most obvious fix is to create a new _GROUP variable which
would default to an existing group and use this in the chown command.
I'm not sure if the nobody group is the best group for this.

Libvirt should use similar hack like in virt-manager (from previous
RedHat's bugzilla report):

we pass a shell script as the SSH command, and try
to detect these incompatibilities. It's definitely a hack, but we don't have a
lot of options:

[Bug 530091] Re: [alpha3] NC fails to be detected.

2010-03-02 Thread Dustin Kirkland
I believe I've tracked down where this problem was introduced:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-
dev/eucalyptus/ubuntu/revision/909

My nodes don't have [ -f /etc/eucalyptus/eucalyptus-nc.conf ], so the
publication job isn't starting.

This is because the debconf key/value for eucalyptus/cluster-name does not
exist on my NC.
  $ echo GET eucalyptus/cluster-name | sudo debconf-communicate

And thus the eucalyptus-nc.postinst isn't able to populate that file.

I'm working on a fix.

[Bug 527275] Re: package mysql-server-5.1 5.1.41-3ubuntu7 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script killed by signal (Interrupt)

2010-03-02 Thread Wouter Deconinck
I had the same problem. In my case, it seems that the cause was that
apparmor was blocking mysql. I had to run sudo aa-complain mysql before
I could finish the configuration. I do not remember ever enabling aa-
enforce for mysql (or for anything else, in fact).

Steps to reproduce:
  sudo aa-enforce mysql
  sudo apt-get install --reinstall mysql-server-5.1

Result: apt-get will stall at
  Preconfiguring packages ...
  (Reading database ... 339276 files and directories currently installed.)
  Preparing to replace mysql-server-5.1 5.1.41-3ubuntu7 (using
.../mysql-server-5.1_5.1.41-3ubuntu7_i386.deb) ...
while trying to execute 'stop mysql' in the prerm script.

Work-around:
  sudo aa-complain mysql
  sudo apt-get install --reinstall mysql-server-5.1
gives the expected result.

[Bug 530942] [NEW] euca_conf --discover-nodes --no-rsync is kind of silly

2010-03-02 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Public bug reported:

The Ubuntu documentation states in a number of places to use:

euca_conf --discover-nodes --no-rsync

The --no-rsync part is kind of silly.

We can actually use rsync just as well as scp, with two minor changes.
I have an easy fix for this, though I'd like to run it by upstream.

[Bug 530945] [NEW] Please backport keepalived 1.1.17-2 to Karmic from Lucid

2010-03-02 Thread Andres Rodriguez
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: keepalived

Please backport keepalived 1.1.17-2 to Karmic from Lucid. The reason
behind this backport is because keepalived 1.1.17-1, which is currently
in Karmic, does not have LVS support. This problem has been fixed in
keepalived 1.1.17-2 which we now have in Lucid.

Please see [1] for further information on the related bug:

[Bug 530949] [NEW] mount.cifs yields garbled directory listing where smbclient works

2010-03-02 Thread ScottPurcell
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

This mount command in Ubuntu does not work -- the directory listing is
indecipherable:

sc...@u904-209nvd1-95031:~$ sudo mount.cifs
//pc1n7i01d03.us.dell.com/DTTUATNAS2/training /tmp/mnttest/ --verbose -o
credentials=/etc/.cred.txt

mount.cifs kernel mount options:
unc=//pc1n7i01d03.us.dell.com\DTTUATNAS2,user=scott_purcell,ver=1,credentials=/etc/.cred.txt,prefixpath=training,ip=10.30.25.221,pass=

The same command in RHEL 5 works -- the files and directories are viewable:

[r...@rh5-3g4dkb1-slp ~]# mount.cifs
//pc1n7i01d03.us.dell.com/DTTUATNAS2/training /tmp/mnttest/ --verbose -o
credentials=/etc/.cred.txt

mount.cifs kernel mount options:
unc=//pc1n7i01d03.us.dell.com\DTTUATNAS2,ip=10.30.25.221,user=scott_purcell,ver=1,credentials=/etc/.cred.txt,prefixpath=training,pass=

smbclient in Ubuntu works fine -- the files and directories are browsable:

sc...@u904-209nvd1-95031:~$ sudo smbclient
//pc1n7i01d03.us.dell.com/DTTUATNAS2/ -W americas -U scott_purcell -D
training

Please let me know what other information I can provide.
