[Bug 610742] [NEW] qemu shows qemu: Unsupported syscall: 335 for pselect in Maverick

2010-07-28 Thread Ricardo Salveti
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: qemu-kvm

At lucid the pselect patch was added to qemu, in a way to remove the
annoying qemu: Unsupported syscall: 335 messages that you get when
running apt-get with qemu arm user emulation, but now this message is
back in Maverick.

Original bug for lucid is bug 520480.

[Bug 374567] Re: tomcat6 with spring throws org/springframework/core/NestedExceptionUtils

2010-07-28 Thread Thierry Carrez
Yes, to match upstream behavior we disabled security by default in Lucid
(10.04), which basically avoids the problem altogether. I still think we
should strive for a better security configuration shipped in the package
though (for those trying to enable it), so I will test and add your
suggested snippet. Thanks !

[Bug 585964] Re: VMs won't start after purging apparmor

2010-07-28 Thread kuschky
Hello, after last Ubuntu update I can't start my KVM machines. So I did
a clean basic installation and install only libvirt-bin and kvm.

uname -a : Linux server1 2.6.32-23-server #37-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jun 11
09:11:11 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux

But the error was still there.

I followed the hints in this thread and did the following:

- in qemu.conf I set security_driver = none

- I did purge appamor apt-get purge apparmor

- In qemu.conf I set vnc_tls = 0

- reboot the system

But also with this modifications I still got the same error:

error: Failed to start domain testsystem.mynet.de
error: monitor socket did not show up.: Connection refused

syslog show the following

Jul 28 08:09:13 eq4 libvirtd: 08:09:13.456: error : qemuMonitorOpenUnix:268 :
monitor socket did not show up.: Connection refused
Jul 28 08:09:13 eq4 libvirtd: 08:09:13.456: error : qemuConnectMonitor:822 :
Failed to connect monitor for testsystem.mynet.de#012

Is there any other solution to get kvm running than to use another
distribution?

Regards Michael

[Bug 609092] Re: libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off

2010-07-28 Thread Thierry Carrez
Could you precise what you mean by installed by default ?
It certainly isn't installed on Ubuntu Desktop by default, and it's not
installed in the default Server install either. It's installed in the Samba
File Server task in the server installer. It also gets installed when you
enable file sharing on the desktop. In both cases that sounds like a sane
default behavior.

The reason why it syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off
is that libpam-smbpass is an alternative way of syncing Unix and Samba
passwords: instead of syncing them at passwd change (which is what unix
password sync does), libpam-smbpass (if present) syncs them when the
user logs in. The way to disable it is to uninstall libpam-smbpass.

[Bug 610768] [NEW] does not install into given block devices

2010-07-28 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Public bug reported:

Hi,

I'm trying (and still doing some tests) to install a KVM host into a
given lvm partition. When trying this, ubuntu-vm-builder completely
ignored the block device (given with --raw) and created a qcow2.

I am currently repeating tests, and although an existing block device as
a hard disk is given, ubuntu-vm-builder still creates a directory in
/tmp to run debootstrap on.

This indicates a broken abstraction and object-orientation of the Disk
model used in the vm builder. Please fix.

A better concept would be to have an abstract base class of a Disk and
then different inheritances for several disk types, which behave
differently, e.g. for a given raw device use kpartx to create partitions
and install directly into the partitions, while using a tmp file and
qemu-img to pack a qcow2 image.

But the current structure of vm-builder is poor in behalf of it's disk
treatment. Definitely needs improvement urgently.

[Bug 609092] Re: libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off

2010-07-28 Thread Anders Aagaard
Yes, it's installed when you install samba, I should have specified I
meant by default when installing samba, sorry about that.

I've looked around for a good while now trying to find out what hashes and
encryption samba uses on it's files. I assumed it would have to use whatever
hash the protocol uses, and it looks like I guessed right. Looking around for
specifications on whats stored in the password database I find this in samba's
documentation:
user account information such as username, LM/NT password hashes, password
change times, and account flags

So that's LanMan and MD4 hash'es. LanMan is known for being easy to
crack (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LM_hash ).

My /etc/secrets are hashed to sha512 because it's too easy to break md5.
I REALLY don't want my password automatically put in more databases by
default in any package.

Looking into this more, without client lanman auth = yes samba will
use ntlm by default. That's still not a hash comparable to sha512. So my
argument stands.

[Bug 609092] Re: libpam-smbpass syncs unix passwords when unix password sync is off

2010-07-28 Thread Thierry Carrez
libpam-smbpass is not installed by default when you install samba. It
is installed when you choose the Samba file server task in tasksel
(which groups samba with other useful packages, when you don't know what
to pick), or when you setup folder sharing in the desktop (where it
makes sense as a default behavior). Both cases are targeted to novice
users where enabling libpam-smbpass makes sense as the default.

I think that's a sane usability/discoverability/security trade-off. It's
not installed when you install samba by itself, so it doesn't weaken
security at all in most cases. You can safely remove it if you got it
through the task or the folder sharing installer and prefer added
security rather than that extra feature.

