[Bug 156085] Re: Could not open /proc/bus/usb/devices

2010-04-04 Thread Kip Warner
I contacted the developer of USBView and this is the dialogue.

On Sat, Apr 03, 2010 at 09:19:43PM -0700, Kip Warner wrote:
 Hey Greg,

Thanks for your great application USBView. I'd like to use it and I am
running Ubuntu Karmic. The problem is it looks as though they dropped
support for /proc/bus/usb a while ago and your app needs to be changed
to use /dev/bus/usb instead, as I understand it:

 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/usbview/+bug/156085/comments/6

 Is this possible?

Please contact ubuntu about this, there is nothing I can do about it.

good luck,

greg k-h

[Bug 555115] [NEW] Can't use XFS as filesystem

2010-04-04 Thread EAB
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic

It's impossible to use XFS as filesystem.

Seems to be that EXT3 is hardcoded in:
/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/VMBuilder/plugins/cli/__init__.py
It's not possible to use XFS without changing this file, which is bad. (sed
's/ext3/xfs/g'
/usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/VMBuilder/plugins/cli/__init__.py)

Option: --rootsize=SIZE only accepts the size of the root filesystem
Option: --part=PATH only accepts mountpoints and size

[Bug 545656] Re: Have not been able to download any application

2010-04-04 Thread Paul Broadhead
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important
for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn
more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a
bug inlibvirt.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications
have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the
Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are
having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 551221] Re: consider a newer version of apache2 for lucid or backport some changes

2010-04-04 Thread Stefan Fritsch
I am not sure how wise it is to make a release that is supported for 5
years and does not contain the fix for CVE-2009-3555 (unless you mean to
add it later). Clients may change their behaviour and refuse to connect
to insecure servers at some time in the future.

The improved protection for vulnerable clients I mentiond in my first
post is already in 2.2.14-5, so just ignore that.

The postrm hook is not urgent but may be required for the update to the
next LTS release. Maybe it would be enough to add it later in a point
release.

Disclaimer: I don't know much about the Ubuntu release process.

[Bug 555361] [NEW] package samba-common 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-04-04 Thread GrahamR
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

I was performing a regular update and there was a message during updates
about smb.conf (I think). I clicked on keep existing version and then I
saw an error message. Here is my smb.conf.file:

[global]

## Browsing/Identification ###

# Change this to the workgroup/NT-domain name your Samba server will part of
   workgroup = MSHOME

# WINS Server - Tells the NMBD components of Samba to be a WINS Client
# Note: Samba can be either a WINS Server, or a WINS Client, but NOT both
; wins server = w.x.y.z

   dns proxy = no

# What naming service and in what order should we use to resolve host names
# to IP addresses
; name resolve order = lmhosts host wins bcast

#Lanman settings

lanman auth = Yes

 Networking

# This can be either the interface name or an IP address/netmask;
# interface names are normally preferred
; interfaces = 127.0.0.0/8 eth0

# Only bind to the named interfaces and/or networks; you must use the
# 'interfaces' option above to use this.
# It is recommended that you enable this feature if your Samba machine is
# not protected by a firewall or is a firewall itself. However, this
# option cannot handle dynamic or non-broadcast interfaces correctly.
; bind interfaces only = yes

 Debugging/Accounting

# This tells Samba to use a separate log file for each machine
# that connects
   log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m

# Cap the size of the individual log files (in KiB).
   max log size = 1000

# If you want Samba to only log through syslog then set the following
# parameter to 'yes'.
# syslog only = no

# We want Samba to log a minimum amount of information to syslog. Everything
# should go to /var/log/samba/log.{smbd,nmbd} instead. If you want to log
# through syslog you should set the following parameter to something higher.
   syslog = 0

# Do something sensible when Samba crashes: mail the admin a backtrace
   panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d

### Authentication ###

# security = user is always a good idea. This will require a Unix account
# in this server for every user accessing the server. See
# /usr/share/doc/samba-doc/htmldocs/Samba3-HOWTO/ServerType.html

