[Bug 565101] Re: walrus reports java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space
Yes, my opinion is it *will* use more heap memory when used under load and that needs to be configured, no matter what. Maybe there is a bug in eucalyptus code that makes it consume much more memory than it should, and it should never be necessary to raise it over the default heap size. Maybe there is a bug in eucalyptus that makes it leak references to objects over time, and any value we put in will always not be enough after some time. But having that knob and documenting its use cannot hurt. Especially if upstream considers the memory usage profile under load to be working as designed. -- walrus reports java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565101 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to eucalyptus in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 350936] Re: Should shut down domains on system shutdown
I'm not sure it can be done hacking upstart job. When libvirt was a sysvinit script in ubuntu 9.10, I used this [1] script adding it in stop function. In Lucid, if I add the same script to /etc/init /libvirt-bin.conf with the stanza: pre-stop exec shut-guests.sh 21 /var/log/shut-guests.log This works if I manually invoke a stop of libvirt-bin in a running system with: $ sudo stop libvirt-bin but **doesn't** work when issuing a reboot or halt. It seems there's an aggressive killing of all kvm processes **before** the pre-stop stanza is execute, and libvirt doesn't find any running guests when the shut- guests.sh is executed. it's not clear to me why and If this is an exptected behavior. If I can try to summarize the situation on this bug: - This is a regression from hardy. At a minimum, we need: 1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem, 2. the behavior you expected, and 3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible). Thanks! When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. This causes svn checkouts to fail depending on the client (e.g. on Ubunut 9.10 subversion with neon as dav lib is okay, serf is not). I created an svn repo /var/lib/svn/svn_memcache (see attachment). With some clients I cannot check it out, it fails for bad.root segfaulting apache. wget http://localhost/svn/svn_memcache/bad.root never succeeds. If I disable mem_cache it works. [Bug 565101] Re: walrus reports java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space
Thierry, some comments: *Heap size* 0. The machines on the test rig all have 10G of main memory; 1. when we started (no -Xmx) we would get OutOfMemory when the eucalyptus (CLC, Walrus, CC) resident memory -- as reported by 'top' was at about 800M; 2. When I tried -Xmx384m I observed OutOfMemory eariler, when the eucalyptus resident memory was at about 650M; 3. When I tried -Xmx1024m I observed OutOfMemory later, when the eucalyptus resident memory was at about 1300M. So, indeed, setting -Xmx has to be done carefully. But (3) above suggests the default heap allocation is *not* 1G (less of 1/4 of 10G or 1G). *Heap usage* I have been unable to observe reduction on memory usage (again, as reported by 'top', even on an idle cloud (i.e., a cloud that has no instances running). I would expect memory increase on usage -- class instantiations, etc --, followed by memory being released on system idling. All I have observed, so far, if that memory usage *only* increases. So either there is a code issue, or a Java issue. Day before yesterday I bounced *all* systems (so that I could guarantee we were starting from a clean slate), and submitted a 2,000 instance run. This run went from about 22:00 to 03:00 EDT; from about 01:30 onwards, no instance start succeeded, and OutOfMemory errors were being reported on the CLC, Walrus, and CC. The only conclusion I can make, right now, is that failed instance startup does not release memory. Remember we are observing 40~50% failure rates right now. Additionally, it seems that after an OutOfMemory no new instances can be run. In other words, an OutOfMemory *should* be considered a fatal error, requiring restart on the affected components. [Bug 562189] Re: AttributeError: 'Libvirt' object has no attribute 'vm'
Got the same on a Lucid. In my case the problem was that I already had a virtual host with the same name. Marcus, it looks like you've called vmbuilder with no --hostname. Don't know what is taken as hostname in this case, but probably the same on each invocation. So I see this as actually being two bugs: * vmbuilder not tellung you that you need --hostname * vmbuilder having a broken handling for checking the overwrite option. -- AttributeError: 'Libvirt' object has no attribute 'vm' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/562189 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to vm-builder in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Re: [Bug 520058] Re: package mysql-server 5.0.67-0ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 1
Hi Chuck, Hmm, I wasn't aware that you had requested any additional information. And when I go to the page provided in the original message I got https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/520058, I can't see anything either. Anyhow, the problem is that I basically bypassed this issue: I had to upgrade to 9.04 for other reasons, so this issue just went away for me. Which also means that I have no way of providing any more hard information. Trying to remember what I did about this back in February: I seem to recall that I guessed it had to do with the MySQL 'root' password somehow. I think that the upgrade error went away when I set the MySQL 'root' password to nothing, and then retried the upgrade. But I cannot guarantee that this is what actually happened, or just some idea I had. Sorry about this. Great work on Ubuntu otherwise! [Bug 566792] Re: UEC guests sometimes fail on consuming user data (metadata service isn't ready)
Well, as is often the case, user error added some confusion here. My system (and possibly kirkland and ttx) have a second dhcp server available on the network. That dhcp server was responding, and sometimes its response was being accepted rather than that of the CC. So, user error causes the '400' timeout, but the original debugging shown above showed empty data fields and a 200 response. As far as I can tell, that is still valid. Additionally, I belive I've got the correct dnsmasq/dd-wrt configuration options to ignore the UEC nodes: dhcp-host=d0:0d:*:*:*:*,ignore -- UEC guests sometimes fail on consuming user data (metadata service isn't ready) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/566792 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to eucalyptus in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 562189] Re: AttributeError: 'Libvirt' object has no attribute 'vm'
Yay! That did it! I added a --hostname and it just worked, so thanks very much. I don't think it's to do with whether a VM already exists as I have none in my folder and have been wiping /tmp files between each build (because it doesn't clean up after dying). In my case it should have nothing to clash with as I'd never had a successful build before! It's curious that the lack of a hostname should provoke an overwrite check when the --dest param deals with where the VM will be put. I'll report it as a documentation bug as well since the official docs on using vmbuilder don't even mention the hostname property: http://doc.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/serverguide/C/jeos-and-vmbuilder.html -- AttributeError: 'Libvirt' object has no attribute 'vm' https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/562189 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to vm-builder in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 568687] [NEW] Bulit vm image file retains random temp filename
Public bug reported: This is just a small feature request. While vmbuilder is running, it constructs the new VM in /tmp under a randomly generated folder name like 'tmpkJv90L'. When it's finished, it moves the completed image file to the location given by the --dest option, however, it retains the cryptic folder name as the filename for the image file. So for example if I specified --dest /home/me/webserver --hostname webserver and I end up with a folder containing run.sh and an image file called tmpkJv9OL.qcow2. It would be nicer and easier to manage if it called it webserver.qcow2, possibly appending numbers or letters to deal with filename clashes. ** Affects: vm-builder (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Bulit vm image file retains random temp filename https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/568687 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to vm-builder in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 562189] Re: AttributeError: 'Libvirt' object has no attribute 'vm'
I'm wary of making changes there as that page is for the older shell script version of vmbuilder and I don't know if the same things apply - I don't want to break things for Intrepid users just because Lucid is different. I also noticed that hostname is missing from the man page too. I'm also not clear on whether hostname really is mandatory or just a means of avoiding this bug, in which case this bug report is probably good enough to be found by those that need it. I'm guessing it's just a workaround for this bug as otherwise the docs would have mentioned it.
