[Bug 603001] [NEW] Guest with user net can't access external network when host has static IP
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: qemu-kvm I have a wireless network device, so bridging is completely out of the question. All I need is for external network access via user mode networking for the guest machine. I could connect to the host machine through 10.0.2.2, but couldn't connect to any machines external to the host. Reconfiguring the host device, which is wireless, to use DHCP immediately solved the problem. I'm pretty sure this started happening after I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04, but I can't be sure. I usually have DHCP enabled, but there was a period when I changed it to a static configuration. The other possible change is wireless devices. I was using a card that used the rt61pci driver but it has been particularly flaky. Instead I'm currently using a card that uses the ar9170usb driver. I'm not entirely certain whether this changes are related or whether this problem occured before or after, so this could all be taken with a grain of salt. qemu-kvm 0.12.3+noroms-0ubuntu9.2 libvirt-bin 0.7.5-5ubuntu27 libvirt0 0.7.5-5ubuntu2 Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Release:10.04 Linux 2.6.32-22-generic #36-Ubuntu SMP Thu Jun 3 19:31:57 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux ** Affects: qemu-kvm (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Guest with user net can't access external network when host has static IP https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/603001 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to qemu-kvm in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Here is another user who experienced the same issue: http://www.mail-archive.com/bacula- us...@lists.sourceforge.net/msg17051.html Like me this user found that passwords were not the problem, it was a misconfiguration at the networking level causing this error. [Bug 603285] Re: Please convert init script to upstart.
The job itself looks OK, although I have a few related questions: Shouldn't you be using dh_installinit to install the job and deal with migrating the old conffile? Simply dropping the new job in place and removing the call to dh_installinit is generally not the correct thing to do. The old init script has a few specialised warts that you don't seem to have preserved. Obviously a lot of it goes away with Upstart, but I think the inetd.conf check (even though it's clunky) is probably worth preserving. What about the ntp-wait gubbins? I can't think of an easy way to do start on started ntpd but only if it's installed in Upstart, so you may have to preserve that too for the moment. -- Please convert init script to upstart. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/603285 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to dovecot in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 603211] Re: Apache fails to start after reboot due to missing /var/run/apache2 direcotry when ssl is enabled
That's strange. /usr/sbin/apache2ctl should contain mkdir -p /var/run/apache2 and the init script should only call apache2ctl. Can you check that? And if apache2 failed to start after a boot, you should be able to restart it (using the init script or apache2ctl) without creating the directory. Maybe something is still cleaning /var/run while apache is already starting. -- Apache fails to start after reboot due to missing /var/run/apache2 direcotry when ssl is enabled https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/603211 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to apache2 in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 603363] [NEW] sshd never stops, prevents umount of /usr partition
Public bug reported: Under Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid, sshd is an upstart job controlled by /etc/init/ssh.conf This file provides for start and stop as follows: start on filesystem stop on runlevel S At shutdown or reboot, therefore, sshd is not stopped. Since sshd is in /usr/sbin/sshd and also accesses lib files in /usr/lib this means that /etc/rc0.d/S40umountfs cannot successfully umount /usr at shutdown when /usr is on its own partition. This definitely leads to umount reporting errors in the shutdown console messages. It may also lead to fsck running on reboot and problems with mountall... I can't say for certain yet as I am also having problems umounting /var, possibly due to a power failure, which is what led me to notice and investigate these messages. My guess is that when sshd was a System V init process, it was killed by the killall5 process in /etc/rc0.d/S20sendsigs. Under Lucid sshd has been made an upstart job and as such is exempt from the killall5 and so needs to be stopped explicitly. I admit I am by no means an expert on upstart or sshd, but the fix appears to me to be to modify /etc/init/ssh.conf to read stop on runlevel [!2345] ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: openssh-server 1:5.3p1-3ubuntu4 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-22.36-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-22-generic x86_64 Architecture: amd64 Date: Thu Jul 8 14:45:50 2010 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx - Release amd64 (20100427.1) ProcEnviron: LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: openssh ** Affects: openssh (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug lucid -- sshd never stops, prevents umount of /usr partition https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/603363 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to openssh in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

Jolly good. I'm blogging my progress on this thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1474942 which also describes the boot time messages that _may_ be related to this problem. [Bug 586546] Re: Byobu should be enabled by default for initial login to Ubuntu Server
Sorry, I'm a bit late to the party. How would this be achieved? If it's a matter of putting 'exec /usr/bin/byobu-launcher' into .bash_profile, I have at least one concern that is security related. Based on my experience w/ byobu-launcher, it will either create a new session or attach you to an existing one. This is where the problem lies, IMO. Based on this methodology, I think making byobu the default session manager will make Ubuntu servers more attractive targets for would-be attackers. For example: I log in, 'exec /usr/bin/byobu-launcher' creates a session, I su to root (why would I do this!?), and then I disconnect without explicitly exiting the session (e.g. I close a window, I experience power failure, etc). Anyone with access to my user account effectively has access to the root user as well because when they log in as me, byobu-launcher will attach them to the existing session which is currently sitting in a root shell. Even if they don't gain root access this way, byobu has definitely made it easier for them to snoop on the user by allowing them to share the same session. Do I have this correct or am I completely off base? I think it would be much better if /usr/bin/byobu-launcher re-authorized the login user by forcing them to re-authenticate the effective user when attaching to a session in which the effective user differs from the login user... if that makes sense. The other concern I have has to do w/ automation. I could imagine some organization has written a set of expect scripts (why!?) that among other things, log into systems, perform some tasks, and then log out f...@localhost:/home/foo# logout bash: logout: not login shell: use `exit' It's a relatively simple fix / workaround, but annoying none-the-less. -- Byobu should be enabled by default for initial login to Ubuntu Server https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/586546 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is a direct subscriber. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
[Bug 551130] Re: infinite loop in /etc/init/mysql.conf if mysqld is not running.
Targeting to 10.04.1 as mysql is a very popular server application. [Bug 586546] Re: Byobu should be enabled by default for initial login to Ubuntu Server
Re #14 (Dustin Kirkland): Thanks; ssh -t server bash is a workaround I had somehow failed to notice. I suggest that it should be documented somewhere very obvious if byobu becomes enabled by default though. Re #16 (Timothy R. Chavez): Anyone with access to my user account effectively has access to the root user as well because when they log in as me, byobu-launcher will attach them to the existing session which is currently sitting in a root shell. Good point in that byobu does effectively subvert the per-tty tickets of sudo: a byobu session will contain a persistent tty and thus sudo tickets will be shared amongst separate ssh connections. However I have never quite been convinced by sudo's security model in this regard (and this is equivalent to the scenario you present where a root shell is left open inside byobu): if someone gains access to a sysadmin's personal account, it is a simple matter for the attacker to surreptitiously install hooks such that the next time the sysadmin elevates to root (via sudo, or su, or anything else) the attacker elevates to root too. So in my opinion byobu bypasses a bogus security feature... maybe this makes things slightly easier for the attacker but not considerably so. The other concern I have has to do w/ automation. I could imagine some organization has written a set of expect scripts (why!?) I echo the (why!?) -- running expect on a shell is pretty bizaare and not something I would worry about. Shell scripts are a much saner approach and if invoked sensibly, e.g. ssh u...@host some-remote-script.sh or even like ssh u...@host some-local-script.sh byobu will not be invoked as bash will not be running interactively and so .bash_profile will not be sourced. (NB: these opinions are entirely mine and I certainly don't speak for the byobu maintainers or Ubuntu.) -- Byobu should be enabled by default for initial login to Ubuntu Server https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/586546 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is a direct subscriber. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