# password database type you are using.
   passdb backend = tdbsam

   obey pam restrictions = yes

# This boolean parameter controls whether Samba attempts to sync the Unix
# password with the SMB password when the encrypted SMB password in the
# passdb is changed.
   unix password sync = yes

# For Unix password sync to work on a Debian GNU/Linux system, the following
# parameters must be set (thanks to Ian Kahan
ka...@informatik.tu-muenchen.de for
# sending the correct chat script for the passwd program in Debian Sarge).

   passwd chat = *Enter\snew\s*\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\s*\spassword:*

# This boolean controls whether PAM will be used for password changes
# when requested by an SMB client instead of the program listed in
# 'passwd program'. The default is 'no'.
   pam password change = yes

# This option controls how unsuccessful authentication attempts are mapped

## Domains ###

[Bug 423252] Re: NSS using LDAP on Karmic breaks 'su' and 'sudo'

2010-04-04 Thread Andreas Sandberg
I'm also experiencing this issue in the latest Lucid beta. When I
started investigating, I found that the system does not obey the setuid
bit on /bin/su if I'm running it as a user in the LDAP database.
However, running as a local user works as expected.

[Bug 462169] Re: nmbd dies on startup when network interfaces are not up yet

2010-04-04 Thread Jose Catre-Vandis
This has just cropped up on my PC too (Xubuntu 9.10), after installing
lirc, hangs on bootup just before the login screen (slim). (smb.conf is
vanilla). Wouldn't work in recovery mode, told me about the nmbd pid but
wouldn't let me do anything about it so CTRL-ALT-DEL was necessary.

Samba version 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.6

Found that by removing quiet and splash from the grub boot entry I could
boot up OK again, and nmbd and smbd showing in htop.

[Bug 555414] [NEW] package samba-common 2:3.4.0-3ubuntu5.6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 10

2010-04-04 Thread cwsnyder
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: samba

Re-installation of Ubuntu 9.10 from LXFDVD127 after a Debian 5 re-
installation accidentally overwrote Ubuntu / (/home was a separate
partition and was not overwritten). Three partitions, /, /home, and
swap, were the only partitions, sda1 (/ - ext4), sda2 (/home - ext3),
and sda6 (swap) are used for Ubuntu, Debian uses sda5 (/ - ext3), sda7
(/home - ext3) and sda6 (swap).

WinXP MC 2005 SP3 is installed on hda1, Win7 is installed on hda2.

Initial installation went without any hitches. When installing
upgrades, samba-common, grub-pc, and two other packages which I reported
as failing with error 10, marked today as affecting me, failed on
installation scripts.

[Bug 423252] Re: NSS using LDAP on Karmic breaks 'su' and 'sudo'

2010-04-04 Thread Philipp Kaluza
@Andreas: wow, that explains a lot, especially why installing nscd seems to
help.
Because if nscd is not running, the libnss_ldap function getpwnam() resolves to
will run in process, and someone in there (libgnutls ?) does the priviledge
drop.
Good catch, let's investigate further.

[Bug 444349] Re: package mysql-server failed to install/upgrade: skip-bdb option not supported

2010-04-04 Thread Brian Fennell
I found the fix mentioned here

removing skip-bdb from /etc/mysql/my.cnf solved the problem

For Ubuntu Karmic Koala upgrade from mysql 5.0 to mysql 5.1 (mysql-
server-5.1 5.1.37-1ubuntu5.1)

was what I needed. The apparmor stuff was a red herring (false clue)
for me.

This happened to me on a clean install of ubuntu server i386 with
packages dns, openssh, lamp, and samba. I was not able to login after
the install. Above fix worked for me chrooted from a live cd.

[Bug 554903] Re: apache2 with mod php5 does not execute index.php

2010-04-04 Thread Kenneth O'Brien
This patch makes apache2 serve php5 from public_html by default, and includes
instructions on how to disable it.
Previous behavior was was to disable by default and instruct to enable.

I think my way is more user friendly and is expected behavior.
