Yes, to match upstream behavior we disabled security by default in Lucid (10.04), which basically avoids the problem altogether. [Bug 609092] Re: libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off
Could you precise what you mean by installed by default ? It certainly isn't installed on Ubuntu Desktop by default, and it's not installed in the default Server install either. It's installed in the Samba File Server task in the server installer. It also gets installed when you enable file sharing on the desktop. In both cases that sounds like a sane default behavior. The reason why it syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off is that libpam-smbpass is an alternative way of syncing Unix and Samba passwords: instead of syncing them at passwd change (which is what unix password sync does), libpam-smbpass (if present) syncs them when the user logs in. The way to disable it is to uninstall libpam-smbpass. ** Changed in: samba (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Wishlist ** Changed in: samba (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/609092 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 610768] [NEW] does not install into given block devices
Public bug reported: Hi, I'm trying (and still doing some tests) to install a KVM host into a given lvm partition. When trying this, ubuntu-vm-builder completely ignored the block device (given with --raw) and created a qcow2. I am currently repeating tests, and although an existing block device as a hard disk is given, ubuntu-vm-builder still creates a directory in /tmp to run debootstrap on. This indicates a broken abstraction and object-orientation of the Disk model used in the vm builder. Please fix. A better concept would be to have an abstract base class of a Disk and then different inheritances for several disk types, which behave differently, e.g. for a given raw device use kpartx to create partitions and install directly into the partitions, while using a tmp file and qemu-img to pack a qcow2 image. But the current structure of vm-builder is poor in behalf of it's disk treatment. Definitely needs improvement urgently. regards ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: ubuntu-vm-builder 0.12.3-0ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-24.38-generic 2.6.32.15+drm33.5 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-24-generic i686 NonfreeKernelModules: wl Architecture: i386 Date: Wed Jul 28 10:12:10 2010 EcryptfsInUse: Yes PackageArchitecture: all ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, no user) LANG=en_US.utf8 SHELL=/usr/bin/tcsh SourcePackage: vm-builder ** Affects: vm-builder (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 lucid -- does not install into given block devices https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/610768 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to vm-builder in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 609092] Re: libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off
Yes, it's installed when you install samba, I should have specified I meant by default when installing samba, sorry about that. I've looked around for a good while now trying to find out what hashes and encryption samba uses on it's files. I assumed it would have to use whatever hash the protocol uses, and it looks like I guessed right. Looking around for specifications on whats stored in the password database I find this in samba's documentation: user account information such as username, LM/NT password hashes, password change times, and account flags So that's LanMan and MD4 hash'es. LanMan is known for being easy to crack (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LM_hash ). My /etc/secrets are hashed to sha512 because it's too easy to break md5. I REALLY don't want my password automatically put in more databases by default in any package. -- libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/609092 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 609092] Re: libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off
libpam-smbpass is not installed by default when you install samba. It is installed when you choose the Samba file server task in tasksel (which groups samba with other useful packages, when you don't know what to pick), or when you setup folder sharing in the desktop (where it makes sense as a default behavior). Both cases are targeted to novice users where enabling libpam-smbpass makes sense as the default. I think that's a sane usability/discoverability/security trade-off. It's not installed when you install samba by itself, so it doesn't weaken security at all in most cases. You can safely remove it if you got it through the task or the folder sharing installer and prefer added security rather than that extra feature. ** Changed in: samba (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Opinion -- libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/609092 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 594544] Re: get prompt about modified config file on upgrade from hardy to lucid
I can't reproduce that, installing hardy dhcp3-client and upgrading to the version in lucid. The contents of the file shipped in hardy is longer than what you posted in your diff, and starts with: # Configuration file for /sbin/dhclient, which is included in Debian's # dhcp3-client package. So it looks like something modified it... Or maybe there is a deeper issue when the contents in hardy actually comes from a dapper - hardy upgrade. [Bug 374567] Re: tomcat6 with spring throws org/springframework/core/NestedExceptionUtils
Great! It would be even better if someone (you or I or an interested bystander) figured out just what permissions it really needs. I tried guessing, but that didn't work. Since (as is typical of classloader issues) it doesn't really tell you what went wrong, this probably needs either seriously systematic trial-and-error or setting up to attach a debugger. BTW, enabling security by default led to a bug in Apache Tiles getting fixed, so some good came of the experiment! [Bug 610987] [NEW] euca-describe-availability-zones verbose incorrect output
Public bug reported: This may be related to bug 610259. During my test runs on Eucalyptus V2, I start from an idling system, and then 'euca-run-instances -n value'. The value is calculated as a random between 1 and # of possible instances for this type / 2). The very first euca-run-instances -- on this test -- was set to '-n 12', for type=c1.medium. All 12 instances were accepted for start. An 'euca- describe-availability-zones verbose' *before* the euca-run-instances reported 40/40 as Free/Max for c1.medium. Hi, thanks for reporting this bug. Based on the attached logfiles it looks like apparmor refused mysql read access to a /sys file it expected to be able to read. However, you say suddenly the kernel seems like stuck and hang which would sound much more serious. Can you please confirm whether or not you are able to log into the machine? [Bug 570944] Re: passwd : gives Authentication token manipulation error