Thanks, Paolo, so then launchpad bug # 579892 is the one you want.
It looks like a fix was *just* sent upstream. Should be included

[Bug 594544] Re: get prompt about modified config file on upgrade from hardy to lucid

2010-07-28 Thread Thierry Carrez
I can't reproduce that, installing hardy dhcp3-client and upgrading to the
version in lucid.
The contents of the file shipped in hardy is longer than what you posted in
your diff, and starts with:

# Configuration file for /sbin/dhclient, which is included in Debian's
# dhcp3-client package.

So it looks like something modified it... Or maybe there is a deeper
issue when the contents in hardy actually comes from a dapper - hardy
upgrade. Would those affected boxes also have been upgraded from dapper
?

[Bug 374567] Re: tomcat6 with spring throws org/springframework/core/NestedExceptionUtils

2010-07-28 Thread Bob Kerns
Great!

It would be even better if someone (you or I or an interested bystander)
figured out just what permissions it really needs. I tried guessing, but
that didn't work. Since (as is typical of classloader issues) it doesn't
really tell you what went wrong, this probably needs either seriously
systematic trial-and-error or setting up to attach a debugger.

BTW, enabling security by default led to a bug in Apache Tiles getting
fixed, so some good came of the experiment!

(Every time I see 'Lucid' I think of the Lisp company of the same name
from the '80's and early '90's.)

[Bug 610987] [NEW] euca-describe-availability-zones verbose incorrect output

2010-07-28 Thread C de-Avillez
Public bug reported:

This may be related to bug 610259.

During my test runs on Eucalyptus V2, I start from an idling system, and
then 'euca-run-instances -n value'. The value is calculated as a
random between 1 and # of possible instances for this type / 2).

The very first euca-run-instances -- on this test -- was set to '-n 12',
for type=c1.medium. All 12 instances were accepted for start. An 'euca-
describe-availability-zones verbose' *before* the euca-run-instances
reported 40/40 as Free/Max for c1.medium.

AFTER instance run submission, 'euca-describe-availability-zones
verbose' reports 33/40 for type=c12.medium. Of course,

(40 - 12) != 33.

test log showing the sequence of events will be attached.

 Bug description:
 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.4 from lucid-proposed has a broken post-start script.

 After starting mysql, /var/log/syslog says:
init: mysql post-start process (11493) terminated with status 1

Looking at the post-start script shows two problems:

 1) ret = $?
Note the spaces before and after the '='. There should be none!
As it is now, it tries to run a command called ret instead of setting a
 variable.

 2) /usr/bin/mysqladmin --defaults-file=$HOME/debian.cnf ping
If this returns a non-zero exit status (most likely because mysql isn't
fully up yet), the post-script exits immediately!
You need a set +e or something else that keeps the post-start script from
exiting prematurely if the command returns with something != 0.

Re: [Bug 608182] Re: problems with ups (mge pulsar es 8+)

2010-07-28 Thread Arnaud Quette
2010/7/28 Wolfgang Lubowski

there are no results for mge-utalk in /var/log/messages

any (driver(s) failed) message during the boot?

if I don't start nut manually with /etc/init.d/nut start, I always get the
 following message:
 Broadcast Message from n...@l4
(somewhere) at 10:40 ...

 UPS mge...@localhost is unavailable

so, I think, nut starts not completly, or nut starts and the driver
doesn't start, or something like this

the above is indeed upsd notifying that the driver is not there!

try the following (as root):
- backup your /etc/init.d/nut
- overwrite it with the attachment
- reboot your computer and send us back /tmp/mge-utalk.log for investigation
- restore everything and reboot

cheers,
Arnaud

2010-07-28 Thread Serge Hallyn
Hi,

thanks for reporting this bug. Based on the attached logfiles it looks
like apparmor refused mysql read access to a /sys file it expected to be
able to read. However, you say suddenly the kernel seems like stuck and
hang which would sound much more serious. Can you please confirm whether
or not you are able to log into the machine?

So long as you can log into the machine, we can confirm whether there is
any other problem by temporarily disabling apparmor for mysql, by doing:

cd /etc/apparmor.d/disable
ln -s ../usr.sbin.mysqld
service apparmor restart
service mysql restart

and seeing whether mysql is now able to start.

Thanks for reporting this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. I'm a little
confused about your last comment: you first said that you were able to
reproduce roughly 50% of the time with identical conditions. But your last
comment says it *does* seem related to size of the LV? You don't show any
results which failed though. Can you elaborate?

[Bug 570944] Re: passwd : gives Authentication token manipulation error

2010-07-28 Thread Steve Langasek
This is a tricky one. Dropping use_authtok does solve the problem of
pam_unix not prompting for the password, but it also changes the
behavior in the case that you have a password strength checking module
stacked first, such as pam_cracklib. If pam_cracklib is configured, we
don't want pam_winbind to prompt for a different password after we've
gone to all the trouble of checking the strength of the first one
entered!

