[Bug 613463] Re: [10.10 - Alpha 3 (candidate)] Prompts misleading grub dialogs during UEC Node installation.
This bug is present now because eucalyptus-nc added a dependency on grub-pc. I believe that this caused grub-pc to get installed earlier in the installation process, before some other things were properly set up. The reason for the dependency on grub-pc is that eucalyptus-nc is creating a boot floppy (no, I'm not kidding) using grub-mkrescue. That is done in mk-mb-loader [1]. grub-rescue depends on a functional grub- mkimage, and to create bootable content for a pc system, that depends on files inside grub-pc (the content of /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc/). One solution to this would be to provide the contents of /usr/lib/grub/i386-pc in a separate package , and maybe in general all of the /usr/lib/grub/format directories. Ie, if there was a package called grub-pc-modules, then eucalyptus-nc could depend on that package and on grub-common (for grub-rescue). That would have the added benefit of not explicitly requiring a bootloader in eucalyptus-nc (for a case where grub-pc wasn't the right boot loader for the host system). It seems to me that the content of /usr/lib/grub/dir is useful of simply being a host's bootloader. It may well make sense to have all of /usr/lib/grub/* installed on a system, but grub not used as the host's bootloader at all. -- [1] http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-core-dev/ubuntu/maverick/eucalyptus/devel/annotate/head%3A/tools/mk-mb-loader ** Also affects: grub (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- [10.10 - Alpha 3 (candidate)] Prompts misleading grub dialogs during UEC Node installation. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/613463 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to eucalyptus in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 613619] Re: qem/kvm misinterprets LVM volume geometry
Here are some discussions where I found problems mentioned that seem to be the same or closely related problem: http://www.howtoforge.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-30329.html http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1425421 I am not sure yet what exactly the reason is, but I experienced similar problems on several hosts, both with kvm and qemu. You can install a system on a partitioned lvm volume from the host, but once you boot it, the virtual machine can't mount it (or generates rubbish like reading files that have been deleted under FAT16). Interestingly one of the commenters in the ubuntu discussion above mentioned that it worked when leaving space at the beginning of the lvm. I once tried to convert a regular ubuntu machine into an almost identical virtual copy for backup reasons. I first used fdisk -c with -u command (which results in different positions for the partitions), and when I bootet that virtual machine, it could mount only the first two partitions, but then ran into severe trouble when trying to mount the third filesystem (beeing unable to display file permissions or contents and such things). When I repeated everything with a regular old- fashioned fdisk (without -c and -u) it worked. But that was obviously some luck, since repeating this with lvm volumes of different size was not possible. For some reason the virtual disk looks somehow different from inside (virtual machine) than from outside (host), and it might be related to the the beginning of the lvm volume. -- qem/kvm misinterprets LVM volume geometry https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/613619 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to qemu-kvm in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 613969] [NEW] Uninformative libvirt error message when a virtual disk source is unavailable
Public bug reported: On Ubuntu 10.04, I was recently unable to start two virtual machine. Both produced the same error. The error reported by virt-manager was Traceback (most recent call last): File /usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/engine.py, line 588, in run_domain vm.startup() File /usr/share/virt-manager/virtManager/domain.py, line 150, in startup self._backend.create() File /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/libvirt.py, line 300, in create if ret == -1: raise libvirtError ('virDomainCreate() failed', dom=self) libvirtError: monitor socket did not show up.: Connection refused and the error reported by virsh was error: Failed to start domain WindowsVista-IE7 error: monitor socket did not show up.: Connection refused It turned out that the reason the virtual machines would not start is that the sources for their virtual cdrom drives were unavailable. One VM had an iso file as the source, but I had deleted the iso file. The other had my physical cdrom drive as the source, but I did not have a disk in it. After disconnecting these unavailable sources the VMs started successfully. It would have been nice if virt-manager and virsh had reported that some configured disks were unavailable instead of reporting a generic message that the connection to the VM did not show up. ** Affects: libvirt (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Uninformative libvirt error message when a virtual disk source is unavailable https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/613969 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is subscribed to libvirt in ubuntu. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs

[Bug 613309] Re: upstart scripts do not wait for 'cloud-config' status
Pete, What problem were you seeing exactly? The upstart jobs cloud-* do not explicitly list 'cloud-config' as a 'start on' requirement. That is by design. cloud-init starts on: (mounted MOUNTPOINT=/ and net-device-up IFACE=eth0) That set of events actually blocks any other upstart jobs from running until it is finished. Because of this, all the other cloud-config-* jobs are guaranteed to run after cloud-init finishes. Your suggestion to modify that to 'filesystem' from 'mounted MOUNTPOINT=/' will break that. Have you actually seen this to not be true ? I do agree that the parallelization of the cloud-cfg jobs is annoying. This has been changed in maverick. Now the jobs run serially, and the order can actually be controlled by cloud-config input. For the case that you were interested in, with the debconf, the setting of debconf values will run prior to the running of 'apt-get' so that should be fine. The one thing I would consider most annoying is that user scripts (upstart/cloud-run-user-script.conf) are not guaranteed to run after any of the cloud-config jobs are run. So, you can't rely on the following cloud-config: | #cloud-config | packages: | - axel | runcmd: | - [ axel, http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/linux-2.6.35.tar.bz2 ] I find that to be annoying, and would agree to fix that. -- upstart scripts do not wait for 'cloud-config' status https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/613309 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Server Team, which is a direct subscriber. -- Ubuntu-server-bugs mailing list Ubuntu-server-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com Modify settings or unsubscribe at: https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-server-bugs