This is a tricky one. Dropping use_authtok does solve the problem of pam_unix not prompting for the password, but it also changes the behavior in the case that you have a password strength checking module stacked first, such as pam_cracklib. If pam_cracklib is configured, we don't want pam_winbind to prompt for a different password after we've gone to all the trouble of checking the strength of the first one entered! This problem affects other combinations of stacked modules as well (e.g., pam_krb5+pam_unix), and needs to be solved generally. Currently the best solution I can offer is for PAM modules to always prompt for passwords even when they don't need them, in order to ensure correct usage of use_authtok. Alternatively, we could fix modules that accept use_authtok to recognize the lack of a password token as valid and prompt for it after all, or we could introduce a new common module option with use_authtok_if_available semantics. In any event, we don't want to lose the current behavior that modules *must* use the existing password if provided rather than prompting separately, and any solution we implement needs to be done systemically; so please don't change the winbind pam profile without us first having a larger conversation about how to make this work. -- passwd : gives Authentication token manipulation error https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/570944 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to samba in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 611137] [NEW] cc_mounts may need to translate device names for xvda or virtio
Public bug reported: As shown in cloud-config syntax at [1], cloud-init allows the user to a name that will appear in the metadata service instead of a device name. For example, the user can specify: - [ ephemeral0, /mnt, auto, defaults, noexec ] If the metadata service contains something like: 'block-device-mapping': {'ami': 'sda1', 'ephemeral0': 'sda2', 'root': '/dev/sda1', 'swap': 'sda3'}, Then an entry in /etc/fstab will be added for 'sda2'. There are 2 possibilities that the string 'sda2' will be wrong. a.) on ec2, we're using a -virtual kernel, or some kernel without a patch to make xen block devices show up as 'sdX' rather than 'xvdX'. Currently our -ec2 kernels have xen block devices as sdX, but this may change. b.) on eucalyptus, with virtio as root device and/or ebs. In this case, the metadata service will still likely have 'sdX' but the kernel devices would be named vdX. In either case, some trickery will have to be done to decide to rename. Really, this is just a general problem with the metadata service provided by the hypervisor believing it knows certain things about the OS that is running in it. -- [1] http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~cloud-init-dev/cloud-init/trunk/annotate/head%3A/doc/examples/cloud-config.txt ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10 Package: eucalyptus-nc 2.0~bzr1211-0ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: User Name 2.6.32-305.9-ec2 2.6.32.11+drm33.2 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-305-ec2 i686 Architecture: i386 Date: Thu Jul 29 03:06:03 2010 Ec2AMI: ami-e930db80 Ec2AMIManifest: ubuntu-images-testing-us/ubuntu-maverick-daily-i386-server-20100727.manifest.xml Ec2AvailabilityZone: us-east-1b Ec2InstanceType: m1.small Ec2Kernel: aki-407d9529 Ec2Ramdisk: unavailable ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: eucalyptus ** Affects: cloud-init (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug ec2-images i386 maverick -- cc_mounts may need to translate device names for xvda or virtio https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/611137 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to eucalyptus in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 611144] [NEW] eucalyptus should support booting multiboot image
Public bug reported: Currently, for each instance launched by Eucalyptus, an admin provided kernel is booted. Eucalyptus generates a hunk of libvirt xml like the following: os typehvm/type kernelBASEPATH/kernel/kernel cmdlineroot=/dev/sda1 console=ttyS0/cmdline /os The result is that kvm is invoked with '-kernel path/kernel' and '-append root=/dev/sda1 console=ttyS0'. Historically, the admin provided kernel has been a linux kernel. This is in keeping with EC2's practice. Recently, amazon has exposed the ability to boot your own kernel by providing pv-grub as a kernel. The pv-grub boot loader functions very much like a normal grub 0.97 loader. It reads a menu.lst from /boot/grub/menu.lst and boots kernels from inside the guest. The largest end user benefit of this is that now the operating system booted can manage its own kernel. Previously, a kernel upgrade in an instance would result in the same kernel being used on reboot. Eucalyptus should provide a way to load a boot loader, rather than limiting the 'kernel' to a linux kernel. === The truth is, that Eucalyptus does not enforce that the kernel must be a linux kernel. And, a multiboot complient kernel can actually be booted in the mechanism described above, thanks to kvm '-kernel' being a multiboot complient boot loader. This sounds like a perfectly simple solution: Let the admin create multiboot compliant boot loader image (ie, grub2) that would chainload to the grub installed in the image. In fact, it actually *almost* works. The problem with the simple solution is that eucalyptus uses scsi as its root device, and seabios has no native support for scsi (bug 611142). Because this is *major* functionality, I'm seeking a work around to the issue above. -- [1] http://aws.typepad.com/aws/2010/07/use-your-own-kernel-with-amazon-ec2.html ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10 Package: eucalyptus-nc 2.0~bzr1211-0ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: User Name 2.6.32-305.9-ec2 2.6.32.11+drm33.2 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-305-ec2 i686 Architecture: i386 Date: Thu Jul 29 03:15:18 2010 Ec2AMI: ami-e930db80 Ec2AMIManifest: ubuntu-images-testing-us/ubuntu-maverick-daily-i386-server-20100727.manifest.xml Ec2AvailabilityZone: us-east-1b Ec2InstanceType: m1.small Ec2Kernel: aki-407d9529 Ec2Ramdisk: unavailable ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: eucalyptus ** Affects: eucalyptus Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: eucalyptus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Assignee: Scott Moser (smoser) Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug maverick uec-images -- eucalyptus should support booting multiboot image https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/611144 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to eucalyptus in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