This problem affects other combinations of stacked modules as well
(e.g., pam_krb5+pam_unix), and needs to be solved generally. Currently
the best solution I can offer is for PAM modules to always prompt for
passwords even when they don't need them, in order to ensure correct
usage of use_authtok. Alternatively, we could fix modules that accept
use_authtok to recognize the lack of a password token as valid and
prompt for it after all, or we could introduce a new common module
option with use_authtok_if_available semantics. In any event, we
don't want to lose the current behavior that modules *must* use the
existing password if provided rather than prompting separately, and any
solution we implement needs to be done systemically; so please don't
change the winbind pam profile without us first having a larger
conversation about how to make this work.

[Bug 611137] [NEW] cc_mounts may need to translate device names for xvda or virtio

2010-07-28 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

As shown in cloud-config syntax at [1], cloud-init allows the user to a name
that will appear in the metadata service instead of a device name. For
example, the user can specify:
  - [ ephemeral0, /mnt, auto, defaults,noexec ]

If the metadata service contains something like:
 'block-device-mapping': {'ami': 'sda1',
  'ephemeral0': 'sda2',
  'root': '/dev/sda1',
  'swap': 'sda3'},

Then an entry in /etc/fstab will be added for 'sda2'.

There are 2 possibilities that the string 'sda2' will be wrong.
a.) on ec2, we're using a -virtual kernel, or some kernel without a patch to
make xen block devices show up as 'sdX' rather than 'xvdX'. Currently our -ec2
kernels have xen block devices as sdX, but this may change.
b.) on eucalyptus, with virtio as root device and/or ebs. In this case, the
metadata service will still likely have 'sdX' but the kernel devices would be
named vdX.

In either case, some trickery will have to be done to decide to rename.

Really, this is just a general problem with the metadata service
provided by the hypervisor believing it knows certain things about the
OS that is running in it.

[Bug 611142] [NEW] seabios should have native scsi support

2010-07-28 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: seabios

Currently when a grub multiboot image is booted with 'kvm -kernel' and
'biosdisk' module, it will see block devices of type IDE or virtio. It
will not see scsi devices.

To demonstrate this:
$ qemu-img create -f qcow2 disk.img 1G
$ grub-mkrescue --output=rescue.iso
$ grub-mkimage -O i386-pc --output=grub-mb.img biosdisk minicmd part_msdos

An 'ls' inside the grub prompt will show hard disks (hd0) on if:
a.) -drive uses interface of virtio or scsi
or
b.) kvm boots boot from a cdrom or floppy

For example, with these commands, grub will see a '(hd0)'
$ kvm -drive file=disk.img,if=scsi,boot=on -cdrom rescue.iso -boot d
$ kvm -drive file=disk.img,if=scsi,boot=on -floppy rescue.iso -boot a
$ kvm -drive file=disk.img,if=virtio,boot=on -cdrom rescue.iso -boot d
$ kvm -drive file=disk.img,if=ide,boot=on -cdrom rescue.iso -boot d
$ kvm -drive file=disk.img,if=virtio,boot=on -kernel grub-mb.img
$ kvm -drive file=disk.img,if=ide,boot=on -kernel grub-mb.img

But the following will not:

[Bug 611142] Re: seabios should have native scsi support

2010-07-28 Thread Scott Moser
I'm fully aware that this isn't a high priority bug for anyone primarily due to
the fact that it uses the word 'scsi'.
However, I wanted to document it here.

Also, I'm attaching an IRC log of a conversation with aligouri in #kvm
discussing the issue.

[Bug 611144] [NEW] eucalyptus should support booting multiboot image

2010-07-28 Thread Scott Moser
Public bug reported:

Currently, for each instance launched by Eucalyptus, an admin provided kernel
is booted. Eucalyptus generates a hunk of libvirt xml like the following:
os
typehvm/type
kernelBASEPATH/kernel/kernel
cmdlineroot=/dev/sda1 console=ttyS0/cmdline
/os

The result is that kvm is invoked with '-kernel path/kernel' and
'-append root=/dev/sda1 console=ttyS0'.

Historically, the admin provided kernel has been a linux kernel. This
is in keeping with EC2's practice. Recently, amazon has exposed the
ability to boot your own kernel by providing pv-grub as a kernel.
The pv-grub boot loader functions very much like a normal grub 0.97
loader. It reads a menu.lst from /boot/grub/menu.lst and boots kernels
from inside the guest.

The largest end user benefit of this is that now the operating system
booted can manage its own kernel. Previously, a kernel upgrade in an
instance would result in the same kernel being used on reboot.

Eucalyptus should provide a way to load a boot loader, rather than
limiting the 'kernel' to a linux kernel.

===

The truth is, that Eucalyptus does not enforce that the kernel must be a
linux kernel. And, a multiboot complient kernel can actually be booted
in the mechanism described above, thanks to kvm '-kernel' being a
multiboot complient boot loader.

This sounds like a perfectly simple solution: Let the admin create
multiboot compliant boot loader image (ie, grub2) that would chainload
to the grub installed in the image.

In fact, it actually *almost* works. The problem with the simple
solution is that eucalyptus uses scsi as its root device, and seabios
has no native support for scsi (bug 611142).

Because this is *major* functionality, I'm seeking a work around to the
issue above.
